    Default AFI's Top 100 films

This is a list of the top 100 films ever by the American Film Institute. I am going to post a list of all the films on this list that I have seen. Odds are it will be a short list. Feel free to do the same for yourself and if there is a list or movie that you think should be added, post it and I'll tell you if I've seen it. (This is actually a game that I often play with my friends because I've seen very few movies that 'everyone has seen')

    Wizard of Oz
    It's A Wonderful Life
    Star Wars
    All About Eve
    Psycho
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Dr. Strangelove
    Annie Hall
    It Happened One Night
    North by Northwest
    West Side Story
    Rear Window
    A Clockwork Orange
Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs
    The Sound of Music
    M*A*S*H
    Fantasia
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Vertigo
    Fargo

    That's 20 out of 100 or 20% so I get an F.

    Ok, your turn.
I don't think so, therefore I'm probably not.

    76, if I counted right.

But I usually win (lose?) for having never seen the film version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". By most accounts that's the most popular American film.

    75, sorry. I haven't actually seen "Giant".

Also, saying "A Clockwork Orange" is an American film is disgraceful. That's pretty much using the most tenuous connection possible to claim it. I can't imagine anyone honestly thinks it's the least bit American. I'm not even sure '2001' qualifies, but I wouldn't object quite as much there.

I counted movies only when I was reasonably sure that I had seen them completely. There are several cases where I have definitely seen substantial parts, but as far as I can remember never the whole thing.

I'm usually the "loser" in these kinds of threads.

    The Wizard of Oz
    On the Waterfront
    It's a Wonderful Life
The Bridge on the River Kwai
    Star Wars
    E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
    Dr. Strangelove
    West Side Story
    The Sound of Music
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Silence of the Lambs
    The Manchurian Candidate
    Forrest Gump

    13. There were a couple that I've only seen parts of, so I'm not counting them. And you may note that many of these are arguable. (I'm movie ignorant for the most part, but Star Wars is one of the greatest of all time? Really?)

    Patton (1970)
    My Fair Lady (1964)
    Bringing Up Baby (1938)

26 out of 100. Damn, Sticks beat me. Does it count if some of the films I was dragged to and hated?

Taumpy, one thing to remember, AIUI this list weighs things like influence of the work, as well as its merit in its own right. For example, that's one reason that Birth of a Nation is so routinely on such lists.

This is probably not good but I have seen 91 of the films.

This is the list I have not seen:
    38. Double Indemnity (1944)
    39. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
    44. The Birth of a Nation (1915)
    57. The Third Man (1949)
    63. Stagecoach (1939)
    73. Wuthering Heights (1939)
    74. The Gold Rush (1925)
    76. City Lights (1931)
    82. Giant (1956)

I have watched parts of Wuthering Heights but got bored.

I never heard of Giant and looking at the cast I have added it to Netflix.
Someday I will try Doctor Zhivago.
I added The Third Man and Double Indemnity to my Queue too.

I only saw Sunset Blvd recently.

I have seen 58 of these, will list later.

Largely because at some point I made myself watch movies I thought I should have seen. I can't say I enjoyed all of them.

The Third Man is a tough watch. Damn Orwell.

I'm only counting the ones that I remember watching all the way through. Movies I caught glimpses of or saw when I was too little to clearly remember don't count.

    The Wizard of Oz (1939)
    It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
    Star Wars (1977)
    Psycho (1960)
    E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
    A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
    Amadeus (1984)
    The Sound of Music (1965)
    Forrest Gump (1994)
    Dances With Wolves (1990)
    My Fair Lady (1964)
    Pulp Fiction (1994)

    So...thirteen.

There is a lot on that list I would see at least once a month, a couple I have seen only once and that was once too often.

This is the list of films I've not seen:

    9. Schindler's List (1993)
    12. Sunset Blvd. (1950)
    16. All About Eve (1950)
    24. Raging Bull (1980)
    31. Annie Hall (1977)
    35. It Happened One Night (1934)
    36. Midnight Cowboy (1969)
    37. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
    44. The Birth of a Nation (1915)
    53. Amadeus (1984)
    65. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
    67. The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
    74. The Gold Rush (1925)
    76. City Lights (1931)
    81. Modern Times (1936)
    86. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
    90. The Jazz Singer (1927)
    92. A Place in the Sun (1951)

Only a couple in there that I really want to see.

    35. It Happened One Night (1934)
    36. Midnight Cowboy (1969)
    37. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
    44. The Birth of a Nation (1915)
    53. Amadeus (1984)
    65. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
    67. The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
    74. The Gold Rush (1925)
    76. City Lights (1931)
    81. Modern Times (1936)
    86. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
    90. The Jazz Singer (1927)
    92. A Place in the Sun (1951)

Only a couple in there that I really want to see.
There are a few really good ones there.
    8. On the Waterfront (1954) If you like Brando at all I really recommend this. I would say his second best character after Don Vito Corleone.

    9. Schindler's List (1993) This is a really well made and deeply moving movie with some really great performances. It is not one I would want to watch more than once but it is well worth the once.

    24. Raging Bull (1980) DeNiro & Scorsese at near their best. It is a little slow but a powerful film.

    53. Amadeus (1984) Just a fun and somewhat silly movie. But a good watch. I am not sure why it is top 100 but it was quite good.

    65. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Hopefully it is not too late, but watching this movie for the first time it really worked and Hopkins and Foster were both incredible. This movie changed Hopkin's career in a way where I suspect watching it now for the first time it won't have quite the same edge and effect.

Movies from the list that I know I have seen from beginning to end, unedited, when I was old enough to remember (which is my usual criteria for having actually "seen" a movie):

    Casablanca
    The Godfather
    Gone with the Wind
    Lawrence of Arabia
    The Wizard of Oz
    The Graduate
    Singin in the Rain
The Bridge on the River Kwai
    Star Wars
    Psycho
    Chinatown
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    ET
    Dr. Strangelove
    Apocalypse Now
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
    Annie Hall
    The Godfather Part II
    Doctor Zhivago
    North by Northwest
    West Side Story
    A Streetcar Named Desire
    Taxi Driver
    Jaws
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    Amadeus
    The Sound of Music
    MASH
    Fantasia
    Rebel Without a Cause
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Tootsie
    Close Encounters
    The French Connection
    Forrest Gump
    Dances With Wolves
    American Graffiti
    The Deer Hunter
    Modern Times
    Giant
    Duck Soup
    Goodfellas
    Pulp Fiction
    Bringing up Baby
    Unforgiven

By my count that's 46. There are a couple that I saw substantial parts of when I was younger (in particular Frankenstein and King Kong) but I'm not sure I ever saw the whole things end to end.

The most significant ommisions for someone my age are probably It's a Wonderful Life, Rocky, Platoon, Fargo, and Silence of the Lambs.

Jim, Dr. Zhivago is quite good, there are some really memorable scenes and images in there, and the music is used very effectively as well. I read the book ages ago and it's pretty good too, it gives you way more backstory on several of the characters.
