How do animals with very sensitive hearing not become overwhelmed by noises, such as thunderstorms, traffic etc.?

I've observed that most animals are pretty 'skittish' (i.e. frightened or startled by loud noises) and will either bolt or try to hide when confronted with overwhelming noise(s).

Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one. A moment. In childhood. When it first occurred to you that you don't go on forever. Must have been shattering. Stamped into one's memory. And yet, I can't remember it.
