    Default Making an adventure game

Every since I was a kid and in love with "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, I've wanted to write a story that branched off based on the reader's decisions. Text based adventure games were some of my favorite computer games growing up, because it was a very similar idea.

So...I'm going to make a visual novel/adventure game. After checking out the visual novel engine Ren'Py, I'm fairly confident I can handle the coding involved. Marsilia and I can probably do the visuals (though some extra help there would be great).

Ah, but the writing! We're looking at a rambling story that would branch off into several possible directions and having a couple more people involved in writing those branching storylines would be wonderful. Even if folks aren't comfortable doing the actual writing, a few more heads to help develop different directions for the story to go would be helpful.

Right now, I'm in a toss up between a science-fiction setting or fantasy, possibly some blending of the two with a central quest and maybe a little romance somewhere along the way. When it's done, I'll make it available for free for anyone who wants to give it a try.

So anybody interested in helping brainstorm?

I'm willing to help but making no commitment to write as life has a funny habit to get in the way.

Just having another mind to expand on things is help enough. I understand life getting in the way of writing!

Sure, I'll help out, if I can. I'd vote for a not-at-all-Trek-like sf story.

Yes, I'd like to do something with a different feeling from the games we have that are currently active.

I am overly preoccupied with other things, but I'd love to hear more about this as you develop it. It's a cool idea!

Thanks, Orual! A bunch of friends of mine that I've gamed with over the years are going to be helping as well (including, luckily, one who has more programming experience than I do), so I think it should be fun.

Hey, I still have that partial world and history loaded up from last year if you wanted to do a fantasy but light on magic story with choices. It provides a framework.

You're welcome to use as little or as much as you want. I think it was Tolkien himself that said it helps to start with a map.

I'm totally in. These things have a funny way of morphing once they're started, but I am very intrigued.

    Me. Me.

... yeah, I suppose I could find the time.

I may have little time, but I have plenty of imagination going spare.

Likewise. The CYOA, along with the Which Way books (which were actually the best-written and my favorites) and the few TSR-published, Dungeons and Dragons-oriented titles from the 80s, completely fired my imagination back in the day.

I much preferred the Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf books that came out instead of CYOA.
