I doubt you [leander] have really counted the total, and I think this [hundreds of posters] is an exaggeration. I haven't counted either, but my view is that the rules have disaffected about 50-75 posters at most, led by a particularly vocal dozen or couple of dozen. The active membership runs to at least a couple of thousand, so everyone else either supports the new rules or doesn't care much either way.

Of course, our board software HAS kept count. As of this post, it's 832. That's nearly half the "active membership" — assuming the guess about that is a whole lot better than the guess about our number of posters.

I can appreciate where you're coming from, yojimbo. But in fairness, I doubt you can link to a board that is lacking schoolyard behavior at its finest. Certainly, the SDMB is full of it in spades. As a ten year veteran, I know that for a fact.

So, it really doesn't make sense that observing schoolyard behavior would be a deal breaker for you. Like I told you in my (unopened) PM to you, I'm really glad to see that you're here. But if you begrudge people from defending themselves and their friends from random attacks by out-of-reach bullies, then somewhere along the way I missed something about your thought processes.

It seems to me that the biggest show of schoolyard behavior was Stink posting a blistering indictment of me at a board where he knew I was no longer posting. He even expressly said that he was doing it in order to trap me like a spy from the Pharisees demanding to see a coin. "What a conundrum!" was his reasoning. "I'll post there so that Lib will either not defend himself and therefore be piled on, or else will defend himself and break his word."

It was a plan so stupid in its conception that even the SDMB staff shut it down.

I definitely hope you hang around. But I think you've taking the wrong tack in this instance. Yeah, we're circling the wagons and responding to Stink's attack. But it's important that we do that for two reasons: (1) we're a young board, and need some solidarity and cohesion just to survive, and (2) he really asked for it.

Nevertheless, if this event honestly pushes your button, while thousands of similar events elsewhere have not, then maybe it's just as well. All the best, whatever you do.

Nope. not looking for anything. I've no problem with side boards. I myself completly paid for(a year) and owned NADS(a smaller board mainly aimed at Euro dopers) for a while before I handed it over to someone else.

My problem is that this place seems to be more about what it's against than what it's for. There's a thread here about mutiny on the dope FFS. It seems to me a lot of people here are just using the place as an ego trip and nothing more.

The dope has taken years to get to the sorry state it's in and in those years I've enjoyed it a lot so I tend to cut it a bit more slack than I do new places. This place is about a week away from that kind of bollocks IMO. Talking about banning already? HA! I'm not seeing it really happen on Giraffe's place yet but we'll see.

I came in had a look around and quickly found people who I don't like on the dope being cunts here as well. Except here they seem empowered.

I only have so much energy I can give to boards and this one seems like it may be too much work for me. I'm barely hanging in on the Dope and that's a place i love and have a lot of history with.

That's fair. I dipped into the PIT area as that was my favourite read on the dope.

I didn't like the level of BS I saw on such a young board and it put me off. Wagons are circling already and decenting voices are attacked. Nothing personel at all really to any poster but it's just a bit too much work. The economy is horrible, friends and collegues all around me are getting let go, people are being shot in Northern Ireland again and my favourite board and biggest timewaster is being destroyed by a fuckwit of a Admin. But I'm afraid you've missed some things at Giraffe's board. Not to start a war, but just to clear up the record. They have indeed joked about banning people. They have opened threads to bitch about the SDMB admins here, here, and here. Maybe fewer threads and posts than ours, but theirs is a smaller board and less active.

But if nothing else, it's good that our board opened your eyes to things you can't see elsewhere. Appreciate the PM response. See you around.

Show me where I said I was posting on the SDMB to "trap" you. I didn't say it because it wasn't my intent. As far as you not posting there, that's 50/50. Actually, that's not why it was locked. And if you go back and look at the thread, you'll notice that Ed didn't lock it, Gfactor did. I didn't understand why, which is why I asked. I didn't put any links in the OP to this board, but I guess there was some concern that a "board war" would ensue. It never occurred to me. I thought the majority of the posters from the Dope and Domebo were adults. But there appears to be a higher level of sensitivity these days. No problem.

I had a good exchange with the moderators about that post, and it was suggested that I start another pit thread if I wanted. I decided not to and instead posted it here. As for cliquishness on this board, same deal as with the Dope - it's a public message board, open to anyone. Join in the discussions and don't act cliquish if you don't want to see cliquishness. We all contribute to the tone of any board we participate on.

2) I can go back, but what would be the point? The same things will keep driving me away, and I have more productive things to do with my time.

As for the other...well, the guy has been trolling Q.E.D. shamelessly at the Dope, he originally posted the OP for this thread at the Dope, and only came here after that thread was locked for attempting to incite a board war. His contributions here have mostly been limited to this thread, where he's made a royal ass of himself. That shit just doesn't fly with me. If he wants to be a member here, fine...but he needs to bring something to the table besides shit-stirring, and that's all he's offered so far. Pit-style rants don't carry much weight unless the ranter has some established history of positive contributions to let people know he's more than just another pissed off fuckwit.

I'd suggest most "new" and/or relatively unknown posters stay out of the pit, or at least try to avoid direct conflict with people at first. Show us some merit...contribute to regular threads on topics of interest, let us get to know you and respect you for awhile.

That's not what I said. You seemed to be judging the entire board based on what you've seen in this forum. I'm saying that this forum is not the draw here, it's not the focus of this board. It exists, but so does plenty of other stuff. Frankly, if we've got nothing to offer but a pit-clone, this board will die within 6 months. What we need to do is develop our own board culture.

I don't think it's something that can be rushed. It's got to burn itself out naturally, but it will happen. The shitstorm is slowing losing steam even over at the Dope, as people come to accept what has happened. I'll admit I've been something of lightning rod over there, but I'm just about talked out. The Schism has happened, and things aren't going back to the way they were earlier. There will still probably be flareups as somebody pours gasoline on the embers of a dormant fire. I'll try not to be the guy that does that. So much.

I'd suggest most "new" and/or relatively unknown posters stay out of the pit, or at least try to avoid direct conflict with people at first. Show us some merit...contribute to regular threads on topics of interest, let us get to know you and respect you for awhile.

I couldn't disagree with this more. Are you trying to take all the fun out of life?? Look at what a joy this thread has been! Besides, contributions to the Thunderdome are worth as much as contributions in other fora.
(And I know I'm unknown, but I certainly don't consider myself new. I'm a lurker of long standing. So I'm not trying to defend my own rights to the TD with this post.)

The part I love about situations such as these, is when the OP is put in the interesting position of defending so angrily how much this whole thing is not a big deal. The more you compound it, the more pathetic you sound, trying to pull shreds of evidence about why everybody around you sucks so much. I mean, there's only so many times you can call a community you are a part of a group of pathetic losers with no outside interests before people start to wonder why you seem to have nothing better to do.
