Way to go, choie! But it was Ilsa, not Isla, Lund in Casablanca. Ah, Ingrid... le sigh.

Oops, just a moment of dyslexia. I certainly know Ilsa! And yay for Isaac Newton!

CIAS, the song is , the late Hawaiian singer. (I would have accepted any mutilated spelling attempt, or even just "Israel something.") For a while there you couldn't watch a film trailer, heart-tugging commercial, or TV montage (e.g. E.R. and the death of Mark Greene) without eventually hearing that familiar ukulele strum.

    Okay, lemme think. All right...

    The letter is D

Here's a nice commercial use of that song:

    D it is.

Oh dear, I probably should know #2, as it sounds like a Trek reference. But the only answer I have is for #3: Mr. Darling, from the Peter Pan musical, who usually doubles as Captain Hook.

    2 DQs for you.

No clue on #1 (someone with a puppet?! Is this a Splitting Images reference?)

#2: Hmm, could be Delia... I don't know her last name. Actually I only know that she has a line of ready-made food, she might be a fake icon like Aunt Jemima for all I know. Well, I can't think of any other UK chefs besides Ramsay, Lawson, Oliver and Ainsley whatsisname, so I'll just give it a try. No, I'm not Delia ___?

#3: No, I am not Daryl Hannah? I know she was in Bladerunner, and wasn't she an astronomer in Roxanne?

    At least one DQ.

Oh blimey, I'll never be able to answer any science fiction novel questions! But that still sounds like a DS9 episode. Wasn't the Defiant always at risk for getting stolen one way or another?

OMG, a snooker player? Now I wish I were Canadian so I could ask you about curling champions. All I know about snooker is the series of sketches from the That Mitchell and Webb Sound / Look radio and TV series.

Agreed. Of course, hypothetically, if I were answering DQ #2 and were defining some fantasy creature or science fiction character with either no or a fictional third gender (say, one of those neuter characters on the ST:TNG episode), neither an affirmative "female" nor "male" would be accurate. But admittedly that ain't the case here. Also some of the DQs can't be given affirmatively--such as the first new one you asked!

    DQs:

    1. Fictional
    2. Female
    3. Last name beings with 'D'

Droopy, as in the cartoon dog, CIAS? Your cartoon lore is definitely better than mine. I'm pretty bad with anything outside Disney and Warner Brothers. (Droopy seems like Hanna Barbara, is that right?)

Don't forget you get a DQ!

Stumped on 1 and 2, though I have a feeling I'll be annoyed at myself with that first question. #3, No I am not Daisy Duke? (It's either that or the famous Dennis Bermuda. )

    1. Er... No, I am Vic Damone? (Total WAG)
    2. HEE! No, I am not Deirdre, wife of poor Arthur Putey (sp. varies). OMG, great question!!
    3. I know I'm going to guess wrong--I'm torn between two actors, but I can only think of two out of the three roles for each of them. No, I am not... Denholm Elliott? (My secondary choice is David Niven, FWIW.)

    1. Okaaaay, this could be a ST:TNG-era reference, but I can't think of any anthropomorphic creature, much less one that actually had a name or initials. (Oy, if this is Trek I'm gonna be really irked.) Hmm. Wasn't there a film, Buck Rogers and the 24 1/2 Century? No... wait!!! Wasn't it Duck Dodgers and the 24 1/2 Century?? That's gotta be it, you cartoon-lovin' guy. So no, I am not Daffy Duck! HA.

For your second DQ, CIAS, would you care to clarify that typo of "twn," which could be "two" or "ten"? (Edited to add: I suppose it could be a really bad typo of "twenty" or an even worse typo of "twelve.") Not that it necessarily matters, but...

Dinah Shore! That's a blast from the past. And I should've at least guessed it was a woman--I remember the tune and that sort of jingle would've been more likely sung by a female singer.

Also I cannot believe I got the Denholm Elliott question right. I remembered the Raiders and Trading Places roles (although I thought he was a butler in the latter, so even then I thought I was pushing it), but never saw The Cruel Sea. Truth is I thought he only started in films later in life. OTOH I couldn't picture David Niven playing a valet unless very late in life in some kind of comedy (he was too dashing in his youth), and I knew I was mixing him up with Ronald Coleman for the school role in Goodbye, Mr. Chips, so that was a wrong 'un altogether!

    1. Shoot, I suspect this is a Forrest Gump reference, and I've never seen it.

    2. It doesn't make sense but I'll guess No, I'm not James Doohan? (Because why would Scotty have said "Beam me up, Scotty" to himself?) Actually, the first joking thought I had was "Yes, I did It" by O.J. Simpson--even less sensical considering there's no "D" in his name, but there you are.

    3. Might be stretching it since it's a nickname, but no, I'm not Richard "Dick" Nixon, when he was Eisenhower's VP? (I know that when asked to name some important policies/ideas Nixon had as Vice President, Eisenhower quipped something like, "Give me a week and I might think of one." 1. Oh I know this one! No, I am not Doris Kearns Goodwin

    2. I was totally gonna say Dumbledore until I read the author was male. No clue on this character but I think I'll be annoyed when I know. (Okay, added after writing the below answer: Mr. Dorrit, Little Dorrit's dad? Sorry for the spoiler...)

Correct on all mine. The Goodwin book was Team of Rivals, a tiny little piece of which became the core of Lincoln; and yes, Little Dorrit was the fictional kid who snuffed it.

Booyah! Well actually in Little Dorrit it's
    Spoiler (mouseover to read):
Little Dorrit's father and her uncle who die--her dad dies because he can't survive outside prison after living in the Marshalsea for half his life (and all of his daughter's--she was born there), and his kind brother dies pretty much out of grief as a result. Little Dorrit herself has a happy ending.

Without the plagiarism, presumably. (No, actually, I don't think that's the book she was accused of, uh, improperly sourcing.)

Well, I'm not David Lee Roth, but...

Yes, I am Cruella de Vil! Well done, sir.

Re: the contentious answers--there's a strong implication (not in the cartoon but the book) that Cruella is an actual demon; when bitten by one of the pups, she actually tastes like pepper, and of course the crazy heat she can tolerate is inhuman. So I'm not convinced she's really British, or alive or dead. As far as the sci-fi, the rather unknown sequel to the novel, The Starlight Barking, is a completely bizarre genre-change from the semi-realistic original (well, except for the whole "dogs talking to each other and being able to make plans and rescue their puppies" element in The One Hundred and One Dalmatians). Cruella is given some weird brain hypnotic suggestion where she hates fur and starts to love all animals, all humans are sent to sleep by a canine from outer space ("Sirius," the literal dog star--I kid you not), and all the dogs apparently have their own Parliament and Prime Minister equivalents; Sirius gives them the opportunity to be sent into space for a new life where humans won't subjugate them. Meanwhile, Cruella loses her hypnotic suggestion by... some method I don't remember... and she turns evil again, finally sent back to prison for the rest of her life. Dogs save the day and decide to stay at home.

So, yeah. I choose to ignore that book. The One Hundred and One Dalmatians was one of my favorite books as a kid. Probably because I had a pet Dalmatian and I loved that there was a book all about them.

Anyhoo, congrats to CIAS, who apparently has Kylah's empathic ability to read my mind and get all my bleedin' answers correctly!

Ooh I actually know the First Among Equals answer! I went through a Jeffrey Archer phase in my college years.

    1. Did your marriage to two brothers have permanent repercussions for the history of world religion?

    2. Were you a ruthless bastard in business but a prominent philanthropist whose name is borne upon numerous charitable entities, but perhaps most famously a Victorian-era music hall?

    3. One of the most suave, debonair and successful actors in history, did you have a Dickensian childhood that included your father institutionalizing your mother when you were a little boy, and claiming that she died--only telling you the truth when you were in your thirties?

Were you Admiral Lord Nelson's #2 guy at Trafalgar? - Adm. Cuthbert Collingwood.

Well done, CIAS! Last two are correct. The woman whose marriages to a pair of brothers caused the major religious repercussions was Catherine of Aragon, Prince Arthur's widow and the first wife of his younger brother Henry VIII. Despite the fact that Henry had needed a Papal dispensation to get married to his brother's widow in the first place, he later demanded that the Pope annul the marriage so he could marry Anne Boleyn. And we all know what happened as a result of that.

    IQs:

    1. Were you the pope who denied the above annulment?

    2. As an old man, when you (and your wife and several of your neighbors) were accused of witchery, did your last words consist of a repeated two-word phrase that has to be one of the most badass responses to torture ever?

    3. Do your roles include a foul-mouthed, vicious, Machiavellian bastard as well as a beloved children's show character?

    DQ:

Living (if real) or would be alive today (if fictional)?

I guess you have never seen "My name is Bruce" directed by Bruce Campbell, starring Bruce Campbell as a fictional Bruce Campbell so....

Yep, they were married for about a year or so before Arthur died. How strange things would be if Arthur had lived. No schism w/Rome (at least I don't know if anyone else would've been ballsy enough to cut the Pope off at the knees as Henry did), no Bloody Mary, no Elizabethan age... It's barely possible the Stewarts would still have reigned (depending on what issue resulted from King Arthur(!) and Catherine), but I suppose their branch might've started earlier with Mary Q. of S. rather than waiting until James. Also depends on if Henry (who would've been... what, Duke of Cornwall?) were alive to take over when Arthur died.

Anyway, it's interesting to contemplate just how tremendously Arthur's death affected history.

#1 is sooo close that I have to give it to you. Pope Clement.
#2 is Giles Corey, and I'm so impressed that you knew this that I'll give that to you too. (I would probably be a very bad teacher.)
#3 is the one I'm shocked you didn't know. Peter Capaldi, aka Malcolm "Don't you ever call me a bully! I'm so much worse than that" Tucker, and now the 13th Doctor. Although I understand focusing on Ian Richardson's House of Cards role might've thrown you.

(You may have to bonk yourself over the head when EH tells you the proper answer to that 'young director' question.)

Hmm, we might not have such differing views on DW. I've only seen maybe two DW episodes since the reboot, and my favorite doctors are 5, 3 and 2--all old-school. But I still think of the show as a children's show even if during the Eccleston/Tennant/Smith years there was apparently a lot of romantic stuff. Is that what you meant about Eastenders? Personally I do like continuity and arcs--one of my favorite through-lines was the Turlough stuff back during Davison's reign, and I greatly enjoyed everything to do with Pertwee being stuck on earth working with UNIT.

(Did you see the trailer for the Capaldi season yet? He looks awesome. Back to the Doctor being mysterious and dangerous--should be good for fans of Tom Baker, but without the stupid manic clowning humor I so disliked in the Baker years. And I know I'm vastly in the minority there!)

Right, of course, on Catherine Zeta Jones. #2 was Charlotte Corday, who assassinated Jean-Paul Marat while he was in the bath. #3 was Cain, who offered God a gift of his produce while Abel gave him some livestock; God snubbed Cain's gift (for some reason) while totally favoring Abel, and you know the rest.

    IQs:

    1. Did your training as a doctor help bring vérité when you had to play a surgeon attempting to remove a man's brain with a mallet?

    2. Did you somewhat famously disagree with the idea that when one becomes an adult, one must put away childish things--and as a result, your book series ends with one of your lead characters suffering a rather cruel fate just because she wanted to grow up and her siblings didn't?

    3. Since I already mentioned one badass torture victim, here's another: despite having done what was asked of you and recanted your beliefs, did your monarch have you burned at the stake anyway--but before you died, you cried out that you were first thrusting into the flames the "unworthy hand" that had signed the false confession?

    DQs:

    - Primarily a musician?
    - Born after 1980?

Did you fall in love with Truly Scrumptious? - Yes, Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Did you star in Children of Men? - Clive Owen (and a pretty good, if bleak, movie).
Are you a noted contemporary author of naval history? - C.S. Forester isn't a present-tense "contemporary author." I was thinking of Craig Symonds, formerly of the U.S. Naval Academy faculty.

Indeed it is Cranmer, CIAS! You're up on your martyrs, I see. He's a fascinating figure.

    #1 is Graham Chapman

#2 is C.S. Lewis, who said, "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." The unfortunate character is Susan Pevensie, who, in The Last Battle,
    Spoiler (mouseover to read):
...is not among all the humans allowed into the 'heaven' that is new Narnia, and we learn that all her siblings and parents are there because they were killed in a train crash. The reason Susan's not there is, apparently, that as a teenager she's committed the heresy of liking make-up and boys and trying to forget her time in Narnia during her childhood. So author Lewis lets her survive the crash that killed her entire family and presumably leaves her to mourn alone for years.
Ugh. That book is my equivalent to the way many think of the second Star Wars trilogy--I prefer to believe it doesn't exist.

    IQs:

    1. Are you a doctor of education who's one of the most popular comedians of all time?

    2. Are you the character the abovementioned comedian played for 10 years?

    3. Were you one of the first sex symbols of the film era, to the degree that your nickname is still used to indicate someone having an indefinable but very obvious star quality?

    DQ:

    - Actress?

    Will save my 2nd DQ.

Did a pal pretend to be "from Brazil, where the nuts come from"? - One of two lovestruck fellows in the farce Charley's Aunt.
Did you serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and once run for President? - Charles Evans Hughes (he lost to Woodrow Wilson in 1916).
Did you record "letters" for your sister back in Boston? - Cooke's letters weren't for his sister, and she wasn't in Boston. This was Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester from M*A*S*H.

Does your DQ answer #12 mean you don't know for sure?

    DQs:

    Has appeared in movies?
Best known for rock and roll?

    One DQ reserved.

    IQs:

Did you travel a lot but were murdered on a beach in Hawaii?

Stumped on all three - although I get the feeling that the comic and character are going to be ones I know.
