Default I hear a noise outside that sounds like a coyote howling.

But I can't see anything. What could it be?

Are you in your haunted house?

Also it's probably a neighbor dog.

I'm not hitting the sauce again, so it's not me.

Yes, I'm in my haunted house, but it's definitely coming from outside. I'm guessing dog, too, but I've never heard a domestic dog sound like this, it's really spooky.

I've heard some surprisingly eerie noises come out of random dogs.

That would be the looters calling to each other

    Maybe it was a coyote?

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm afraid of. We do get them in the city from time to time, and I do live pretty close to a large forest preserve. I was driving near it one day, and saw a large coyote trotting along the side of the road. Would they howl in the daytime, though?

These calls are most often heard at dusk or night, but may sometimes be heard in the day or in the middle of the day.
Wiki says they do, so it must be true.

Apart from the spooky factor, is it a problem?

I'm not sure if it is, for me personally. In some suburbs around here, coyotes have made off with small dogs and such. I don't have any pets right now, so that's not an issue, but is it safe when you have small children? Not sure.

Coyotes don't cause nearly as many injuries as domestic dogs. But wikipedia says that suburban coyotes might be more dangerous because people feed them and they lose their fear of humans.

We get the same problems with foxes in our areas. The suburban ones are becoming bolder by the year.
