Default What Scares The Ever-Living Crap Out Of You?

For me it's flying. Put me on a plane and as soon as the wheels are off the ground, I turn into a panic stricken quivering wreck. I'm afraid of heights in general but I can normally handle myself on the rooftop of a tall building or on a mountain. Zipping through the air at 35,000 feet going 600 mph just turns the fear knob in my brain up to 11.

So what turns you into a useless heap of fear?

Give me whiskey when I'm thirsty,Give me a cold beer when I'm dry, Give me root beer when I'm sickly, Give me a headstone when I die.

Climbing ladders more than, say, 20 feet up.

The ocean. An inconceivably massive crush of endless water filled with horrific creatures that our ancestors would have beaten to death on sight if they had ever crawled to land. Drain all the oceans, kill everything you find there.
everything in nature is sort of gross when you look at it too closely. what is an apple? basically the uterus of a tree - terrifel

I actually am more creeped out by lakes. Something about deep still water. Having been bitten (by God-knows what) swimming across lake Namakagan in Canada probably contributes to my fear.

Horses. I am terrified of horses. Not like I piss myself at the horse track, but up close where they can bite and stomp on me makes me super run away powered.

I also do not like Gene Rayburn.

Public speaking. (Not acting, though. Figure that one out)

At work when I'm using the baler I get this horrible stab of fear that I will end up inside (for some reason?) and face horrible death by being squished. We used to have a compactor instead, and that was away from the building, connected by a little narrow hallway, and that was a lot worse. I might be a little claustrophobic.

I dislike heights as well, but I can cope as long as I don't look down. Being surprised. There's nothing that scares me more than thinking something's going to pop out at me. I hate movies that have an evil villain jump out at you.
I don't think so, therefore I'm probably not.

I used to work a job that had a baler for cardboard boxes, it didn't really help that the warning icons graphically depicted a hand being torn apart.

Amazingly I can't find any pictures of it on Google.

    Spiders and hypodermic needles.
The other night I was hanging out at Artifex and OneCentStamp's house, and Artifex pulled out some needles she uses in nursing school.
My palms started to sweat just having them near me.

Heights. Somehow, I don't mind flying, but put me on the edge of the Grand Canyon or up inside the St. Louis Arch, and I turn into a quivering mass of panic.

Also, spiders. Spiders give me issues.

And, I've got issues with storms, but that one's totally rational.

    Heights.

Crowds. (Hell, we could just leave that as people in general. Me and Gossamer, we're like soul brothers, or something.)

Claustrophobia, especially when related to any kind of breathing mask. Which makes me and my CPAP an exercise in endurance. Hell, I'm drugging myself to use it, and it's still a battle.

Spiders. Although oddly, when I went to Thailand a few weeks ago and was confronted with a MASSIVE HUNTING SPIDER the size of my hand (including fingers), my brain was like: "we have no data on this." I guess it was so big it fell outside of the proper parameters for a panic reaction.

Oceans and lakes - they're full of Cthulhu and his minions, zombies, giant eels and ancient fish that should have died a long time ago. And submarines. I blame H.P. Lovecraft.

Prophecies. As in, "the worlds gonna end in blah blah." I had a sort of paranoid/psychotic episode in my teens that was triggered by an evening with talk of prophecies about the end of the world. I recovered, but I still get intensely uncomfortable hearing people talk about it.

Large boats and ferries. They'll flip over, and then I'll be dropped in the water with Cthulhu.

I too used to fear needles, until I started getting tattoos. My desire for ink overrode my desire to not be punctured and I'm all better now.

"Ah People!" Though I always think of him as Rudolph.

It is odd, I hate being stuck in a pack of people unless it is something like a ball game, then my minor panic is not there.

I hate the type of bridge that climbs high with big curves and is narrow with oncoming traffic. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge from Maryland to Annapolis is one of these. The last time I drove over it, one span was shut down and all the traffic was over a single span and in both directions and I ended up crawling over the bridge at maybe 25-30 mph. I also could not be at the edge. I know dozens of people had to be really angry at me.

I actually agree. For some reason, I always think of the bottom of lakes as being covered in dark, slimy muck, crawling with nasty creatures. Oh, wait; "some reason" would be the fact that every single lake I've touched the bottom of has been that way.

The idea of touching bottom in a lake is utterly horrible to me.

My big brother once told me there's an ancient fish living in every lake. They don't die, just grow bigger... and bigger... and bigger.

Maybe that's where my fear of water actually started.

    It's needles for me too.

And oppressive darkness; i'm not afraid of the dark, i'm afraid of not being able to get out of the dark the moment I want to.

Another thing that really scares me is the thought of not having someone to talk to when I need it most.

Seconded! I hadn't thought of that one. Or, I actually did, but thought four things that scare the bejeebers out of me might be a bit much for one post. But, yeah. The idea of not having somebody to talk to when I really need to talk is frightening beyond belief.

I have a similar fear. I don't fear not having someone to talk in a moment of emergency. I fear not having anyone to talk to ever. I've seen so many people complain that all they want is a cave somewhere where they could go to get away from everyone and just be alone with their thoughts. I can't think of a worse hell. I've been alone with my thoughts. I don't enjoy it. I will never enjoy large crowds but I will never prefer isolation.
I don't think so, therefore I'm probably not.
