Default Top Ten Horror Movies Of All Time

If we were going to make the ULTIMATE list of horror movies, what should be included? I'll compile all the nominations so we can vote on the top ten!

Off the top of my head, my picks are Drag Me to Hell, Evil Dead II, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This is so weird. I just watched Drag Me to Hell this last weekend and thought it was probably one of the worst movies I'd seen in a long time. Then you like it, and come to find out it's got a 92% review rate on rottentomatoes. I mean what the shit. Was I watching the same movie?

I liked The Descent too. The ending did it for me. Should also nominate up Jason or whatever the guy with the hockey mask was named. The first movie with its shitty effects was hilarious. I saw three people get beheaded at the same time.

There was only one part of the movie I didn't like, and that's the fact that I saw the ending coming about 45 minutes early and I was totally high at the time. I might watch it when I'm sober. That could change my mind.

Oh, and my all time favorite horror movie! I can't believe I didn't mention it. The Omen

I'm not a horror movie fan, but I just saw 1408 and thought it was excellent.

Is Se7en a horror movie or a gory suspense drama? I would have included it because it was disturbing, like 8mm with Nick Cage was, but I don't think they count as horror.

Hmm, good point. I suppose not, then? I'm not sure how you'd classify something as horror. Maybe I'm just going by what I found horrifying.

On that note, add IT to the list

Stick "The Wicker Man" on there. And "House Of A 1,000 Corpses".

Wicker Man, sure. House of 1000 Corpses, while visually stunning was a fucking conceptual mess with a non existant linear plot line and a whole bag of camera shots randomly dumped all over it. It shows what happens when someone who's never directed a film gets to wank all over one and make gruesome and unwatchable edits.

In "1,000 Corpses", I think I mainly liked the way it brought movies like Hills Have Eyes and Chainsaw up to date, and I thought some of the characters, especially Captain Spaulding, were great.

How about The Devil Rides Out, anyone?

This is a Christopher Lee movie, right? I had it in my Netflix queue but it became unavailable.

Hmm, it's back in there now. It should be interesting to see Lee in a horror film and not as the villain.

I think most of my picks are already listed here, so consider the repeats to be seconding them:

    The Exorcist
    Rosemary's Baby
    Pet Semitary
    Night of the Living Dead
    Psycho
    Poltergeist
The Ring (though it got dated fast)

Oh, I thought of one more: Twilight. What a terrifying deconstruction of the self-destructive idiocy inherent in the fantasies of teenage girls and creepy authors who should know better.

Does Shadow of the Vampire count? That was pretty creepy, but I don't know if it's a horror movie.

(not in any particular order for me except the first one!)

Some of these aren't "horror films" necessarily, but they creeped me out just the same.

    1. The Exorcist
    2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
    3. The Ring
    4. The Blair Witch Project
    5. Ju-on (the Japanese original to "The Grudge")
    6. Halloween
    7. 28 Days Later (there's a tiny voice in my head that kept saying "this could happen, Sleepy")
    8. Nightmare on Elm Street (only the first one)
    9. The Shining
    10. The Thing (1981)

    Honorable mention: The Others

My fave horror movies are as follows (in no particular order):

    The Exorcist
    The Shining
    Prince of Darkness
    28 Days Later
    Cujo

I think that's about it for me.

Really? I watched it last year and was disappointed. And the mister really didn't like it.

I'm a huge fan of horror movies and every year in October I get nothing but horror movies from Netflix. I have a hard time finding really good horror movies because most are just gorefests, and I really do not need to see that. I prefer just really creepy shit.

I would agree that the Exorcist and the original Halloween were excellent. And while I haven't seen it since I was a kid Poltergeist scared the beejeezus out of me.

I know that 28 Days Later has been mentioned, but I find that 28 Weeks Later was even more scary.

I would also like to mention the original Last House on the Left as well. The remake was not nearly as bizarre. It's also interesting that this was Wes Craven's first movie...

My top ten (in no particular order):

    Alien
    The Thing (John Carpenter).
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1980s version)
    30 Days of Night
    The Omen (original). (plus sequels).
    An American Werewolf in London
    Halloween (original)
    The Blair Witch Project
    Carrie
    The Exorcist.

I'd like to have included some of the old Univeral Horror Movies, but sadly I own a few and they are really not scary anymore. It's the same with Nosferatu (the original), I have it on DVD and it's a moody classic, but not scary to our jaundiced modern eyes.

I don't really rate any of the Freddie Krueger, Jason type films much at all, but I guess that's just my personal taste.
