Do we want tags?
I've just noticed that we have tags enabled. Do we really want that?
Sure it is nice to have all threads carefully annotated with the respective degrees of fatness and retardation of the participants, but other than that I haven't seen them used for any real purpose.
Not sure yet, they could be useful but maybe we'll restrict taggers to a small group. It is easy to turn off at least.
As a tempory measure, users can add tags that already exist.

My two cents - Tags might be useful, and even funny tags are OK IMO, but I don't want to see snark tags here.

Right now, posters cannot create tags. Mods & Admins can. I am going to look for a list of tags to be imported.
I'm not sure how we'd prevent snark tags other than mods manually deleting them whenever we see them. I do agree with you on this, though. I'd prefer not to see hateful tags all over the place.Originally posted by Myrnalene

ETA: I just tried to tag it with Disney (which is an existing tag) and I got the same message so it looks like only mods can tag.

I don't see what purpose they serve. I guess I just can't really envision people going to the trouble of tagging threads in any way that makes them useful for searching. And the consensus appears to be that snark tags are not needed or wanted (which I wholeheartedly agree with.)
Some people will tag. So as we have a way to tag without snark, might as well role it out.

I didn't know what tagging was for so much.. Figured a googlebot could do well enough alone.. Eh, anyway, I asked my (gay) roommate that is more into the social networking/forums thing and he read this thread.. And just called all pro-taggers "tag-hags".. Though he says he has no opinion on the subject.
Let's use them like magnetic poetry.
Threads are being auto-tagged as we speak.
This will also build a large database of allowed tags.

Isn't it obvious? Every thread containing the word "Illinois" is auto-tagged with the illinois tag. That way, you are saved the trouble of going to the search page and typing "Illinois" in the search box, and instead simply have to go to the tags page and type "Illinois" in the "search by tag" box.

Actually, we figured out that if you go into "edit tags" and roll your mouse over the tag, it will show who added it.
But when I try it here, I can't see who did it, so I'm assuming that this is only available to Super Moderators and Administrators.I'm tempted to turn tags on full but promise to expose all snark.

Yeah, I'm not so sure, Jim. Just seems like it's one more thing the mods will have to monitor, and it won't be easy. I wouldn't want hard feelings around here because someone posts some snark that the mods don't catch.
Not really, so I won't do it. But tags are very useful when used correctly. If I want all threads tagged as Science, it is a great and repeatable search tool.
So I will leave it as right now where I and the mods will load the tags that can be used.

We have an excellent illustration of how people are most likely to want to use them from a very similar messageboard inhabited my mostly the same people. But the consensus in this thread, which I share, is that this is not the 'correct' use of tags.
I guess I just don't think it's all that likely that people are going to tag threads with search terms consistently enough to be anywhere near as useful as just plain ol' search -- and apparently it's going to require either that the modes police them, or that we only have a small (and inevitably inadequate, because no one could anticipate all the tags we'd need) selection, requiring the modes to constantly add new ones (assuming anyone bothers tagging their threads). From other messageboards I've used, I haven't gotten any impression that they're useful. Some boards even require each thread be tagged in order to promote them, but how many circumstances will there be when I want to, say, tag a thread "quantum mechanics" or "non-literate culture" or whatever but can't think of a way to just work those words into my post?
I don't know, I mean, knock yourself out if you want to give it a shot. There's no harm in trying, certainly, but it just strikes me as a waste of effort.
ps is it okay if i tag all my threads "michelle bachelet"? I like her.

I want tags.
Ok, I tagged this goddamned thread with the "tags" tag, which is possibly the most appropriate and bang-on tag tagging you will ever see, and someone removed my taggin' tag. What the tag is with that? Are you trying tag prove tagging will never be useful? Tag, taggety tag! Tag?
Simple answer, I have been using this thread to load the tags. So I load and clear, load and clear.
