Default Receipt checkers at big-box type stores

You're at Wal-Mart/Costco/Home Depot/etc., and as you're leaving the security guard asks to see your receipt (not singling you out, just asking every person as they leave). Do you show it to him, or walk on past?

I recently learned that some people get annoyed in the extreme with this policy, and refuse to show the receipt. This seems odd to me...like, who cares? It's a (very) minor inconvenience. But, apparently it's a matter of principle with some folks.

    What say you?

I do it because I don't care enough not to, and it's not like the poor person (IME it's usually a greeter) makes policy. Maybe that makes me sheeple, baah.

The other point to my mind is that I've only seen this at the various 'club' stores, where you have to buy in for an opportunity to purchase there: If you didn't like the rules of the club, why on earth did you join?

That pretty much applies to the other types of stores, too...you don't HAVE to shop there. They get to set their own rules, and the customer likes it or not, chooses to shop there or not.

Except, of course, that in some places there is little choice other than Wal-Mart.

I just walk past them like they don't exist. You can "Sir...SIR!" me all you want, I couldn't care less. If you think your employees are stealing from you, which they are, don't bother me about it because there isn't a thing I can do to help you and wouldn't even if I could. "Inventory shrinkage" exists everywhere and since I don't work there, it's not my problem.

If you think that I'm a theif, which I'm not, then have security detain me so I can blow my lid and try and get free stuff, which results in a loss anyway.

I also don't give out my real zip code, address, or phone number when asked unless I'm buying a big ticket item and it pertains to the warranty. I just make them up on the spot or give them the details of the McDonalds that I worked at when I was 15 and who must still get phone calls for me all the time.

I am in and out in a flash 90% of the time I'm shopping. Do not try and trip me up or slow me down as I have cold beer at home waiting for me.
Hell, if I didn't do things just because they made me feel a bit ridiculous, I wouldn't have much of a social life. - Santo Rugger.

Costco is the only place where I'll stop to have my bags and receipt checked, actually, and for this very reason: I did explicitly agree to it.

The only place I've ever had this done is at Costco-most other stores only want to check your bags if you trip the alarm going out. In any case, I don't see why it's such a big deal to let them check. Our Costco's very quick about it-even on a busy day I don't think I've waited more than two minutes.

I generally try and do what I can to make sure I'm not making anyone's job harder. Unless they're being a dick.

When asked I usually just keep walking, if they get uppity about it and insist on seeing my receipt, I ask if they saw me steal anything. I don't like being automatically accused of shoplifting after I just purchased 100 bucks worth of merchandise.

ETA-This is just at big box retail stores, for places like Cost-Co or Sams Club I understand that they check everybody on the way out.

It's never happened to me. I don't really know but I tend to be more cooperative for some reason.
I don't think so, therefore I'm probably not.

Hasn't happened to me since the days of Comp USA. I did not like it at all but I showed it to them.

I usually preemptively wave my receipt around at Walmart while I'm going out the door. I've never been stopped with that method.

Honestly, I can't imagine getting upset by such a thing. IME the people who make a big deal out of it (are offended or want to PROVE THEIR POINT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO!) are control freak types or overly testosterone riddled folks. Show them the receipt and get on with your life. Jaysus.

No CostCo here, darn it; I'm stuck with Sam's Club. But I did have a receipt checker catch an honest mistake one time. I was buying a bunch of stuff for a wedding reception and the cashier had missed the box of balloons with helium tank on the bottom of the cart. Since it was a largish purchase of stuff I don't normally buy, I didn't catch it either. Not all shrink comes from theft.

That was the impression I had of the folks I read about that prompted me to start this thread. Their comments were like "Legally, they have NO RIGHT." "Once I've made the purchase, it's MY PROPERTY." "They CAN'T FORCE YOU to show it." Geez louise, what's with the histrionics? Yeah, yeah, I know Wal-Mart is evil and all that, but this is hardly the worst of their crimes.

I won't pretend it's logical. Everyone has a few emotional, irrational buttons: one of mine is having the burden of proving I'm not a shoplifter placed upon me. Yeah, it's only 15 or 30 seconds. But to keep walking and cheerfully reply "No, you can't," takes zero.

Ok, I'll be more cooperative. Next time I'll just give them a receipt from a totally different store for something I purchased like two weeks ago, and if they say anything I'll just start crying and then start wildly gesticulating and speaking in rapid made up Chinese.

Something like that, yeah. Whenever I'm shopping in a store that checks receipts, I make sure I have mine in my hand as I'm walking away from the register, so I can show it to them as quickly as possible and save us all time. Sometimes at places like Wal-Mart where they don't do it to every customer and it's not a "club" type of store, it rather irritates me, but I can't think of the last time I went to a Wal-Mart and had my receipt checked.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

I've never encountered it, but I'd hate it and would likely refuse. Either you think I'm a good customer or you think I'm a thief, if I'm not stealing from you, then let me leave in peace.

With a name like yours, you're certainly pushing them towards one conclusion rather than the other.
