Mellophant is better without chat- A poll

So we've been without chat for a couple of few days now and I'm just curious if anyone thinks the boards have been better off without chat or not.

I vote no, I think threads get more pimping with chat. Also many threads are spin-offs of chat.

I voted "no."

I don't hate chat, but I rarely participate. The only things I ever had against chat were:

1) I suspected that it was sucking posting traffic away from the fora; and

2) It seemed to generate vicious flameouts that drove people off.

Issue #2 seemed to have died out over the last few months anyway, and if the board has been appreciably more busy without chat, I haven't noticed it, so there goes #1.

So, while I don't especially love chat, I can't think of a good reason we're better without it. That's what I think.

A smooth running local chat would be great, as Jim says it stimulates the messageboard, with offshoots and pimping of threads and whatnot.

I think the board is much worse off. The chat in exile is doing fine but activity on the board seems to have suffered. I have to admit that I didn't post much during the last days. Even if I don't chat all that much usually keep an eye on both the forums and chat in parallel and I suspect that it is the same for others.

Even the old chat required a valid login. As long as things stay that way I don't think that a password would help much.

We're doing it kinda on a ask and you shall receive basis. We actually have two chats. The regular chat and the sock chat and every once in a while everyone makes a fake name and we play in sock chat and try to guess who people are.

Sorry, I mentioned the other, temp chat in the "temporary chat thread" (and asked people to PM me to get the info) assuming that anyone interested in chat.....would read the chat thread. We are keeping the location and password in PMs instead of posting them on the boards in order to limit the members to actual mello members.

I can't decide whether to vote yes or no.

I don't necessarily dislike chat, I just hardly ever use it and pretty much forget it is there (when it is there). So naturally I don't miss it when it's not there. But as someone pointed out above its recent absence hasn't noticeably improved the overall Mellophant experience.

I PM'd the bunch of you and a few other with a long explanations of what is going on as far as I know.

Just a note, this is not a Mellophant chat, it is just a chat room Myrna set up quick as she was jonesing for chat. So this is not one of those invite only board things that gave Domebo grief to start with.

Please forward this PM to any Mellos you like, Myrna I believe just wanted to keep snarkers out of her chat room as it only allows 10 at a time, (it is free after all to her) and so she just let frequent chatters know to start.

Also I don't think we originally thought chat would be down this long.

Now please, I am just trying to provide facts as I know of. There are no snide insults here, no judgements, no only let the popular kids in or anything else. This PM provided simply to those that I noticed showed interest in chat.

Final note, this was not organized or thought out in any way shape of form. Hopefully Zuul and CIAS come up with a new chat or fix the old one soon. This board as it is now composed works better with chat on the board.

The message board and the chat are utterly, hopelessly intertwined with one another. A great deal of relationship building has been done in chat. Many of the ideas for policy changes, for good or for ill, have historically been brought up first in chat and then the board. This thread, which saved this community and led to the creation of Mellophant, was the result of a long and heartfelt discussion in chat about the future of this board. People, Zuul and your mods are in chat all damn day long. Many, many threads have been birthed by discussions in chat. Often the first thing someone does after they post an OP is to come and pimp it in chat.

This isn't at all meant to exclude the posters who don't chat or to say their experiences are less worthy, or that they aren't as tapped into the community, etc. But there is no way of talking about Mellophant as an entity without acknowledging that chat is a huge, HUGE part of what Mellophant IS.

So my answer is no.

However, I tend to agree with the people who say Mello is better wit chat. I don't go there myself, and I feel sorry that there is a tight-knit group I can't be part of because of that, but it seems clear that for better or for worse (and it has been both), chat is part of what we are.

Also, I did like being able to see it at the bottom of the page, even though I never more than glanced at it.
