I've uploaded my avatar, but when in a thread I don't see either mine or anyone else's. Is there something I need to enable elsewhere in order to see avatars?

Yes. All avatars, sigs, and images are defaulted to off. You have to go into your Control Panel, then under "Edit Options" turn them on under "Thread Display Options."

Head over to the Control Panel for this and go to the Edit Options. Look for the Thread display options section.
While you're there I recommend looking over all the options.

You need 5 posts to be able to upload an avatar. After that, you should have no problems.
