    Default Domer Voices

Once in a long ago time at the SDMB, someone created a site where posters could leave audio messages - the point was to hear the actual voices of people that we had been interacting with. I still remember matt_mcl's cute little Canadian voice. I thought it might be kinda cool if we could do this here, and put voices to our names and personalities. I'm sure there is a super easy way to do it but I don't know it because I am hurr durr.

Does this sound interesting to anyone else? What's the best way to set something like that up? Please respond I feel like an idiot.

Alright, I made a .wav file of me reading a poem. I need somewhere to upload it to, though.

Julie, were you purposely pitching your voice in a bit of a whisper or are you really that soft-spoken?

How do you record your voice and get it uploaded so people can hear it online? Then you can all hear my cute little Western Canadian accent. I also see that some have play and download, and some just have download. I don't really want to download, if it's all the same.

I recorded mine with the microphone for my computer and it saved it to a .wma format (which I don't know how to convert) which I think is why you have to download mine. (You can just open instead of saving it, though.) Then I went to www.box.net/ and it took like two seconds to set up an account there. All you need to enter is your email address. Then I just uploaded the file. If you already have something saved on your computer with your voice on it you can upload it to box.net and post the link here.

For British Domers, the British Library tried to record all the accents and dialects within the British Isles at the turn of the Millennium. Here's the sample from the village next to mine (I don't think my accent is exactly like that, though).

Perhaps British Domers without mics can provide similar links?

Someone one the Dope got all sneery at me once for saying I had trouble with some accents hailing from the British Isles. Obviously, that person never listened to that clip.

Interesting, how did you expect me to sound? I know my voice is pretty high for a big guy. I can hit the high parts on "Creep" on Rock Band without any trouble. I have pretty good range, I can sing low too, but lack control.

I suppose it's because you look a bit like a friend of mine who has a deeper and gruffer sounding voice. Subconsciously I suppose I expected you to sound like him. Also I hear a little Texas but it sounds more Mid-Western-y that I would imagine.

A slightly different approach: here's one of me singing (video, requires QuickTime). It's not my favorite recording of myself*, but it's the only one that's online. A couple of things:

    1. This is the entire commencement ceremony for my university from last year. I sang at the beginning, but the video includes the procession. If you drag the little circle thing so that it's just about at the left edge of the sixth chair from the right, it'll be about in the right place. If you see Chris Matthews speaking, you've gone too far.
    2. This video might be replaced by this year's commencement in a month or so. Just in case you're seeing this in a couple of months.

*It's an odd arrangement that starts out really low, pushing the bottom of my range, then it modulates up a major sixth and pushes the top of my range. I was also more nervous than I usually am, since I was singing for rather more people (about 15,000) than I usually do, and Quincy Jones was there.

This is me narrating. My emphasis is weird as a result. Also, there was alot of background noise so I had to clean it up a bit, which means I lost some quality.

Here I am reading a bit of Chat: http://www.box.net/shared/428i43nhxl
I just realized you read chat like you are narrating a baseball game.
Somehow that figures, though it was not intentional. I'm sure it just came out that way. Lord knows, I have listened to parts of over 4000 games in my life. I also have storytelling mode for when I am making up stories on the fly for my kids or even D&D games.

Your voice is deeper and more authoritative than I imagined. Stentorian, almost.
The nasal doesn't come through? I was always bugged by the nasal tone of my voice, not pointdexter bad, but noticeable.

You have a beautiful voice Julie, you sound like you could do Ken Burns documentaries.

A couple of days ago in chat, I promised Myrna that I would post to this thread as soon as I could think of something witty to say. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of anything original, so I decided to recite a few of my pimpin' lines from Sleeps's masterpiece, .

    Here we go.
