Arnold Winkelried (a decent fellow, don't get me wrong) explains how to figure out the rule about responding to moderators in their dual role as posters and lords over the land and sea. It's easy if you know how to diagram sentences and draw up logic tableaux. I hereby invoke fair use so that I may examine the content editorially. Or if you prefer, satirize and ridicule it.
I can help. I speak Dope. That [what answer would be appropriate where] doesn't seem that hard to me. If you are disagreeing with something that he did in his capacity as moderator, then respond to that part of the post in ATMB. You can include a link in the original thread if you want. Like people say in MPSIMS "I'll see you in the Pit, click here". If you are disagreeing with something that he said as a poster, then respond in the same forum. If you think you can't tell the difference, then ask in the thread or via e-mail to a moderator "where should I put my response to this portion of your post?" Or just post in the same thread with an explanation "I think my response should go in here, but if not, feel free to remove and I will start another thread elsewhere."
First and foremost, copy and save your post, just in case it is indeed removed. "Removed" means that its offensive content is deleted, never to be seen again except by screen capture and uploaded j-peg when it suits or benefits the mod in question.
Also, prepare for your readership to change from people who have a vested interest in the discussion underway to people who never even opened the thread, but find fresh meat with your OP. You will not win. You will encounter everything from "Why did you open a whole new thread about this?" to "Why is everyone so rebellious about all this? I love being shat upon."
You will have to explain that you were TOLD to open a new thread, but that fact will assuage no one. You are now blaming someone else for your fuck up. You are being overly dramatic. You have a martyr complex. Your complaint is ridiculous.
There is also the option to e-mail the mod, much as I did in April, 2002. But once I got my response in October, the matter was pretty stale. TubaDiva, of course, is the most notorious e-mail black hole. We know of her excuses because in times of deepest humiliation she has deigned not to snark and growl but rather to commiserate. Her service has been down. She's been sick. She's been busy looking for work. She tries to check her e-mail frequently, but oh the days just fly by.
Now, it is important that you understand that, before all that, you must make the discernment of whether the moderator in question was acting as a poster or a moderator. Normally, this is exactly the thing a moderator should have cleared up, without leaving you to figure it out. But the onus is on you to decide, because your response is the announcement of your decision.
Decide incorrectly, and you will bear the full force of judgment. But a correct decision is merely the first step in a confusing process of posting here or posting there or opening a new thread or sending an e-mail or responding directly or just shutting the fuck up.
Therefore, the only safe response is no response. Thus sayeth the High Power of the Air.
