Just noticed that Rawlings forgot to assign Rangin in the lineup. I was about to respond as Nia by just ignoring the Collins instructions, but I'm not sure how Rawlings would suggest deploying Rangin in that group--plus, without Collins, who's gonna flank the door, Nia or Garcia? (FWIW I'd assume Nia's probably got better targeting skills than Garcia, being a semi-reptilian pilot; if it were a hand-to-hand battle, though, she'd be a poor choice--we know her endurance isn't great.)

At least it gave me more time to decide what the heck I should have Nia do. I am not the world's greatest tactical mind, in case playing Kylah hasn't already clued y'all in on that!

anyrose has a memorial thread at the SDMB, apparently. I took a break from the Straight Dope right after the election (couldn't handle it) or I'd've seen this earlier. I'm kind of glad I didn't find out this way, though I'm not sure it matters. Still a terrible shock. She'd had such difficulties this year but things had begun to straighten out for her. So damn unfair.

I feel like Collins should have a good ending of some sort. A promotion or transfer back to the Enterprise, I don't know. Something anyrose would've enjoyed.

A year that keeps on taking. Dreadful news about anyrose and yes, Collins really needs to have a good ending.

Me, too, and thanks for letting us know, choie. I think a transfer for Collins to another ship would be a great idea (don't think I can handle another shipboard funeral).

Godspeed, anyrose, and thank you for all you brought to us here. May you rest in peace.

For two different reasons today I had cause to look back at earlier sections of the mission. Finding Nia's message to Graham before he left for the mission took me to June. And it was extremely painful to see anyrose's posts as Collins. How could we possibly fathom that she'd be gone six months later? Of course I had no idea at the time that my brother-in-law would be gone in two months either. Life pulls no punches, but it's somehow worse when they're sucker-punches you never expected.

Staggeringly bittersweet to return to that time when we didn't know what lay ahead. Just coming here is hard; so often I'd check the forum and anyrose would be online too. Incomprehensible to grasp that I'll never see that again.

(Of course CIAS is also offline far more than he used to be; hopefully, unlike anyrose, that unhappy absence will be rectified in a few weeks or whenever he's feeling up to it.)

The board seems much emptier now.

I have the same feeling sometimes. All the more reason, I think, to do our best to fill it up with fun and companionship.

Dang I know it's relatively empty in here but there's one hell of an echo going on in the game thread! (Are you guys getting "Database Error" whenever you try to post? I think the deal is that the message gets posted anyway, so there's no need to try again--that's what causes the double posting.)

Anyhoo I hope you have a good time, EH. And I hope we'll all have a good and, may it please Q, an uneventful new year.

Thanks, SG, and amen! And yes, I keep getting that Database Error message. When I check back, though, my post has gone up as it should.

The flu will do that to you. I've been suffering since around Xmas.

If I'm not back again, Happy new year to all.

I'll take a look at the db issue as well.

Aside from that, very much hope we can all look forward to a more hopeful 2017 than 2016...

Ugh! That's rotten. Hope you're feeling better as time goes on.

(Weird coincidence, but my sister and I (who haven't seen each other for a couple of weeks) both got sick on the same day--Christmas--too.)

If I'm not back again, Happy new year to all.
Happy new year to you too, but... I sure as hell hope you mean "If I'm not back again before New Year's." Please tell me that's what you meant!

Hi All - well a happy new year as it comes in and don't let the door hit 2016 on the way out.

Hopefully fixed the db issue as well.

Wait, did Graham intend to reveal that T'Var and Kylah are part of his team? Or did he inadvertently use his 'outdoor' voice in front of Cledd's cousin?

    PLAYER TALK:

Did anyone else play Infocom text adventure games back in the '80s? When a player got stuck, you could buy books called "Invisiclues" that included secret hints that only appeared if you used a special magic marker-type pen. They were kept invisible so that people could reveal just a first vague hint if they wanted, and let themselves figure out the rest of the puzzle. Or, if they were still stuck, the player could unveil another, easier clue.

I feel like I need a booklet for this part of the game! We seem to have hit a corridor with only locked doors, and I don't know what the key is. Kylah's done as much insulting and accusing as I can think of, and I thought that might get Krako or Cledd to do something, but other than Krako telling her to shut up, that seems to be all she's accomplishing. I know Nia can always push the 'nuclear option' by sending in the officers, but that seems super unwise when there are eight loose-cannon mobsters carrying machine guns. I'm loath to have her do something just because there's nothing else to do, y'know? Even I know that's not a good strategy, and I definitely think Nia should be a better strategist than I am!

So, any of you gents have any ideas? PM me if you want to keep 'em secret from our GM.

Ah it's a work thing so i won't have much chance to explore unfortunately.

Random tidbit - the plot of The Witcher 3 is about hte gruff and grizzled Witcher desperately trying to find his adopted and in jeopardy daughter...

Pretty much think of him == Graham

That was some action scene (thus far). I was sure Cledd was gonna die! I have a feeling Nia made a mistake on the chair move, though. About an hour after I posted it, I was like... wait a second, why is she getting all aggro on the goon before he even does anything? Crap, she's the one who's gonna cause this whole mess! When I can post (thread's closed... are we waiting for general_urko? I'd be okay with that, Graham's right in the middle of things & pretty important right now) I'll have to have her justify it... somehow.

Ooh hey I already pictured Graham like that... is it possible you mentioned the Witcher 3 idea before? Although not the daughter (I guess in this world, scars are inherited traits? And gray hair!) or the love interest(s). Graham's hair is dark, right?

Given the Booker/Elizabeth thing, I would've pictured a Bioshock:Infinite influence. Except I guess that Booker is too young.

LOL to the Bruces, EH. I understand there are also fearsome Australian warrior hunters (much like Geralt).

Bioshock is spot on! As Graham (and I) gets older and grayer and more grizzled I've been warming to The Witcher

You can't be much older or grayer/more grizzled since we started, considering I haven't aged a day over the same time period!

Oh gosh I hope we're not shutting down the mission entirely! What with Kylah getting badly injured {again! Jeebus! That makes her 4/4 as far as missions are concerned!) but this time right in front of Graham's eyes, and hopefully Rangin's too. We haven't even seen the squad burst in yet, or figured out what Cheverez was gonna say, or why Morris is now Mr. Heroic, or what that anomalous reading was. There's usually downtime after/before the various missions for us to get debriefed as well as let us work on our character development subplots (which may involve some debriefing of a different sort!). This should be a doozy with all the various recriminations/self-recriminations going on.

Surely it's just a pause while you have your down-under sojourn. Although the shut-down is a bit mysterious with no announcement. Has Q taken control of our game?
