What happened to chat?
There were multiple connections to it that ate up massive amounts of memory until the site ceased to function. Chat is fairly memory intensive at the best of times and this went far beyond that. To keep the site functional, we had to disable it for now. We're going to be looking at specific causes and how to prevent this from happening in the future, but CIAS and I both have lives and it's a holiday weekend, so I can't guarantee it'll be a quick fix.
if there's any telnet/irc plugin for vb that would pretty much solve all your problems.
There is and it would. Our die-hard chatters might slit their wrists because they're pretty attached to the one we're using now, though.
well you could no longer post displayable pictures in chat, but you wouldn't have any lag.
besides real IT doesn't speak to actual users.

I'm not activating it on the index right now because having it load for everybody who hits the index page ends up slowing things down. I'm going to see about making a more prominent link for it than this, though.
It's functioning OK for now, so it's remaining up. There's a link at the top of the index page and in the forum jump menu at the bottom of forum pages. It is directly under the Mellophant Community link: Chate!
