    Default Godwin Size Me

So artifex, little kid, and I went out for dinner tonight. We ate at a Mongolian BBQ joint. For those of you who don't know, Mongolian BBQ is a style of restaurant where you walk along a sort of raw ingredient buffet, and load up a bowl with raw meats, veggies, spices, and sauces. When you get to the end of the line, you hand your bowl to a nice young man who stir-fries all of it on a huge griddle, and throws it over some rice for you. Hot, fresh, and tasty. Mmmm.

The name of this place was Genghis Grill. Really? Really. I mean, I know Genghis Khan is the only Mongolian most Americans have heard of, but he's famous for some pretty bad stuff.

Tomorrow night, we'll probably be having sauerbraten at Hitler Haus.

I just had a yummy bowl of red soup at

    Stalin's Borscht Express

Actually, I am aware at least two other Mongolian BBQ places named for the elder Khan.

    There's a Kubla's Mongolian Pancakes near SarahFeena's house.
    (this is a lie)

Too bad you missed out on getting a bite to eat at Hitler's Cross Café. Hey, he was using a swastika as his national symbol! Must've been a decent guy.

There's a Mao Zedong themed restaurant in Dublin.

There's also a bar called Pravda, Soviet themed.

    Then there's this.

Hopefully, it's a gay bar run by gypsies and owned by jews, now.

Well, they do complete the trifecta of your average Hitlerite's most detested things.

A friend of mine actually has a bottle of "Hitler Wine" that he picked up somewhere in his travels. I don't recall if it looks like bottle below, but I will say I was surpremely jealous of his find.

This is very weird, actually. I mean, Genghis Khan is a national hero in Mongolia, like George Washington is in the US. Why wouldn't a person from Mongolia name something after him?

And, no, while he was not a fun guy, he was no Hitler or Stalin. Khan belonged to an earlier era, when being despotic and cruel was perfectly PC.

Similarly, "Attila" is a quite popular name in Hungary.

He was cruel, but he was also fair in many ways. He promoted religious tolerance, clearly communicated with his soldiers instead of keeping them in the dark, and brought the various Mongol tribes under one rule, which is something the descendants of those people are quite happy with now. One story about him that always stood out to me is that when his principal wife was kidnapped and gave birth shortly after her rescue--causing a lot of doubt about the paternity of the child--he embraced the child as his first son anyway. He also went on to have three more sons with that wife, instead of trading her in for a non-raped model. Hell, for a warlord of his time he was practically a hippy.

There are many leaders who did amazing things for their own people--Alexander the Great and Xerxes I of Persia immediately come to mind as examples not used in restaurant naming--but weren't exactly welcomed with open arms when they went a'conquerin'. (Also, despite what Frank Miller tells us, Xerxes was not a seven foot tall, half-naked hairless Brazilian man in makeup and piercings. He had a nifty beard, for starters.)

Indeed it is. There's a pretty well known artist in Vancouver whose first name is Attila.

Genghis Khan has more descendents than any other known person. A huge number of humans carry his genes - he apparently had hundreds of children by hundreds of women, and his sons and grandsons were no slouches in the reproducing department.
