    Default Avatar 3D - a small problem

Ok, so James Cameron's latest opus, the 3D film, Avatar is poised to sweep all across the globe in a frenzy of new technology that will blow us all away.

Apart from one problem. What if you can't see 3D?

3D glasses only work part of the time for me followed by a headache and I know several people who can't focus on 3D at all. It just doesn't work for them.

Is there a 2D version for the rest of us and will it blow us away as well, or will it just be a big budget Final Fantasy:Spirits Within clone?

I hadn't realized that this was in 3D. I hadn't paid much attention, so I'd thought when they made reference to that they were referring to the heavy use of CGI. Damnit. I can't handle those 3D glasses either. They make me vaguely nauseated and I have to concentrate the whole time to have my eyes focused just right. It's fine for a minute or two, like looking at a 3D picture in a book, but when I tried watching a video like that last year it triggered a migraine.

They're planning a huge release for the picture; I'm pretty sure it's going to be released in both 3D and regular. For the 3D they'll probably concentrate on IMAX theatres.

I'm in the same boat; don't have stereoscopic vision in normal life, so 3D does little or nothing for me. (And even if it works, it seems like a silly gimmick.)

I don't think anybody cares about your segment of the population and your 3D problems. 3D is being pushed because of the experience of it, something they hope will translate to less piracy and more ticket sales. In all reality 3D is being paraded as the potential savior of the movie industry. So in all likelyhood, at this point, I'm positive they just don't care. What would surprise me though is if they didn't make changes/improvements to make sure that more people with your issues can watch the 3d movies without pain. So, I guess stay tuned. Hopefully better glasses, cameras, whatever are on the way.

I for one haven't seen any of the new 3d movies in their full glory so I can't judge anything about the quality of the newest 3d movies. Has anybody seen any? Are they cool?

    You are probably right.

If 3D is the saviour of Hollywood can you imagine the pirated downloads.

"Aww man, we can't watch it, we can't download the glasses, piracy is over... "

3D doesn't really bother me (except for the minor annoyance oof fitting the 3D glasses over my regular ones).

Watching movies in IMAX gives me a hell of a headache, though.

I saw the recent Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was the best 3D film I saw and the only one improved by the 3D. However part of this was it was actually a bad movie and the effects were really excellent. It would be completely worthless in 2D. Of the other 3D films I have seen in the last 3 years (father of two so this = many) none of the them were enhanced by the 3D and it is still mostly just a gimmick and slightly annoying as the glasses are needed.

I have oddly almost no interest in seeing Avatar. The previews make it look like a video game cut scene to me.

Overall I prefer a movie made for and shown in 2D, call me when they come up with a holographic projector that eliminates the need for the glasses. I know they are working on this.

Avatar will be released in both 2D and 3D. I'm not sure why everybody thinks it's 3D only. Was that how Cameron originally planned to release it? Well, no matter. Even James Cameron doesn't have enough pull to announce that he's willing to lose millions on opening weekend and then stick to that plan.

Anyway, I doubt very much that the so-called savior of Hollywood is going to make the 2D experience obsolete any time in the near future. Too many people can't see 3D or won't pay the extra money. It makes no business sense to turn their back on that slice of the market.
I'm still swimming in harmony. I'm still dreaming of flight. I'm still lost in the waves night after night...

I saw Beowulf in IMAX 3-D when it first came out. I thought it was the shit, very impressed. I recently found the flick again On Demand and rewatched it... still good, but it was definately built for a 3-D experience.

Until I see Avatar I'll assume the same thing. It might be a great film on the screen, but I anticipate there will be parts exclusively designed for this enhancement.
