Default Please Welcome My RL Friend: Atlpagan

Atlpagan decided to join Mellophant after hearing about this group of rebels who banded together last spring. (You know how I go on and on and on - I think he wanted me to STFU)

He's outspoken, extremely opinionated and very sweet and for those who didn't get his name: he's a PAGAN living in Atlanta. (ha!)

    C'mon y'all and say hi.
They weren't singing....they were just honking.

Not to mention that, if he feels like jumping in with both feet, starting an "Ask the pagan" thread would be a great way to get to know each other, and spark some lively conversation.

Man that thread needs a friendly mod to clean up the broken size tags a bit and the sup tag too.

It has been dormant since June though in OneCent's defense.

Thanks for pointing that thread out, Orual. It appears to have been lost amidst shuffling, so I moved it over to the Ask the Expert forum, where I think it'll get better attention.

Welcome aboard, Altpagan. I'll have a look at your "Ask The Pagan" thread and see if I can think of a sensible question. Don't hold your breath!

At this point I consider myself an Atlpaganostic. Though I have not yet encountered compelling proof of the existence of Atlpagan, I am willing to extend a welcome should such evidence present itself.

I must also concede that, even if Atlpagan does not literally exist in an objective sense, perhaps the idea of Atlpagan can be said to exist as a shared metaphor which fulfills the mythopoetic need to ritually acknowledge posters from Atlanta that exists at some level within all of us.

If there is an Atlpagan, he is infinitely incomprehensible, since, having neither parts nor limits, he has no affinity to us. We are then incapable of knowing either what he is or if he is....

..."Atlpagan is, or he is not." But to which side shall we incline? Reason can decide nothing here. There is an infinite chaos which separated us. A game is being played at the extremity of this infinite distance where heads or tails will turn up. What will you wager? According to reason, you can do neither the one thing nor the other; according to reason, you can defend neither of the propositions.

Do not, then, reprove for error those who have made a choice; for you know nothing about it. "No, but I blame them for having made, not this choice, but a choice; for again both he who chooses heads and he who chooses tails are equally at fault, they are both in the wrong. The true course is not to wager at all."

Yes; but you must wager. It is not optional. You are embarked. Which will you choose then? Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have two things to lose, the true and the good; and two things to stake, your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to shun, error and misery. Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose. This is one point settled. But your happiness? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that Atlpagan is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that he is.

"That is very fine. Yes, I must wager; but I may perhaps wager too much." Let us see. Since there is an equal risk of gain and of loss, if you had only to gain two posters, instead of one, you might still wager. But if there were three posters to gain, you would have to play (since you are under the necessity of playing), and you would be imprudent, when you are forced to play, not to chance your life to gain three at a game where there is an equal risk of loss and gain. But there is an eternity of life and happiness. And this being so, if there were an infinity of chances, of which one only would be for you, you would still be right in wagering one to win two, and you would act stupidly, being obliged to play, by refusing to stake one life against three at a game in which out of an infinity of chances there is one for you, if there were an infinity of an infinitely happy posters to gain. But there is here an infinity of an infinitely happy poster to gain, a chance of gain against a finite number of chances of loss, and what you stake is finite.

Oh please, how can you deny the obvious? Surely, out of all the people in Atlanta, one of them is pagan! You are so going to Hell for your lack of faith.

I would like to add Pascal's Wager:
If Altpagan exists and you believe in him, when he shows up you will look smart in front of everyone.
If Altpagan exists and you don't believe in him, you will look foolish for your lack of faith.
If Altpagan does not exist and you believe in him, no harm. But at least you have the belief of potential, new Mellophant subscribers.
If Altpagan does not exist and you don't believe in him, well, who cares.

The Jews, out of reverence for the holy Name, simply write it TLPGN, a construction that later scholars would call the Pentagrammaton. The original pronunciation would eventually be forgotten, and later generations would take to pronouncing it "ottlepiggen."

This board is full of heathens! You doubt the existance of Atlpagan? Clearly you have never read the scriptures!

    Default My Humble Apologies

WOW, such gracious hello's Tis I the ATL Pagan (Atl being short for Atlanta). Sincerest Apologies for my absence since becoming a member. And to Jali thank you for reminding me that I joined this board.

I do exist! I am 100% Southern born and raised. (contrary to the belief that I sprung fresh from the soil in present form) I have a redneck family in South Cakalacky (Carolina for you Yanks) and I moved to an urban city to purge my soul of the plague of Southern Heritage that was inherent in my bloodline, the last male of a gleefully dying breed.

Yes I am Pagan. For those of you unfamiliar with Paganism and its origin, Pagan means "People of the earth" when it was first coined by the Anglican Church. It meant "Those who practice old earth beliefs". Paganism is the oldest form of belief within our species. Everything you know about your own belief system sprang from Paganism in some manner. (with much thanks to the Roman Empire)

I have yet to start a "Ask The Pagan" thread. To me the only purpose for a thread of this sort would be to challenge those who only think they believe what they believe. Depending on how this introduction is received then maybe. I am here to enjoy the corybantic rousings that Jali spoke so fondly (sometimes not so fondly) of.

So here I am. Thank you for your welcomes.

    Merry Meet!
Blessed Be! (not blessed as in "have a blessed day" but Bless-ed, meaning Be Joyous! Yet another religious conversion of a Pagan Ritual)

    -Atlpagan

    Welcome!

We actually have an Ask The Pagan thread that has, so far, been informative and mutually respectful. I would be interested to see how your beliefs and practices compare to the other pagans on the board, as pagans seem to be quite a diverse bunch.

Hail, Atlpagan, and well met. I hope that you will enjoy your time here at Mellophant. I confess that I know little about Paganism as a religion. However, I readily concede that your deity was by all accounts a distinguished and inspirational leader for the Kangaroos, and remains a credit to Australian League Football. Whether being voted "Coach of the Century" entitles him to divine status is, I suppose, ultimately a matter of personal faith.

But a' the whole tract of my time,
I found myself inclin'd to rhyme:
    When I see merry company,
I sing a song with mirth and glee.

    --Isabel Pagan
