    Default The Room

I was told it was bad. I was warned. Still, I was set on watching it. It couldn't possibly be worse than all of the other bad movies I've seen, right?

Oh. Oh no. It's worse. It really, truly is.

It's like the dialogue was written with Mad Libs or something half the time.

"We have a new client at the bank who is going to make us a lot of money."
    "Oh? Who's that?"
"I can't tell you! It's confidential. So anyway, tell me about your sex life."
    "I didn't hit her! I didn't! I didn't! Oh, hi Mark."

Oh, hi Zuul. Don't worry about it! Isn't Lisa beautiful today?

The craziest thing about this movie is that it's so sincere. Most bad movies are, but this one takes it a whole other level. It's like somebody in Tommy Wiseau's life genuinely hurt him and he's trying desperately to work through that pain. Except, he's insane.

My brother watched it with me (just as he dutifully watched the Twilight movies with me, for he is my Bad Movie Buddy) and one thing we both found baffling was the football tossing. It's as though Wiseau has no idea how human beings interact and had some weird, Asperger's like idea that male friends must play ball, so injected that into any scene where the male characters are together.

There were huge, strange inconsistencies throughout it as well. Like at the beginning it's clearly stated several times that Lisa and Johnny have been together for five years. Then at the end it's seven.

The strangest inconsistency is that there are 2 different actors playing the same character.

Wait, what? Is that the guy at the party who never appeared before? Is he supposed to be one of the other characters? I could not figure out what the hell was happening there.

Yep. That's him. The first guy quit without warning and instead of writing out the character or just never bringing him again, Wiseau just decided to hire a new actor.

That is bizarre. They didn't even hire someone who looked vaguely like him. That guy was tiny and bald. The next one was huge and had thick, dark hair.

I am now going to greet every person I meet with, "Oh, hi (name)."

I can't speak to the film, myself - I've only read descriptions of it. Nothing I've read makes me want to change that, either.

But what's baffling to me is that someone who could be with-it enough to make the money to bankroll this project (IIRC about $6 million) couldn't recognize that what he was producing was a pile of stuff. It's not the first time, of course, that someone could prove their inability to judge their the merits of their own brainchild, but it's a lot less common with someone who has managed to make a success out of some other project.

Though, I did have occasion to mention it to my sister and brother-in-law. I can't be sure whether I hope he makes her watch it with him, or not. I wouldn't want him to lose his sanity watching it.

If I remember right, Wiseau wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this cinema tour de force. But I could be wrong.

No, you're right. And nobody knows where he got the money to produce it. Also, nobody knows where the dude is from. He's a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

I'm not going to poke at the enigma - it might squirt and get some of the inner juices on me!

You mean this nutcase came out of nowhere with a few million dollars, made a psychotic movie, and nobody even knows why?!

My God. It's so beautifully insane.

That's basically it. When people ask him where he's from, he's refused to answer. Also, from what I've read, he's only vaguely mentioned "the garment industry." Which kind of sounds like something mafia related to me, but that's probably because I just read a book about the Chicago mafia.

I'm watching it right now, and I just remembered another unbelievably bizarre aspect. Lisa's mother announces she has cancer and it's never mentioned again.

That's bizarre. According to Wikipedia, he's claimed to have been born in France, grown up in New Orleans, and grown up traveling all over the world. And yet his accent doesn't even remotely go along with that.

Ah, yes. The cancer. The randomly blurted out "I'm dying!" moment that Lisa basically ignores and is never discussed again. Is her mother a drama queen and Lisa has good reason to ignore her? Is this showing us what a psychotic bitch Lisa is? There's no telling.

I strongly encourage everyone to watch the RiffTrax for this movie. It is amazingly hilarious.

    Oh, hi Gundhilde.

Yeah, I think I'll be getting the RiffTrax (and probably some alcohol) before I attempt to watch it again.

Poor guy, to be crucified by hipsters ad infinitum is perhaps the worst thing that could happen to a body.

Nope, he's cashed in on it. The hilarity his bad movie received made him repackage it as an intentional comedy (it clearly isn't) and he happily goes around soaking up the attention.

Indeed. This has brought him a degree of fame that he never would have had otherwise, and he's clearly enjoying the hell out of it. He even got to direct an episode of Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job! He's practically hipster culture royalty!

Yeah, I saw an interview with him in which the host was WAY too easy on his "conversion" to pawning this as intentional comedy.

    He is delusional.

There's even a trailer for it that plays it off as a big joke.

It appears in midnight showings just like Rocky Horror.

So the thing I want to know is: why the HELL isn't anybody calling him on this? Why aren't all of these smirking hipsters saying, "Whoa, dude. You're fucking nuts and you aren't fooling anyone"?

Dunno. Same question applies to a Jerry Lewis telethon.

Why should anybody call him on it? Everybody knows that he was serious and the movie isn't a comedy. Furthermore, everybody knows that he was serious. If I had the chance to tell him that his movie sucked and we all know he's an untalented buffoon, I wouldn't take it. For many reasons, but the first one is that I'm not a douche.
