Star Trek:The Motion Picture Kirk, now an Admiral, retakes command of the refitted Enterprise to stop a hostile and sentient massive energy cloud advancing toward Earth. December 7, 1979 $139,000,000

The Wrath of Khan While exploring test sites for the Genesis terraforming project, the U.S.S. Reliant is hijacked by Khan Noonien Singh, bent on revenge against Kirk who frustrated his plans to seize control of the Enterprise fifteen years earlier (in the episode Space Seed). Khan attacks the Enterprise on a training cruise with inexperienced Starfleet cadets led by Kirk who has not commanded a starship for some time. June 4, 1982 $97,000,000

The Search for Spock Concerned about McCoy's unstable condition since Spock's death, Kirk learns that in his final moments, Spock transferred his katra, or spirit, to the doctor. To reunite Spock with his soul, Kirk must violate a quarantine law and steal the Enterprise to retrieve Spock's body from the rapidly dying Genesis planet. June 1, 1984 $76,471,046

The Voyage Home Kirk and his crew head for Earth to stand at their court martial for the theft of the Enterprise, and its subsequent destruction, when they find Earth under siege by a giant probe transmitting a destructive signal—intended for the extinct humpback whales. Kirk takes his crew back to the late 20th century to retrieve some whales so they can respond. November 26, 1986 $133,000,000

The Final Frontier Exiled from Vulcan, Spock's emotional half-brother Sybok believes he is called by God and hijacks the partially-retrofitted Enterprise-A to take it to the Great Barrier at the centre of the Milky Way to meet his maker, while an ambitious young Klingon captain sets his sights on Kirk. June 9, 1989 $70,000,000

The Undiscovered Country After their homeworld is wracked by an environmental disaster, the Klingons attempt to make peace with the Federation though many on both sides are opposed. Just before the summit conference, Kirk and McCoy are arrested for the murder of the Klingon chancellor. December 6, 1991 $96,888,996

Generations An energy ribbon cuts a swath through the galaxy on the day of the maiden voyage of the newly commissioned Enterprise-B, and Kirk is presumed killed in an encounter with it. 78 years later, Picard and his crew race against time to stop Tolian Soren, a scientist intent on deflecting it into a planet to gain immortality inside it. November 18, 1994 $118,100,000

First Contact The crew of the Enterprise-E pursues the Borg back in time as they threaten to prevent first contact between Humans and Vulcans, thus destroying the Federation before its founding. November 22, 1996 $146,027,888

Insurrection The crew of the Enterprise aids a rebellion on the Baku homeworld against Picard’s superior officer, Admiral Dougherty, who wants to relocate the Baku to gain possession of the medicinal cosmic radiation that floods their planet. December 11, 1998 $112,600,000

Nemesis Captain Picard confronts the villainous new Reman leader Shinzon, a younger genetic clone of himself who kidnaps Picard to replenish his own DNA and uses an earlier prototype of Data to spy on the Enterprise while plotting to destroy Earth. December 13, 2002 $67,312,826

Star Trek An elderly Ambassador Spock attempts to prevent a spatial catastrophe, but is too late to save Romulus. He and a distraught Romulan ship are sent back in time to before the Original Series, changing the timeline. Young Spock and Kirk must thwart the vengeful Romulan survivors, who want to destroy Spock's two home planets—Vulcan and Earth. The film's "alternate reality" frees the film and the franchise from continuity issues.[39] May 7, 2009 $382,759,225

I'm going to have to take Wrath of Kahn and First Contact in a 2 way tie. Both have all the best elements of Trek but without all the filler BS. Also First Contact features the best ST bad guys ever, with the exception of Clint Howard.

Honestly, it's probably Wrath of Khan, but I voted for Galaxy Quest, as that it the one I love most truly.

Having only seen Generations, I am woefully out of the loop.

What order should I take them in so I can join in the poll?

Watch Wrath of Khan through Voyage Home to start. That is three good ones in a row.

I voted for The Voyage Home though I acknowledge Wrath was probably better. But with Voyage home it brought the humor I loved so much in the show to the forefront and the Save the Whales message really worked for me and the fact it was partially filmed on my ship the USS Ranger CV-61 and I got to be one of those hundreds of sailors used as an extra in the Hangar Bay scene makes it my favorite. So my order is as follows.

The Voyage Home (The Whale Movie)
The Wrath of Khan (Best action)
    Galaxy Quest (Best Humor)
The Search for Spock (Just a good episode if you will and Rev Jim as the bad guy worked so well.)
Star Trek ( The New One/The Reboot: Hokey as heck but a lot of fun)
First Contact (Very Good humor, the only Next Gen that was not sucky and instead it was very good)
The Undiscovered Country (Fairly good episode)
Star Trek:The Motion Picture (Well at least it re-launched Trek)
    The rest
The Final Frontier (Still better than the rest, but a bad movie.)
    Generations (bad)
    Insurrection (Awful)
    Nemesis (Awful)

I felt I had to vote for Star Trek (the recent one) because at least I enjoyed that.

I've seen the original series movies, and I vaguely remember 2 and 4 but the fact that I have no real desire to see any of them again makes me think I can't legitimately leave them in the running. I hated Generations, and First Contact wasn't great. So that leaves the new one, I guess.

Wrath of Khan is obviously the best of the bunch, although the new reboot movie is tremendously entertaining as well. After that, I'd go:

    Voyage Home
    Search For Spock
    First Contact
    Undiscovered Country
Generations (because Kirk is in it)
    Insurrection
    The Motion Picture
    Nemesis

I think there's a typo in the poll list as I am quite sure there was no Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
    Hell is other people.

Galaxy Quest is an absolute hoot! Very funny satire, extremely well executed. But not a Trek film.

I voted for Wrath, but I loves me some whales, too. I've never seen Galaxy Quest. I've also never seen the more recent Picard ones (except the one where Kirk appears).

Hell, I like 'em all. I'll even watch the first one (V-GER) and FF through all the starship porn shots.

I even like the new one with the rebooted timeline. Clearly, I need to get out more.

Rent Galaxy Quest or if you find it cheap, buy it. I've yet to meet a Trek fan that did not like it.

Yeah Galaxy Quest is a brilliant movie, if you haven't seen it you really should. That said, Kahn by a mile. Search for Spock comes in as a close second, but nothing can touch Star Trek II for pure Trekkie goodness.

"What is your second favorite Star Trek movie?" would have been a more compelling poll, I think.

    Mine is First Contact.

Ohh, that is a good poll question.

Search for Spock is mine (like I said) but it would be close. First Contact was great, the remake/reboot/reimagining thing that just came out was similarly great. The Voyage Home is probably less great than those, but it would be a tough call.

Second favourite for me is probably VI. At the time it was released my local cinema had an offer where you could see every one of the films from I to VI in a row. I really wish I'd gone in for that.

    Wrath of Khan, hands down.

Best plot line, best starship fight (of any of the Treks), best "bridge" and Engineering Set, and Lieutenant Saavik.

After carefully reviewing Star Trek movies (okay, so I just got Jim's suggestions off of Netflix and didn't bother with the rest) I have decided that Wrath of Khan is the best, simply because if anything was better people would never shut up about it. It was exciting and deeply emotionally poignant. Awesome.

I think it's because it's been around for so long it kind of provides a common link between a lot of generations.

You have the original series from the 60's, the movies from the 70's and 80's, TNG ,DS9 and Voyager from the 90's, Enterprise and the newest movie for the 00's.

since the late 60's, no matter how old you are, there is or was a Trek for your time. The series provides a common ground for people.

You make a good point. Growing up I did watch a lot of The Next Generation with my parents. That's why I know Picard is the best captain.

Spock's death never affected me emotionally. I guess it's because I knew he wasn't really dead, having seen the whale movie, the movie that doesn't exist, and the one with the prison planet first.

Honestly, I think the fact that the death was a fake-out diminishes the overall quality of the movie. Fore me, anyways.

It wasn't a fake out at all. The producer contacted Nimoy and said "How would you like to have a great death scene?" Nimoy never thought there'd be a 2nd Star Trek movie after TMP (with good reason!) and he was intrigued by this. They hammered out the story and the script and Nimoy agreed it was a really great moment for Spock, so he signed up. The death was always meant to be permanent. They went into filming believing that was the end, and Nimoy wrote in I Am Spock that he found the whole day very emotionally stressful and was deeply, deeply sorry that he was going to kill his old friend (he has a weird relationship with Spock. Seriously).

On the day of the scene, the producer told him to "add a little touch." Not because the 3rd movie was planned. It wasn't. But because the producer worked in television, and in television, you always have a mind for the next episode (or several episodes). After some consideration, Nimoy suggested he would touch De Kelley's face and say "Remember" because that was pretty open ended. The director didn't care as long as he got his shots. So Nimoy did it, completed his scenes, and figured he would be moving on with his life--without Spock or Star Trek.

But Wrath of Khan opened to rave reviews and huge box office success. When they realized they had a real hit on their hands, Nimoy was contacted again and asked if he would be interested in bringing Spock back somehow. And eventually that led to The Search For Spock.

I grew up knowing that Spock "survived" because of The Whale Movie (first ST movie I ever saw). But I still cry at that scene. Not because he's going to be gone forever, but because it was such a heavily emotional and poignant scene. Captain Kirk "won" the day, but at the cost of his best friend and brother. And with Spock's last breath he offered his final words--a promise of friendship. Friendship that he once said made him feel "ashamed." The whole movie was a meditation on growing older, on friendship, on loyalty, on the bonds of love and hate that tied people together. Of course it had to end with a sacrifice--it had to end with Kirk learning he couldn't cheat death. And he learned it by losing the person who mattered the most. A person he couldn't even touch and offer comfort to because of the glass between them. Not to mention the cold, cold logic of "the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few...or the one." Who could argue with that even while watching Spock slowly die of radiation poisoning?

I actually start crying when Spock runs into the glass because he's been blinded. He can't see Kirk and Kirk can't touch him. And as far as either one of them know, that's the last moment they'll ever spend together. Separated by glass and darkness.

It makes me happy. I don't know why other people watch the movies or shows they watch, but I have pretty basic criteria. I just want my entertainment to make me happy, make me smile, make the rest of the stupid world bearable for a little while. Captain Kirk is a man of integrity, courage, and good humor. He does the right thing at the right times and when he makes mistakes, he fixes them. The stories were all about how these awesome men did awesome things in awesome ways--even in horrible situations where nobody could win. That makes me feel pretty good. For me, not many shows do that. Especially current ones. Even the comedies are usually dependent on awful people doing awful things and that's great (my favorite sitcom is It's Always Sunny...) but sometimes I like something more than that.

The thing with Wrath of Khan is that I and a bunch of friends from High School all went to see it the week it opened. In fact I saw every Star Trek film 2-7 when it opened with a group of friends. I saw Star Trek IV in the huge Point Loma theater that had a line 4 blocks long to get into it. I then saw it again at a Drive-In with a bunch of friends and at least one other time the week it opened.

Anyway, when Spock died it appeared to be final. It was really moving and sad. He was actually my favorite character.

There were no rumors it was not final. There was no Internets with rumors to spoil things so I actually went into ST III not knowing how they would bring Spock back, only being sure they would find a way.

I think Trekkies should be on the list.

Dayum, Pepperland--you made me tear up!

And my husband came back from his mother's house with The Coolest Toy Ever: an old Viewmaster of "The Omega Glory" episode in thrilling 3-D and color! Awesome.
