Lightly Seared On The Reality Grill
This has been my favorite song lately.
This kid
does a decent cover of it.
God, I haven't thought about Odelay in years. I used to be totally in love with that album. Nice pick Zuma.
Odelay will always be a favorite of mine, as I lost my virginity listening to it. Weird music to screw to, but a quality album overall.

Tuesday 9/2
No music, no anything beyond Son House belting out this haunting slice of something that falls nicely between the blues, a stump preacher, and a chain gang work chant. Powerful stuff.

I always liked Beck in the way I liked, say, Offspring. I always enjoyed his music without really seeking him out. It's only recently I've been turning into a semi-fanatic. I'm always late to the party.
We're a bit behind here. Here's three on a theme...

I didn't make the world this way, it was like this when I got here

Heather Nova, .
Played at a reasonable volume on a good stereo this is absolutely euphoric.
Live she can do this really badly or with ecstasy inducing perfection. Fortunately the gig my daughter and I went to was of the latter variety.

Wow, Myglaren. That is absolutely gorgeous. Heather Nova hasn't crossed my radar before and it's clearly been my loss.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.
She flies pretty low and is somewhat hitty-missy but the good stuff is outstanding. Check out the other thread with Sugar, slow starter!
This one is for yesterday, seeing as no-one grabbed it
has to be one of the best covers ever. Hadn't heard it before I bought the Wonderlust album.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.
I bought "Oyster" first and still think it was the right one to start with.
Probably "Wonderlust" next, then "Live From The Milky Way" (another excellent version of "Sugar") then Red Bird.
She has just released a new album, "Jasmine" but I haven't heard it. She's on in London in November, will probably go and see her again.
You're going to talk about Heather Nova and not mention Siren? See: . Excellent album. (okay, and I second the recommendation for Oyster)
Taumpy: Oh noes, you aren't a super powerful wave of destruction.
Panther Squad: It's true! My scythe does not shorn the biomonsters in great swaths like it ought!
Recommendations duly noted.![]()

Siren was the third album I bought but IMO the others noted above are all-over better although Siren does have some excellent tracks on it.
It's 09-09-09
So for todays offering I bring you a little something from the band 999

(yeah, I know, I posted that link before, but it's the easiest clip of theirs to find and you can't say that it isn't appropriate.)

Mylene Farmer:
Lovely, Myglaren.
Since we missed the 10th, I'm doing September 10th, 2009 now.
Darren Hayes, .
The song was released in 2005, with the greatest hits compilation for Savage Garden. The song was written for Hayes' partner, Richard Cullen, whom he married in a civil partnership ceremony in London on June 19, 2006.
Saturday the 12th, is a day for Madness:
Sunday 13th September 2009.
Saturday 10th? where did that come from - been a long day is all I can say
Thanks for the comment Zuul - It is lovely - and not. It is about child abuse.
I thought is was Mylene's birthday today but it was yesterday
Wow. That was beautiful, strange and tragic. What is it that the song itself is about? I can't find a translation.
To my eternal regret I never learned French and although I keep threatening to do so nothing seems to happen.
It is mainly the sounds I relate to although I do like to hear the French words, despite being only able to understand a few. So much prettier than English.
(I drive French cars too and have done for many a year, someone may be able to read something into this?
There is some info on the song in Wikipedia
She is said to be a very clever wordsmith and many of her songs operate on several levels. Perhaps this is why she doesn't sing in English.
She is often rather risquee, but then, she is French
The not speaking French thing may be a problem as I'm off to see her in Brussels next weekend. Last show of what has been rummoured to be her last tour before she retires.
Monday September 14th:
Chris Thile - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.
Chris Thile is known as one of the best and most innovative mandolin players to come on the scene in a long time, and while this song may not capture all of his instrumental prowess it's A. One of the only covers of the White Stripes that should be allowed by law, and B. I love bluegrass covers of mainstream rock music.

Continuing the Mylène Farmer theme as it is her birthday week.
This is was banned in France, not for the eroticism but the violence and gore. NSFW

Very long intro.
One of her very early concerts. Must get this DVD.

Damn! already done today's earlier, seems like weeks ago.
Hi, all Song of the Day participants! Whoever posts one on a given day, can you please shoot me a PM to let me know you did? I'm posting links to the board on Twitter, and want to tweet this thread each day when it's updated.
Friday August 18th 2009.
Last post before I get to see her live.
The tears are genuine.
Tuesday August 22th 2009.
.
It was a fabulous concert. Not as elaborate as some of the previous ones but impressive nevertheless. She was magnificent. Looked so tiny and fragile but full of energy. Her singing was faultless.
A great experience all round. Met lots of French people who were all very warm and friendly, completely unlike the stereotype.
Thursday September 24th
.
Have this album on the home stereo now. Very rarely get the chance to use it.
The title is taken from "Carlito's Way"
For the name of this album, Farmer drew her inspiration from Al Pacino's sentence in the 1993 film Carlito's Way, that which appears inside the digipack : "All the stitches of the world cannot sew us again".
To promote her album, Farmer accepted to participate in the TV news of August 31, 8 pm, on TF1. Interviewed by Claire Chazal, she explained that she used the singular in the title of the album because it is (in French-language) a pun between "Stitch" (which evokes a hope) and "No suture" (which expresses a despair).
In an interview for the French gay magazine Têtu, Farmer confided that, if somebody did not know her work, she would wish that this person learns to know her through the hidden track of the album, "Ave Maria", whom she had previously performed in June 2008 during the funeral of the composer Frédéric Botton.
Nothing for today yet, so I'll step up. Someone should give Myglaren a break.
St. Vincent -
Thanks Taumpy, needed that.
Apologies but I completely forgot about the emails Sarah*.
Still haven't recovered from the concert and fell ill during the week.
