Default Which movie should we go and see?

Tomorrow night, artifex is taking me out for my birthday. We're planning to see a movie, followed by sushi and sake bombs. Which movie should we see?

If you vote, please post any relevant commentary, but kindly to be not spoiling either movie. Thanks!

Inglourious Basterds is watchable if you like your spaghetti westerns crossed with nazi war movies where the jooz kick ass!

District 9 is not the sort of film I'd have expected from Peter Jackson and you may be off-put like myself if you don't like South African accents.

I saw previews for District 9 when I went to see the hangover and I thought it was a clever commercial at first, not a movie. While it’s a different take on things, I didn’t like the looks of the aliens (I’m very choosy about my imaginary beings) and I didn’t care for the whole feel of what they were previewing.

On the other hand you have Quentin Tarantino making a war movie.

    Easy choice.

Tarantino is usually a pretty safe bet.

I haven't seen the Tarantino flick yet, and yeah, his movies are usually fairly good so either way you are probably safe. That said, I am voting District 9.

District 9 is the best science fiction film to be made since Blade Runner. In fact, it's actually better than Blade Runner which is, on it's own in it's original format, not very good. So District 9 is probably the best non horror, live action*, science fiction film ever made.

Now if you aren't in the mood for awesome science fiction, go with Inglourious Basterds, it's bound to be a good time.

*The actual best science fiction film in movie history was Iron Giant, but it's not fair to pit the two against each other since the animated aspect of Iron Giant makes if very different.

I say go see Extract. A comedy seems more birthday-ish to me.

District 9 is definitely not date material, unless you intend to spend the whole film snogging on the back row.

As for the above claim by NAF about its brilliance, take it with a mega pinch of salt.

Fair enough. It's not a date movie, but I figure that a date movie isn't really what is being asked for.

If you want a barometer on my feelings about the movie though, I also really loved Children of Men, which many people disliked (though I think seeing it in the theatres helped with that one a lot). So, as always YMMV.

Still, I can't think of a better straight up science fiction flick (again, barring Iron Giant).

Not so much. I mean, we do live together, and while we go on dates when occasion permits, this is more of an attempt to see a grownup movie while it's still in the theater, for once.

I've heard D9 is really good, and I love scifi films, so I've been wanting to see it for a while. And I liked Children of Men. (It is, however, not *my* birthday )

D9 and IB are both great films. Go see both.

Why isn't that a poll option?

I voted for District 9 just because I could only vote for one. There really isn't a wrong choice. I liked the ending for that flick better though.

I plan to see both eventually; I'm very excited about both movies. This poll is really more about which movie to see tonight, and in that context, "both" is not an option because I wouldn't want to saddle our babysitter, even though she is my future sister-in-law and has the patience of a saint, with a seven hour date. :wink

Perhaps, but the loss of our babysitter would be worse

So...what movie did you decide on? Was it the available showtimes that made the real final decision for you? (That's what usually does it for me when there is more than one movie I want to see).

Actually, yes. We had pretty much decided on District 9, but the theater we wanted to go to wasn't showing it, so Inglourious Basterds it was, and no regrets!
