Default Middle Earth Fan Fiction: The Tale of Garion Fairbairns, eldest grandson of Samwise Gardner.

In the dark recesses of time on a world that could have been ours there lived a Hobbit named Garion Fairbairns. He was the eldest child of Elanor Gardner who was in turn the eldest child of Samwise and Rosie Gardner. Samwise of course was the seven time mayor of the Shire following the years of unrest. He was already renowned for his role in the Steading of the Shire and especially for the restoring of much of the beauty of the Shire. Under his time as mayor, the Shire prospered like never before. There was much export of food to the Northern Kingdom of men that was growing north of the Shire. Samwise was also famed beyond the Shire for escorting Frodo Baggins to the Cracks of Doom themselves in far away Mordor. Here he helped defeat the Dark Lord himself and restore the human High King. It is said that when Rose died, Samwise road into the Faerie and was allowed to enter and stay. Some say he was given Elven immortality though the wise doubt this.

But this is not his tale, His is recorded in the famed Red Book of Westmarch. This is also not the tale of Elanor or her husband Fastred the first Wardens of the West March. This is the story of their son, one small Hobbit by the name of Garion Fairbarns. He was the most exceptional of the exceptional horde of grandchildren of Samwise. He was not your typical Hobbit and no giant like his uncles Meriadoc the Magnificent and Thain Peregrin Took. In fact he was fairly short, stood but 3’3” in his elven boots. He had sandy almost golden curly hair and a pleasant honest face. He also wanted to be an adventurer. He taught himself to master the art of knife and dart throwing. He was competent with a short sword. He could ride ponies and row boats and even swim. He excelled at fishing and climbed like a squirrel. His agility was great even by Hobbit standards. He took to his studies of languages well. He read Quenyan and spoke it poorly but spoke Elvish well, very well for a young Hobbit. He could read and write and loved runes and maps

In his short life he had already climbed the Elven towers numerous times, visited Bree and even up to Fornot and Evedim the chief towns of the North. He recently visited the Grey Havens, the great Elven port on the Gulf of Lune. On his trips he was always in the company of family members or Dwarves.

On his 33rd birthday he was given a great party at the famed party tree near Bag End. One Hundred and forty-four Hobbits were invited. His huge family, the Cottons and some Baggins, Tooks and Grubbs were there. At his party he was presented a few inheritances and a special gift. The inheritances were from Samwise, who had gone over the sea. It was the Mithril Chain Mail that the Mad Baggins Bilbo brought back from a Dragon’s hoard and was as fine and lightweight as the Dwarves and ever made. He was also given Sting, the small sword of Gondolin. This is the bane of the great spiders and orcs and was forged in fabled Gondolin. Now Hobbits normal give gifts on their birthday and Garion did just that, but the Human King and Queen sent him a special gift that was left in the care of Queen Arwen’s handmaid, Elanor the Fair. The gift was a matched set of a Cloak of Lórien and Elven Boots. The Cloak was made by the Queen herself. Though human, she was born of an Elven mother. In this cloak Garion would be warm in the cold but not hot in the heat. He could also blend into anything around and completely hide in any coverage or shadows. The boots were subtle and soft and made him fleet of foot and very light of foot. He would learn swiftly to move without leaving tracks.

Should I flesh this out? Do you want to hear of his adventures?

Go for it man. If you've got a story in you, then out with it!

He's starting out pretty indestructible isn't he? Already he's the most well-armed Hobbit of the Fourth Age. Presumably the Shire learned from the Scouring that you can never have too many adventuring juggernauts on hand.

Why would a Hobbit need Elven boots to move silently though? Don't they already come by that knack naturally?

And what kind of a Hobbit-name is "Garion" anyway? Isn't that from a different fantasy series entirely?

So speaks Terrifel the Terracotta; wielder of Pityanul, Ring of Petty Criticism.

As it is really the tales of a D&D character in one of my games. Garion is an odd name indeed. The Character started as a PC was abandoned and I adopted him to keep a treasure finder in the party.

Aha, I was trying to remember whether Elven boots had any textual precedent, or were just from D&D.

I'm sure it's not an unreasonable extrapolation though. Surely Tolkien's Elves made their own boots, and no doubt they were really good boots.

Actually I believe Legolas was wearing the archetype Elven Boots when he ran across the snow in the Pass of Caradhras.

Hey, everybody. My first post in Mellophant!

I'd be glad to read more about Garion IF your writing won't delay the resumption of Gil-Gandel's Fellowship's adventures by more than, oh, say, a nanosecond.

Cool, actually it should help to re-prime my pump and get the creative juices flowing again needed for the interactive storytelling we do.

    Not Elfstan then.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of it as well as the game continuing onwards.

I'm working on the first chapter after the introduction. But I already need to revise the intro. Garion was the son of Elfstan and one of Peregrin Took's daughters. The Wardens of the Westmarch. Garion went adventuring around Fourth Age 110. Not around 65. So most of the fellowship is already dead or gone. Only Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are still around.

I finally got a chance to pick this back up.
