Default What to call the new decade.

Well, somehow the Tensies doesn't sounds right.

Not after the Twenties, Thirties, Forties, Fifties, Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties and the Noughties.

And does this mean in 10 years time, we get to start re-using them again. I wonder what the Roaring Twenties will be like in ten years time? Probably too hot from Global Warming.

The "Teens" I would think would work well.

What do we do for the first couple of years? The pre-teens?
Something tells me we haven't seen the last of foreshadowing.

Who cares? The world ends in 2012 anyways.

There was a lot of speculation around 1999 about what we were going to call the coming decade. In the event, we sort of avoided it, as far as I know. I've heard a few references to "the naughties" but those have all been tongue in cheek. And once in a while, "the two-thousands," but that's awkward. When it has been absolutely essential to refer to the first decade of the new millennium, I've usually seen it as "the first decade of the new millennium."

I'm guessing that commentators will similarly manage to get by without many references to the period between 2010 and 1019, but "the twenty-teens" might do in a pinch.

Or even the Tweens though I of course still insist that refers to people in their twenties and not 10-12 year olds. Prior usage via Tolkien of course should precede the modern base usage.

Well, the 1910s were usually called the 1910s, so I'd propose calling the 2010s the 2010s (twenty-tens, or 'tens).

And of course 2010-2019, although it is a ten-year period, isn't actually a decade of the century; the second decade of the 21st century will be 2011-2020. But it's a convenient bit of cultural shorthand.
