    Default The Corbomite Maneuver

This is the episode of the week.

It's a good episode, but I'm just not that into this one. Uhura is in yellow (wtf?) and there are some major wardrobe malfunctions with Spock's and Sulu's uniforms. Plus, Ron Howard's little brother is just creepy looking. I find Lt Bailey physically repulsive (something to do with his teeth and mouth), so that colors my view. Oh, yeah--and Spock yells. Oy.

Then again, the interplay between McCoy and Kirk is nice, as is the bit between Rand and Kirk. I also like how Kirk likens what he is doing to poker.

    Thoughts?

I think this is an interesting first contact episode, demonstrating the inherent dangers in their mission and the delicate maneuvering the crew needs to do when engaging an unknown race -- one bad decision and everyone dies. Kirk's ability to command is right at the forefront here. He rules all and the corbomite bluff (which he pulls out of his bag of tricks again in a later episode) is ballsy and awesome. I always found the Balok character to be fairly engaging, especially since we only get to see him for a couple minutes at the very end of the episode.

I could sure go for some tranya right now...

According to Harlan Ellison, Roddenberry had exactly one idea -- The Enterprise discovers God, and he's a child, insane, or both. Hmm....

I know. I was unusually pissy when I posted the OP. It IS a good episode.
