Default THE RULES & FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Being revised for Mellophant

    The rules:

    Post content:

    Don't be a jerk, specifically:
No personal insults outside of the Pit of Rage.
    No trolling.
No misrepresentation of other people's posts, when quoting,
Outside of the Pit of Rage, no changing other poster's names when replying.
If insulted outside of the Pit of Rage, do not respond in kind! Every post has a "report this post button" underneath it---use that and let the mods sort the problem out.
Note: after a poll of members, the ban on hate speech has been rescinded, as it was much too broad and not well defined. Outside of the Pit of Rage, you are still subject to the rules above. Within the Pit of Rage, have at it.

    On Editing:
Edit history is on and all edits will show. Global Moderators can see your changes.
Editing is allowed for 15 minutes and for the Title of the Op is 30minutes as is adding a poll.

    On moderation:

Rants about moderators and moderator actions go in the Pit of Rage, other comments and questions go in AM.
There is no fixed number of warnings before a user is banned, this is up to the discretion of the moderators.
Moderators will always make it clear when they are acting as moderator, and when they are not, specifically, it will be clear if you have been formally warned.
No "junior modding": that is, do not misrepresent your status as a moderator.

    On Socks:

We don't care. Go nuts. If your sock attacks people, we'll 101 it. If your sock is too disruptive, we'll ban it. Make enough disruptive socks and we'll IP hunt you down, come to your house and kick your ankles.

    Avatars:

    Keep these safe for work.
    No flashing or animated avatars,
Anybody using joke images, such as browser crashers, will be instabanned.

Chat: Chat is invisible to those with less than 5 posts.

The bar on language is relaxed in Chat, just keep it semi-relevant. If you have a personal issues with another poster, take it to the Pit of Rage. No stalking allowed of course.
If you have a problem with a post and don't know what to do, please PM the Global Moderators group.
Moderators will delete posts as needed and have access to a chat log to review problem reported that are now off the scroll.
Safe for work Images are allowed in chat. Moderators will delete any they deem questionable without consultation. NSFW and Porn will draw warnings and time in The Cage. Those in The Cage are now barred from chat.
Chat specific FAQ has been added below.

    A word on Moderator Discretion...

It's impossible to foresee, name and categorize every single infraction possible, or the context of every situation requiring mod action. Likewise it's not possible to assign a standard punishment for any given (and at this point still imaginary) situation.

Moderators may choose to handle situations differently than one another, within the general provisions of the rules, based on their estimate of appropriate measures in light of the context of the infraction and (if applicable) the circumstances leading up to it.

The mods are not here to persecute posters. We are posters, and we have an excellent system of checks and balances in place - mutual respect. This includes all posters at Mellophant.

On Warnings and being placed in The Cage:

Mod Warnings, Banishment to The Cage and Banning. A long stay in The Cage will typically be the result of several Warnings. There may be occasions where it is used as the first measure if the offense is deemed extreme or as a simple and short cooling off period in a hot exchange, but in general a Mod Warning will precede The Cage. Banning is usually the last resort. Unlike in the case of banning, a The Cage restricted poster may still plead their case or interact with the board. An argument can continue in an appropriate forum. The user can and should be able to adjust and return to the board.

    The Private Forum

Lastly, we are going to be using a private forum for moderator discussion. We will use this forum to discuss board issues among ourselves so that we are better able to gain consensus among the mod staff with regard to interpretation of rules, executing housekeeping and providing better service to the Mellophant community.

Pit of Rage rules are slightly different from rules in the rest of the forum:

    * Don't be a jerk, especially, no death threats. Pretty much everything else goes, in here, although take direct linking to torrents and porn to PM, to limit legal liability and stop the site becoming blacklisted by censors.
    * Note: After consultation, the ban on hate speech and racism has been rescinded, as it was too broad and not well defined. Be a bigot at your own risk, though.
    * Things that are expressly allowed in the Pit of Rage: calling posters liars, calling posters trolls, abuse, swearing, mentioning snarkboards, discussion of porn, discussion of torrents, discussion of drugs, etc.
    * The settings have been changed so that search engine bots do not index this forum. So, flame away.

Protocol for requesting post changes for games.

The Mod team will be happy to help. Whoever is hosting the game and who is making the request needs to be as explicit as possible with their request. We need the following information:
    · A direct link to the specific game thread;
    · The number of the post that needs to be changed;
    · And the specific action that must be taken. For example, if a post needs to be deleted, say so. A short explanation as to why the change needs to be made is also a good idea.

Ideally, the request should come from the game host. If we get a message from another player, we will PM the game host to make sure it's OK.

Arts and Entertainment Guidelines: Please see the thread in the Guggenheim.

Guidelines for QA: Please see the thread in the Questions and Answers

General guidelines for The Crucible: Please see the thread in The Crucible

    Default FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Frequently Asked Questions

    mellophant.com

    What did Domebo mean?
Domebo was started as a spinoff of the Straight Dope Message Boards. Originally, the name was a contraction of DOper MEssage BOard. Apparently, Domebo is also a mammoth kill site in Oklahoma, and a Spanish surname. As people have now joined the site who were never members of the Straight Dope, the use of DoMeBo is deprecated in favour of Domebo. However Domebo ran into several technical issues and was reborn in vBulletin as Mellophant.com.

Terminology or Acronyms you might see

ETA: Is Edited to Add, used by posters to indicated they added something after preview or and edit. Of course it also has a common meaning in context of Estimate Time of Arrival.

    TLDR: Too Long, Didn't Read.

IMO or IMHO: In My Opinion or In MY Humble Opinion.

    Posting

    How do I Quote someone?
Every theme has a quote button or link

How do I Quote multiple people at once?
The multi-quote tool looks like this in our primary board style. You can select a lot of these and then when you click Reply they are all quoted.

    What is considered Fair Use?
It is still copyright infringement to lift whole blocks to text, regardless of whether you provide proper citation. Basically, you can use anything that is considered "fair use"--a good rule of thumb is 10% of the source itself. That covers all form of media. So, if there is an article that is 1000 words, you can use 100 words of it and still be okay. Anything over that, however, and it is no longer within the realm of fair use, and it's just out-right stealing. That also means if you want to post a clip of a movie for discussion purposes, you legally can, if you only post a small portion. So a total run time of 10 minutes for a move 100 minutes long is fair.

How do I Post an image?
This varies by browser and style. You click the IMG button and get a pop-up to just paste the link to the where the image is hosted. In Black Pearl you need to code it manually. The format is simply [ img ]http: // imgelocation.com[ /img ]. (no spaces in the tags of course.)
Maximum width of an image file in postings. 1024
Maximum height of an image file in postings. 768

Why Can't I post an image?
To minimize trolling we have a small limit where members cannot use the IMG tags until they have 5 posts.

How do I Post a link?
Very similar to IMG. It is a pop-up tool.

How do I post a YouTube link?
If you have the URL of a video:
After the v= is the code for that specific video.
    So you'll do [ youtube ] luW4f2glk0Q [ /youtube ] minus all of those spaces.

    Can anyone start a poll?
All Regular Members can, the handful restricted to the Cage cannot.

How do I upload an Avatar?
    1) Choose picture you wish to use as an avatar, and copy it, lest you alter the original.
    2) Open the copy with MS Photo Editor, Irfanview, Photoshop, or whatever editing program you like.
    3) Resize and crop the image until it meets the size limitations posted. (Currently 100x100)
    4) Goto the User Control Panel ...

    Site administration

    Who are the staff?

    Administrators and/or Technical Staff:
    admin
    Zuul
    elmwood
    What Exit?
    CatInASuit

    Moderators:
    NAF1138
    Allwalker
    pepperlandgirl
    Sarahfeena

How do I become a moderator?
Please send a PM to Zuul to let her know you are interested.

    What is a forum leader
A forum leader is an active member willing to take on minor mod duties for a specific forum. They can release moderated posts (Ask the Expert Forum) edit posts and threads and few other small things within their assigned forum. They cannot Cage people or assign infractions. They cannot move threads. Maybe split a hijack to new thread and just generally try to keep an eye on things and let the mod staff know when there is a problem or changes that need to be made. Mainly they take an ownership in a forum to promote it and keep it moving. This is mainly a sub-forum and special forum situation.

How do I get an article on the front page?
If you have an article you would like to get on the front page, please PM, Pepperlandgirl and Zuul. If you see a thread that might be good for the front page please PM Pepperlandgirl and Zuul.

Default Chat FAQ NEEDS MASSIVE REWRITE

What is that list of names over there on the right, and why does it differ from the "Who is online" list on the index page?
The online list for chat shows those members who have the chat window or the index page open (or who have recently had one of those windows open). The online list shows those members who have been anywhere on the board within the last 15 minutes.

What do those dots next to the names signify?
The colored dots reflect the level of a user's current activity in chat.

What do the colors mean and what happens if the dots change color?
A green dot means you are currently chatting and your chat window should refresh every 7 seconds. If you do not chat for three minutes, your dot will turn yellow and the refresh rate for the window will drop to 30 seconds. After 10 minutes, your dot will turn red and the refresh rate will drop to 10 minutes. This means there could have been a large amount of conversation happening, but you won't see it until the window refreshes.

Sometimes I have seen people just post one period. Are they making a snarky commentary on the conversation?
No, they just want to keep their window active and don't have anything in particular to add. You can also hit refresh, but you will lose most of the chat history.

How do I bold things /use italics /make quotes, etc. in chat?
You will need to insert the tags manually, i.e. {b}{/b}, {i}{/i}, {quote}{/quote} (using square brackets).

How do I insert images, and what is the guideline for them?
You can insert an image by pasting a link to it in between image tags ( {img}{/img} but with square brackets). Images over 1024x768 in size will not post. All images need to be safe for work. Not safe for work images will be deleted by the mods and the poster may receive a warning and/or be temporarily restricted to Room 101.

What's the rule on language in chat, and what do I do if I see something questionable?
Here is the section of the Domebo rules regarding chat.

I love the board, but hate the chat! What can I do?
You can use this link to a Domebo in which chat does not exist.

I love the chat, but don't love the board, or I want chat open in a separate window.
You can use this link (it's also at the top of every page) to access a chat window that is separated from the board index.

How can I turn off the images?
Individuals can turn off images by going to their User CP -> Board Preferences -> Display Options and changing 'Display Images Within Posts' to No. It turns off images in chat as well as across the board.

Sometimes people disappear from the list on the right, but they stay in the conversation. What's with that?
It seems to be a bug in the chat code. If it happens to you and you want your green dot to appear, you'll have to refresh the page.

How do I reduce the amount of space the Date and time use in the chat display?
Go to the User Control Panel -> Board Preferences -> Edit global settings and change the My Date Format to Custom and try a setting like Md G:i:s for Month Day hh:mm:ss like this Jun27 18:20:50

How can I see the number of posts in chat?
If you scroll to the bottom of the chat window, you will see a number. In prosilver it is a grey on blue. This is the total chat posts. In Maxthon it is green on grey and easy to read and see. It is missing from Subsilver and ProDark.

How can I see the top chat posters?
Domebo chat stats (updated top 40 chatters) You can change the trailing number in the address to see more or less posters.

Why doesn't pressing enter in the text entry field submit my message sometimes?
The chat code periodically refreshes the portion of the window with the chat messages in it (e.g. every 7 seconds to start). When it's making the request to the server to do the refresh, there is a small spinning animation that is shown at the bottom. While this is happening, you can't submit a new message, so your enter key will be ignored. Just wait for the refresh animation to disappear and then hit enter again.
