Default Anyone else tired of "All depression, all the time" news?

Seriously, I can't watch CNN or any news channel, or watch a news broadcast for more than a couple of minutes without hearing doom-and-gloom news about the economy, It's not that I don't want to hear about it, but when I've been trying to sell a house for more than four months with no interested buyers, I really don't need to be reminded of the sad state of the economy ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME.

Me. I swear to God the current economic mess is made about a thousand times worse by all the fear mongering on TV news.

Yes, but they always show a duckling that was adopted by a cat, or another equally heartwarming story at the end, so come on, that's gotta be worth something?

Of course it is. The economy is never going to start to recover until people stop believing that worse is to come and gain confidence.

As someone who is not at all an economics expert, it seems painfully obvious that people being told the economy is bad = people afraid and unwilling to spend and invest = less revenue across the board = people getting laid off as a result = people not spending and investing now because they have no job. It's just a downward spiral, isn't it?

I'm an NPR junkie. It's about a two-and-a-half-hour drive to work, and two or more hours on the way home. That's a long time to listen to gloom and doom every day. It really sucks the pleasure out of the non-gloomy stories they broadcast.

I've taken to tuning into KEXP as soon as it's within range. It's a great college station that's local, but has listeners all over the world on the Internet. I love listening to the new bands, and even their thrice-yearly pledge drives are entertaining. It sure helps to take the edge off.

Count me in as another who finds that the media's ongoing litany about the recession/depression has turned it into a really tiresome term. I know we can't stick our heads in the sand, but a couple of nights ago our local TV news were very thoughtful in showing us soup kitchens in the U.S. and folks standing in long queues in winter cold. No positive news, just that. Really great for our economic confidence.

When I'm surrounded by bad news, I tend to go looking for and holding onto any bit of positive news about improvement I can get -- whether it's progress reports about a close relative in intensive care, or an economic decline. The media's making it tough to do that for the latter case, but I'll still keep on trying.

I'm tired of hearing about it, and I haven't heard a lot about it. I don't stay up on current events like I should, but at the same time, I keep hearing enough to make me sick of it.

Especially when it's about getting a job for the summer. *sigh*

Oh, and I'm sick to death of the term "credit crunch". I swear I hear it at least once every damn day.

Between that and "Is Rush Limbaugh the de facto head of the Republican Party," you have to realize that the talking heads who have to talk for an hour a day have about 39.5 of their 50 minutes per day covered.

They bring in a Democratic strategist to point out that people are running scared of Rush.

They bring in a Republican strategist to point out that the Republicans recently got castrated, so it's natural for them to lack balls just now.

They play some clips from CPAC or his radio show.

And then they do the "Ooooh we'll never trust the economy again!" story, which they change thus depending on if the market is up a lot, up a little, down a little or down a lot:

Up a lot: "Do people really trust that the economy is going to get better this year?"

Up a little: "Are people being tentative today as they just don't trust that the economy is going to get better this year?"

Down a little: "Are people waking up a little and realizing that despite everything the government has done, they don't trust that the economy is going to get better this year?"

Down a lot: "WRPUTHJLK!!#!%HWRLKHJSBLKJHSBKJLH JKLE$H@KL$%H!K`1```~!!11!11!!11 JIMCRAMER WHAT DO WE DOOOOOOOOO?"
