Default Nazril Irham jailed for home made sex tapes

In Indonesia, highly popular pop star Nazril "Ariel" Irham has been jailed for 3 ½ years for having created 2 home made sex tapes which were released.

He claimed they were made in the privacy of his own home, then they were stolen and released without his knowledge. The judge decided he had done nothing to prevent their release.

There is currently an anti-porn bill against such actions and he was held accountable as his fans may try to copy his actions.

    More on the story here.

"I have three daughters," said Kurnia Maryati, a 33-year-old pharmacist, as she straightened out her headscarf.

"To me, pornography is even more dangerous than drugs. Just think of the school boys watching those videos," she said. "Next thing you know, they'll be imagining their female teachers naked!"
Honey, I've got news for you. Boys are picturing that anyway.

The law is wrong and I worry about all three of the people involved, but I just have to say that it really is incredibly stupid for a celebrity to make sex videos in a country where pornography is illegal. He should be able to do whatever he likes in the privacy of his own home, but that doesn't make it any less a risk.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

As it appears that the woman quoted was part of a mob condemning Nazril, you can probably take her comments at face value. However, it would be completely in keeping with Javanese culture for her to make that comment knowing full well that most people would immediately have the same thought you did.

    Really? Why is that?

This is a pretty depressing story. Aside from the jail time, I really wonder what kind of impact on their lives this will end up having. Careers completely ruined all around?

Javanese are very indirect. Confrontation is a no-no, and people lose face for openly showing emotions or making definitive statements. But if someone were to say "porn is bad because it will cause boys to think of sex", you might want to look very closely for the lump caused by the tongue in speaker's cheek. There is more than one way to get a point across, after all, and the Javanese are masters of irony and facetiousness. (Although as I said, in this specific instance I suspect the woman was NOT intending anything subtle.)

The jail time is depressing, but careers are being made, not ruined. The "Peterporn" scandal, as it is known here, is being greatly enjoyed by the populace. However, the porn law of 2008 on which the conviction is based does worry people for far more serious reasons. A lot of artists and musicians are quite concerned that it could be used to inhibit artistic expression, even some interpretations of classic subjects like the Ramayana, which is a frequent inspiration for dance, music and shadow puppetry. So far there do not seem to be successful instances of the law being used to clamp down on artistic expression, but the threat is there at all times.

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. None of that would be even implied from the article.
