    Default Long John Silvers

    Who didn't see this coming?

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Yum-pu...51127.html?x=0

I always thought LJS was a strange, semi-obscure brand, and tossing it into the Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut mix seemed bizarre.

I have seen the odd KFC/LJS outlet, as well as other 2 and 3 brand combos pop up, but can't imagine that Silver's is a big inducement to most folks.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, there's actually a few of them in my area, I suppose playing to the stereotype(?) that the Black community loves fried food. Problem is, there are a lot of places around that serve GOOD fried food, so I've been surprised they have had so much staying power.

Long John Silvers is probably the worst of the fast food chains. They are or were more popular in the south though. I use to joke that they deep fried everything, even the cole slaw.

I remember A&W stands more fondly. Much like Stewarts and just as inconsistent in quality from place to place.

I have never in all my life eaten at a Long John Silver's. But I have many fond memories of A&W. They had good hot dogs in addition to the root beer.

    So, anyone want in?

I bet if we all chip in, we can raise the $500 necessary to pickup the Long John Silver's brand.

I am actually a little sad that Yum! watered down the once-cool A&W brand as they did.

I do think that the sham architecture and over-simplified logo work make these dual-and three-pot stores feel like amusement-park food courts more than real restaurants.

There is a Long John Silver's in Singapore. What will happen to it, I wonder?

Any chain that foists malt vinegar off as a primary condiment is doomed to eternal obscurity.

I dunno, I have a BIL that adores Long John Silver's. This must be dark news for him.

Heh. It was only after moving away from Maryland that I realized that not everyone eats malt vinegar on their french fries.

I did not know this. I'm not good with it, but now I know.

Question: Has anyone eaten at one of these A&W Yum! combo stores? What's the A&W part like?

    Do they serve malt-vinegar burgers?

I have never in my life had a hush puppy. I wasn't even entirely sure what one was until fairly recently. I also had my very first funnel cake a few years ago when I went to Disney World with Marsilia.

Fried foods never really entered into my life in a big way. For a while there, my mom was feeding us a fruitarian diet.

Hush puppies are like fruit. They're ... round. And plant-based.

They are, truly, magnificent. Given how much LJS fries suck, I am bonus amazed by how good the puppies are.

Please note: I used to make hush puppes at LJS. Worked there for seven very long months.
