I see this is a pro-pie community. Very good.

We are pro-pie, but we are also tolerant of pro-cake views here.

Tough choice, but I'd say cake wins if it's high quality. Pie would beat cake out of a box, though.

Pie for the main, cake for the dessert.

    I'm bi-pastry.

Good point. Pie can be a meal. It doesn't have to be just for dessert!

I don't want cake on my birthday, even. I've had Birthday Pie the last couple of years!

I vastly prefer pie, but only fruit pies...I really don't care much at all for cream pies of any kind. For TG, my sister is making an apple pie in addition to the traditional pumpkin, just for me.

I prefer cake, if I have to have either. I actually don't care for either, and would rather have ice cream and/or a cookie.

Cake or death? And now I'll go vote.

I think the versatility of pie is what wins out over cake. Pie seems less occasional. Cake seems only appropriate for special moments (birthdays, weddings, any other gathering of two or more people) After dinner pie? Of course. Morning pie? Hey why not. Middle of the day pie? There's still pie?! Dinner pie? Well, there's savory pies like chicken pot pie. And while there is many types of cake, I think the pie has such a wide variety of flavors and styles, there's always going to be a pie for you. Hell, you could make most things into pie form. Throw some mashed beans into that crust, bake that up and BAM! Bean pie.

    I rest my case.

    You can't frost pie.

    I rest my case.

That's my master plan. To make outrageous claims in hopes my avatar distracts from my lack of actual thought put into my posts.

Spock's naked torso has something to tell me about cake and pie, but I can't figure out what it is!

    Beef cake?

Pepper is correct: pie has no frosting. There is no contest. A good quiche does have its merits, though. And there is lemon meringue pie....

I still say warm choc chip cookies, slightly gooey topped with ice cream. YMMV.

Hey! Pie is easier than cake, precisely because it has no frosting. You don't even have to wait for it to cool off before eating it. Mmm...warm pie fresh from the oven! ::drools:: Ice cream with fruit pie, and whipped cream with pumpkin and banana cream. Yummmmm!

If it turns out well, you're really in for a treat. Fresh, homemade pecan pie as soon as it's cool enough to eat without burning your mouth is utterly heavenly. My sister is making two of them for our dinner together tomorrow, because she knows she'll need that many just to get a slice.

I am now having my Thanksgiving pecan pie and it is glorious. Nothing in creation has ever been so perfect.

I'm OK with cakes, as long as they act pie-like in public.

See, the icing is actually a negative for me. It's the annoying, cloying, way-too-sweet crap I have to scrape off my cake. (And if it's a store-bought cake, it tends to be the kind of icing that leaves a greasy coating on the roof of your mouth.) Whereas pie crust, even mediocre pie crust, is a fine thing.

Seriously, y'all, a good pecan pie is so good that the first bite just might make you cry a little. Flaky crust, sweet base, the slight saltiness and toothiness of the pecans. It's beautiful.
