Inspired by RabbitMage saying "I enjoy pot, but I can't stand stoners." What are hobbies or interests you enjoy, but dislike the culture around them?

For me, it's the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). You know, stuff like the UFC. I've loved the sport for years, and I've enjoyed watching it evolve from a bush league of unskilled meathead brawlers windmilling their arms at each other, into a serious sport.

But any time I'm in a public place (e.g. Buffalo Wild Wings) watching an event, it's inevitably full of loser wannabe tough guys in hideous Tapout and Affliction t-shirts, and it's a better than even bet there's going to be a fight in the parking lot afterwards. It's why I tend to order the events I really want to see at home on pay-per-view.

Oh there's lots of things for me, and MMA is one (considering I got into a bar fight at the last PPV with some of those assorted douchebags) but since that one is covered, allow me to begin.

I enjoy heavy metal. I cannot abide by bands like Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, or Linkin Park. Pretenders, all.

I enjoy guns. A lot. I hate the standard "gun culture" to such a degree that words will fail me to express it correctly. I hate fat rich white racist tea-bagger morons that make up the majority of gun culture.

I enjoy punk rock. I cannot stand punk rock.

I enjoy cooking, I cannot stand Williams Sonoma. Turning art into edifice is a grave sin and so is the worship of costly cooking implements that serve no better purpose than to be costly and to sit unused in a gallery of a galley.

I enjoy poker, but I really dislike only ever getting to play Texas Hold 'Em. It's not poker, it's just money. The cards take a back seat to the betting and it ruins the game of playing cards.

This is a great one. I love metal, and I can't stand a lot of metalheads.

It was actually worse in high school in the late 80s; I loved Slayer and Megadeth and Celtic Frost, and pretty much everyone else at my school who liked them had mullets, wore denim jackets that reeked of smoke, and were just kind of destructive and self-destructive and misogynistic and dumb. I dislike most new metal (to say nothing of nu metal), but at least it's partially overcome the "hesher" metal culture that made Beavis and Butthead relevant.

Yeah. Like metal, I refer back to high school for this, only in this case I was the problem; I was the pretentious little wannabe punk rocker who couldn't admit to his friends that he liked Metallica.

And Pink Floyd is one of those bands that's so idiosyncratic, and have released so damn much material, that their fans can often be of the obsessive type. I've known guys who didn't listen to much but Pink Floyd.

I tend to avoid the word "fan" for that very reason. Fandom is not generally a laid back kind of place.
