    Default ST:TOS: Amok Time S2/E1

A new season, a new start. The Enterprise and her topnotch crew are still on their 5 year mission and have settled into functioning as a well-oiled machine. Kirk, Our Hero and Illustrious Captain, knows he can totally rely on the cool-headed logic and formidable scientific knowledge of his First Office, Mr Spock.

But wait... There is trouble brewing on the lovely lady. What's this? Spock raising his voice? Throwing things? Making demands? Dr McCoy has expressed his concerns to Our Hero, but was poo-poo'ed until Kirk witnesses an egregious display. According to McCoy, Spock must return to Vulcan or die.

To complicate matters, the Enterprise's presence is required at a diplomatic launch--direct orders from Starfleet. Kirk is put in a difficult position: help his dying friend or kill his career?

The threads of this show (one of my all time favorites) are woven so well together that it is sheer pleasure to just watch it unfold.

Anything you all would change? Anything that stands out?

For me, one of my favorite moments is in the turbolift. Spock compliments Bones on figuring out Spock's problem. Of course, we all know McCoy did no such thing--Kirk told him all about it. The expressions that flit across Kellye's face are masterful. And I truly love the comrade-in-arms moments there as well. "I would be honored, sir." Gets me right here....

It is one of the best, I doubt many would leave it off their top 10.

In no specific order, Tribbles, Amok Time,The City on the Edge of Forever, Doomsday Machine come to mind immediately for me. It is not as well done but I love Piece of the Action and would put that in my top 10 too.

I am behind on Star Trek right now and need to catch up again. I'll try to watch Operation Annihilate tonight.

Another favorite of mine: the dialogue between Spock and T'Pring near the end.

    Spock:"T'Pring, explain."

    T'Pring:"Specify."

And then her whole brutally logical conniving comes out. Wonderful character for an actress, especially at that time.

ALL of the major characters in this plot do such good jobs, not a one of them puts a foot wrong or hits a wrong note. Fantastic--we learn so much about the dynamics between the Big Three, as well as what life in space must be like and how treachery and subterfuge can take different forms. (not at the treachery etc, but at the excellence of the episode).

Hey, it's Operation Annihilate! with an exclamation point! Don't you dare forget the exclamation point!!!!!

Amok Time is yet another of the truly brilliant episodes in the series. We learn a ton about Vulcan culture and... biology. Some outstanding character interaction stuff. Great supporting roles. The best fight music EVAR. Just a damn solid show.

P.S. I found and purchased a talking Kirk bobble-head this weekend. How awesome am I?
    Hell is other people.

Says you. I have it on good authority that Jimbo likes nerdy girls.

I can bobble heads with the best of 'em. Step aside.

Yes, but is he married to featherlou?

If so, she's not bobbling his head often enough! I could show her how it's done...

I love, love, love the expression Kirk gets on his face when he is handed the lirpa. It's such a subtle, humorous touch. Shatner was so good at being Kirk. <sigh>

feather--you can have your pirate. I have Captain Kirk-what more could a girl want? (dreamy eyed smiley)

Why bless your heart.... Let me know when it's sharp enough, kay?

I had one of the worst days at work, ever. I need a Kirk hug. And a Spock one, too.

A hug from Spock? That would be highly illogical.

I finally caught up. The episode is as great as I recall and is summed up by "JIM!".

Spock would be GREAT at giving me a hug. He's not autistic, he's Vulcan! I'd have to listen to a lecture probably during and after about human emotions and the wastefulness and pointlessness of them, but he'd hug me. Or else I'd strangle him with his own lirpa! Ha!

Ah, shit. I just googled lirpa--all this time I thought it was that damned canvas ropey thing, so naturally I was laughing at featherlou re her (his?) sharpening of it. Now I look a fool. Good thing that doesn't happen often....

Now you have me thinking of Sheldon of Big Bang Theory.
