Default Watching 18/R Rated Videos in Public?

Travelling home I noticed someone had their laptop out, with a large display and was watching Drive Angry on it in full view of anyone who could have been standing behind him. Apart from being a dire Nicholas Cage movie, it is also 18 rated in the UK, R rated in the USA for violence and graphic sex.

He had headphones in, so you could not hear any of the film, but what he was watching was fairly obvious. It was his laptop, so he can watch pretty much what he likes on it, but should he have shown some concern at least and not watch an 18 rated film in the middle of the day?

So, should he have been watching it? Is watching something in this way still a private matter or, if anyone can see the screen, does it become a public showing of the material and should there be any limits to viewing in this manner?

I can't see why or how he should be restricted. It's his laptop. Just because the screen is visible doesn't mean he's forcing other people to look at it.

It's tacky as hell, but shouldn't be against any sort of law. If I were standing with my children within view of his screen, I'd either move or direct them not to watch.

Yeah, I don't see any way to control such things, but all the same it would annoy me if I had to take any kind of great lengths to keep my kids from seeing something inappropriate because someone was watching it on public transportation.

I remember a Drive-In Theater on the NJ Turnpike that was visible from the highway and showed R-rated fare in the 70s. That was sort of funny as a kid. So a laptop is small potatoes compared to that. I wouldn't imagine it would take much effort to shield kids from a laptop.

    Distasteful but not illegal.

Not that it matters, I suppose, but was this on a bus, a plane, a ship, an airport terminal...?

What sort of weirdo would watch porn in public though?

It happened on a train. The person in question had their laptop on the table in front of them.

Same kind of wierdo who would watch a Nic Cage film in public.

I dunno. A vaguely graphic film is a different ahem ball game to a full fledged porno.

Germany's largest tabloid newspaper typically has a topless woman on the front page for everyone in the train to see. I find it a little weird, but nobody seems to complain.

Same goes in Britain with the Page 3 Girl in the Sun. It's almost become part of the landscape.

Yeah but we all know Germans are perverts. Discuss.

Given the choice, I'd rather have them be perverts than militarists (not to say it's been a conscious national choice since 1945).

Since I got my Ipad and PressReader, I've been funning around with papers from all over the world.

My goodness, you don't want to be reading "Sunday Sport" in public. Or is that OK in Britain?

No-one ever read the Sunday Sport for the stories.
