Folca: Deor’s really well trained Red Tailed Hawk. He is often invisible.
Baygir: The very good Heavy War Horse of Thoroncir.
Cúran: A very swift and well-trained horse of the Elves, Gil-Gandel’s mount.
Kali: A fine Silver Grey Mare of exception stock. Her lines trace back to Shadowfax. She is Gilraen’s mount.
Missy: The strange green eyed, white fur cat, companion of Gilraen. It will not talk to Ghân but seems very intelligent and dutiful to Gilraen. She is an excellent night guard and usually invisible now thanks to Deor. She is apparently a descendent of Mirëgol’s ancient cat Warrior.
Freyja: A Wildcat with Mulligan that is from Ered Lithui. She speaks occasionally.
Leofwin Paladin’s War Horse of Ceol.
Hound The Wolf: Animal Friend of Drindoleth, raised from a pup. Her mother was a wolf and sire a warg but she inherited her size from the warg side and more so. The young pup drank Ent draught on several occasions and grew to a great size, a size to perhaps rival Draugluin though not Carcharoth. Larger than even Huan of lore.

Cwenhild Shield Maiden of Manwë & Varda with a long mane of blonde tresses. She is a brave and fierce fighter. It is said she fights harder then any man in an effort to prove herself. She is more adept at fighting the undead as the leader of her small order. Varda Star Kindler lends particular favor to those brave enough to stand against the darkness. Rohirrim Paladin of 8th level.

Top Sgt Mandor – Man of Minas Tirith - leads 19 mounted soldiers skilled in logistics and camp engineers. All are on fast horses.

Lorliana is a woman of 24 and was raised in the Minas Tirith and has studied for 12 years with the Loremasters. She has a few small magics at her disposal. She studied Elven lore at Rivendell and made a deep study of Kkósal. She is a fairly pretty blond, probably part Rohirrim and part Gondorian but not Dunedain. She is Lawful Good. She is 5'5". Her 2 brothers and some others call her Lorli.
In her own words: "My father was a scribe and my mother was scribe and they wanted me to have a better education than they got so they trained me well and taught me to love and respect knowledge and when I was 13 the House of Lore excepted me as a student. I was very proud and I enjoy it very much. Now I am trying to bring back more learning and more history of the Dúnedain and where better than Imladris itself? I might have studied to be a Mage but I had spent my whole life studying to be a Sage. I don't think there are any woman wizards or even apprentices anyway."
She has a few items that help her research including a magic pen and she has actually picked up a few cantrips thanks to Deor's good start and further learning at Rivendell.

Some background, it is 65 years since the Bearers of the Three Rings left Middle-earth for the Uttermost West and 66 since Sauron and Barad-Dûr fell.

King Elessar & Queen Arwen are in their prime and young Prince Eldarion is in his early training at age 21. There is still a constant struggle to tame the brown lands, Umbar, Harad, Nurn and the North. The court summers in Evedim near the lake and spend 9 months in Minas Tirith. Aragorn has campaign more often than not in the last 65 years, but far less than the prior 67. He and Arwen have had 4 daughters. Silmariën (FA45), Gilraen (FA47), Telperiën (FA51) & Fíriel (FA55)

Legolas has removed a small number of his people to Ithilien to support Prince Faramir in this fair land. He visits the courts of Faramir, Elessar, Éomer and Gimli son of Gloin often. His beautiful sister Elenwë is adventuring and rides a Minaras (Unicorn)

Faramir and Éowyn have two sons: Elboron (FA3) & Caramir (FA7). Both are hardy Warriors. They say that Prince Elboron has the look of his father and Caramir of his mother’s people. Prince Caramir is a great Horseman and loves his visits to his Uncle. Both appear to take strongly after Faramir as they are aging slowly. It has been noted that Éowyn has remained very youthful for all her long years. She could be taken for Éomer’s daughter or even granddaughter rather than his sister. She looks to be in her 50s more than her late 80s. Some wonder if this was a gift of King Elessar’s healing or a reward for slaying the Witch King of Angmar. Faramir is of course still a hale and hardy man. A little over a hundred he too looks to be in his 50s.

Currently Minas Tirith and their allies are fighting a two front war in the South and a Campaign wiping out orc lairs in Ered Lithui and around Nurn. Gondor is expanding and trying to build up a large force of horseman to supplement the Riders of Rohan. They are building a great road to Rhûn to create trade and build an alliance. They also hope to increase trade to Erebor & Dale. There is a project underway at a slower pace to improve travel along the Anduin. It is expected to take decades. Dark tidings arrived out of Rhûn brought by Hodwain the Beorning Bard. There is apparently unrest and some organized evil activity out near the Sea and beyond.

Dol Amroth is still the great Principality of Gondor. It is under the wise care of Prince Elphir (TA2987), son of Prince Imrahil of course. Sister to Lothíriel the Queen of Rohan. His eldest son Alphros (TA3017) is the Commodore of the Gondor Fleet and commands the great and swift flagship the Amroth.

King Éomer has passed away leaving the behind his widow, Queen Lothiriel of Dol Amroth. King Elfwine, his eldest now leads in all things. He is seeking the hand of Silmariën. Elfwine is a tall man of 6' 5" with blond hair and piercing blue eyes. His features show a bit of elvish influence of his mother's side. He speaks with a deep voice and looks to be no more than 30 years old but he is probably 50. He uses a long sword and Gwaelur knows that Elfwine was given a fine chain mail shirt as a gift from Gimli. The Chief Mearas likes the new King, his best son is Prince Elfwine's partner. They think he is a very good human. Prince Éomund is the next in line currently. He is a few years younger than Elfwine and also still single. He is leading a large force of Riders of Rohan on behalf of his brother the King to aid King Elessar in Harad.

In 61 Samwise Gamgee left Middle-earth via Mithlond. Merry and Pippin got their affairs in order and headed south to live in Gondor. Mulligan Took was among their escort. Samwise’s eldest Grandson Elfstan Fairbairn joined the group after visiting Minas Tirith. Faramir Took son of Pippin is the Thain and the Shire’s greatest Warrior since Meriadoc the Magnificent. Mulligan’s Brother Ponto Took is an excellent archer and a good treasure finder.

Arnor is repopulating as is the Anduin Valley. The Shire’s population is growing and their produce is helping to feed the North and even the South. They have steady wains heading to and from the Dwarves of Ered Luin. They are even supplying produce and pipe weed to the Grey Havens in exchange for salted & smoked fish.

Elladan and Elrohir of course remain the Masters of Rivendell and assist in the running of Arnor. They in no way have finished with hunting Orcs. Indeed, they have driven the Goblins far underground with their constant attacks on Goblin Gate and often roam north against Angmar itself. Elladan, Elrohir and Glorfindel seem tireless these days in hunting the scattered remains of these ancient enemies to the North. They often leave the care of Rivendell to the wise Celeborn. He did leave a thriving Sindarin kingdom in Southern Greenwood from where Gil-Gandel most recently hailed.

Thorin III Stonehelm rules the Durin Folk (Khazad). He rules from Erebor of course. His lords include Gimli in Aglarond, Lord Gíon of the Iron Hill and some lesser lords in the Blue Mountains and Fornost. The Dwarves are again thinking of Khazad-dûm. Dori and Bofur are still alive, but quite venerable and rich. Bofur is acting as the ambassador to Rivendell and Arnor as needed.

A bridge at Tharbad has been built and the great bridge is nearly rebuilt. Tharbad is already a thriving and growing town under the command of Lord Mayor Ianthír (Bridge Lord). He is Ranger of the North and the son of Aragorn's most loyal friend Halbarad. The population is mostly just men of Eriador. There are small Dwarven and Hobbit communities.

The Great South road is rebuilt and maintained from Fornost to Minas Tirith. All the additional trade has brought much prosperity to Bree and the town and the Prancing Pony have both expanded. Fornost is still small, but growing. Most of the remaining Northern Dúnedain have moved near Fornost. It is 1000 miles from Bree to Minas Tirith and good roads the whole way now and a network of Inns and King’s Inns allowing for better accommodations then in any time in the last 2000 years. Bree to Thrabad is 200 miles. Tharbad to Gap of Rohan is 325. Gap of Rohan to Edoras is 125and Edoras to Minas Tirith is 350.

July 30 of FA65 The party assembles in Pippin's dining room as a large and private location for a meeting.

Lorliana has this to say when all are assembled though first she checks her notes:

“I wish to open with this, ‘Collectively you are a power for good. Beware Kkósal, once he was amongst us but he dreaded death too greatly and fell under Sauron’s influence. His gift for talking helped sway many others to the Dark Lord. Now each of you now enter and take these hidden relics, fight the shadow and bring home the family. So did Lady Vanimeldë prepare for this day.’ This is what Thoroncir and Gilraen reported that day 2 years ago.”

She pauses and then continues, “I have spent those years researching in Rivendell, at the wholesome house of Lady Vanimeldë Kanotir and back here in Minas Tirith. The Lady Kanotir did indeed seem to have an advisor and friend that was a Wose who spent at least 7 years at Aerdolan Kanotir on Amontari. While he was there another would be wizard visited with them for a chance to exchange knowledge and learn from them. Something happened though and he fled the house. I believe I have found enough information to say the following.”

“As we already were fairly sure of, Kkósal could not have been one of the Nine. It sounds like he was a very old but yet hale man already in 1524 TA when this fort was still inhabited. Some thought he might already be over 200 years old then.”

“I am now certain Kkósal and the Mouth of Sauron are not one and the same. Before he went too far down the road of darkness and used foul sorceries to preserve his life, he spent time in the north and studied briefly at the House of Lady Vanimeldë. He was of Númenórean descent and noble in face but not in deeds sadly. It looks like he went to Carn Dum not long after that and then largely disappeared except for a mention that seems to be him in aiding the Black Númenóreans against Gondor. By this time he was looking very drawn and nearly skeletal. The Mouth of Sauron on the other hand was still apparently human in appearance at the Gates unless he was using some powerful Glamour but surely Gandalf and Aragorn at least would have seen through it.”

“It was that shrewd guess by Thoroncir that set me down the right path; though he was not right in his guesses. It appears Kkósal was a dark sorcerer that had headed east and continued to work for Sauron. Without his master he has found ways to be strong. I also found that we have no knowledge of what happened to the Mouth of Sauron. That is we don’t know what happened to him as the Gates of Mordor collapsed but it appears he may have fled east and is causing grief again. I found enough information from our friends in the East, Hodwain and others that the one once known as the Mouth of Sauron now styles himself as the High Priest of Sauron and is working with a seemingly undead horror that fits well with the little I have found on Kkósal.”

“Now the part of this story that has me immediately worried, I think Kkósal has left the Mouth of Sauron behind to look after their interests in the East and Kkósal is now working quietly back in the West. Some happenings have occurred in Dol Guldor, Minas Morgul and by reports from Glorfindel in Carn Dûm and elsewhere in Angmar that I think indicated he is actively collecting something of the Witch King’s that Captain Meriadoc and Princess Éowyn did slay. I strongly suspect he will next move on the Barrow Downs between the Shire and Bree. There is some foul item that has aided the barrow wights is my guess that Kkósal wants for himself.”

“Oh, Glorfindel will be trying to get information from the orcs of Gundabad if Kkósal has been there. I would suspect he has. It was Glorfindel that led an assault this year against Carn Dûm in May and found there was an outside force that had recently been working with them. This raid included Gilraen’s uncles, Elladan and Elrohir and 48 other Elves of note and 32 Rangers of the North, Bjorn the high Druid and Bero the Lord of the Beornings with 130 of his people, Rorimac’s father Captain Meriadoc and the rest of his party, Mulligan’s cousin the Thain Faramir with 100 Hobbit archers, 33 Dwarves of Erebor and perhaps of greatest note, apparently Beorn himself assisted them. He led a large number of bears with him. They then met up with a large army from the north and swept out most of the remaining towns and haunts of the plains of Angmar. Gundabad is largely isolated now as both the Goblin Coal Town in the north and Mt. Nor near Angorn Woods have been routed and indeed Coal Town is collapsed, flooded or on fire. City of Courl was again cleared and in all likelihood broken this time. Mt. Gram to the south and Krand remain clear. ”

“Should the party be willing to take on the Barrow Downs I advise you seek help and remember this, the curse is great on the items under the wights guard. No one should take more than one item of the accumulated hoards and all the items should be scattered to try and break the dark spells. This is not a case of disrespecting the dead but clearing the land of evil ancient and deadly. One item at least should be most foul and this one must be destroyed. Perhaps Rivendell will have the answer to its destruction of perhaps the magic of your mages and druids. There are no clues or hints as to what this talisman might be though. But we know it is not one of the Rings of Power at least. The item in question if discovered should only be carried by the purest of heart. I am not sure exactly what this means but I am thinking you might need to enlist the aid of a member of the Order of Paladins. It is also possible an Elf of the Light could do the job or perhaps from what we know of the Ring Bearers, a Hobbit might be up to the job.”

“If I am right about Kkósal he is very capable of fleeing confrontation if needed, it seems he can enter the wraith world leaving behind his physical belonging but still preventing his destruction. I doubt Gilraen can do more than briefly chase him away. It looks like he has taken the dark studies deeper than any save perhaps the Witch King himself and now he hopes to exceed his skill with the aid of doing it as a free agent. Even if this horror is not Kkósal he appears to be a great threat to the free people though hopefully not an immediate one. But I think he is the one we were challenged to stop.”

She has brought back a gift from Rivendell for Gilraen, “Master Elrohir has sent this for use.” It is the Crest of the House of Aerdolan Kanotir on a pennant: A sword and a plow crossed over a horse. There is a unicorn fighting a small dragon in the upper right corner and a small grove of trees in the lower left. “He said not why just asked me to deliver it unto you.”

Elf I am, but neither I nor my kind ever saw the Light of the Trees, and although Bombadil could handle the One Ring itself at no harm to himself, I deem this was inherent in his very nature and not something he could teach to me were I five times the student I am. Still, at least this small but potent blade I bear may prove its worth ere long. I pity the Barrow-wights rather than hate them: the trap they have made for their own souls is not one to be wished on the most dreadful foe, and the best service we can do for them is to despatch them beyond the circles of the world where, perhaps, they may find the peace that is the proper lot of Men. And if they are become that which cannot find such peace - well, then we do them no disservice by consigning them to oblivion.

We shall do what we can. From what I know of the periain - which is little - it might be that someone of the seed of Master Samwise would be the best to choose, for he withstood the sorest temptation on the borders of the Dark Land itself and was ever steadfast in his duty. Still, that is not a decision we need make here and now. *smiles* Go not to the Elves for advice...

Mulligan sighs at Gil-Gandel's comment. "Much as I would like to go adventuring with Elfstan again, his heart is not in it, it belongs to the Shire. Besides, I think he has already played his part in this quest and what travails remain will be faced by Rorimac instead."

There is a quiet gulp from the corner as Rorimac nervously fingers the hilt of the sword around his waist.

"Yes, Rorimac, you are carrying HIS Bane, but we will be alongside you all the way." Mulligan pats him on the shoulder affectionately.

"Well said, Gil-Gandel. I gladly take up this quest, to bring the wights to a final peace. I do not have any good counsel to give on allies to bring with us, but I will trust the judgment of you, my good friends, on this. I pray that Eonwë will lend strength to me, and to all of us."

Elfstan may stay where his heart is, for all of me; did we not fight a war so that all who would might live in peace at home? We have volunteers enough for the task, and no need for pressed men. Rorimac or Ceol, we can decide nearer the time; both are stout of heart and pure of intent, at least as such matters as these run - which is not, I promise you, to damn with faint praise.

Speech is good and intention better, but neither is aught without action, and we had better ready ourselves for a journey. Rorimac, since you are now become a Ranger of no small standing, would it please you to order our expedition to the North?

As Rorimac considers his response, Captain Sir Thoroncir bows and says, "I perforce will go where I am bade, for the glory of Gondor and the favor of my gracious lady. I would again welcome the wise minds, strong arms and brave companionship of you all. If we seek additional allies, though, I believe we should look to the Elves, as I have heard that the evil which dwells in the Barrow-downs holds little terror for them."

The Sea-knight looks over Gilraen's uncle's banner with great interest. He is eager to begin a new adventure.

Lorliana looks around, "Are you then willing to go to the Barrow Downs and try to stop Kkósal? I am willing to go as far as Bree with your party if you like to continue to advise along the way in any small way I can and be nearby to aid in identifying the item that Kkósal seeks. There are few here at Minas Tirith that are more skilled and prepared for this fight then those assembled here, oddly enough I wish Meriadoc Brandybuck, Rorimac esteemed father was here and willing to help but it seems appropriate that you Rorimac, his son would work to foil this threat. The King himself is another, but he cannot fight all battles or be in all places at once. Perhaps some of the Elves of Ithilien may be willing to help but they will probably have their own concerns and give some vague advice only in the end. Of all of Gilraen's order none are more powerful against undead and those of the House of Healing are always spread far too thin sadly. Ceol's order of the Knights of Eonwë may be able to provide some help well suited to fighting the ghostly foes though they have but little protection against the magic that I believe Kkósal can bring. You're best hope for help would be to enlist the aid of one like Glorfindel but he seems to be focused on the north in Angmar and Gundabad and is probably already involved in a campaign he leads. There is some small chance of gaining help back at Rivendell, but I am not sure if there is actually enough time. Though when they choose the Elves of the Hunt led by Turgil can ride as swiftly as your friend Gil-Gandel. They are most skilled at fighting those restless spirits of the enemy. But if they are away, the trip to Rivendell may be for naught. Perhaps at Bree we might find aid or at least some few to escort me on to Fornost to look for help for you. We could also perhaps bring a small troop of riders with us from here not to fight the wights but to go on to Fornost."

I believe that such as we are, we should try to do all we can. It is not an Elvish saying but one that I heard elsewhere that I believe is most appropriate: Waste no more time seeking the help of legendary heroes. Become one. Was the Ringbearer himself anything more than a retiring country gentleman ere he became the salvation of the Free Peoples?

Of course the mightiest aid East of the Sea dwells hard by the Barrow-Downs: Iarwain ben-Adar himself. But it is not so much that he has power over the creatures of Darkness as that they have none over him; and he has done much - and far more than his wont - even in accepting me as his pupil. It is not his way to exert himself directly, but perhaps it would avail me to visit him again as we pass by, for I have learned much since he last taught me and he may deem me wise enough to be entrusted with some charm of particular virtue against the wights. With or without, I believe we should make the attempt and trust to the Valar and the One who oversees all our fates.

Lorliana responds, "Gil-Gandel, that is brilliant, I believe you may learn more from Iarwain ben-Adar or Tom Bombadil as the Hobbits and the men of Bree know him to hold off the wights then anything I could learn between Rivendell and Minas Tirith. You could ride on to visit him while we rest a day at the Prancing Pony once we get there and meet us back on the road before we turn to the old barrows."


Gilraen speaks up, "I am willing to go and if the party decides I should I shall ask by brother to arrange for a fast escort to help us on the way. Lorliana research has impressed me. I will also check with my order for aid, in either another healer or at least lore that may help."

Pippin yawns, coughs and says, "Wait, what now was that about old Tom?"

Thain-Emeritus, I mean to visit him, for as you well know, he is daunted less by the Barrow-Wights than any other creature in all the world. I fear only that, being only a Child of Iluvatar (and what Bombadil is none of the Wise can say) I may be unable to profit from his teaching, but it costs nothing to make the attempt and it will be a joy to see the Eldest Of All again.

"Ah, oh good, those wights were scary enough to freeze the bones. Tom can handle most anything though. Angela, come here, I have something for you then." Pippin shows a small gold pin in the shape of a leaf and says, "This came from the Great Lady of the Woods and Gandalf did a charm over it on the great road as we were heading for the Shire. He said it would protect me from the spells of the wights should I ever make the mistake of wandering there again. I'm not sure exactly what it does but you are welcome to it, I have little use for such things now. I would offer you my sword, but I gave it to Faramir along with my armor just recently. I'm too old for such things now. I do wish Merry would return soon, he was always the best to share a smoke with."

"If we head north by way of Rohan, we can, certainly, see if any of my order would be willing to accompany us on this quest. As the lady Lorliana notes, as Men, we may lack the Elves' resistance to Kkósal's magic, but our training and our devotion to Eonwë does give us some knowledge, and we do not fear such a challenge. I would also note that, in the months in which our party was separated, I have trained my fellow knights of what I learned fighting the undead in the South."

Thoroncir grins at Gilraen, delighted to have her say for all to hear that she will be coming along, too. He says, "I would not be averse to another visit to Tom Bombadil, ere we face the ancient horrors of the Barrow-downs. It could not hurt, and very likely would do some good."

"I have only heard tales of a Tom Bombadil, which I had assumed to be of the sort of stories told by mothers to their children. It sounds like he is a real being, and that some of you have met him? And, Gil-Gandel, you have studied with him?"

I have - and it may be that he is more real than any of us. :)

"Thank you Uncle". Mulligan accepts the Gold leaf and pins it to the front of her shirt, before giving him a hug.

Rorimac has a wistful look in his eyes.

"The Barrow Downs are only a few days ride from Buckland, but I have never been there. Sneaking into the Old Forest with a couple of friends was as far as it got and then only just to see what it was like.

Bree would be the best place to make a base, its close and the Prancing Pony really does serve excellent beer, thank Gandalf. Some in the area might even have ventured onto the Downs in search of treasure and may be able to help. As for Tom Bombadil, I believe you will find him if he wants to be found and not before."

Gil-Gandel, while I appreciate your trust in me, unlike another, I am just a ranger. The only leading I do is guiding people from one place to another. The trickiest part will be getting in and out before all the invitations turn up in Bree for everyone to come and stay in the Shire."

"By all means, let's visit with Old Tom before we venture into the Downs. Any advice he can give us will surely be valuable. Likewise, using Bree as a base of operations makes good sense to me; surely the lively manner of the town will be a welcome respite after the cold and lifeless Downs.

Bitur agrees with the plan of making Bree our base of operations

Let us ready ourselves for a trip to Bree then. Put most of us in a loose bunch together, where the knights can keep their eyes on the spellcasters and Mulligan. Rory can go on ahead and I will bring up the rear as over most going I can catch up very easily while putting myself on the best flank for action. If Hound is willing to accompany Rorimac then so much the better for spotting trouble before we walk into it, and if Folca will go aloft at intervals that will help all the more. Drindoleth, are you willing to scout from the air at times?

I have not visited the Prancing Pony. Ale is not my usual drink but if Gandalf's seven-year blessing has truly originated a noble tradition then I will gladly sample it when we get there.

Pippin speaks up once more, "That ale was good even before the blessing. The Butterbars had a good skill at brewing indeed and gain more as the years passed."


I'm going to assume Drindoleth is good with this.

Gilraen makes arrangements for an escort of 20 mounted soldiers skilled in logistics and camp engineers. Additionally there will be additional horses picked up in Rohan to speed us on the way.

Lorliana, "Do you wish me to go along? Do you have any other questions?"

"Speaking only for myself," the Sea-knight captain says, "you would be most welcome to come along, Lorliana. And I will vouch that the ale at the Prancing Pony would please the tongue of the most discriminating Elf."

Then I shall be sure to sing its praises - and bless the house where events of such destiny took place, and see what fruit sprang from Barliman the thrice worthy and beloved. Lorliana, I look forward to your company for you are plainly a lover of lore and we will doubtless have much to talk about on our way.

Sir Thoroncir, would you oversee these soldiers of our escort? Liaise with their officer or sergeant; I look forward to the luxury of properly-engineered camps by the way :)

"So, heading for Bree it is. One question, do we take the same road as last time or something slightly less interesting in terms of adventure?" asks Mulligan

Thoroncir bows a little to Gil-Gandel. "I shall duly inquire."

Who commands the cavalry and camp engineers? I presume Thoroncir would hold authority over him, but maybe not.

Top Sgt Mandor leads the group under Capt Thoroncir for Princess Gilraen, house of Telcontar. Note none are actually cavalry.

He first approaches with a deep bow, "Hail your Highness."

Then when she acknowledges he continues, "I have the honor to lead a detached escort to Bree with 3 dispatch bags. We will use the King's road north making use of the King's Inns when possible but as per your wishes of course. We were told to look to Captain Thoroncir for leadership and advise him on camp prep when inns are not an option. We are honored to be chosen for this escort duty and all use fast horses and spares. We are honored to serve with heroes of the realm and informed that no less then Meriadoc the Magnificent’s son Rorimac Brandybuck is to be considered the second officer if he is willing to accept service as a detached lieutenant to the Rightful King of Arnor and it's great Province the Shire."

"We expect the run to Bree to be peaceful and swift. I understand we are to coordinate with your spell casters to ensure safe camps, particularly the Beorning Druid Drindoleth and Elven Bard Gil-Gandel. We hope Bitur son of Bofur will check our preparations and make suggestions to improve our technique. We look forward greatly to a safe trip north to Bree."

The party could be ready to depart August 1st of FA65.
Total trip is 1000 miles as Minas Tirith to Edoras is 350 & to Gap of Rohan is 125 & to Tharbad is 325 & to Bree is 200
The party can probably complete the trip in 20 days of travel as light war horse speed. (24”) Bitur and both Hobbits would need rides though.
At Pony speeds (15”) it will take 30 days instead.

Wow. 70 miles per day would give the Pony Express serious competition.

Cúran can easily manage a hobbit as well as myself, for I ride light, but a Dwarf in full gear is another matter and we had better rely on one of the magnificent steeds of Rohan for Bitur.

Sergeant Mandor, thank you. Generally for camp-grounds we shall prefer light cover where we can easily see and not be seen, and where the woodland magics that Drindoleth and I know (but chiefly Drindoleth!) may be of use. Since my Cúran can easily keep pace and even a little to spare, I shall arrange that Rorimac and I will scout ahead for a suitable location towards the end of each day's journey.

Bitur will happily assist the Sergeant with any preperations that need to be made for the trip.

Top Sgt Mandor is thankful for the support and starts talking shop with Bitur in particular. He seems to recognize a fellow veteran campaigner and natural NCO.

As we will be traveling with a large number of horses, Ceol will offer his expertise with horses to Sgt. Mandor, to assist in the care and handling of our "herd" during the journey.

I was going to use the archaic spelling "serjeant," but the modern spelling seems to have taken root. No matter.

Thoroncir introduces himself to Top Sgt. Mandor, and explains that Gil-Gandel is the overall commander of our party. The Sea-knight captain asks Mandor about each of his men before meeting them, too. He assembles them, carries out an informal inspection and says, "Thank you for your service to the Princess and the rest of this party. I look forward to working with you to ensure a safe passage for all. I know each of you can be depended upon to do your duty for the King and his realm."

Bitur will share tales with the Sergeant of his adventures both before and after traveling with Gil-Gandel's band. He will also inquire as to whether or not the Sergeant has ever been involved in a siege.

"Nothing compares with being besieged when it comes to proving one's mettle. Open battle becomes almost automatic for veterans such as us. Years of training and experience hone your skills to the point where it's all second nature. But a siege, that's something entirely different. You are surrounded and pent in--rendered largely powerless. The enemy will take you out as soon as you leave the protection of your fortress. But no matter how many stores and provisions you have, you can't hold out indefinitely. The enemy doesn't have to attack you, they just have to be patient until you run out of supplies or go stir-crazy. It's not something I would ever wish on a friend to experience, but I can't say in the end I regret having to go through it."

Mandor and another older vet starting telling tales of the sieges they were part of. Mandor remember the siege of Gorthny Mountain when he was still a lad. We had these rebels locked down hard with over a thousand Riders of the Mark for support as this was in their land. But the Rohirrim are not great at breaking sieges and got some help from the King. So we are building fortifications, traps and tunnels for 2 weeks when Gimli leads a 100 Dwarves of Aglarond up and blasts open the Tower Fort at Gorthny in no time flat. It was amazing. You're people are unmatched in engineering that is for sure.

Another time, my company was down in Umbar and we were making good time sapping their curtain wall and then I heard this odd rumble. "What could that be?" I said. A fellow, name of Ban said, "Sounds almost like water running underground." I realized quick as you can that the defenders must have a huge water reserve and were trying to drown us. "Out men, Out!" We ran like a Ring Wraith was after us and with no more then a minute to spare our tunnels were flooded out. But that was OK, we waited a day and went back to work on the now soft soil and built a huge fire up under their wall and it came tumbling down by nightfall. They surrendered at that point.

Ban was a good man, caught an orc spear in Nurn though. He had to retire. He's a farmer on the Ithilien side of Osgiliath now.

August 8th of FA65.
The party makes good time to Edoras and hope to swap out most of the spare horses. The road is very well traveled at this time of year and busier then any recall seeing it. From Minas Tirith to the Bridge at Firien woods the King's Inns are all complete. The town looks prosperous and as Ceol & Deor know, it is. Doer is not sure if Theogrim has returned for the south yet.

The Golden Hall of Meduseld is shining in brilliant sunshine on top of the hill on which Edoras is built. King Elfwine sends an invitation to the party to stay the night at the new guest lodge and to dine with himself and the Queen. It is clear this is a polite command to Deor and Ceol though.


Based on inquiries made it is determined that Gwaelur is back home at Aglarond. Lorliana thinks a party member should try to either get him to join in or trade of his helm Rilthol for use in the party against Kkósal. He was a part of the prophesy and Rilthol had many abilities.

Rilthol the Helm of Brilliance is an ancient helm made by the Dwarves of Belegost it will aid a brave Dwarf with +2 Protection, gives saves vs. Undead drains as Paralysis (no bonus); Fire Resistance: +4 Saves, -2HP/die, (at least 1). Enhances Dwarven abilities and vision. Will light up for up to 1hr like a torch. Once per day will Light Blast doing 6d6 damage to undead in 30’r. Recharge requires a 2nd level Light spell or 8 hrs in sunlight.

He also had a wand of light so he could recharge the helm himself.

Lorliana suggests, "Gil-Gandel could ride ahead and probably persuade him to join us or Drindoleth could fly there very quickly and try to convince him. What do our leaders say?"




Just a few notes:
1) If the party recruits him, I will play Gwaelur as an NPC unless NAF1138 finds time to play again.

2) Between Minas Tirith and the Firien Bridge they run every 15 miles. Between the bridge and Edoras, Rohan has wooden inns that are privately run every 10 miles. But every 50 or so they have a well made stone inn similiar to the King's Inns. For Edoras to the Gap of Rohan they are still under construction but there is one never more then 20 miles apart.

The King’s Inns run every 15 miles from the south of Tharbad north to Fornost. Additionally between Bree and Weathertop they are spaced every 12 miles.

Many are still under construction though and eventually they will go south to Rohan and Isengard and East all the way to the River Running.

I think Gwaelur will not take much persuading. I'll gladly go and see him myself - it will be good to catch up on each other's news.

While on the journey, Rorimac is still considering the offer before him to take service in the army of Arnor. It takes his mind off the journey, but he is of a mind to take the option. Though he may speak with his father first.

Mulligan just enjoys the journey, although things have changed. Sometimes, home is home.

Good luck, Gil-Gandel. It'll be nice to adventure with my old friend again. I doubt you'll need any help convincing him, but let him know that I'd personally appreciate it if he joins us.

Besides, we need more dwarfs in this band anyway.

Ceol views the "request" from the King and Queen as an honor, rather than an order. Along with his cousin Deor, Ceol gladly leads his friends to Meduseld for the dinner with his liege.

He is certainly in favor of recruiting any assistance from Gwaelur that might be had.

Thoroncir is glad to see Edoras again, and looks forward to the feast. He is sure that Gilraen will do her parents proud before the royal family of Rohan.

While visting Edoras, Rorimac will ask Thoroncir and Ceol, "Given what we are about to face, Ceol, would it be possibly to ask for more assistance from your order in facing down the Barrow Wights and the evil we are likely to face there? Certainly while we wait for Gil-Gandel and Gwaelur to meet us. I have no doubt that Gil-Gandel could do the journey quicker than any, but I don't believe Gwaelur will be quite so fast. "

"That was my thought, as well, Rorimac. I will start by asking my superiors in my éored, but it is a topic which I may also broach to King Elfwine, if our conversation with him goes well."

Drindoleth will try to keep track of Gil-Gandel and then the party can make arrangement to meet Gwaelur and Gil-Gandel closer to Aglarond to keep from losing time.

The day goes quickly and the party freshens up and joins the King and Queen in repast. It is an excellent meal with lamb, beef and pork served and a variety of vegetable dishes. There is even plenty of Pipe-weed, Longbottom Leaf, Old Toby, Southern Star and Garden Tower. King Elfwine seems happy with the conversation and engages both Hobbits especially in talking about the Shire and Pipe-weed. He discovers that Angelica Took has spent some time recently with the other Princesses and asks many questions about them but always returning to Silmariën and who she danced with at the Ball and any other tidbits Angelica is willing and able to share.

He had seen Deor very recently but does have some word for him. "Your brother Theogrim is doing well, he took injury in battle in the south but has healed and is returning by ship and should be home for a time before the winter. He has done proud by family and the Mark."

This looks to be a good time for Ceol or others to ask for help.

Unless there is assigned seating, Thoroncir will try to sit next to the lissome Gilraen, and will see that she is well-fed and well-entertained. At the appropriate time, he rises and proposes a toast: "To the King and the people of Rohan, horsemen without equal and Gondor's truest friends!"

During the dinner, when the topic of the party's upcoming mission comes up, Ceol will address King Elfwine.

"My liege, we are headed to the Barrow-Downs, which lie to the east of the Shire. We have learned that a foul dark sorcerer who once served Sauron, by the name of Kkósal, seeks some talisman of power which may lie buried in the Downs. It is our goal to deprive him of this item, and to destroy it, if at all possible. We also seek to do what we can to bring the undead who still slumber in the Barrow-Downs to their final rest."

"Knowing that we will need to face these undead, as well as Kkósal himself, I humbly ask if there are any of my fellow Knights who are particularly strong of heart, and might accompany us on this quest, by your leave."

The King thinks it over for a bit and then says, "I will put out the word to the 3 orders of Holy Knights asking for a volunteer to assist you. I think we'll have many to choose from in the end."

He gives toast back to Gondor and Arnor.


The word goes out before dinner is complete of the quest the party is on, by the next morning before the party is ready to leave, 3 brave knight ride up:

Ethelwine of Oromë. An older man in Dwarven plate mail mounted on a marvelous horse. He appears armed with long spear and long sword and a spiked buckler. He is an expert horseman and hunter with a little tracking ability and is skilled especially in hunting the signs of the undead, but the wights are probably not too hard to locate come to think of it.

Cwenhild Shield Maiden of Manwë & Varda. A warrior in the mold of Éowyn herself. She might be 30. She is tall standing 5 feet and 11 inches with a long mane of blonde tresses. She is dressed in chain mail and blue clothes beneath. She carries bow, lance and swords. Ceol knows she is brave and a fierce fighter. It is said she fights harder then any man in an effort to prove herself. She is more adept at fighting the undead as the leader of her small order. Varda Star Kindler lends particular favor to those brave enough to stand against the darkness.

Wilfrid is the third and is a fellow Knight of Eönwë. He is a near match for Ceol. Ceol knows him the best.

Meanwhile Gil-Gandel will soon reach Algarond and when there has no problems being allowed in to see Gwaelur. Gwaelur seems hesitant to leave as he is studying in the armoury. What does Gil-Gandel say to him? Lorliana seemed to feel the Helm at least is vital but maybe not the person. One way or the other Gil-Gandel should plan to meet the party on the way to the Gap of Rohan.

Thoroncir greets the three. "Hail, knights of Rohan! I am Thoroncir, a knight-errant of Gondor. Thank you for your willingness to serve. Please tell us why you wish to go in harm's way to the Barrow-downs."

Might all three come with us, or are we expected to choose one or two?

Deor is heartened to hear that his brother Theogrim is doing well enough in the South; the injury doesn't worry him because he knows that Theogrim would be proud to have taken it in the service of the King and the Mark. He's likewise happy to dine again with the King and Queen-- though he sees them frequently enough as the Wizard of the Mark, it's nice to see them as guests, instead of his usual more official visits. He'll make a point of asking Lorliana to sit with him at dinner, and show her (and any others who wish to see it) his recently expanded tower. The gardens do get a little wild with no one to tend them, but in some ways they're all the prettier for it.

Deor has no strong opinions about the knights who have presented themselves; all seem rather capable and reliable. Ethelwine might be slightly less suited; as noted, we're unlikely to have trouble finding the wights, and we do have our own tracker.

Angelica is happy to give Elfwine details and such on the princesses.

As for the three knights, tracking the wights is not likely to be a problem, fighting them off is. But if they are going to be fighting them, it would be preferable to have someone cool in combat and not always looking to prove themselves. Oh, and be able to take orders from Thoroncir and Gil-Gandel.

Ceol knows based on Angelica's criteria Ethelwine would be the biggest problem though he might be the best overall knight. He is used to leading and is just below the rank of a Marshall.

Wilfred will be the least problem but is the least of the 3 knights.

Cwenhild is probably the best suited to fighting the wights. She could possibly be convinced that as a part of proving herself she would need to follow the orders of the party leaders.

As far as numbers, it was expected the party would pick one but probably they could ask for the boon of two.


One of Deor's young cousins offers to keep the grounds of the tower neat for but a gold piece per month.

(Sunspots ate my post): Gil-Gandel doesn't hasten to the point but gives Gwaelur all the news of our adventures since we saw him last. Then on to the business of the Barrow-Wights - though we would value Gwaelur's company and strong right arm, we also accept that his present work is important to him, to others, and possibly to many who are yet to come. Nevertheless it seems that the Helm's destiny is bound up with our present business and it would be well to have it at our disposal, with Gwaelur (which would greatly gladden me) or without him. However, history teaches many lessons and Gil-Gandel accepts without quarrel or question that it is for Gwaelur to do with his own as he sees fit, and that if we can have neither Gwaelur nor the Helm then by the Valar's good grace all will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well. As for Gil-Gandel himself, his blessing goes wherever goes Gwaelur, of all the sons of Durin by no means the unworthiest.

Does Gil-Gandel put forth his Bardic Charm to help persuade Gwaelur?

Ceol bows as he thanks King Elfwine. "You are most gracious, your majesty."

"Well met, my shield-sister, and shield-brothers. I echo the words of my friend, Sir Thoroncir -- we are honored by your offer of service. As a fellow Knight of the Mark, I am certain that all of you would acquit yourselves with great valor and skill on our quest. Wilfred...of course, I know you quite well, as we have trained and served together often. Cwenhild and Ethelwine, I know you more by your reputations -- which are beyond reproach. Please do tell us a bit about your thoughts on accompanying us?"

Thoroncir will listen attentively to whatever the three knights have to say.

Ethelwine proclaims, "They called for the brave to aid in a heroic quest. I claim the honor of my order to offer my services in your quest. "

Cwenhild, "The missive we were sent called for those to fight evil wights in the north. I have sworn to fight the undead and protect others from them. Let us ride."

Wilfrid, "The King called, I am senior of our order that was near and available and thus I came to offer my help. I am not especially skilled at fighting in barrows but more then willing to help."

Gil-Gandel will rely purely on the force of his arguments and personality to persuade Gwaelur to join us, and not supplement it with any bardic charm. No good enterprise, Gil-Gandel feels, is well begun by coercing a friend, even with the gentle coercion of a charm.

Rorimac listens to the three responses and inwardly groans at the first two. One claiming an honour when there should be no need to do so, one determined to fight the undead by the sounds of it at all costs, and one who will probably do all he can to help out to the best of his abilities even if not as good as the others.

His mind also drifts to the commission again, and wonder if this is how officers are supposed to act, because it somehow doesn't feel natural. He take a deep breath, looks at them and asks,

"Would you be prepared to follow the orders I give and the path I lead, while we search for this menace?"

Waiting to see how they react to the though of a hobbit giving orders, Rorimac is aware Thoroncir is in charge, but everyone has wound up directing the party at some point for some reason and he wants to make sure that other members of the party are not discounted purely for not being an officer. Besides, at the moment, he does lead the party; admittedly as the tracker so he sets the path they follow.

Gwaelur thinks it over carefully and debates with himself for a bit and asks several questions, finally as he is convinced it is not himself vital to the quest but Rilthol he decides, "I cannot pull myself away from my work currently, it is a bad time for me. I have too many projects in the fire at once and another quest if you will pressing myself. I will give the helm over as a loan for use by my friend Bitur and I will even loan the Wand of Light I have as long as you agree it gets returned me fully charged. It has 96 charges currently of 100. I am sorry I cannot go but I hope fervently you have great success and all come out of this fine. Give my regards to all of our friends. Good luck and may the Valar guide you in your endeavor. Oh feel free to bring me back some small reward from the barrows if you will." He laughs with the last bit.

Wand of light that stores up to 100 light spells which can be used for 50 recharges of the helm. This wand is currently sitting at 96 charges.


Ethelwine again speaks first, "What? You? One of the little folk and little more then a child? Why would I need to take orders from you? My understanding was Captain Thoroncir was the officer duly appointed by our ally, Gondor and the direct representative of Princess Gilraen who of course I would do my best for. I also understand a wise Elven warrior is the nominal leader of your group and even the Princess defers to his great wisdom encompassing a long life that predates the Mark itself. But why would you be in charge before myself?"

Cwenhild might surprise with her answer, "If the King so directs me, I will follow your orders or whoever else I am asked to take commands from, but as you are a skilled ranger of the north and know far more of the land we go to and the threat we face, I would follow you directions regardless. Furthermore, as the son of Captain Meriadoc, greatest ally to my chosen Hero, I would of course willingly and happily follow your orders. I hope you will allow me to join your group. I truly hope for a chance to fight the undead and I can work with a party."

Wilfrid says a simple, "Aye, I will, I am but offering my services to your party."


I hope this is enough to decide. Keep in mind, Wilfrid is not as good against undead as Ceol and brings the least help to the party. He might even be a red shirt to some degree. Ethelwine is clearly a Holy Obnoxious High Born Knight^TM that loves himself a bit too much but is also very powerful and skilled. Cwenhild does specialize in fighting undead in particular though as you gathered, she might be a bit overanxious.

Each answer gets an understanding nod from Rorimac, even though the first set his teeth on edge.

However, the slightly surprising response from Cwenhild received a nod and then brought a slow, perhaps slightly embarrased, flush to his cheeks as she continued her answer.

Ceol thanks each of his fellow Knights of the Mark, in turn, for answering the call for volunteers. "I have no doubt that each of you would be a worthy addition to our party, would fight with honor and distinction, and do our homeland proud in your actions. Alas, we cannot bring all three of you with us. Each of you have particular strengths, and now my comrades and I must make a very challenging decision on which of you to select. I ask that, if you are not chosen, to please not think that we found you wanting in some way. Truly, we find ourselves with three great treasures from which to choose, which makes the decision all the harder."

A generous loan, Gwaelur, and if we make anything out of this expedition I shall see that you are not forgotten. May the Valar prosper your work and ours and may we share our news at more leisure next time. For now I cannot tarry over-long - we have many leagues before us. Farewell!

Thoroncir smiles a little at Rorimac's test of authority. He then says to the three knights of Rohan, "My friend Ceol has spoken true, and I would gladly echo what he said. Knights of Rohan, kindly withdraw, if you will, and excuse us while we discuss this and other matters. We will be in touch with you shortly."

When they have left - if they do - he will say to his companions, "It seems to me that Ethelwine thinks a bit too well of himself and is perhaps too proud to easily join our band. Despite his undoubted abilities, it might not be worth the trouble of having him along. I would favor inviting the other two to join us in our quest, though."

"I would agree with you, Thoroncir", replies Rorimac, "a pure heart is needed to help move the item when found, not a proud one. I'm sure all three of them can fight ably alongside us, but leadership and direction is not something we lack. Cwenhild and Wilfrid, if they are both able to join us. If just the one, I believe Cwenhild would likely be of more assistance."

Gilraen concurs with Rorimac and quietly adds, "might be nice to have some more women around wouldn't it Angelica?"

Drindoleth is just curious, can the King spare two of his top Knights? Ceol can quickly verify this though and finds the answer is that 2 is fine especially if Ethelwine is not one of them as he is fairly senior in the military of the Mark and the others are not.

"I hate to point this out Gilraen, but I think her needlework involves pushing sharp pointy objects into things that scream and bleed, or if undead then things that just scream, and not creating a pretty pattern of a plant on some fabric. However, if you want a conversation on the best way to sew up a wound, I'm sure you can swap plenty of stories." responds Mulligan, "I'm just glad it wasn't Ethelwine. I'm not sure I would respond well to be continuously ordered around by him. Young hobbit girl, travelling along with the heroes, obviously there to cook and clean and so on."

With a laugh Gilraen says, "True, Mulligan, true, but still it looks like we'll be up to 4 women heading north. It feels refreshing somehow."

"Although it is hardly customary for such parties to have so many women," Thoroncir says, smiling, "I have no objection, and I think we will all be the better for it."

"I concur...I believe that both Cwenhild and Wilfrid will fit well, and be well-suited for our quest."

It sounds like enough of a consensus, you will present the decision to the 3 and the King?

"I concur with the party. Cwenhild and Wilfrid seem like they'd be good fits for the party, and Ethelwine, while a capable fighter, less so. If the King also needs Ethelwine to serve in his own army, I think our decision is made. Let's invite Cwenhild and Wilfrid to accompany us."

Bearing Rilthol and delighted to have been able to spend a few hours with his old friend, Gil-Gandel heads for the rendezvous at the best speed Cúran can manage. and that would give the Pony Express pause.

"I suggest we speak to the King first to secure his approval," Thoroncir says, "and then tell the three, each separately. I would not want Ethelwine to feel his honor had been besmirched, or that he had lost face, by being told of our decision in front of the others."

"Agreed, and I think you and Ceol are the perfect people to inform his Majesty and his knights to the outcome of our decision. Don't wait too long, otherwise Gil-Gandel wil be chiding us for tarrying overlong here."

"Yes...let us speak with the King as soon as we might, to receive his approval on recruiting both Cwenhild and Wilfrid. I agree, friend Thoroncir, we should speak to the three individually, about our decision. I do fear that Ethelwine may take the news poorly, but if presented by you, as the leader of our party, so designated by King Elessar, and by me, as a fellow Knight of the Mark, it may at least be seen as a military decision by him."

The King will see you now.

"Would you like to speak first, O noble Ceol, or shall I?" Thoroncir asks his Rohirric friend before they are shown into the King's presence. "As he is your liege, I am content to have you explain the party's decision, if you wish."

Ceol nods to Thoroncir. "I believe that makes sense, Thoroncir. I shall take the lead, but please feel free to add your thoughts."

When the group is shown in to King Elfwine, Ceol bows deeply. "Thank you, my liege, for this audience, and for the opportunity to consider three of our realm's finest knights to accompany us on our quest.

"After speaking with all three of them, we have no doubts that all of them would fight with distinction, and bring honor to themselves and to Rohan. The only real concern we had with any of them is that our group does not always follow a military chain of command, and many of us fear that Sir Ethelwine may struggle with that, if he were to join us.

"And, so, now, on behalf of our party, I ask another boon of you, your majesty. We all feel that both Cwenhild and Wilfrid would fit well with us, and bring valuable skills to our quest. By your leave, we would like to ask both of them to accompany us."

The King mulls it over and answers, "I think you choose wisely and leave me one of my best officer so I will not begrudge the aid of two Holy Knights. Good luck and may success follow you."

This should set the party up to leave shortly.

Mulligan and Rorimac are quite happy that the King has given his blessing and hope that Sir Ethelwine takes it well. And following that, leave by midday and get a good start heading for Bree.

Any last requests for the Rohan, make them now or wait a few months until we return.

Thoroncir clasps Ceol's shoulder as they leave the royal presence. "Well done, my friend. Just what needed to be said, in just the way it needed to be said. Now I will break the news to Ethelwine if you would like to speak to the other two, if that would suit you."

"Thank you, my liege. May we bring honor to you, and to Rohan, with our exploits." He bows again.

As the party departs their audience, Ceol thanks Thoroncir. "Your praise means much to me, my friend. You have far more experience than I in this sort of meeting. If you would like me to accompany you to speak with Ethelwine, I would be happy to do so. Otherwise, I will inform Cwenhild and Wilfrid, so they may make their preparations to depart."

Sir Thoroncir is thoughtful for a moment and then says, "If you are willing, yes, please come with me when I meet with Ethelwine. I suspect it will draw the sting, perhaps a little, for him to be told of our decision by one who is not of Rohan. But you are of course welcome to speak up if you wish."

When they have met with the proud knight, Thoroncir bows and says, "I again thank you, good sir knight, for your willingness to serve in our party. Any of you three would doubtless have been an asset to us, and in deciding who to bring we have carefully considered the path ahead of us, and the challenges we have yet to overcome, but also the needs of this fair kingdom, Gondor's friend and ally since time immemorial. Accordingly, it was the shared sense of the party that Cwenhild and Wilfrid ought to come with us, while we refrain from taking you away from your very important military duties for the Mark." He bows again. "I hope that this meets with your approval, as it already has with that of your lord the King."

Ethelwine looks a little surprised but then graciously replies, "I appreciate your careful consideration and it does make more sense to gain a pair to assist you and as you noted my own duties in Rohan are perhaps deeper. I wish you success in your blessed quest and that Oromë will guide your hands and horses."

In meeting with the other pair Wilfrid says simply, "Let us make ready to ride."

Cwenhild is quite excited and burbled, "Thank you, I shall do your quest proud and help to the best of my abilities."

The party is ready to ride and can depart after a good early lunch by 11am.

It is smooth riding the next few days and the 2 extra members begin comparing notes and learning the disposition of the watch and the marches. Top Sgt. Mandor has the camps running smoothly and working well with some practice runs with the Druid.

The roads remain fairly busy through the days though only rarely do riders overtake and pass the party. The party over take wagons and riders heading to the north. There are many wagons coming down from the south. Much is produce from the Shire led by a mix bag of Dwarves, Humans and Hobbits. In many cases it appears Rohan is buying goods from the Shire and selling much of their own produce to Minas Tirith. Hardier items like wheat and pipeweed though go directly to Gondor in many cases and the Dwarves also deal in finished craft items of course to both nations.

The party meets back up with Gil-Gandel without Gwaelur as the land grows more open and population light. The party will reach the Gap of Rohan by evening.

It is at this point I could use a watch list and basic riding order. You will probably want to ride 3-4 wide. Each of the squad have 2 horses as do some others of the party. There are 32 total from my count between 9 party members, Lorliana, Cwenhild and Wilfrid and the 20 man squad.

The Next morning will be August 11^th, FA65.

Rorimac is happy to take point for most days with one other and will also take Wilfred and Cwenhild out front if they want, to give them some ideas of the signalling that has been used for a little while between the group.

Mulligan is happy to remain looking as meek and innocent as always in the middle of the group.

Bitur will ride near the front, rear, or along an outside flank.

Gil-Gandel will drop in as rear guard, having both the mobility and range to help quickly should anything develop at the front and being well placed to swing out and flank any enemy that turns up.

On hearing of the debate and decision as to the paladins, Gil-Gandel adds "Good. It seems as though Ethelwine is an excellent officer, and since we have little need of one, he should stay where there is work for an officer to do. All parties are well served by this choice."

Rorimac suggests swapping Mulligan and Drindoleth in the watch list, if only for a slightly more even distribution of upfront capable fighters.

That and the fact Mulligan has been making comments about Rorimac finding his Dernhelm, the early start will do her good. :LOL:

Gilraen wonders, "Shouldn't Bitur be on a dark watch and Deor the Wizard on either 1st or last to have full sleep to recover his spells. Even the Hobbits are better at night then most of the men, though Missy will help out at darkest night."

Would it make sense to have the sharp-eyed and stealthy Mulligan at or closer to the front rank of the riding order?

Thoroncir, I can do well on much less sleep than Men. I will cover both middle watches, when my senses will be of most use. The ease that your mind finds in dreams, mine can find while my body is wide awake.

"I have no objection to switching places with Mulligan in the watch, assuming no one else has good reason not to take Rorimac's suggestion?"

Mulligan looks at the watch list, smiles and makes a mental note to give Thoroncir an extra rasher of bacon at breakfast.

That's OK, Mulligan - the breakfast cook has to be up early anyway.

All looks good to me. Ceol notes, with satisfaction, the heavy armor surrounding Princess Gilraen on almost all sides in our riding order.

Lorlianna brings up one problem, "Like Gilraen, should myself and Deor be in the middle of a 3 wide rank for protection. I believe we are both more likely to die from an ambush then Gilraen in fact."

"Not to mention 20 people managing to march in ranks of three is quite a feat", smiles Rorimac.

"Try this one instead."

Thoroncir's proposed watch list sounds just fine, and Deor will leave discussions of the marching order to those with the most tactical training.

"Well, as no-one has raised anything further about it", enquires Rorimac, "I guess that's our riding order then. Is it acceptable Sir Thoroncir?"

(There are some bosses who would wait for everyone else to do their best before butting in with a pitying smile and correcting everything for correcting's sake, but Gil-Gandel is not one of them)

"Thank you, Rorimac, for sharing your thoughts," Thoroncir says. "The road may not be wide enough to go four abreast, but if our Elf-captain has no objection, neither do I."

August 13^th, FA65. On the road north once past the Gap of Rohan: It is 325 miles to Tharbad now. It is a cloudy night with a thin waning moon in the sky partially obscured. It is very warm but a breeze is blowing to make it tolerable. Rorimac, Ceol and Gil-Gandel are on watch with 5 of the soldiers.

At 2am the party is alerted by the watch yelling out “Trolls!” as some rocks come flying in. The rocks fly in from 160 yards away and strike 3 horses and miss a fourth. Then a 5th misses the Guard, Danin, that yelled the warning.

Baygir the Sea Knights horse takes 18 of his 33 hp.
Deor’s Riding Horse is down hard, it took 16 and had only 12.
Leofwin the Paladin’s Horse takes 15 of his 45.
Cúran the elven horse danced out of the way with the warning and scrambles over near Gil-Gandel in case he is needed.

The party awakes quickly though many are without weapons of course.

If Thoroncir can don his armor in time to do some good, he will. Otherwise, he'll just pick up his sword and shield and join the battle-line. He's concerned about his horse but the good of the party comes first.

Stunned and shocked awake, Deor will force himself to his feet and summon up a Wall of Force, twenty feet long and reaching only five feet off the ground. He'll crouch behind it, drag Lorliana and any wounded to the relative safety, and shout to make it clear to his allies where the wall is.

Ceol, having already been awake and armored, will head with Thoroncir to establish a battle line. He will start out with his bow, if he has enough light to take a few shots at the trolls before they close to melee range.

"wassat, wassgoinon" blears Mulligan as she wakes up with a start. She vanishes and her bedroll rustles as she moves at speed towards the exit near Rorimac.

Looking across Rorimac curses under his breath at the interruption to the night, and looks round some more to see if there is anything else out there. With slightly better eyesight than the soldiers, he marks out to all where they trolls are.

Gil-Gandel restrains his ire at the party's seeming incompetence at camp-making and watch-keeping that has, yet again, allowed a party of wandering trolls to approach within rock-lobbing range before even being noticed. It is doubtless as well that we were not camping in hobbit-country or we would presumably have spotted nothing until we were robbed of all our valuables and awakening with slit throats, and he mentally composes an inspiring harangue for later on even as he mounts Cúran with fluid grace and prepares to lessen the odds.

To begin with he casts Mirror Image on himself. On closing the range to within 90 yards he follows with a Stunning Discord at T2 and T3, though they probably have more than 9 hit dice and so will be deafened for 1-4 rounds - or only stunned for 2-8 segments if they have more than 11 - if they fail their saves, then a blast on Glinras to give every ally within 150 yards +1 to hit & saves, and then start in earnest with Lindorn concentrating rapid fire on one troll at a time until it goes over.

His slumber interrupted, Bitur shakes off the grogginess and quickly grabs his axe and shield to join the others at the front. He laments that he doesn't have time to don his armor, but it wouldn't be the first time he's had to fight without it.

Lorliana scrambles to the protection that Deor has provided. She says, “This is a bad camp site it seems like, we had the same problem here last time.”

The guards in armor hurry up to Thoroncir and ask. “Do we advance or shelter here?”

The rest ready crossbow and drag their armor behind the wall of force in case there is time to don some.

Sgt Mandor barks, “What’s the order sir?”


Gilraen heads for the injured horses, she attends to Deor’s first and cures it 14 points. It is now down only 2.

Gil-Gandel makes out the location of the 4 trolls. Rorimac locates 2 of them that are moving in close and ready to pitch in a few more rocks.

As most of the party is still trying to get their bearings, Gil-Gandel is moving nearly invisibly towards the center foes, well actually it appears 4 Gil-Gandels are riding towards their foes.

"Shelter here for now, men, and put on your armor," Thoroncir orders after a quick look around. "Sergeant, keep lookouts around the entire perimeter of the camp, but mass our forces closest to the trolls. Be ready to advance when everyone is armored. Carry on!" He will continue to put on his own armor.

Wilfrid shouts back, "But their is no protection for the horses, we must sally or lose them." Then quieter, "Wait where is the Elfhorse? In fact where are the Elf and Hobbits?"

"Right here Wilfred, Mulligan's here as well. Gil-Gandel's providing a distraction."

He looks back quickly at the horses realising the danger Gilraen has put herself in. "Cwenhild, grab a shield, protect Gilraen" pointing in the direction of the horses.

"Thoroncir, we'll try and buy you some time. C'mon Mulligan, there are trolls waiting to be annoyed. Head for the closer ones readying the rocks." Mulligan flickers into view nearby and then flickers back out of view again as Rorimac draws his cloak close about him. The pair of them invisibly head as fast as they can towards the trolls to provide a little distraction giving the troops time to prepare.

While Rorimac concentrates on the enemies ahead judging the best distance to let fly with an arrow or two, Mulligan is keeping up a conversation in her head. "....yes, Heliox, it's me, you and a couple of smoke bombs. Yes, and you Freyja, as well. Please keep an eye on Gilraen, don't let her get squashed. Wow, thanks Heliox, being able to see Rorimac like this is useful, I bet he can't see me though, yes I did just whistle quietly to let him know where I am........."

Once Deor has set up his defensive wall, he'll slip on his Minor Ring of Power and line up a Fireball against T2 and T3. He'll expand the area of effect, and hope to knock them both out of the fight.

If I'm doing my math correctly, that's a 24th level fireball-- caster level 9, +3 ECL from the dragon figurine, and spell level doubled from the staff. Even if the doubling happens first, it's 21st level. Should hurt quite a bit.

Thoroncir frowns and says, "Wilfrid, the horses and the rest of the party will be best protected by a well-executed attack, which is not ready yet. But if you are prepared to do so now, lead those who are already armed and armored against the foe. I will assemble and prepare the balance of our forces, and lead them to your aid forthwith."

"Mulligan and Rorimac," he says before they slip away, "thank you for your help. Good luck!"

Ceol nods at Thoroncir's order to Wilfrid, and assesses how many meleers are ready to go now (and just how vulnerable the horses are). "If we have enough to make an initial attack now, I will go with Wilfrid."

Bitur will join Thoroncir behind the wall of force to both get his armor on and assist others in getting theirs on.

Another rock comes into camp and strikes one of the soldier's horses. It goes down quick. Sgt Mandor orders 2 of the watchmen, "Use a pair of horse to shield the Princess and yourselves. Move!"

Drindoleth will turn into a full size bear and head out. Ceol, Wilfrid and Cwenhild mount and go forth. Though Leofwin is injured.

Gil-Gandel has stunned the third troll. The second troll says, "Whass warang Walt?"

Heliox thinks back, "Aye."

Freyja thinks back, "Missy and I will do what we can."


Mulligan sends her smoke bomb at troll #4. A direct hit in the chest and smoke envelope the very large foe in a 10' radius though not quite down to its feet. This troll is very tall.

Rorimac sends 3 +4 Dwarven made arrows at this foe from a distance of 120 yards, 115 yards and 110 yards. The smoke is helping him more then it hinders him but the distance is great at night. He hits twice though for light damage compared to when he has a clear view. 25 points are done to troll #4.

Note: Rorimac should make arrangement to have Infravision cast every 5 days on him as he has that magical visor. It would help a lot here.

Glinras gives voice and then 4 +3 Dwarven steel arrows follow rapidly towards Troll #1. At short range, Gil-Gandel hits 3 times for 44 points. The troll screams in pain and heaves a rock at this horrible group of foes and is reward with crushing one. At least only 3 are left.


At this point, a huge fireball envelopes the pair of trolls in the center. Both trolls catch fire but Troll #2 drops to the ground extremely dead. Larry is still stunned and burning down 44 points from the fireball.

Troll #4 rushes out of the smoke cloud in the direction of the arrows.
Now closer more arrows go flying and a pair of +3 magic bullets. The Hobbits hit with 2 arrows for 42 and a bullet for 10 more but a stone clobbers Rorimac causing 25 points of damage. He realizes this is the biggest troll, and crud a female. They're extra mean. On the bright side it has to be hurting badly.

At the end of the round, a Giant bear bowls over the big troll with Hound at his back. The troll never recovers from this tackle.

Ceol comes riding in hard and fast and strikes Troll #1 in the neck with his Silver Long Sword. The troll is dead.

Cwenhild & Wilfrid are just a bit late but veer and turn after the final troll.

This last still being stunned and lit well by the flames is quickly dispatched.

Thoroncir, regretful that he did not have the chance to join the attack, will ensure that Gilraen is all right. He will then go speak in Horse to his wounded warhorse Baygir, calm the stallion, and assure him that help is on the way. He will also speak to the other horses, tell them that the trolls are defeated and calm them, too, if he can.

Mulligan retrieves the bullets and arrows using Heliox to highlight the magical items in the dark night.

Rorimac stops and feels his side and arm where he was hit, wincing slightly as he runs his fingers over a sore spot. He then turns and makes his way at a slow pace back to the camp.

Gil-Gandel reins in and surveys the scene with some satisfaction. The group are getting better at handling trolls! As the hubbub dies down he scans the surroundings with keen eyes and ears, alert for any other assailants that may not yet have shown themselves.

Gilraen is fine, she is frantically trying to attend to the badly injured horses. She looks up and says, "If the trolls are dead, call the Paladins back to help with the horses and try to sooth them with fair and calming words."

Mulligan finds her stones and Rorimac's arrows though she cannot retrieve those in the troll. The troll has no magic on other then Rori's arrows.

Gil-Gandel is right, this group dispatched these trolls far easier tonight then those of a few years ago and if anything these were larger yet. He hears nothing more moving about the area and heading a bit further out still hears nothing more.

"Well fought, all." Upon hearing the distressed horses back in camp, Ceol leads Wilfrid and Cwenhild back with speed. "We need to assist with the care of the steeds."

Thoroncir nods to Gilraen, and sends any nearby soldiers out to quickly bring back the paladins. He will continue talking to the horses and trying to calm them.

Bitur, realizing the battle is over before it even started for him observes:

"Great job everybody. Glad I was there to provide moral support, or something...."

Gil-Gandel completes his sweep, congratulates all present on efficiently dealing with this nuisance, and remarks that we may need to review our watchkeeping and campmaking. "For now it seems that this was merely a small group of wandering trolls after horsemeat - and any man-flesh they could pick up as an incidental - but let us not forget that, since we are in a hurry, the loss of a number of horses could have serious consequences."

Hearing of Bitur's wry comment, he laughs, in humour not mockery, and says "One does not bring prime-quality heavy infantry as a rapid reaction force, but as an effective hammer at the right time and place. When we have the work at white heat and squarely on the anvil, Bitur, we shall turn you loose - and we shall see smithwork."

Rorimac will wait until the horses have been calmed before asking for some assistance.

Seeing this, Mulligan goes and pesters either Gilraen or one of the Paladins to take a look at him, whoever is least occupied with the horses.

With the trolls down, Deor stands to his full height, whistles Folca down to his gloved fist, and locks eyes with her for a moment. He then casts her up into the night sky and closes his eyes as he sees through hers as she searches for any other enemies. If she finds none, he'll confirm that Lorliana is unhurt, then move quickly to ensure that his his horse is recovering.

Under the ministrations of the Healer, Druid and 3 Paladins, the horses and people recover quickly.

Folca sees no further trolls or anything large then one lone wolf hunting by itself about 2 miles north east of the party.

What else does the group do before settling back in for the night?

Thank you, Gil-Gandel. I really am proud to see that I am adventuring with such capable people and I thank you again for letting me adventure with you.

Ceol will take Cwenhild and Wilfrid aside for a few minutes, to discuss their experiences in the fight, and analyze tactical choices, in preparation for the next combat.

Does the wolf seem unusually large, or is it behaving at all abnormally? Would it be worthwhile for Folca to take a closer look?

Or maybe Drindoleth can speak to it, ask it if it knows of any unusual movement in the area.

Considering a large fireball went off lighting up the nearby area, we may get other visitors coming to visit. But if there is little around within a couple of miles, we should be ok.

The wolf is just a wolf and clearly hunting. Drindoleth will check on it anyway, feed it a Goodberry and heal it of some mange. It knew nothing about the trolls, but figures they must be passing through has he had not run across their scent.

The paladins both feel their actions were a little rash but the horses needed protection and so decided to take the risk.

Does the party settle back in for the night or do anything else?

Time to settle down. If something else happens, it happens. Rorimac will finish his watch, Mulilgan goes back to sleep. She could go and search the bodies, but that can wait until morning, if anyone really wants a troll corpse searched?

Ceol will reassure his fellow Rohirrim paladins. "Your instinct was sound. We were able to draw some of the trolls' attention from the camp, and save the horses and other members of our group from more injury from the boulders. My only caution would be to continue to make certain that you do not undertake such a sortie without sufficient back-up...and, of course, to have the approval of the party's leader. In this case, you did both of these things." He smiles. "Now, try to get back to sleep, if you can."

Ceol will finish out his turn on watch.

Bitur will go back to sleep and quips:

"Well, if four more trolls show up, just let me sleep. However, if five show up feel free to wake me."

Thoroncir, having assured himself that both Gilraen and Baygir are safe and comfortable, will remove his armor again and bed down until it's his watch.

Gil-Gandel unships his harp and helps the sleepers settle again, and the watchkeepers stay alert, at one and the same time.

August 14^th, FA65. Come dawn the trolls turn to stone, but they carried huge packs that included 4 large ragtag multilayered blankets. They have 3 good shovels but between 6-9’ long and heavy. Each has a sack of good semi-rounded rocks. Between them is 436 GP, 745 SP, 1265 CP. There is in silver & gold objects weighing about 60 pounds another 400 gold worth of stuff. Some very unchoice meat, though Hound can report none of it is human at least. No magic on any of them.

As the days pass the party nears Tharbad and the road improves and the King's Inns are every 15 miles starting 75 miles south of Tharbad. The town of Tharbad is thriving now. Some docks are rebuilt and 4 tall river sloops are in the harbor along with dozens of smaller boats.

August 19^th, FA65. The party will be able to rest in an inn this night and can afford a nice lunch in the town itself. Gilraen recommends using some of the troll money for a celebratory lunch. Does anyone want to do anything else in town?

As many recall; some soldiers, many mariners and many engineers are stationed at Tharbad. The land where Tharbad stood was marshy, so great drainage works and dikes were being rebuilt in order to rebuild the city and docks capable of receiving seagoing ships. A fortress has been built on raised earthworks. The great Bridge of Tharbad was erected to span the Greyflood. The North-South Road led to the bridge on elevated causeways on either side. The road is of neat set clean stone in excellent condition.

The closest King’s Inn is 7 miles from the Bridge and from this point on 3-foot tall mile markers are in place. At the 1 mile marker the road elevates further and the causeways begin. It starts climbing a bit up to a great stone bridge of a 350’ across and 45’ wide. It is as much as 45’ above the water. The center span is actually 45’ long. There are buildings and part of the town on the bridge itself. It is said that the engineers diverted the river itself to build the 12 great support pillars.

The town is walled and on both sides of the Bridge. Both sides also wind down to where a great port is building. A forestry project is visible to the North East along the marshes and doing very well. Some magic must have been at work here and in fact Drindoleth knows some of the Druids have assisted from time to time. The town is mostly of stone and looks like it can support hundreds of residents if not thousands. Nearly any service is available in the town.

Men, Dwarves and Hobbits all now live in Tharbad.


It will be 4 days to Bree from tonight's stop.

We should take the opportunity to speak with the residents, just to learn the latest news from the area, and understand if there are any new threats which may be abroad here (though, given the fact that the town appears to be thriving, that seems less likely). If nothing else, Kings Elfwine and Elessar may wish to hear the news.

Sir Thoroncir is glad to be back in Tharbad. Perhaps we should visit the Lord Mayor and pay our respects? The Sea-knight captain will otherwise offer his arm to Gilraen, and take her for dinner at the finest inn they can find.

Mulligan will keep her hands in her pockets. That is all.

Better see if there is any news from Bree (but not "News from Bree" if you get my drift).

Gilraen reminds Thoroncir, "We only have time for lunch and the Over the Arch Tavern should be a good choice. The King is well informed of the happenings of Tharbad, the Lord is the son of his late best friend. Lord Mayor Ianthír is the son of Halbarad."

Lorlianna mentions the town was only complete deserted less then 2 centuries ago. But cease being a port of note over a thousand years ago.

News that is collected in the time in the town:
It is indeed peaceful and trade is prospering. They have begun to act as a real trade port again like so many centuries ago.
Men are moving back into the area and some Hobbits. They've had plenty of help from the King, mainly in the form of gold and silver to hire men and Dwarves for the construction projects.
Orcs trouble the area not at all and the Dunlendings are friendly to the town and trade with it.

As to Bree, the news is minor, the town is growing and a new hedge has allowed for expansion of the main town. The Prancing Pony is still renown for its ale and hospitality. They have a Dwarven blacksmith in town now with 2 human apprentices. The crops are doing well though some worries about the barley crop as the summer was wetter than is best.

Ceol enjoys the opportunity for lunch and a good mug of ale in the inn. "We might also see if we can get some good fodder for the horses here in Tharbad, for the last leg of the journey to Bree."

Thoroncir will also enjoy lunch and some ale at the inn with Gilraen and his friends, and inquire after good sources of horse fodder.

"I was hoping to sleep in a warm bed tonight, Gilraen. I guess I will have to do with a large lunch then. Although it may take me a while." says Mulligan.

Given close proximity to Bree, Rorimac will look to refill his tobacco pouch with something a little fresher.

Fresher pipe weed is indeed available and good horse fodder can be found though it is a little pricey. It is a good mix of oats and barley with some molasses to give the horses plenty of energy for the road.

The lunch is tasty enough and not to expensive and the party sleeps at a King's Inn that night, filling it up.

The next four days are easy enough with only one rough rain storm to cause any problems and the party reaches Bree at about 7pm on August 23^rd, FA65.

The largest inn is of course the Prancing Pony. Renown by most travelers. As rooms are prepared for the large group, it is an excellent time to get a late supper and good drink in the common room. At about 8pm the party is told that their rooms are ready but Abel Butterbur is trying to encourage Gil-Gandel to perform and is holding out the lure that he thinks a very special guest would then be lured out if he does.

Of the coins found on the trolls, the party has not even spent all the coppers yet. Top Sgt Mandor reminds the party he'll be off early tomorrow with his troops to deliver further messages to Fornost.

Thoroncir murmurs to Gil-Gandel, "Come, my friend, indulge the barkeep with your harp, if you are willing. You need not even craft a new tune, if you are still weary from the road. Any song at all would be most welcome."

"I echo my friend knight," chimes in Bitur. "A song is perfect for an occasion such as this."

"Of course," says Gil-Gandel. "A few moments to, ahem, compose myself, if you will."

Deor, always ready to hear one of Gil-Gandel's works, will quietly buy a beer and sit back to watch and listen.

Drindoleth, too, will get himself something to drink and settle in to enjoy Gil-Gandel's indulgence of Butterbur's request.

If Gil-Gandel's unaccompanied singing is a little more... pesante... than usual, it is the time and place for it...

There is an inn, a merry old inn,
Beneath a fair green hill,
And there the beer has such a name
That the King himself need feel no shame
To come and drink his fill.

As Gil-Gandel finishes up, one Hobbit in particular speaks up and cheers. "Well done Gil-Gandel, well done indeed." Gilraen is first to rush over and give Uncle Merry a hug.

Thoroncir cheers the Elf-captain loudly, and laughs, "Gil-Gandel, I don't how you do it - but you have outdone yourself yet again! Only you could compose so perfect an ode to beer - to beer! - in mere moments." He then joins Gilraen in greeting the most estimable old Hobbit.

"Well sung, my friend. It puts me in mind to have another round."

"Friend Thoroncir, I take it that you have met this worthy, venerable hobbit before?"

"Yes, in Minas Tirith at the Elf Stone Inn," Thoroncir replies, "not all that long ago, when I first met Gil-Gandel and several other original members of this gallant band." He catches the barkeep's eye and buys Ceol's next tankard.

Master-Emeritus, Meriadoc the Magnificent, Holdwine True-friend - this is a happy meeting indeed. And since singing is thirsty work, let us toast this reunion in Butterbur's best. :)

"Uncle Merry", Mulligan is not far behind Gilraen in giving the old hobbit a hug.

Once the two ladies have finished, Rorimac goes across with two fresh tankards and offers one with a big grin. "Hello father, how are you."

Ceol bows deeply to Merry. "It is a great honor to meet you, sir. As a youth in Rohan, I often heard your name and deeds, in tales of true heroes. Never would I have imagined that I would have the opportunity to make your acquaintance."

Merry is singing at first but low,
"This beer the Valar's praise might sing,
But I am but an Halfling
And if you want another verse
Step up - for you cannot do worse -
And sing it, sir, yourself. "

"I like it, I like it indeed. I will gladly and merrily, if you will, join you in many a toast tonight though I will never make the mistake of trying to keep up with an Elf. It is good to see you and better yet to hear you."

"Good to see you again Thoroncir, though we've met a few more times since that chance occurrence at the Elfstone Inn. I hear you have a mission in life now to look after one of my favorites, Gilraen."

"I am doing very well." Indeed he looks surprisingly young, he is if anything growing younger every time you see him the last few years. "It is good to be friends with Wizards, Elves and Tom and perhaps even better to be friends to Ents and Druids. Son, I expect to hear what you have been up to since you left Raj. You appear to be doing well."

"I expect you are Ceol of Rohan, cousin to Theogrim and Deor. I respect your order greatly and hear nothing but good about you and your fellows." Turning towards Cwenhild, "I see the traditions of Éowyn continue, I greet thee Shield Maiden of the Eorlings. You Men of Rohan are fortunate to go to battle with such beauty." He greets Wilfrid you seems unable to speak, "This must be quite the occasion for 3 Holy Knights of Rohan to be working together and not in war. I am curious to hear more of your tale. I give good greeting, am I correct you are of the same order as Ceol?"

Wilfrid stammers out, "Y-y-yes and it is a great honor to meet Captain Meriadoc the Magnificent. You are a legend among our people. We of the Knight of Eönwë can only aspire to such deeds as yourself and the Lady Éowyn achieved."

Merry greets Deor, "Well met young Wizard and how fairs your brother and the rest of your family?"

He has barely met the rest of the party members though Lorliana shyly comes forward and curtsies, "Master Brandybuck, I am most honored to meet you, I have read your book and the King's copy of the Red Book and studied in Rivendell, Edoras and Minas Tirith. I have had the privilege to travel with your son and especially your niece. I hope I might have the chance to talk to you in the upcoming days, I plan to be staying here at the Pony for at least several days. I have been fortunate to interview Thain Peregrin and Gimli Gloin son along with the Princess of Ithilien Éowyn and a short conversation with both Prince Faramir and Legolas."

Gil-Gandel mutters "Dreams and legends spring to life out of the grass," and adds "and are we not in the presence of one of the most legendary: he who grew to stature unmatched even by the Bullroarer or any else of the Halflings save one; who made the Holbytlan known in the Mark, and was faithful to their King to his life's end; who set fatal blade to the dread Witch-King and thereby saved Ithilien's Lady; who blew the Horn of the Mark at sunset and brought a new day to the Shire?

"It is good to see you, Magnificent, but I beg leave to doubt that you be here only to sup ale - peerless as this is - with old friends. We shall toast indeed, for I fain would see if Hold-Wine is as apposite a pun as language would make it; but do I err greatly in supposing you have more serious business?"

Bitur goes to the bar and orders three drinks. He goes over to where the group is gathered and hands one to Gil-Gandel.

"In payment for your song. I figure the least I can do is buy for you the very inspiration of it. Thank you again."

He then takes another and offers it to Merry.

"Greetings, Captain Brandybuck. I am Bitur, son of Bofur. I do not believe we've ever been introduced. A true shame since we have many friends and acquaintances in common, and my father was a close friend of Bilbo all those years ago, just as you were a true friend of Frodo. It is my honor to meet you. I propose a toast, to new friends and to old."

Ceol bows to Merry a second time. "By your words, you do my order a great honor, and me even more so. We have, indeed, come together for a purpose, though I shall defer to Gil-Gandel and Thoroncir to discuss the details, at the proper time."

Merry replies as follows, "Actually this time I am between adventures. I came back to Bree & the Shire for a visit and I have some hopes to enlist the aid of the Druids to reach a peace with the Old Forest and Old Man Willow in particular. I have been adventuring again mainly in the North and just reached Bree on August 16th. In fact, Bitur, my companion is probably known to you and was well known for a little while by your father Bofur. Bokken was the Captain of the Guard for Thranduil when you father was an unwilling guest of the King. He'll probably be by a little later. A small group of us including Bjorn the High Druid, Mírëgol the Mage, Haldir of the Grey Company not to be confused with your fellow Sindarin Elf of the same name and several others made a fast raid and cleared the Mound of the Princes on the Downs. Myself and a few others then visited with Tom for a few days and then I rode back here to see my companions off. In the spring and summer I was one of many working once again with Glorfindel to clear more of Angmar. I have some excellent news on that front in fact for Princess Gilraen, we clear Carn Dum and the old City of Courl and killed hundreds if not thousands of orcs and their kin. We then broke Coal Town and Angsul."

"Bitur, well met indeed, I met your father once, it was during the War on Goblin Gate. If I recall correctly, that is when you joined with your companions. So we've come close to meeting many times now."

"Now folks, tell me what brings you group up here with such an interesting group of people."

"At it's simplest, we have to stop someone bad finding something and prevent them taking it away" says Rorimac with a grin, "which probably sounds fairly familiar. The longer version should probably wait for a quieter area in the morning over breakfast with clearer heads."

To move this along a little ... I will assume the party gives Merry some of the details ...
Merry comments, "Good luck, why don't I stay in Bree and see about organizing a secondary party to see about being ready to help if needed and possibly to cut this Kkósal off if he tries to flee. I know Bokken at least is around. Do you need more help? I am fairly tired and could use some rest, but I may well be able to help you get some quick support for tomorrow."

Then he motions the pair of Hobbits over to him and softly says, "If you are in dire need on the downs, remember and use this song for far more aid then I could ever provide.

Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!
By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow,
By fire, sun and moon, harken now and hear us!
Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

I wish you both the best of luck, Make me proud."

Gil-Gandel does not draw attention to the fact that his keen Elf-ears allow him to eavesdrop on private, albeit not intimate, conversation, but Merry's words remind him that he wishes to pay his nonpareil teacher a visit before we begin our expedition. Does anyone wish to come? Tom has next to no interest in any of Men's concerns, but he is a delightful host for such as enjoy peace and quiet, fresh air and clear water, and the last living memory of the ancient Dark when it was still innocent.

Thoroncir found himself oddly and irrationally irritated by Bombadil last time, so he will respectfully decline, but wishes Gil-Gandel well.

Bitur will accompany Gil-Gandel to visit Tom, having heard much about the "man", but never having met him.

Ceol bows to Merry. "Thank you for the offer of assistance, and the wisdom, o Meriadoc."

He will volunteer to accompany Gil-Gandel to see Tom Bombadil, out of curiosity and interest.

Lorliana speaks up, "I don't recommend you spend the time visiting. We rushed up here to try and stop Kkósal before he finds what he is looking for. If you can either find it first or better yet be there to stop him and cause him to lose his current corporal form it is of I believe grave importance. Though I understand Gil-Gandel could probably make it there and meet you on the road in the morning if he goes by himself."

"Thank you, Lorliana...you are right, we should remain focused on our task. Perhaps there will be time to visit with Tom afterwards, if we are successful."

"That makes sense," Sir Thoroncir agrees. "First things first, my father always said."

Deor nods, drains the last of his beer, and agrees. "We can stop by Tom Bombadil on the way home. At the moment, though, time is of the essence."

Yes, I had better be away, then; I can indeed be there and back swiftly. Celebrate well but wisely, and I shall see you in the morning.

So does the party seek any help or just set off in the morning? A reminder Lorliana will be staying in the Pony and the squad of Gondor Soldiers will be heading for Fornost.

Gil-Gandel does find Tom's house but Tom is out and about on one of his walk-abouts. Goldberry can only say he'll be back when he is ready.

If we can be circumspect about it, we should ask the fellow visitors to the Prancing Pony about any reports of interesting or unusual activity in the area, especially towards the Downs.

You succeed in gathering information. Most of it is on injuries to 3 men that were working with Bokken an Elf and that Merry Brandybuck's party rescued them and with Bokken cleared one of the larger mounds and then had a small army of people go in and take one item each of the treasure to scatter it.

One ranger, Haladain, does have more information. In the last week the wights have been acting disturbed and he feels it is more then the broken mound. His grandfather was a ranger patrolling Bree when the Hobbits disturbed a mound and the Ringwraiths were near. That was the only other time he knows of they seemed this agitated.

He also has seen high flying crebain recently. These large crows are evil birds and not to be confused with Ravens.

Mulligan and Rorimac will enquire around the hobbits in the Prancing Pony to see if any of them have any news of interest.

Someone else can chat to the humans.

If anyone could get some maps of the Barrow Downs, they might come in useful as well.

Well, wherever Tom is and whatever he is doing, Gil-Gandel is confident that it is exactly where and what that strange creature ought to be right now, so he will take his leave of the fair Lady (not without some reluctance) and head for the rendezvous point, asking Goldberry courteously to pass on his compliments to the Master.

Bitur will chat up any dwarves around as to what they know about strange goings-on.

You can see the barrow mounds marked on the map. There is a clump of 4 barrows near each other in the middle. The large central mound is known as the King's Barrow. To the south west is a mound and stone my itself. This is called the Lonely Mound and is one of the oldest of the mounds, dating to the first age. Generally most Dwarves will be able to tell you which mounds are first, second or third age. The mounds of the Princes was recently cleared.

Haladain & Merry will warn you, the Major Wights can summon mists, cast powerful sleep spells, their touch can cause sleep and paralysis. The can radiate fear out maybe 60'. No normal weapon will do much damage to them but enchanted items will and Holy Items are best. Some are skilled fighters and deadly in battles, others rely on subtle arts or will hide from those that are powerful. Merry reminds, "Tom Bombadil sent us onto the Barrow-downs during the daylight, for the wights have no power during the sun's hours. Creatures of the Shadow-world are blinded by the sun; they lose form and retreat to the darkness. These Wights are no exception."

The graves upon the Barrow-downs vary greatly in size and structure. The simplest are stone-lined pits covered with a mound of earth; these are naturally unhaunted on the inside since there is no entrance or exit. The mounds are often constructed of gravel or rubble covered by a layer of earth. These burial sites are First Age graves containing lesser members of the nobility, and are often clustered atop a ridge or on a smaller hill. Some were actually interconnected. Frequently other, later burials have been made at these sites simply by excavating a portion of the mound, interring the body, and then refilling the cavity.

Other tombs are more complex. Some are accessible by a long stone-lined shaft. These are built out of large, upright, interlocking rectangular stone blocks or posts set in a circle and covered with long ceiling stones (lintels). The most elaborate vaults consist of sophisticated stone cairn construction, with one or more chambers covered with an earthen mound that is topped by a protruding tooth of jagged stone. These tombs were used by several generations; the entrances were carefully filled after the last body was interred.

Walls were sometimes decorated with strange carvings in abstract shapes and designs. Most of the Edain kings and queens
are buried in this type of barrow, sharing the grave with their families and other kings. The Dunedain built more sophisticated tombs than did their fore-fathers. Some of the tombs of the early kings of Arnor bear a closer resemblance to a complicated earthwork rather than a simple barrow, but the basic design is very similar. The resemblance that springs to mind is that of a smial, for the Dunedain barrows are indeed houses of the dead rather than simple graves. These are barred with stout, heavy doors fixed with special locks to prevent access by the unwanted. The interiors are lined with reinforced stone, making it virtually impossible to enter the tomb by digging through the mound. Some of the keys to the barrows are with the kings of Arthedain, but the wights seem to have the power to open or close the doors at will. Most
tombs contain pitfalls to trap the intruder. These traps all contain mechanisms to shut them off when the proper folk use the passages.


I already covered the various races providing information above, I just assumed. There is no more then this and the above.

Thoroncir asks Merry, "You refer to 'the sun's hours,' sir, but the Wights will be no less powerful even at high noon if they remain in darkness, correct? That is, it is not the presence of the sun in the sky above that matters, if they are not actually exposed to its light? For deep beneath the ground it is eternal night, absent some other source of illumination brought to bear."

This has all the hallmarks of start at one end and work our way down to the other. Would it be worth trying to retrieve the keys for the tombs from the kings of Arthedain, because I don't think we are going to find a friendly wight to do it for us.

I wonder if there is a way to narrow down which barrows we may have to enter or detect what we are looking for from the surface, perhaps it is more evil than other things there.

Merry says, "Yes, very true and my understanding is that mere torches or lanterns won't scare them in their lairs but will help out on the downs at night. Much like even the Nazguls could be slowed or stopped by torches far from home but near the black land could not."

Merry and the others agree that the keys are beyond retrieval and we must rely on skilled treasure finders, spells and perhaps brute strength.

Trying to locate the object will be very hard as we don't know what it is, but it should be in one of the later mounds in all likelihood. The Witchking found some way to leave and item where it could do the most harm and his enemies were the Dunedain of the third age."

Lorli suggest, "It would be in the tomb of one of the King's of Arnor as only they took back any trophies of winning battles against the Ringwraiths. This will at least narrow it. I think you need one more to aid you. Someone the knows the mounds."

"I wonder," muses Thoroncir, "if Amlaith the Ranger is still around. Perhaps he would be able to assist us, or suggest someone who could?"

Haladain hears Thoroncir and replies, "Amlaith is most probably in Angmar currently along with Falcon Master. Most of the Ranger Chiefs are there in fact. Why do you seek him?"

"Amlaith was of good service to the Princess and me last year," Thoroncir says. "He is wise, and skilled in both warfare and woodcraft, as I observed. I would be glad to see him again."

"Ah, just social. I thought there might be a specific need."

"Well, yes, there might," says the Sea-knight captain, "if he knows the mounds."

I did write, "Perhaps he would be able to assist us, or suggest someone who could?"

Haladain answers, "Well I know the mounds fairly well and while I am not particularly skilled at fighting the Barrow Wights, I do know the signs of their subtle magics and know some of the history. If you want it, I would consider it a privileged to aid your group."

"Thank you, Haladain," Thoroncir says. "Let us discuss your kind offer with Gil-Gandel, who is our Elf-captain. And how might we reach Amlaith, if we wish him to come along as well?"

"Any help we can get will be useful." says Rorimac, "we start at first light hopefully. Let's mark off the mounds we should aim for and then start at the nearest one and work our way down. It might be good for everyone to get a good night's sleep as well."

Haldain marks up his map with some quick notes, especially going over the details with Rorimac, his fellow Ranger.
