Just as an aside to the game - how should this situation be handled as I'm unsure and hopefully you can clarify. How do you resolve a correct guess which answers the question but is not the answer the person was looking for?

Mason Verger was an educated guess to your question, it was from memory and it was a correct answer, but it would probably take a quick check to confirm it completely.

What should happen in that situation: Is it up to the quizmaster to know for sure that their answer is correct, can the guess be checked by someone else as confirmation (as occurred in this situation), should the asker check to make sure the answer does fit their question - what is the next step to resolve it?

As for the not-doing-research cavil, we needed an arbiter, someone had to check, and as a disinterested party (players are vying against each other as well as against the guesser) I fit the bill.

Hey, there are three of us playing and EH ain't the GM in this game, so let's put it to a vote: in a case of a possible correct answer, may a third party do the required research to settle a point? I see no problem with it since it's not like researching one's own questions/answers, thus not ruining the spirit of the "memory only" clause. So that's an "aye" from me.

#1: Hee, Liz and Phil are cousins but they ain't that close. But you're right that Phillip adopted Mountbatten (the literal translation of the too-Germanic-sounding Battenberg!) as his last name right before marrying Elizabeth, so good memory! But I meant Mary II, as in the 1st cousin/wife of William III, and the daughter of James II. After James II was booted off the throne, she was co-regnant with her husband William. I chose my phrasing purposefully. The name of the eventual show is possessive: "Monty Python's Flying Circus." It was intended to refer to a fictitious individual. From Wiki:

#1 - while "Happy Birthday" is sung more often than any other song, the song with the most recorded cover versions is "Yesterday," by Paul McCartney of course, and the fact that he wrote three more of the most-performed songs should've been your clue. Who else is such a songsmith? (The other songs by Sir Paul on the list are "And I Love Her," "Blackbird," and "Eleanor Rigby." Nope, Marco Polo is me having fun, although the question is so open to interpretation, that anyone non-British in the timespan could fit the bill. Though in MP's days, the Israelites were still not popular across Europe and faced hostility, so most people would be disagreeable towards them as a matter of course.

OTOH, while Ratko Mladic was certainly notorious, highly ranked in the Army and responsible for atrocities in the wars, he was not a Serb Leader, as in leading the Serb people.

Ah, the athlete/sportsman distinction must be a UK vs. U.S. thing--we call anyone in sports an athlete. (Just did a quick lookup and yep, the definition on Google is given as someone who plays sports either individually or on a team, and then they say "British English: someone who is skilled in competitive track and field." Amazing how subtle the differences in the same language can be!)

Well, football or non-soccer, as we call it :devil:, is definitely not in my wheelhouse. Just thinking of M names, I can imagine Peyton/Eli Manning, who aren't retired; Joe Montana, who could be a very good choice because he must've done some screen appearances...except i have no idea how old he is; Dan Marino, who I know was MVP a few times and was super-famous for a while, but other than that, he's a blank to me; and Mike Ditka, who is 400 years old so it can't be him.

I'm stumped on question #3, mainly because I can't quite parse it. This person killed his father... who had previously killed him in an earlier battle? Is this an immortal?

But the real point is #2, because naturally I jumped out of EH's frying pan into the inevitable CIAS fire. Yes, damn it, I am Merlin! Who, depending on the version of the tale, was trapped by Nimue/Vivianne (the Lady of the Lake) or--in the movie Excalibur--by Morgana le Fay, who really was his disciple.

EH you were so close with that "light changing" question--in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain, the hero, who time-travelled to Camelot from the 1800s, is arrested due to Merlin's having convinced King Arthur (and the mob in general) that the hero's a heretic who should be burned at the stake because he's so strange. The hero famously predicts an eclipse and is considered an amazing wizard, thus sparing his life.

So I really thought you had me there--never heard of that story about Manson! Plus, you'd just asked me about "mythical" so I thought you were on the right track. (Would you call Merlin mythical? I'm not sure why I wouldn't, exactly... the difference between "legendary" and "mythical" is almost nil, and yet I would definitely call him the former, but not the latter. What do you think?)

#2 was close with the name, but Tom Jones is an 18th century book if I'm not mistaken. I was looking for Uncle Tom, from Uncle Tom's Cabin (which was only outsold by the Bible in the 1800s). Perhaps the epithet "Uncle Tom" isn't used much in England? It' s a perjorative used against blacks who are seen to be 'happy' to be subservient or deferential to whites. But the actual character isn't like that at all--he's quite dignified (bearing in mind the time period we're talking about). The book is anti-slavery.

#3 is Mr. Tumnus the Faun from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, who is the first creature Lucy Pevensie meets in Narnia. He invites her home planning to turn her over to the White Witch, but doesn't and is petrified

1. Huh, a famous male columnist. It was hard enough to think of anyone other than Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons. Men were relatively rare in that field until recently, and I can't think of any with "A" as a name. Earl Wilson, Walter Winchell... heck, even today I can only think of Perez Hilton. Stumped very badly.

2. For some reason the only person I can think of from roughly that era is Alger Hiss, and I know that's not right. :D So, stumped again.

The book is indeed the Guns of Navarone and the author was Alaistair McLean, one of the finest thriller writers there was.

OMG, I have no idea how I misread your questions so badly. It doesn't even make sense, because in my pea-sized brain, the first question was asking about the author of the gun-related book, and the second question was asking if you, i.e. the author, also had a small part in that film. Oh crapples, you're right about Rashiv Gandhi. Sorry about that. He was in the middle of campaigning to get back into power. Well, at least you got it correct so I don't feel that bad for having a lousy memory. And yes, indeed, #2 was of course Isabeau! Love that film too. The '80s synthesizer soundtrack almost ruins things, but otherwise, it's an enjoyable and well-cast movie. Matthew Broderick was particularly adorable. Kinda surprised it hasn't been remade yet--with all the fans of werewolves and other changeling/shapeshifters these days, you'd think some crappy attempt at exploiting it would've appeared by now.
