Most other online forums that I've visited that are oriented towards serious discussion have rules like this; I think it was sort of stupid that the SDMB admins never did, especially given how often people complained about rancor and sniping.

Re: A Kinda Half-Assed Apology From Ed, Sorta Thing
Let's posit a partisan (forget which kind for now) making an egregious error of historical fact in a heated post--a key question is the tone he or she is likely to strike in dealing with the error. I am pretty sure that many partisans of both stripes would simply say, "My bad, sorry, got carried away, should have caught that, I fucked up" and so on, but some would seek to minimize it, point out how their opponents make many more serious errors, nitpick the grammar of the person who pointed out his or her error, and generally argue for victory more than for clarity. If I have done so in the past, then I was wrong and I apologize for it. But the people I'm castigating here as tighty-righties do this, not as an aberration but as their entire modus operandi, and it's tedious as hell to deal with and its dishonesty is exhausting. I thank those of you who strive to do this as rarely as possible, and who argue, from whatever position, with a goal of explaining why you think as you do and of understanding why others take the position they do.

Re: A Kinda Half-Assed Apology From Ed, Sorta Thing
Sorry to butt in with a technical question. Is the following correct?
For years, due to a design limitation of the third-party board software we use, searches would often bring board operation to a halt. in regards to the SDMB. I've heard both agreement and disagreement about it. (This is from Ed's latest post in ATMB over there).

Shodan, do you realize that it's kind of pathetic that you spend so much of your time coming up with excuses not to respond to other posters in a serious, respectful way? I mean, you're a pretty prolific poster at the SDMB, and you have been for years, and you're well known specifically for your schtick in which you refuse to reply to people's arguments because those people are "the usual suspects".
I mean, think about it: for years now, you have spent probably hours every day finding excuses to dismiss other people's opinions in order to avoid your having to actually consider them. Think about that, dude. It's not just the intellectual cowardice it shows to spend so much time trying to find excuses not to consider other viewpoints. It's also the fact that all you have to show for it after all that rationalization is hundreds and hundreds of conversations with other people about how little you respect them.

For the benefit of those of us who got tired of sniping and bitterness on the other board and would like at least another few hours of thinking it might not spread like Internet kudzu over here, read this (again, if necessary) and tell me, do, why you're not willing to drop it and allow for the possibility that people can actually begin again:

Bolding mine. Bold action. Honorable action.
Are you able to match it?
This is a new place. If we try hard, we can avoid most of what made the old one a pain, if only for an hour. (Maybe more. Only the future knows for sure.)
Please? Hell, insult me in your reply if you need an out:) Or don't even answer the question, just snipe, but then stop after you hit submit, if that's how you need to save face.
It just doesn't have to be all the old bickering all the time. (Not even in this subforum.)

Re: A Kinda Half-Assed Apology From Ed, Sorta Thing
This is one of my main issues with Shodan's posts. I get it that you don't respect my views much, I get it that you think you have long sine previously refuted any content I may claim to post, I get it that you feel your mind is made up on most political issues and you feel free to dispense with any substantive arguing--so why keep repeating yourself so much? I GET IT. Can we move on, please? If you have nothing to offer other than mockery and disdain, could you try to keep it to yourself once in a great while? Thanks ever so much.

Re: A Kinda Half-Assed Apology From Ed, Sorta Thing
Pun, I'm all for civility, but Excalibre has demonstrated from his first post here that he intends to be an ornery jackass. His very first post to me was some bullshit about some perceived drama (a perception shared by no one else) — a carry-over from his ankle nipping Pit days. Go ahead. Click his profile, and search his posts. I've tried on at least two occasions to mollify him with friendly banter, but he ignores that. He's interested only in conflict and tension. He's doing the same with Shodan before your very eyes. He's in the Polling forum drumming up imaginary shit and attributing it to me. I'm all for your endeavor to calm people down, but you need to aim at the assholes rather than Napalming the whole place.

So don't respond to my posts.
This is nothing more than a whine that I don't allow you to get in the last word, and choose instead to make fun of your nonsense. As you noticed, any substance you may have included has long since been refuted. But complaining that all you get after the substantive discussion is done is me having a great deal of fun at your expense? Boo hoo.
It's like your foolishness about how my sign off should get me warned because sometimes I mean it as "fuck you". Either you don't understand sarcasm, in which case you're an idiot, or you do, in which case you are a troll. And now you are complaining because stupidity and/or trolling gets nothing back from me but derision. Get back under the bridge, or don't be such a moron, or both.

Look, dude, you decided to turn a nothing issue (changing the wording of that poll question) into a big, Liberal-oriented dramafest. Jesus, it's not even that big of a deal. You may not be able to laugh at your own shortcomings, but do you really want to be the guy that makes everyone else walk on eggshells? You didn't have to go to unrelated threads and start insulting me. You're continuing to follow me around shrieking insults, just like you did for years to me and EddyTeddyFreddy (of all people!) back at The Other Place.
Why not let this shit go? And when you do something a little goofy like your overreaction in the poll thread, why can't we all chuckle a little and move on? That's what other people do, Liberal. You don't have to look for every chance you can to be hateful and negative.
For what it's worth, I didn't want to start some huge, negative, mean-spirited fight with you, Liberal. I thought we could laugh at ourselves a little now that it's been, what, two years since we talked? You talk a lot about kindness and decency and stuff like that -- get in touch with me when you want to actually try those things out.

Re: A Kinda Half-Assed Apology From Ed, Sorta Thing
And to elaborate: There's just no chance at all that I could be objecting to sig lines in general, and to specific sig lines that the poster has designated are intended to convey "fuck you," which is not helpful to most rational discussions when offered on a wholesale basis, is there? I simply MUST be either an idiot or a troll, beause other possibilities might lead to a discussion of my concerns, or otherwise validate them. I don't find you contributing much to most discussions, other than a general sense of animosity and ill-will, mostly for your own satisfation. That may do a lot for you, but it does nothing for me and, as far as I can tell, for the level of discourse around here for anyone but you. Your posts are self-indulgent and, usually, at best diversionary from whatever the thrust of most conversations are about. I'd like to encourage your re-consideration of the role you are playing on a discussion board, and maybe bring the quality of that discussion up a bit.

Seriously dude, get the fuck over yourself and let people be.
I can assure you that neither Hentor nor Lib need any help from me when it comes to standing up for themselves*, but, as last time, that is not why I'm stepping in. Simply doing it to tell you, that based on what I've seen of your "analysis" of other posters merit or worth, you'd be a lot better at it if you practiced standing in front of a mirror. Because, quite frankly, you're coming off as exactly the opposite of what I'm sure you wish to impress upon us. Unless of course, being a snippy little bitch was your aim.
If so, congrats. You're all that and a bag of chips.
*In fact, as opposed to last time with Hentor, I won't even bother to explain to you why it is that I am willing to stand up for Lib. You're obviously too goddamn self-absorbed to comprehend any judgment that differs from your own. A forum of One would be just the ticket for someone such as yourself.

John is mad at Suzie because Jacob dated Susie's mother while John's father was still seeing Jessi with an I. But Clarence had already told Angie that Margot wasn't Wendy's sister, which matters because Jacob's aunt Rhonda and Wendy's sister Padma were supposedly lesbian lovers. Except that Rhonda was a man and Padma was halfway finished switching, none of which either of them discovered because they were saving themselves for marriage. It wasn't until gay marriage was struck down in Idaho that they moved to Massachusetts, where their bisexual minister, Hans, sexually propositioned both of them, but separately. When Rhonda found out through her Rabbi, Abe, who is Hans's down-low lover, she went apeshit and spilled all the beans to Angie. That's when Angie exploded on Clarence, who ran sobbing to Jessi with an I. She told John's father that she has herpes, and he told Jacob, who told Susie's mother. Suzie doesn't yet know.

Excalibre very much does not need my assistance in standing up for himself but I must confess I do not understand all the ire. I have always found him to be unfailingly honest and uncompromising in his principles. I know if I ask his opinion what I will get will be the unvarnished truth even if he knows I won't like it. I respect that. Diplomacy has its place but it shouldn't disable honesty.
As for his not letting people be; when did we start doing that around here?

When a potentially better place came along, at a moment when my frustrations were particularly high, I jumped over here, and am very glad I did.

I'm glad you did too, prr. I'm glad ETF did. I'm glad about nearly everyone coming over.

Me too. I'm happy to see everyone, even people who irritate me (I know! Hard to believe they exist, eh?). Mostly because it takes all kinds to make a world. There are some whom I wish would change their minds and join. Perhaps they will.
