Star Trek RPG - Setup thread

Also....

The episode is one of the earliest I remember seeing as a kid. I saw it a few years ago and enjoyed it all over again. Favorite bits: Kirk's sleuthing to figure out what's really going on with the colonists; the creepy movement of the spore plants (and that Sixties bass guitar music!) before we understand what they do; Spock's initial discomfort and aloofness with Kalomi, followed by his giddy romance with her; Kirk being repeatedly flummoxed by his mutinous crew (esp. Spock); his sense of isolation as he finds himself alone on an uncharacteristically - almost shockingly - empty ship; his tragicomic insults of Spock to provoke him; and Spock's final sad goodbye to Kalomi, followed by his, Kirk's and McCoy's classic little conversation on the Bridge at the end.

I've just changed post 505 in the game thread a bit, with more as to what Ens. Rangin's learned about the Omicron pod plant.

Damn! I'm a Redshirt, too. Yikes! Crusher came in a close second, though. :)

Erm since my girl's the only one stuck with an NPC partner (thanks a lot, Collins! :D), and a very quiet one at that, I'm not sure how much initiative Kylah can realistically take here. Is it possible for Lt. Delaney to start being a tad more proactive as senior officer or is it okay for Kylah to just say "screw it, you Marcel Marceux-wannabe, I'm going to the gym with or without your permission"?

I'd go with the latter. ;)

If she's a bit more tactful than that, making suggestions rather than being pushy (just like you did in your most recent post), the second option would be fine.

Thanks. Well, I'm still in an awkward position here. This employee just spoke to Kylah and Delaney. Normally, wouldn't Delaney be the one to answer? Should I assume that Kylah's the one who should be talking here? Admittedly she is Communications, and girlfriend does have the gift of gab, but it seems odd for her to just speak up without looking at Delaney for permission. May I do so, and may I assume he nods? Or should I just ask that in the thread? Hm. I probably should just ask that in the thread. It'll take longer but it's probably the Way Things Are Done.

Just take the initiative. Perhaps Delaney is feeling a bit shy/sluggish/overwhelmed today. He'll speak up if you do something he doesn't like.

Crapples, I didn't even see that message. Well, at least there's an in-character reason for that--Kylah was busy trying to concentrate on sensing the emotions inside the rooms. I'm sure if she'd heard him she'd've responded happily!

The different takes on romance lately are kinda hilarious. Graham met Bennett, like, three days ago? And already he's obsessing on her and thinking about buying her gifts. Meanwhile Kylah and Rangin can't seem to communicate and each is (wrongly) convinced that the other isn't interested that way. (And Kylah's a freakin' empath!) Collins and Cooper are on the skids, it appears, and poor T'Var's only romantic hint came from icky Dr. Waite, of all people.

Should be interesting to see how these things develop... or don't.

In fairness to Collins, Sam Adams has been around for nearly two centuries already. Well, 1 1/2 I suppose. The Yuengling brewery is 200 years old. And actually, Sam Adams teamed up with Weihenstephan, which is the world's oldest brewery (from the 11th century!!!) to create a sort of Champagne-like beer (bubbly and lighter w/more alcohol). So if somehow Germany's Weihenstephan brewery managed to last through heavens knows how many ancient wars plus two World Wars, it's possible Sam Adams could last through the Eugenics wars or whatever craziness happened on Earth prior to the 23rd century.

True, but the recipe was formed in 1860, as did the Koch family brewery that created it (although it of course closed during Prohibition). The Great-great-grandson is Jim Koch, the current brand's founder.

In any event if other breweries have survived for a thousand years, I don't see why Sam Adams couldn't. BTW Memory Alpha sucks when it comes to foods! Most of the interesting named dishes are from post-TOS era aliens. Then again, that's probably not Memory Alpha's fault--I guess TOS-era writers weren't as into world-building as the TNG, DS9, VOY and even the ENT folks. (But I didn't want to use ENT examples since that's not canon.)

Rangin is intending to be a perfect gentleman to both Dr T'Var and Kylah. He will leave the chauvinism to the Terrans.

I like it - well done! How close is that to your mental image of Kylah?

Thanks! It's pretty close, really, considering Kylah's background and physical description so far; I did some tweaks to the original model accordingly. Darkened her hair and especially her eye color, lengthened her hair (it was originally about down to her ears), and of course added the ST:TOS uniform and star background. What I liked about this pic of the model was her facial expression. It has Kylah's attitude down. :)

If I had to choose an actress to portray me Collins, it would be Laura Prepon with short hair.

Vargas really is exactly how I pictured him. And re: Bennett... yeah, to me she seems so young! I know she's 28 but looks sooo much younger. Ever since EH mentioned Knightley as Bennett's inspiration (oh lord, I just got the "Bennett" part!!!) I've had trouble picturing Graham with her, especially since he's got such daughter issues*...and even more especially since in my mind he looked like that damn dirty ape :D.

When I originally conceived Collins for the Star Trek RPG my friends and I were playing, I envisioned Tasha Yar with red hair. But the other day I watched a Castle rerun wherein LP plays an actress hired to play Nikki Heat and she followed Beckett around everywhere, eventually mimicking her, and I thought. "Yeah, That's Collins. Tall. Confident. Good looking. with a devilish streak"

That would be more sensible...one might say 'more logical :bravo:... on the downside (?) T'Var's (even more impressive than he knows) ability to take care of herself would not tee up the same connection to his crippling guilt about failing to protect his wife when the GM unveils some fiendishly cruel plot twist...

On the other hand who knows how long Bennett will feel that as a brilliant, accomplished, high-potential beautiful young woman what she really needs to make her life complete is a disturbed old guy? Does the phrase "on the rebound" translate into Vulcan? :???:

True love can bloom between consenting adults regardless of age differential or personal issues, and I suspect "cougar," "May-December" or "cradle-robber" jokes will lose a lot their punch several hundred years from now.

Goodness, you're so serious! I'm just kidding here. Well, mostly! I'll grant you age gaps may not matter that much (possibly) but no way regarding personal issues. Psychological problems and neuroses are huge obstacles in relationships, fictional or real, which, let's face it, is why angst is such a popular theme in romances.

Graham seems to have a whole magazine stand of issues. The poor guy's obsessing on a chick he's briefly spoken to three times, putting her on a pedestal and continually mentally comparing her to his late wife whose death he feels responsible for. That's borderline creepy if it were real life -- I mean he literally can't think of her without bringing up the late great Jane! (More Austen references, heh. Plus his daughter's Elizabeth, too. Oh wait, no, holy crap, general, did you grab Booker AND Elizabeth from BioShock? I knew you used the former but I didn't put the 'Elizabeth' together until just now. Wow, I'm slow. That's it, next time I'm creating a tough-girl character named Alyx with a crush on a nuclear physicist named Gordon. :D) If I were Bennett's friend I'd be telling her to stay faaar away. No offense, I like Graham a lot, I just think he's got some scary things goin' on in that head of his.

Honestly now that I think of it, I do somewhat disagree on the age difference. In ancient times through medieval and the Victorian eras, it was copacetic for men to marry women/girls several decades their junior. As time has passed, western culture has generally narrowed the age gaps of couples (certain celebrity marriages aside). I suppose it could start moving back toward the other dynamic, especially as longevity increases, but it's not a given.

Anyway, the major problem is psychological differences. Bennett is perfection and Graham is scum (acc. to him). That is a recipe for disaster unless Graham gets himself some self-esteem and a more realistic view of Bennett. Of course it doesn't help that she's basically written as being perfect, so he'll have to search hard to find any flaws that accidentally leaked onto the GM's Mary Sue template. :D

Any old way, I'll still root for my gal T'Var eventually getting some romantic interest. Heaven knows she deserves better than Waite! I think she and Graham'd be facinating--fire and ice, emotional wreck and logic/repression, "women are dainty china dolls" vs. "I'm a freakin' Vulcan stronger than you, deal with it." So I'm hoping Bennett is killed by an Orion--named Wickham, ideally, to continue the P&P theme!--and T'Var has to pick up the pieces of Graham's inevitable breakdown.

Good God, now I'm writing RPG fanfic fanfic. How meta. What the hell is wrong with me? I guess it goes to show there are some very interesting characters and premises running around the Yorktown.

Bennett isn't perfect - no one is (not even Keira Knightley!). T'Var already knows of at least one major character flaw. The young Englishwoman's CHA is off the charts, though, and Graham is still a bit dazzled and just hasn't had the chance to discover her shortcomings yet. Time will tell whether or not he ever does.

And when he does, he can bitch and moan to his new kid sister! :D

At that point he's ten years younger than Edward Norton is now! Henried was only 34. FWIW I'm personally glad to have Kylah partnering w/Graham; don't want too much lovey-dovey stuff all the time. (Olus, Kylah is gonna feel inhibited enough talking with guests in front of Graham--it'd be worse with Rangin.) More interesting to mix up the dynamics. For example I'm enjoying the T'Var/Rangin pairing, though I'd also be curious to see Collins with T'Var or Rangin; perhaps especially the latter, since Rangin clashed a bit with Collins during the Sakathian mission.

What I'm enjoying most about the RPG, along with the stories, has been trying to develop different sorts of relationships between Kylah and all the other PCs. Collins/Kylah are antagonistic (or at least not palsy-walsy, let's say!), Kylah/T'Var are somewhat mentorly/caring, Kylah/Rangin are, well, sorta circling each other in a protracted courting ritual, and Kylah/Graham are... well, we have yet to see that, although Graham is doing some major fatherly-projecting while Kylah is wary of him. I think inter-PC dynamics are the most fun to explore!

Seeing as I have never seen any of Ed Norton's acting that I actually like, I'll stick with Paul Henried.

The alternative was likely to be a mix between Tim Roth and David Niven. :D

Ahhh, okay, it you're going after the Tim Roth look (but better looking IMHO) then you might check out one of my first celeb crushes, Jake Weber (from American Gothic and Medium). Here he is as young Dr. Crower on AG back in 1996, when he was in his very early thirties, and here he is now, at 49... but he's still got it, IMHO. I find him incredibly attractive in an understated, charming way--it helps that he's a warm, subtle actor. (Okay I managed his fan site back in the 1990s so I'm still a bit gushy, shut up. But he really is wonderful.) His unassuming personality is a good match for Rangin.

Yeah, Weber looks like he could be a good fit.

Henreid looks 'waaaay older than Norton to me, and not just because he's in B&W.

The Federation certainly seems to have a post-scarcity economy, but other polities and societies don't, and trade (free, or restricted to varying degrees) still seems to be a major economic force in the galaxy. Even after all that time, this is her first actual sexual attraction to him. (And, um, possibly to anyone.)

Meanwhile, 50-year-old world-weary experienced Booker Graham's known Bennett like three days and he's already dying to buy big teddy bears and make mix tapes for the girl.

And yes, T'Var is more than capable of defending herself and others. She was also a member of the V'Shar. Not your typical physician.

The good doctor would love to have a family of her own one day, though she's finding it very difficult to find a suitable mate. She has high standards, of course. Her youthful mistake with Dr. Henry Waite has taught her a lot.

That makes perfect sense of course...but for Graham, since he's has been having trouble fitting T'Var into the (fairly limited) number of buckets he uses to categorize people (going all the way back to her display of some emotion on the ship), he's grasping for other signals ("Ah ha! WES you know in my own mental fanfic, I've been rooting for T'Var to get out of Graham's lesbian box (um, wow, that's not the best way to put that, is it?) and end up in an entirely different category, although that'd have to wait for his Galatea to fall off her pedestal (ideally smashing to bits in the process :D).

I'm just as amused by the appearance of yet another Caitian. Our GM seems to love them even though they never actually appeared on TOS! (Well, except for the movies.) Presumably this one won't get killed off as quickly as the last one. Although now that I think of it, there's no proof he died in the Sakathian lab incident; if he's anything like my cats, he was probably the fastest one running onto the life pods!

Ooh! We don't see that characterization often in Star Trek. At least, not on any of the TNG-era series I watched regularly. It was always the non-Federation (or other species like some of those Vulcan snobs from DS9) who were xenophobes.

I've seen that around but hadn't listened yet. That is so so bloody marvelous. I also love that he used all the cast, not just Stewart. (Poor Wil Wheaton! I'm sure he got a kick out of it though, he has such a good sense of humor.)

The guy is a genius for tacking that kickstarter appeal to the video -- it's just too bad he didn't have the forethought to have a mailing list website ready to go, because people could have at least clicked to sign up for notification. This way he could take advantage of the goodwill he's engendering now, rather than hoping people remember it later. I mean, he has the Twitter account, but 'twas foolish not to grab emails while he could.

Oh dear. Wilson is clearly intimidated by the length of Graham's... knife.

(Though I suppose it's really Falstofe's knife that's so impressive. Which perhaps explains his popularity.)
