My thinking as well. I'd love to see a wider range of political beliefs here, as well as more thoughtful discussions between different political camps. There are a lot of very articulate, wonderful people out there who don't hold my political beliefs. Stagnating with us vs. them is going to cut off a lot of potentially insightful, eye-opening and maybe even mind changing discussions.Quote:

The Republicans are the right arm.
The Democrats are the left arm.

I think all of you are funny with your oh-so-serious discussions of left-this and right-that when you are all so far right of centre that you can hardly see it from there.
Did I write "all Republicans suck"? I did not. I specified "tight-righty nitwits on the SD" because their Party affiliation has very little to do with how or what, they argue. I apologize to all Republicans who feel that I mean them when I specify "tight-righty nitwits" and then go on to describe the sort of nitwit I mean, "Blablabla...etc", that I assume doesn't apply to them, other than in their consciences when they realize who they're in bed with. I'd be glad, Fenris, if you want to open up a thread about your political positions, because you're a reasonable and fair-minded fellow on many other points, and I'd be interested in reading your views on political subjects even if they don't mesh up with mine, which aren't exactly your "factory-ordered liberal claptrap" either. But arguing with people who can't even figure out their positions except if Rush and Palin are for it, it's got to be good? You don't like that any more than I do.Quote:

Sorry about the overreaction.
We like all kinds here, baby! Republicans. Democrats. Workers of the World. Whatever...
Not a problem, Fenris. Sorry about expressing myself in a way that let you think I was inviting your first response to it. I lost a longer version of this post that I don't have time to compose again, but I look forward to discussing political issues with my friends of all political persuasions here, of whom I count several already, without the predictable vituperation that prevailed on the SD.Quote:

No offense intended (and none taken, really) but I don't think the idea that I post mostly one-liners is justified.Quote:

I certainly get off my share of one-liners, but frankly, some of the Usual Suspects deserve no more. Because fairly often, I will post eight paragraphs with three cites, and have it either ignored, or see nothing but something on the level of "Clinton was impeached for a blowjob!" or something similar.
And not to be too snarky, but read most of the posts immediately before this one, and compare their lengths with mine.

I gotta apologize to you for disrespecting you so much lately over there. I think maybe Obama (blessed be his name) came between us. Sorry about that. I think I have room to love you both.

I'm seriously hoping that we can start this board out with thoughtful discussions that don't immediately devolve into partisan bickering. As much as I like Shodan, I don't like to see him using the term "usual suspects" in his 3rd post. On the other hand, prr started it with his "tighty righty" thing. Dude, every time you say that it makes me want to stomp on your little lizard head. I was all touched that you named me as one of your friends, and then I come over here and you insult me. Sure, you can say that you didn't mean me, but it's really pretty hard to figure out your criteria for who falls in that category. I'm on the right, so it seems I qualify.
Anyway, can't we all just try to get along for maybe like a month or so? I've been trying to get real-life friends to join this place, because we desperately need non-SDMB blood. Don't chase them away.

Sarah--Sorry, you don't qualify for the tighty-righty club, which is basically mean-spirited and reflexive partisan namecalling, with zero sense of nuance and total blindness to shades of gray. It's just tedious to discuss anything at all with partisans of any stripe, whereas you're always at least willing to articulate your reasoning process and to explain your meaning on request in a way that assumes I'm not necessarily your worst enemy on the planet. If we ultimately disagree on fundmental principles, I'm at least satisfied on clearing up just which principles are involved in each discussion, and not descend to attacking each other's humanity, morality, and honesty. I'm glad to discuss politics with anyone willing to concede that there is the possibility that I could be right on some issues, which I'll willingly concede to anyone coming from a different place on the spectrum from me. Shodan, frankly, argues for victory far more often than he does for clarity, very rarely achieving either, and I'm unwilling to engage in that sort of endless, pointless personal chest-thumping for even as long as I have done it in the past on SD.
Then you probably won't enjoy this:Quote:

See, I am with you 100% on this. I didn't participate in many political threads at the other place because they were always derailed by these kinds of things. Someone would say something stupid and inflammatory, and it was, I guess, incumbent upon everyone else to ignore it. And usually someone would give into temptation and respond.Quote:

I think that, if a poster thinks that another person's viewpoints can be dismissed because they're a "tighty righty" or just another one of "the usual suspects", then they have every right not to respond. I don't think it should be acceptable to respond with insults -- even ones like these that were acceptable at The Other Place.
If folks want a more convivial attitude, it makes sense to discourage the root of the problem. Everyone's all huggy and shit right now, but it's not going to last, and besides: "everyone smile and be cool when people call you a tighty righty" is not really a solution anyway. All of the stuff people say that essentially boils down to "this is why your post is not even worth reading" is aggravating and ensures that any useful conversation is derailed. If someone else's post isn't worth reading, just don't read it.
I don't.Quote:

I agree very much. I like having Shodan around. Maybe it is as simple as with him around posters like yourself, Fenris, Oakminster and myself look very moderate overall. Maybe it is the same reason I enjoy having Excalibre around in that provacative intelligent posters make message boards interesting. If the board was filled with nothing but posters like Whynot and Myself they would be very civil and accomodating but also more boring. I'm sure we would have fun in the The Guggenheim and Jibba Jabba but I like the give and take of the entire spectrum of domebo and the dope.Quote:

(ETA: It would be good if I could spell on occasion.)
Let's posit a partisan (forget which kind for now) making an egregious error of historical fact in a heated post--a key question is the tone he or she is likely to strike in dealing with the error. I am pretty sure that many partisans of both stripes would simply say, "My bad, sorry, got carried away, should have caught that, I fucked up" and so on, but some would seek to minimize it, point out how their opponents make many more serious errors, nitpick the grammar of the person who pointed out his or her error, and generally argue for victory more than for clarity. If I have done so in the past, then I was wrong and I apologize for it. But the people I'm castigating here as tighty-righties do this, not as an aberration but as their entire modus operandi, and it's tedious as hell to deal with and its dishonesty is exhausting. I thank those of you who strive to do this as rarely as possible, and who argue, from whatever position, with a goal of explaining why you think as you do and of understanding why others take the position they do.
Indeed, sir, I quite agree with your post, and I should like to subscribe to your periodical. More tea?Quote:

And hey, from their perspective, we don't *have* to be reading this thread. Plus, they can do whatever the hell they want to as long as they don't get banned.
"Free country" arguments aside, it's still tedious and childish no matter who starts it, and the hell of it is that the people involved have way too much ego dedicated to always coming back with something clever (or just petty) to just ... stop.
I enjoy discussion. I enjoy a good rant. I enjoy tit-for-tats and such.
But going back-and-forth because it's the status quo is just tiresome. And having it infect an innocent thread is even more tiresome.
I've called out folks on both sides for being idiots. Course, I doubt that I'm a "popular" poster - I used to be pretty prolific, but have really slacked off of posting in the past couple of years. The Iraq invasion really did it - I got really very tired of being called a terrorist sympathizer and traitor. (Of course now they don't get to say 'fuck you, cunt' to me, I'll sleep better).
I'm willing to let folks re-invent themselves here. Hell, I'd even give old Milosarrian a pass (I think he stopped posting right after he posted a "Saddam's shooting those WMD's he didn't have at us" thread, where within a few posts it was clear that, well, he was wrong.)
