A few things:

1) The way Scylla talks about how his daughter is beautiful is indistinguishable from the way my father has talked about my sisters since I can remember.

Note that he says she is beautiful, not hot. Beautiful and hot carry different connotations. Beautiful has a purity to it that hot does not. A baby can be beautiful, but a baby is not hot unless you are a pedophile or there's an infection.

2) Assuming for the moment that Scylla does not just remember that episode the way he feels like remembering it, and he did not just decide that the kid was, at 7, a predator (it does happen, and in ways that would make his account look pretty pedestrian), I can see situations where Scylla's reaction is justified.

IFF (if and only if) he knows he's dealing with someone who is physically 7 but older mentally.

And I don't see evidence for that in the story.

However.

That thread looks like it was tailor-made for someone to walk in and be very protective of his kids. And while I well understand how many people might feel horrified by that protection and how Scylla expressed it, ... if it keeps his kids safe and stable and he raises them to trust people -- but to be careful and to make educated decisions -- that's not something I'm interested in criticizing.

And in the interest of full disclosure:

Damn fucking right I'd have had no problem with my father telling them and their parents and anyone else interested in listening that if they ever did that again, they wouldn't get their hands back.

And the list of similar experiences, with me and with people I know, is longer than that. This is why the list of contact information that goes out to my (very) extended family every year generally has almost nothing about me. Most of those monsters are still alive.[/spoiler:3j7784b8]

Two quick points.

1-Ever since the day Sir Ed rode into The Pit and started the whole "non-Pit, pit thread" nonsense I started losing interest in the SDMB. GD and The Pit are normally the two only forums I visited on a regular basis, but once I saw that and knowing beforehand that getting "into the mix" with TPTB is an exercise in futility (and rather masochistic as well), I figured I had enough Crazy to deal with in my own life...so I was letting go of the place bit by bit. Then, this happened. Fits my needs to a "T" and I really couldn't give a damn what the latest clusterfuck in that place is.

Sincerely doubt they can piece it back together again.

2-Scylla. We had more than our share of ups and downs during which I think we pretty much used-up every insult know to man...and then some. I mean "butthurt" and "knife fights" were akin to saying "hello" to each other and it only went downhilll from there. Having said that, I just don't have it me to hold unto a grudge (and a pixelated one at that) to the point were it becomes a fixation. So, somewhere there in time, we sort of parted our own ways with -- at least on my part -- a measure of respect. So that's dead and gone.

However, I'll just say that even though I didn't participate (mostly because I think the ceasefire would have blown-up sky high again and its simply tedious) the thread where he spoke of his daughter and how he treats her. That left me...well, stunned doesn't even begin to tell the story. Seriously, I think Cavemen come off looking good by comparison; just too fuckin' bizarre.

Just hope the little girl turns out great anyway.

As to Ed's so-called 'apology', it's fake.

Yesterday he closed a Pit thread citing a naughty word. In his 'apology' he said he went ahead with his agenda against warnings not to, saw that he messed up, conceded everyone was right and he was wrong, and that he's sorry. But he still hasn't rescinded his naughty-word rule. Staff are still immune from criticism.

He lied. He's not sorry at all for his actions. He's sad people hate him, is all. It just points to the overall problem that staff are not listening to customers and that communication and understanding are as poor as ever. Until actions back up his words, he's nothing more than a mealy-mouthed con artist, speaking out of his anal orifice.

SDMB is driven by content, and content is provided by posters. I've noticed in the past couple of days that there is less content that attracts my attention. I don't want SDMB to fail. It's been a valuable resource over the years. But with so many of the people who made it a valuable resource leaving, having left, or posting there less, its value has lessened.

Maybe they should make another forum. They could call it The Disney Pit, where the new Pit rules apply; and The BBQ Pit can return to what it was. (I should live so long!) See which one gets more traffic.

Right now I'm thinking Zotti could be the next Republican Presidential candidate. He certainly knows how to 'stay the course'.

Matter of fact, I'd love it if people would take the opportunity of a fresh start here to get past some of the entrenched us vs. them sniping that's stifled a lot of political arguments at the Dope. Shodan, for example -- just to pick one from Column A, and yes, I know there are choices enough to be had from Column B -- if Shodan could argue things out more, and do snarky one-liner put-downs less, I for one would pay more attention to his posts. I'd probably still wholeheartedly disagree with them, mind you, but I'd at least listen instead of gliding past them. And I mean that sincerely, not as a put-down of Shodan. There's an intelligent (if woefully misguided ;)) person under the snark, but too often the snark is all that he offers.

And yes, there are posters on the left to whom the same applies.

Something above reminded me of what is surely the ultimate cause of all this grief - money.

As Fast Eddie has said repeatedly, he now owns a piece of the action. His corporate overlords made it possible for him to make money off of the SDMB, and that must be what is driving most of his constant tinkering. Remember when you never saw the guy around the place except for the occasional official pronouncement? Money has made a Babbitt out of Ed Zotti. Sad.

The above seems pretty inarticulate. Perhaps someone else will take up the matter.
