The previews make me think of the wretched King Arthur movie with Keira Knightley and Clive Owen.

Despite my admiration of Keira K., I actually haven't seen King Arthur yet, so I couldn't say. Maid Marian isn't a maid in Robin Hood, either; she's already married by the time Robin meets her, but... sparks fly, let's just leave it at that. Cate Blanchett does not look her best - almost haggard, I'm sorry to say. Marian is also not especially warlike, but neither is she a shy, demure and helpless damsel.
Yes, I'd say it felt like Robin Hood, all in all. There were a lot of things wrong with the movie, but some good stuff too, IMHO. You could easily wait to see it on DVD; there's nothing about it that absolutely must be seen on the big screen. As terrible as Robin's accent in the Costner movie was, though, that was a much more fun movie than this.
Based on the description I will wait for Netflix.
D&D for people who just don't otherwise have the time: http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/wayof...ex.html?hpt=C2
I'm pretty active in the RPGA, and this program is a spin-off from the RPGA. They just started it a couple of months ago, and from what I can see, it's been pretty darned popular. They just concluded the first "season", with the second "season" starting tomorrow.
I'm going to be out of contact or nearly so for about a week-- don't wait up for me.
I'm going to be fairly absent for the next 4 days, so go find stuff and a) loot it, b) kill it, c) kill it some more
Then can we paint it?
Y'know, stuff. Like CatInASuit said.
I'm preparing a "Star Trek" RPG for here on Mellophant, along the lines of What Exit?'s LOTR D&D campaign. The rules would be a mishmash of FASA and other ST game rules for easy, seamless play. Players would be newly-assigned junior officers aboard a Starfleet ship. The Captain and First Officer would be NPCs, at least to start.
Once I establish a setup thread I'll get everyone's feedback as to which era of ST the game should be set in, and the kinds of adventures you'd like to have. More details to follow.
Interested in playing? Send me a PM. No salesman will come to your door.
I'll get a PM out eventually but I would hope for the age of adventure when Men were real Men and Women were Real Women and Vulcans were real Pointy Eared Carbon Based Computational Devices.
Also I would love to play a Chief Engineer that for no sound military reason finds himself often on away missions. I would settle for a bridge officer though.
So you folks know, I'll be out of touch for most of next week, as I'm going to Origins (a big gaming convention in Columbus, OH), where I'll be playing far too much D&D.
I'll be leaving on Tuesday morning (22nd), and not back until Sunday evening (27th). In my absence, feel free to stick Ceol in front so he can smite more evil! :D
Have a good time, kenobi! Hack and slash with great abandon.
Ditto. Though, due to the girlfriend having law school class Wednesday night, we won't be leaving until Thursday morning.
And then we come back late Saturday night since we're flying out to Bangalore, India for the wedding of mutual friends Sunday afternoon. So expect me to be largely out of commission from Thursday until July 6th or so.
Hey guys, I'm going to be moving for the next few days, and my next regular internet access will probably be Friday or Saturday. Soldier on! :hist:
On that note, I'm going to be in Ecuador for a month starting tomorrow. Best of luck with these spiders!
Not regularly enough to play. I'll call it a win if I can check in twice.
Have fun and good luck Appleciders.
Also Happy 4th of July for my fellow Americans.
Same to you! I'm now in Vermont with my wife and her family. There'll be a parade, cookout and fireworks here to mark the USA's 234th birthday tomorrow. Huzzah!
Sorry for not being around, a week off will do that. Now where are we...
I'm back, and all caught up.
Well I need some players to step up and do things. Are we sending the Hobbit or the Elf or some other plan?
Come on, everybody loves flying invisible hobbits.....
Yeah, but I hate it when they drop crumbs of lembas in my hair.
A ¼" strand of spider silk is off course quite silly but it would also be remarkably strong and tough if possible.Quote:

Checking in with what I think is the first post from south of the Equator. I´ll try to check in again in less than two weeks.
ETA: And I always preferred skyhook to beanstalk, but either way...

I am the forum leader for this forum. So I am not a mod but have some extra editing and merging powers.
CatInASuit and Zuul are both Board Admins so they have far more powers and I believe their edits are invisible. At least that is how it worked when I was the board admin.
Everyone has between 10-20 minutes to edit their own posts though.
BTW: There is a whole board outside this forum and you are most welcome to post to it or wander over to our chat area (listed as Chate! I believe). There has been a long running weekly Star Trek TOS episode by episode discussion in the Arts and Entertainment forum. Look for it, you might enjoy them. Feel free to bump any old thread, we have no Zombie Thread rules.
There are often Tolkien questions in the A&E forum too. Lots of movie discussions of course.
Incidentally, Tolkien fans will want to see Reclaiming the Blade, a pretty good documentary about swords in history and the movies, with quite a bit about how the LOTR movie swords were made, the training the actors underwent, as well as brief interviews with Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Karl Urban (Eomer), artist John Howe and various Weta craftsmen.

PLAYERS: You need to bump the game along a bit. I think we might need a role-call. I fear we have lost most of the players at this point.
If it is just a handful left, I will try to accelerate the game based on the 4-5 players still playing and get it moving again.
I'm here, just a little busy over the last week or so.
I'm back in the country and I'll post regularly again now.
Cool, did you have fun?
I've decided the game needed to be pushed into a faster gear. Thus the hawk and today's suggestion.
I did. It's a pretty country and I got to eat a lot of local food, which is half the point of travel, anyway.
I'll be out of town at GenCon starting tomorrow. So I probably won't be back to the game thread until Monday.
A Brandybuck and a Fox? Believe it!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U
My apologies to all; real life got rather crazy for the past few weeks. But, it's all good, and I'm back. Will strive to check in at least once a day.
For the record, I didn't prepare a Knock this morning. That came off a scroll that I purchased ages ago.
I'll be away for two weeks starting Saturday - off to sunny France (or so we hope).
Cool have fun and hope you get your sunshine.
Not to metagame too much, but if What Exit has let on that he wants to hurry this mission up- is that why the towers are barred?
Well you know, checking each house and tower takes forever in this format I discovered and after all the big evil is up in the big tower.
An inspirational graph: http://graphjam.com/2008/04/25/song-...emes-this-day/
Is there something else you need to update?
Sorry, I was off running a festival the last few days. I'll make an update to the thread in a little bit.
"...Then a heavy copper pot flies out the window towards Gilraen but Thoroncir was ready and takes the blow on his shield...."
What, the bad guys were all out of palantirs? ;)
I won't be around much for much of next week. But I will try to check in and update at least once per day as needed.
BTW: When the Healer is poisoned check your characters for Sweet Water potions. They neutralize poison.
Entertainment Weekly's August 13 cover issue, on how MGM's monetary and management woes are endangering the next James Bond movie, includes a sidebar headlined "Other projects in danger":
New Zealand's Hobbit [S]hire should be buzzing with life. But with Guillermo del Toro having bailed at the end of May and Peter Jackson still not confirming whether he'll direct, the location sits empty. MGM and its partner, Warner Bros./New Line, are trying to sort out the issues.
It appears that Drindoleth will shortly be taken over by ds9writer at least for the short term. It will give him a chance to learn the game and the party and decide if he wants to keep running the Druid and/or add his own character.
Drindoleth is the Beorning Druid that rode in on a giant hound.
Happy birthday, What Exit?, and many happy returns!
This is in answer to a question for ds9writer.
Worth Noting: The tougher the armor, usually the worse the penetration but the Heavy Lance is an example of a weapon great at penetrating tough armors and hides. Daggers are easily stopped by the heavier armors.
N = No armor
K = Padded or Thick Hide or Think Fur
J = Leather
I = Studded Leather
H = Ring Mail
G = Scale Mail
F = Chain Mail, Elf/Dwarf Chain
E = Splint
D = Banded
C = Plate Mail
B = Plate Armor or Dwarven Plate or Troll Skill, Ents and the Barkskin Spell.
A = Maxmillion Plate or Dwarven Plate Armor
AA = Dragon
The Damage area is S-M for damage vs. Small and Man-Sized creatures.
L is Large. Generally 8' tall humanoids or horse size and up.
Speed Factor: The Lower the better, works off initiative roll.
ROF is Rate of Fire and means number of chances to hit with weapon per round or missiles fired
Fum%: Is the weapons base fumble percent. I have a range of modifiers I handle but this is the starting point. Dexterity and Strength plays into this, increases with two weapon use, decreases with specializations in a weapon. Usually magic weapons fumble less on a 5% reduction per +1. Etc.
Ranges: PB= Point Blank, for some missile weapons a +2 to hit is gained and on a natural 18-19 damage is increased by 50%.
S= Short, so for an Elven Bow any shot up to 70 yards is made without penalty. M=Medium and a -2 to hit. L=Long and -5 to hit. X= Extreme and -8 to hit. O=Outrageous and is generally 2x Extreme and -12 to hit. Strong Bows add to range based on Damage bonus, so a really strong Strong Long Bow user with great skill/level could hit a target 900 yards away. This requires a 18:00 strength though. The -12 makes this very tough for most. Legolas appears to have some spectacular ability with the bow and his ranges appeared to be this great. For game purposes I have it as skill and strength for him and that the Lothlórien Bow he was given was a Strong Elven Bow and he had great pull.
ds9writer will be taking over Gwaelur while he gets a hang for the game and decides what character he wants. I'll check with NAF1138 and verify if he is coming back.
I know we lost eleanorigby and thus Prestolwen will leave the group when this adventure closes out.
I think we lost Koldanar and thus Redward the Warrior Cleric. But I am not sure.
AndrewRyan is gone altogether and thus Drinoleth will be gone. I will probably run either him or Ghân as an NPC. I will also check with Glee again to see if he is interested in joining back up in the game.
OneCentStamp is still around but life is preoccupying him. Hopefully he lets us know if he will be rejoining us. His character is Theogrim.
This leaves us with 7 active players still and ds9writer joining us. That is plenty.
I am leaning towards wrapping up this southern campaign with one more adventure and heading back north, but I am not locked into this. The party can head back after this or keep exploring the south. I don't have a set timetable, but the Kkosal subplot needs to be continued eventually.
Greetings! I'm glad to be here in Middle Earth with all of you. Please be patient w/ me as I learn the inner workings of the game. Tolkien lore I'm good at - but new to this kind of thing...
EHC
ds9writer
Welcome aboard, ds9writer! Folks, he and I go 'way back. He's a good guy and will do well, I'm sure.
I've decided the hardest thing about this game format is keeping track of the date and time. For my tabletop games I keep a running log that lets me track time. I'm almost thinking I need to duplicate that online. Maybe as it's own thread.
If anyone knows the last time we determined Date & Time let me know. It is not that much later.
It's just after midnight here. ;-)
Welcome ds9writer, have fun in the game.
What Exit? - I have no idea what the current time line is. Other than time it is either time for breakfast, brunch, elevensies, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, tea, dinner, supper, bedtime snack, midnight snack.
Time Line has been completed for this adventure and dates changed as needed in the game thread.
Middle Earth Role playing Game FA 63 & 64 Player Timeline Project.
Welcome, ds9writer!
Thank you for the kind welcome, one and all!
Happy Hobbit Day
BTW: That is a wiki page I started probably around 2003. It has since been edited beyond recognition but I am happy it is still there. The History does not seem to show the earliest versions though. I think the page I started was actually deleted at one point.
I'd never heard of Hobbit Day before. Thanks, What Exit?!
I'm going to be out of town the next few days and posting intermittently.
Still on vacation. Everyone else is finally asleep tonight, so I got a chance to catch up.
Ithilneth will obviously stick with the group. She'll use her protection from evil spells when we're starting to get in trouble or if we're facing the big it at the top. Also, a light spell if that seems helpful. Otherwise, she sticks to her bow until it's not useful and then goes into melee.
On Wednesday I start the on-the-road portion of my new job. Since we're doing 5 cities a week, I have no way to tell in advance when I'll have internet and when I won't. I think that I'll be able to post regularly, but it's really too early to tell. Please move the plot ahead without me if it's necessary.
Happy birthday, ds9writer (one day late)!
My son is going as Gimli for Trick or Treating. So I am making him a Two-Headed axe from Styrofoam, and old cue stick and some scrap leather. I cut a thong for the end of the handle from the leather.
I want the inscription to be as authentic as possible so after realizing the online Angerthas translations were crap and limited I broke out the read book and ensured I used the Moria version with the Erebor variant.
Khazâd ai-Menû “The Dwarves are upon you”
Baruk Khazâd “The Axes of the Dwarves”
I will post a picture of the finished project later this week.
By the way if you did not know, the propellant in spray paint melts Styrofoam quite a bit. I have two funky looking axe heads to go with the successful ones. They would work well for one of the Deadfrom the Paths of the Dead I guess.
Here is Gimli's Axe
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../GimlisAxe.jpg
And here is Gimli:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...eens/Gimli.jpg
Cute! I love it.
Cute? CUTE? Nay, 'tis awesome! Durin the Deathless himself would smile with pride to see such a stalwart young lad. May his axe stay sharp and his beard lustrous.
Well done, What Exit?!
I so want to say in regards to the Necromancer:
"Let's show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown!"
...but something tells me it doesn't quite fit the genre.
Good instinct.
For ds9writer: Until and unless NAF1138 returns I would be happy to have you continue with Gwaelur. Did you note your Helm? It is quite useful 1 per day versus undead. Though Gilraen and some others can recharge it for you.
I was wondering if you have enough of a feel for this game and or the desire to create your own character?
Also any other questions? Any requests?
I've included all of the active party member for potential input into what the party needs.
Drindoleth the Druid, Prestolwen Half Elf, Redward the War Priest (cleric) will all be leaving.
Theogrim might be leaving. I hope OneCentStamp lets me know.
Sala will probably be leaving. Not as sure.
We won't have a Druid. But I might bring Ghan back as an NPC. Let me know.
Please if you want to go some direction with your characters or just don't like where it is headed so far let me know.
Pleonast, were you going to use your spells?
Also back to war and then back to the north or back to war and more exploration in the gray areas of the map?
PM List: ds9writer; Elendil's Heir; NAF1138; Malacandra; CatInASuit; OneCentStamp; Appleciders; OneCentStamp ; Hoopy Frood ; Pleonast ; kenobi65
Sorry we'll be losing so many players. Perhaps we might ask glee if he'd like to resume playing Ghan? It'd be great to have him back.
:smack I have Feather Fall! We can go down the easy way.
In my defense, my brain is still somewhat muddled by jetlag.
No strong preference for me.Quote:
Also back to war and then back to the north or back to war and more exploration in the gray areas of the map?
I think glee is over here on Mellophant now, and not on the Dope, but I may be wrong.
I also have no strong preference as to our next adventure. Whatever the DM thinks best (although Thoroncir would like to try his hand at jousting in a big tournament someday, as you know....)
I'm going to be awkward and say that losing a few players is not necessarily a bad thing. The group was getting slightly unwieldy, just from waiting for everyone to reply, though I will be sorry to see players and their characters leave.
My preference will be to continue the Khosal quest that was set up before we came south.
CIAS, I agree and thus I am not recruiting new players. Especially as DS9writer has already joined and I believe we have one more joining soon.
On the Khósal quest, I as the ref am honestly trying to get the party more powerful for it first. So this is all building towards it and even this adventure tied into it indirectly. You are becoming a very strong fighting force vs. Undead in particular. Hopefully a realization is made that the archers need to acquire a good supply of magic arrows or to some degree Blessed vs. Undead.
Apparently we didn't take out just any old king of the undead, we took out one of these.
Incidentally, I just saw the Coen Brothers' darkly comic kidnapping-for-hire masterpiece Fargo over the weekend. The car mechanic who gives Jerry Lundegaard the name of an underworld contact is named Shep Proudfoot.
Players, a question for next adventure.
Here is my idea. Have the party lay over in the Port Hatha area for months that we will blow through in a summary. The party will be busy together and separate on many missions and helping to subdue towns, villages and small armies and even some Naval Action again. Then they will head off to a special mission even further to the south.
Would this piece of time passing swiftly between adventures be OK? I already know what the hooks are and part of this is for this party and my table top group to fight in the same action though not together most of the time.
That sounds fine to me. I'm sure it will be interesting for the characters regardless
Gil-Gandel carries the +5 Elven Long Sword that gives +5 saves vs. spells & magic attacks
Ithilneth carries the Elven Short Sword: +3 and does double vs. intelligent undead and may strike incorporeal evil spirits. Special enchantment vs. Ringwraiths effectively doing x3 damage and warding against their fear and The Elfstone: Allows Elven Mages to cast at +1 level of effectiveness and would make an excellent set-piece for a Mage’s staff or the equivalent. It might go into a Ring, set into a necklace, attached to a hilt or even a bow as examples. Nearly all Wizards will eventually make a totem type item that they partially imbue with their own magic and tie to themselves alone. For humans it is typically a staff and occasionally a rod or wand. For Elves it is often far more varying, particularly a primary weapon.
Prestolwen carries the Elven Short Sword: A +3 sword weapon
Mulligan: carries 10 gems of odd cuts with Skull etchings: Ancient human works of the south. They are easily enspelled and receptive to magic. Work natively as a +2 sling stone but many spells could work with them. For instance, one stone has taken on the Bless in an odd way and will be an additional +1 to hit and damage and double that for undead. It appears a magic missile spell could store in the stones for excellent effects; one missile per stone and gives the stone a +5 to hit and an extra D4+1damage. The stones will store the spells for level of caster/level of spell days. So a 3rd level spell from a 9th level mage would store 3 days. A 4th would last 2 days and 6 hours. Warning, a fireball or lightning bolt would store but the stone would probably not survive the use. Only one spell at a time of course. In summary, 4 stones are blessed, 4 have magic missile and 1 has a dispel magic.
Rorimac’s Minor Ring of Power: A silver ring on its left ring finger. The ring has a series of golden runes on it. Tengwar of Fëanor in fact. The Tengwar lettering spells out BELETHIL for those that can read them. Rorimac notes it actually feels, well, Good.
“Let it light your way against the dark and help you against the undead. Never fear those that will drain your life away. I also believe that you will now be able to understand all languages of Humans and Elves and maybe a few other creatures too. Tarry not long now for this building is no longer stable with the old spells broken.”
Minor Evil Ring of Power from Old Hatha’s Chief Wraith. There is a Ring on the ground where the Wraith was but Ceol says this is evil.
Metal Strongbox: "This box weighs far less than even the metal of the strongbox itself should weigh." Magic is slowly fading though.
Two scimitars and a mace are magical. There are also 5 arrows in a quiver of 20. The other 15 are silver tipped and finely made. The none magic weapons would probably fetch a fair price but would be hard to carry out. Do you try to gather them up or select a few of the best? Who takes the magic ones? "Let's see what we can get quickly from these weapons. Small silver or jewelled, keep. Large Jewelled, strip down. Large silver discard." Mulligan gets everyone to work who can. "While we do this, I would check the lower floors to save a bit of time."
Found here of magic is a fair horde. 7 magic stones, 3 crossbow bolts, 26 arrows of various types, 1 knife, 2 short swords, 1 long sword, 3 scimitars, a bastard sword, a golden belt free of tarnish, a pair of finely made leather boots. Of treasure there appears to be hundreds of coins without taint of evil or magic.
Retrieve the giant magic sword? 9’ long
Deor discovers via the Identify Spell the troll sword is a +3 weapon and is does a mild poison to humans, orcs, Elves and Hobbits. The poison would be 10 pts or 5 on a save except for Hobbits where it is 6 points or 3 on a save.
Rorimac used two potions of Heroism.
Bitur a Sweet Water
Sala lost a level
4 radiate magic, a flail, a scimitar, a long sword and a dagger. 3 are rust free and but the flail is rusty looking. There is also another clean long sword; it appears to be made of silver. Gilraen senses there is something very odd about this sword. It should not be handled lightly. But it does not radiate magic.
The Long Sword is a +2 Long that also has the ability glow like a torch at will.
The Dagger is only +1 but also can seal a wound once per day, cleansing it and healing a d6+6 hit points.
None of the magic weapons are familiar to the Dwarves or Thoroncir. Gil-Gandel recognizes the Scimitar as being an unusual design and not like the typical orc or Corsair style. The silver sword however reminds Gil-Gandel of an old legend he heard.
“There was once a brave hero, a Númenórean that had very strong sword of silver. This man was very powerful but the bloodlust was strong on him. He was nearly reckless in battle and sought battle. As the years went on it was said none could face him. He slew a foul Ringwraith once though of course the Ringwraith was only disembodied. He assaulted an enemy ship once and half the enemy jumped over board to flee his coming and the other half died on his sword. He never let a foe live and would gladly go for hours ensure all down on the field were really dead. It was also said it was dangerous to fight near him. He often struck friends in his frenzy and the bleeding was both tough to stop. The sword itself was said to give him great strength and almost sing in battle. At times it would blaze. Finally one day he went too far, he was lured by a large number of goblins that died by the dozens but 40 tall orcs stood ready to bow him down and slew him. Even then he got a final revenge. Or at least his sword did. The largest orc went to grab the sword and the sword exploded killing this chief and several others nearby. Where once there was a single sword there were now 7 swords and daggers of various sizes but most of the orcs would not go near them and took off running. Two smaller ones stayed behind and one grabbed a short sword and immediately died. The other then took off and spread this part of the tale.”
Likewise. Thanks, What Exit!
It's official - Peter Jackson will be directing the two Hobbit movies: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=582015
Whoa - watch out for Bill Gates (an oldie but a goodie from The Onion): http://www.theonion.com/articles/bil...-charisma,837/
Just imagine the magical loot he must have.
[Comic Book Store Guy]Clearly silly as even those experience points would not produce that number of hit points.
Who wrote that article, someone that watched one very old Tom Hanks movie, I mean everyone knows it is Monty Hall DM and not Santa Claus DM.
Bilbo is clearly not the name of a Half-Elf.
Worst Article Evah! [/CBSG]
Out of character: That article is old, "one terabyte of information" now is like Dr. Evil asking for "One Million Dollars" in Austin Powers.
Some fun references in that one.
I'm good for the mission mentioned above... can I keep my character?
Yes, Gwaelur is yours at this point. but if NAF1138 returns it might not be for the long haul. He is at least months away I think though.
ill in hospital out of danger story follows =doug=
I hope you get out healthy and soon. Thank you for checking in, very cool.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the game I will make a few assumptions to allow us to move on but let Malacandra retroactively change things if he does not agree. This is hardly a critical timing issue anyway.

Oh, my! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Likewise! Take care and get better, Malacandra. We'd be lost without our gallant and multitalented Elf-captain.
Please see and respond to Magic Item and Gold splitting
Updates on Characters:
Sala: 6th level, Not close to making next level had lost a level
Drindoleth: 7th, close to 8th, with Role Playing should do better. Only made 15k on this adventure.
Gwaeluer: 7th not close to 8th, with Role Playing should do better made 20k last adventure.
Bitur: 7th, made level and excellent role playing. Made 27K
Thoroncir: 7th & getting close, got 32k with big role playing bonus.
Gil-Gandel: 5th, made 2 levels and will make 6th quickly. Bard's table is very easy. Excellent role-playing as usual. Bonuses for songs of course. I was uneasy about giving 2 levels but earned I think.
Ithilneth: 5th but close now. Got 25K. Elfstone was a big boost. Need to step up the role playing and spell casting. We need to resolve what spells you pick up from Deor. Should be plenty as lots of cash spent.
Rorimac: Still 6th but very close, Picked up a big 43,900xp. Role Play is excellent and of course the big dramatic Moment of Awesome helped.
Mulligan: 8th & getting close: Picked up 25k. New items should expand role playing even more.
Deor: made 8th!: Picked up 26k. Need to remember Wand of Burning Hands, this gives you a weapon to use almost at will. You would have it fully recharged in the upcoming light period of months. New spell totals: Spells: 4,3,3,2 Cantrips: 11 Please see the new spells picked up via scrolls. You'll need to add these too your book. Good Role Playing and marshaling of spell points.
Ceol: made 6th, picked up only 22k. The adventure did not seem to favor you. Picking up the Role Playing can only help of course. You got a fairly complete weapons upgrade at least. What part of the monetary reward are you tithing, I think you mentioned it but I forget how much.
Thanks, What Exit? No complaints here. How did Gilraen do?
My avatar will be back to normal by November 1st. I can find something less creepy for Halloween if it's too distracting, though.
It just caught my eye, is all. I'm sure I'd get used to it. Don't mind me.
I must say, though, that I prefer teh Halloween kitteh.
Yes, I think I'll stick with this one for a while. :D
Hi guys, I am now back at home on my own computer - the previous message was on a hospital multi-function overhead screen and while browsing ability was useful, typing was painfully slow as there was only a touch-screen keyboard on which I could manage maybe 6wpm. Anyway:
A week ago I didn't know there was any such disease as cellulitis, but I have had my ignorance forcefully corrected. Thanks to what the non-believers among us will call random chance (and they have my leave and blessing), I got medical attention just as things were getting to the septicaemia stage. There are any number of possible alternate histories for last Sunday in which I wouldn't have got it until hours later, maybe even the next day. As it was, I got away with just an emergency dose of antibiotics in the waiting-room where I'd collapsed and a quick trip to hospital. My wife assured my children that Daddy wasn't in danger as otherwise the blue lights would have been on.
At the age of fifty I have experienced my first visit to an ER (barring getting my head kicked playing rugby, but I was able to take myself to hospital for that and sit patiently in the waiting room until they could pop in half a dozen stitches), my first IV drip, by no means my first blood test but more in a short space of time than in my life before, and my first stay in hospital. They put me on Clarithromycin, which is a powerful antibiotic but not as good as penicillin which unfortunately would only have made me sicker. Then it was a case of keeping me under observation until my general condition improved and the infection began to visibly give ground. The former happened quickly, the latter... there were times I thought it was never going to happen.
Yesterday I was well enough to come home with another week's supply of the wonder drug (I've read the leaflet and I'm on the "for serious cases only" dosage, no surprise there) and I'm not too uncomfortable right now. I'll be a little feverish for a bit, but nothing that can't be dealt with using paracetamol, staying lightly dressed and not snuggling up under the duvet. The leg (infected from left knee to ankle) will at its best do almost anything for me except stand still or allow me to sit normally - it needs to be hip height or higher and would prefer to be higher than my heart, but when I'm walking the calf muscles help to pump out some of the fluid, I guess, and it's hardly painful at all.
I've not been spending a lot of time feeling sorry for myself as I have seen plenty sicker people than me - even on the ward where I was, in our six-man unit I was pretty much the wellest, and I did all I could to keep myself mobile and care for myself. Fortunately I'm generally strong and very flexible for my age and weight, but it would have made you laugh to see me working my way around a disabled toilet and shower. I quickly came up with creative ways to keep my left leg elevated while locking the door, readying the toilet for use, preparing two seats for the shower (one to sit on, one as a leg-rest) and then packing everything away, making ready to open the door and go. Once walking, the brisker the better, the leg quickly settled down even when the infection was still severe, but a slow start was worse than useless, which is why I was glad to come off the drip as I couldn't drag a drip-stand after me quickly enough to get started.
Still, things could have been worse.
It's been an experience - one that's allowed precious little sleep but has let me witness a lot of people who had it worse than I. And also one total scumbag whom I'll Pit over at the Dope when I get around to it, but that's another story. Glad to be back, folks, and I'll catch up with game events asap.
Oh - and if you look up cellulitis on Wikipedia, the pictures are of a mild case. :smug:
I have a good friend, close to you in age that has been hospitalized with cellulitis three times now. Please take care of yourself and follow the Doctor's orders. He didn't and still doesn't. I understand from my sisters (both nurses) if you follow the Doctor's directions it should not recur.
I'm glad you're feeling better. It is never good to be in the hospital. At least my stays were only for Kidney Stones. Horrible pain but no long term effects.
In the post listed for Gilraen she did not do well yet but ...
"Gilraen: Looked for stuff to aid healing but found nothing. Word is given though that an Item will be sent for her from the main army."
So who knows, but we know she has pretty good connections.
Yikes, Malacandra, that's quite a story. So sorry. Hope you've turned a corner and that you'll steadily and fully recover!
What Exit?, thanks, but I meant, how did Gilraen do level-wise?
Geez, Malacandra. That sounds really unpleasant. I hope you recover fully and quickly and never have to go through that again.
That's my girl!
So there was a suggestion in the game thread that Deor should teach Ithilneth a number of spells. As a player, I'm happy to do so, but IIRC, in this game-world mages are supposed to jealously guard their spells for fear that other wizards might learn to counter them. Wouldn't it be out of character for Deor to do so?
Ithilneth paid Deor in Gold and Gems that Deor needed. Also she is a companion. By charging you have honored the covenant if you will.
You and me both, dear heart. If ever you find yourself with a mysterious non-itchy red rash that seems deep, accompanied by hot spells and cold shivers, get thee to a doctor within minutes if possible, hours if not, but don't do what I did: think on Saturday morning "I'll go into surgery on Monday morning".
Meanwhile, the normally benign Gil-Gandel waxes wrathful (warning: cross-board link).
I previewed the future but there is still time to resolve the 7 months of duty had Port Hatha.
As I mentioned in a PM to What Exit?, I have some thoughts about a scene with Thoroncir talking to Prince Eldarion about, well, you know, and hope to post something in the next few days.
Oh, I wonder what that could be about. :D
The World Series. Duh.
Is there a reason the 8th adventure thread is locked? I'm ready to keep moving.
And by the way, is the party moving south with us your tabletop group?
It is a Preview only. We still have a little record keeping and final touches to do on Adventure #7. I think I put that in one of the PMs I sent out today.
Elendil's Heir has in fact provided me a nice long list of edits to complete to my hastily assembled Op and I need to figure out what else will be up front information.
Indeed, Meriadoc's Party is the table top group. They started before you and have accomplished a bit more and are thus about 2-3 levels higher than this party. You will interact and be in at least one battle with them and then spread out for various missions. This is the second time the parties have worked together now and this time it will be closer but only briefly. Like your party, their party has changed a bit over the last few years. The recently lost their leader and for the purpose of this mission there are many reason why Meriadoc is considered their leader. Normally he had been more of an elder and respected adviser and voice of reason. Oddly he is adventuring as the Druid gave him a longevity potion and then found him a second one eventually. What is odder, is he is the one non Tolkien fan in the group. He only knows the movies and only recently read a few chapters of the Hobbit for insight into Beorn.
Sounds cool. We worked together well last time at Goblin Gate, although briefly, and I have no reason to doubt we can again. Thanks, What Exit?
Hope you're feeling fully recovered, Malacandra!
Sorry. Was busy pretty much Friday through Sunday and haven't checked into the boards until now.
I'll get a post in the game thread tomorrow evening.
Get well soon Malacandra.
And we hope the sawbones can do something about that stutter....
:: grin ::
Oh good, the new adventure looks as though Mulligan finally gets to use her theives skills in a less-than-perhaps-honest manner.
The 7th adventure is still open. There is a major but side bit of story posted by Elendil's Heir. I have now opened the 8th adventure though and will place the party at the southern city.
I will try to upload the maps of both Raj and the great port city of Bozisha-Dar.
Three questions: Deor stated a desire to learn his first Shapeshift form- that of a red-tailed hawk. How did that go?
Second, Mirëgol offered Tongues- what level is that spell? I know it's 3rd in later editions, so I'll post a spell list with that in mind.
Third- why is this city so willing to allow such a force of Northern soldiers to dock? I understand emissaries and traders, and a small force to protect them, but this is a reasonable small army.
1) With my apologies, Deor can learn Shapeshift to Red-tailed hawk. I will assume you had some help from Drindoleth.
2) Suggested, did not offer. But in game she might be willing to trade. I thought you had the spell.
3) Good question and one I only hinted at for the answer. As of the day you landed, war is underway. A Strange Civil War between the large and powerful Necromancers' School and the King of Raj amd his trusted Wizards and men. King Elessar is assisting the King of Raj as it is pretty clear cut the favoring a merchant King over Necromancers is a good move. The Necromancers are in league with the illegal Cult of Morgoth and probably assassins. The King of Raj is in need of help and also in favor of Alliance over war with the North.
Ah, so I do. Nevermind, then.
Incidentally, the current double issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine (Oct. 22/29), with Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson on the cover for Back to the Future, has a reunion theme. On pp. 60-67 are photos of most of the Lord of the Rings cast today, some short interviews, and a sidebar on the Hobbit movies.
OK, I'm confused- we've landed just outside of Bozisha-Dar, so that we can ride in. Are we lodging within the palace in the city? Are we meeting the Elendil within the city and lodging there? Where does Deor need to focus on getting his valuables safely to, and how safe should he expect the party's base of operations with the city to be? And is the Elendil staying here in Bozisha-Dar, or heading directly back to Gondor?
The party will be put up at the Illusionist school overnight (Visi Hall). It will be leaving in the morning. The Elendil will probably pull back out of port rather than risk staying tied up overnight. One key problem was offloading the horses at dock is difficult and by going to a beach area the main ramp could be used. The day at the dock allows for some flag waving diplomacy and good will and a chance to take on supplies and spread some gold and silver around Bozisha-Dar.
Overall the Elendil will probably stay in the area and await the arrival of the main fleet.
I will eventually work all of this into the main thread to. Sorry for the lapse. This landing at least played out in my mind but was never put to type for the game. I don't plan on a game thread post until Monday so I'll pop specific quick answers in here and then include the answers into the game thread as needed.
I see you got the Wizard's Staff Doc. As to Role Playing it, Deor should be on the look out for ingredients for the future project as you are doing. I think you already secured some undead parts and maybe some other monster parts. If Drindoleth or Bjorn are willing, their Bear Hair would do great for the one ingredient. I should have sent you this a long time ago honestly. But you have done really well without it. Do you have specific questions on the instructions? I would just assume discuss it in here for reference for other players too.
Very smart call on the scrolls, a good investment of gold. Looking for useful items for the staff is an excellent idea of course.
Thanks for asking questions and clarification. It only helps the game, the more asked here the better for all the players overall.
Was there supposed to be a document attached to that e-mail?
Yes, it was a 1 page Word Doc with the details. It looks like you had seen it, I'll send it again.
OK, got it. Thanks!
OK, we're down to the pair of Dwarves and Deor finishing up. This took longer than I thought it would. Bitur and Gwaelur are apparently MIA. If they don't post by tomorrow, I will spend the 4000 for them and get us going. DS9writer has not checked into the thread even. I have sent an Email and PM to both. Does anyone recall DS9 saying they would be away? It appears they checked the board at least today.
I know nothing. Also, Deor's ready to go.
ds9writer's said nothing to me about being offline.
Sorry for the "botch" about Ceol and Leofwin...I knew that the Rohirrim were very close to their individual horses, but if I'd known the exact details, I wouldn't have even suggested what I did in the main thread.
No problem at all. I can't cover everything unfortunately and so things like this come up in game.
LOTR letter openers
These miniature swords are of very good quality, and several have been marked down quite a bit by The Noble Collection (used to be $34, IIRC, and some are now just $14.50). They have Anduril, Sting, Glamdring, Narsil and Theoden's sword. Highly recommended: http://www.noblecollection.com/index...N9248&catid=17
My apologies. I can't scrape up the time to make the long game post needed. I will try very much to get it done tonight.
I should've known it had an individual name. Thanks, Malacandra!
In the game thread, you noted that a spellcaster's staff was broken in the Fireball. To my understanding, that means that he tried to turn the spell back against me and failed badly. Is that right?
That is probably correct. The other possibility is it was some other type of staff and failed its save versus magical fire.
Also from the game, Deor should be careful not to use magic missiles vs. Mage types. Miregol was targeting clerical types for good reason. They are far less likely to have something up to stop magic missiles.
Sorry I haven't been posting. I was having some severe connection problems here, but I finally got somebody out to fix it. Hopefully that's all done now.
A party of 24, heading toward the fort. This is what happens when you have a "blended family" of two adventuring parties. Reminds me of "Yours Mine and Ours". :D
Yep it is chaos. One more joint effort and I will be splitting your party off again I think, but first this one.
But it's a good chaos! Thanks, What Exit?
It is a good chaos. Allowing us to interact with a similar group provides the game-world with a significant breadth and depth, and I, for one, appreciate the opportunity. It's a fun thing to do.
Cool, I am glad you are enjoying it. I thought it would be fun to have the two major adventuring parties have a chance to interact. Especially as with the NPCs there has been some crossover.
They're not actually. Which is fine as it more easily allows me some game creep in the exact happenings between the two games.
Yeah, don't get me wrong, this is pretty cool, and allowed us to have that large-scale combat. :)
I missed this meme the first time around.
Hadn't seen that in a while. Frakking earworm. :D
A heads up that I'll be largely out of touch from Thursday through Sunday. Thanksgiving dinner at the in-laws, followed by a D&D convention on Friday and Saturday. I do love this particular holiday weekend. :D
I would say the rest of the week will be light. I'll try to get an update in though when the party decides what they are doing with the stairs.
*Never mind. Meant to post in game thread.*
Anyone seen this fan-made LOTR prequel, Born of Hope, before?:

Thought everyone might be interested in this - an English professor at Washington College does a Tolkien class and has posted all his lectures -

You can also find other podcasts on iTunes under iTunesU - look for The Tolkien Professor
Looks great - there's also a "Hunt for Gollum" independent film - says it's about 40 minutes long...

Yes, I saw the Gollum film earlier this year. Their Aragorn is good, but their Arwen, even in her brief appearance, falls well short of the mark, IMHO.
The enduring appeal of C.S. Lewis; his friendship with Tolkien is discussed, too: http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/1...ndures/?hpt=C2
FYI, I should be around, with the ability to post at least once per day, if not more, through the 23rd...but then I'll likely be mostly, if not completely, out of touch until the 29th.
I expect the next 2 weeks to slow down. But please let me know when Ceol would use any special abilities, especially the Laying on of hands.
Actually, my contract ends tomorrow and I'll be more available for a little while. But if it's slow, it's slow, and that's fine.
Given that he has a limited amount he can heal per day, he'll hold off on using the ability if possible, saving it for:
- If one of our other healers (particularly Gilraen) drops, or is gravely injured
- If someone near him drops unconscious, and it's not clear that Gilraen will be able to get to that person quickly
He'll make liberal use of Detect Evil as we explore any potentially-compromised areas, and will turn undead as we encounter them.
What does a +Spell Points item do, precisely? Does it allow more castings per day?

Sorry for the delays, I had some serious blizzard issues. Read all about it here:
Sorry for my absence, as well. I was up in Wisconsin with my family for a few days, but I also suffered a catastrophic virus on my laptop. It's in the shop, and I'm on my wife's computer for the time being.
Hope things work out to your satisfaction, kenobi65.
And a very Happy New Year to you all!

It's the Professor's 119th birthday - best wishes to you all!
A few years ago, I played in an RPGA campaign called "Living Death"...it was a Gothic horror campaign, set in an alternate version of 1890s Earth. There was one adventure in which our PCs were in South Africa, and saved a little boy from being trampled by a horse which had been possessed by a malign spirit. The little boy's mother ran over: "John, thank God you're all right!" She then introduced herself to us as Mrs. Arthur Tolkien. :D
Cool. And you probably didn't even have to make up a story about a mechanical rice-picker!

Sorry for the delay, I have some mixed messages in the game thread and I am trying to pull them together. As a heads so the players of the sneaking characters can prepare for it, those sneaking in invisibly will be detected. I just need to pull all the pieces together now.
Ceol glances in Mulligan's direction. "Do I smell smoke?" ;)
FYI, I'm off to a small gaming convention this weekend (Winter War, in Champaign, IL), and won't be online from Friday afternoon through Sunday.
