Rangin and Kylah can post in whatever order they wish, as far as I'm concerned. If Collins feels strongly otherwise, I suggest you do as she asks.

Rangin and Kylah can post in whatever order they wish, as far as I'm concerned. If Collins feels strongly otherwise, I suggest you do as she asks.
Just for note: I'm fairly busy these days, so I'll probably post as and when I get time, or when Rangin has something useful to say.
Just to confirm WES's comment -- I didn't get the impression that T'Var was sedating Fujishiro out of fear of her being altered* but rather just to keep her from being annoying a distraction during the escape.
* I refuse to use "zombified" in a Star Trek context, darn it! Not that I'm a purist, but there's no evidence that these creatures are dead, is there? They're genetically screwed-up and possibly able to infect others... though I don't think we've seen proof of even that much except for the fevers and odd behavior of Pourtash** and Fujishiro.
** Pourtash, btw, is getting on my last nerve almost as much as Waite is pissing off Kylah. I hope Collins tells Singh just how useless he's been. "Why don't we use our tricorders to scan" indeed! Scan yourself, Mr. second-in-command! :D (Yes, I know he's an NPC and we're constrained by that. Still!)
Hey fellow crewmembers -- I could be very wrong here but Elendil's Heir's text says that the supply closet and the machine shop doors were locked. He didn't say anything about the transporter room, and unless I'm blanking over a post, I don't think anyone's attempted to enter the transporter room. Collins went right for the closet/shop doors, then we got distracted by Fujishiro.
Of course we may very well end up with a three-locked-door scenario after all, considering our game mod is evil :), but we gotta try, no?
Evil? Perish the thought! I prefer... "creative."

Pluto has moons plural? It should resume its rightful place in the list of real planets!
Relevant song: "I'm Your Moon," by Jonathan Coulton. Written as a dialogue between Pluto's moon Charon to Pluto, comforting Pluto for being struck from the list of planets. :(
I'll be leaving for a weeklong family vacation in Arizona on Thursday; don't know how often I'll have online access. I appreciate your patience.

Cool
Whoa, that is cool. Intentional? If not, what does it signify?
I'd say intentional and a nod to the cooperation of formerly feuding enemies - but YMMV
hello am new on this nice to meet you all
I think we might have Chekov to thank: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_space_agency
Hi, music angel. Stick around. I may not be participating in the next scenario, I might need a break. So there might be room for you.
so, "stunned" huh? unconscious? wounded? how long am I out for?
LOL, I like how T'Var is only hoping on the two smallest members in the group. I know Pourtash and Delaney are NPCs now, but are they unable to take part in anything when it comes to natural behavior for their characters? (This is me genuinely asking -- I don't know how NPCs in RPGs work exactly.)
Also I can sure tell this ain't TNG-era. We'd be parlaying a lot more and attacking a lot less! I can almost hear the '60s-era jazzy soundtrack.

I was just reading my favorite PC gaming blog Rock Paper Shotgun's hilariously bad review of the new Star Trek: The Videogame, and among its other crimes, the reviewer mentions this (bolding mine):
EH! You're scarily prescient!Quote:
The vast majority of the game is spent running down corridors, using your tricorder to ‘hack’ terminals to get doors open or switch off security cameras and turrets, and shooting at waves of the same four or five enemy types throughout. The one variation appears in the form of a completely disconnected half-plot about the Gorn also turning your crew into zombie things with some virus, and you’re supposed to stun them instead of kill them.
The Gorn, eh? Hmmm....
I'm a big gamer myself -- mostly SF and Fantasy RPG's (Mass Effect & The Elder Scrolls). Was thinking about getting (or at least renting) this new ST game, but the reviews have not been very good -- like this one. Think I'll pass.
Heard about it, but a two person shooter where Kirk and Spock do pretty much the same thing doesn't really interested me really.
Finally got my hands on Sly 4 - so platform heaven for the next few weeks.
OOC: did you ever play Of Orcs and Men?
Not I. Gorns are kinda sorta the orcs of ST.
I would have thought that Orcs are Klingons, Elves are Vulcans and so on.
Vulcans are definitely quasi-Elves, in appearance if not in temperament or interests. I suppose both Gorn and Klingons have orcish characteristics.
And speaking of shuttlecraft (as we were doing in the game thread): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_3155633.html
More power to these guys, but the more work they do, the less it's the "original" shuttlecraft. Consider: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus. I also wouldn't credit ST for coining the term "space shuttle" - it was always a shuttlecraft on the show.
My postings will be sporadic at best over the next couple of weeks - I don't yet have media at my new apartment, so I can only post during my lunch breaks at work. and only if no one is standing over my shoulder. Please be patient with me.
Understood. Hope your move goes smoothly!
All the best with your move, anyrose! Post when you can. :)
Ah, I'd missed that. Thanks. My post 1275 amended.

"Star Trek: Secrets of the Universe"
Looks like a neat documentary about Trek stuff in prep for the upcoming new ST movie release.
I just got my media today! I'm back. Now I have to catch up.
Welcome back, anyrose! Hope the move went well, and that you like your new digs.
I've still got a couple dozen boxes yet to unpack, but I'm adjusting to the reduced space.
Welcome back, have fun settling in.
A baker's dozen from the SDMB:
ST cliches
1. Kirk getting his shirt torn in fights
2. The Goatee of Evil
3. Redshirts must die!
4. Scotty must defy the Laws of Physics
5. Spock and McCoy quarrel
6. Links to Earth culture on other planets ("A Piece of the Action," "Patterns of Force")
7. Spock (or Data) blindly tries to understand human emotions
8. McCoy gripes, "I'm a doctor, not a _____."
9. The never-before-seen alien species is a lot like humans except with a strange head
10. Women's costumes that defy the laws of physics (and gravity)
11. No woman can resist the Kirk-meister.
12. All the aliens (of a given culture) dress identically, with minor variations in color and trim details
13. Scotty invents an entirely new technology to solve some crisis
Welcome back, anyrose!
"2. The Goatee of Evil " -- or The Goatee of Awesome. Sisko became 120% more awesome once he shaved his head and got that goatee. Trust DS9 to subvert that cliche!
"4. Scotty must defy the Laws of Physics" Och, I thought he canna do tha'?
"7. Spock (or Data) blindly tries to understand human emotions" And Odo on DS9, to some degree. And on Voyager, they used that shtick with the Doctor / Seven of Sixty-Nine. (Sorry, that was cheap. I really disliked her character.)
"8. McCoy gripes, "I'm a doctor, not a _____."" - Heh. That's why Kylah said "I'm a communications officer, not a doctor" to Hayes in my last post.
"11. No woman can resist the Kirk-meister." Riker had a pretty good batting average too, though not nearly as high as Kirk.
"12. All the aliens (of a given culture) dress identically, with minor variations in color and trim details" -- Yeah, this was pretty bad. I seem to remember only a couple of exceptions; in "Thine Own Self," there was a medieval-esque culture that Data encountered when he had amnesia (or the android equivalent) and caused radiation sickness. The costumes there were roughly similar to medieval or renaissance Europe, so there was a similarity in style, but I recall the outfits were as varied as one would expect in a small community. Whoever did the costumes outdid themselves for once. Also, I think Bajorans had a relatively varied fashion sense, at least considering they were pretty poor and coming off decades of slavery.
"13. Scotty invents an entirely new technology to solve some crisis" - frankly surprised and pleased they didn't trot out the Wesley stereotype. (I also think objections to Wesley were overblown.)
Credit where credit is due!
T'VAR! DUDE! Kylah's been dying to pull that trigger for three rounds already! Dayum that's cold. Of course I blame our game master for giving Kylah the wimpy stun setting while two NPCs got the hardcore weaponry. :)
Well, that was only Hayes's suggestion, after all. Kylah could've objected, or Collins could've ordered otherwise.
Heh. Given the current "Roberts Rules of (Player Response) Order" now in effect, Kylah had to wait for Collins to respond to Hayes's suggestion. Once Collins said "do it," I was stuck. Kylah may be mouthy and borderline (or not-so-borderline) insubordinate, but yours truly couldn't think of a reason to have Kylah demand, "no, let me kill her!" over two more experienced officers without getting even T'Var annoyed with her. I mean, okay, there was a reason, but it was only "Well, I'm a player character and they aren't!" -- and while that might work in Order of the Stick, I didn't quite think it would fly here. :D
As the person who created the Hayes character at the beginning of this group, I was a bit surprised that she would want to use the "kill' setting. <g>
T'Var is just going with the flow as best she can. She just wants everybody to get back to the ship safely, then research the tissue samples and work with others to find a cure for this condition ASAP.
Hayes has been through a lot on this station. She's feeling the pressure of fighting for her life.
Has Jovan been beamed to the shuttle yet?
Thank you
Um, her named changed a few pages back from Merrike Jovel to just Jovan. Unless there are other Sakathians? Also please don't make me go looking for it, but who is on the shuttle and who is on the station. I'd like to be able to answer the Captain accurately without "forgetting" something important
Yeah, I noticed the name change too. It's like Gev and Geb. These Sakathians is wily! :)
Shuttle: You, Fujishiro, Jovan, Porr, Waite
Station: Hayes, Delaney, Pourtash, Rangin, T'Var, Kylah, Mrs. Porr (deceased-ish).
Of the other main NPCs we've met, Director Geb is likely eaten or been altered herself. (It suddenly strikes me, why are some infected while others are eaten whole? Is it just that the infected folks got away quickly enough to avoid being killed outright?)
Oops! Strive as I do for good continuity, sometimes I slip up. Sorry about that.
choie's list of who's where is correct. Thanks!
Dang anyrose, why didn't you just write "Now that everyone is back on the Yorktown, Collins reports to Singh about the mission"? :)
Seriously, a point of order? I think we have to be careful not to write stuff that, um, for lack of a better word, cockblocks either the GM or fellow players. Think of the options here:
- How do you know Kylah listens to T'Var and docilely gets on the transporter pad?
- Even if she does, how do we know the transporters even work while Delaney is trying to change their configuration, considering no one seems to have asked him that question?
- Even if the transporters work and Kylah, Hayes and Rangin get on the pads preparing to transport, how do we know that before anything else happens, Porr's wife doesn't leap for Kylah, T'Var or Rangin's throat and necessitate a whole different course of action?
- Hell, how do we know before Kylah can even get to the transporter pad, Mrs. Porr doesn't immediately successfully open the door now to let in her fellow creatures and we end up with a battle royale on our hands?
The first option is my decision, and the rest are all up to Elendil's Heir to tell us. I know I'm new at RPGs so this is presumptuous but I'm pretty sure we can't make assumptions about stuff that we don't have control over or we'll look goofy (and the game continuity gets broken) when EH corrects us. We've all had that happen at least once to us during this mission.
Just saying, I think we should be careful not to telescope time or assume actions that aren't in our own PC's control. (I mean, yipe, the Yorktown is still two days away. God only knows what EH has planned in the interim!)
Just because Collins said it doesn't mean Kylah has to comply - why start now? ;)
Ha! True enough. :) But your post hasKylah appearing in the shuttle and Collins talking to her. Is Collins having pregnancy-induced (or maybe hunger/thirst considering none of us has had anything in God knows how many hours) hallucinations? I think we can convey the same info via thoughts, such as having maybe Collins think When that crazy ensign gets up here I'm going to handcuff her instead of Porr, if only to keep my eyes on this pain-in-the-ass. At least then it's hypothetical instead of a done-deal, y'know? :)
Okay - I posted early; I was going on the assumption that T'Var was sending her back to the shuttle
choie's essential point is sound: You can say your character is going to try to do something, or (if he or she has the authority to do so) order another character to do something, but then leave it to me as to how it turns out. If anyrose, for instance, wrote, "Collins brushes her teeth," that's fine. Or even "Collins fires her phaser," that's fine too. But "Collins fires her phaser and hits and kills the bad guy," presumes too much. If the action your character is undertaking is complicated, or depends upon skill, chance, luck or cooperation by others, then just state what you are trying to do, and not the end result.
Sidenote to the player gang: Oookay, well, this ain't good. Guess killing her wasn't a brilliant plan. OTOH if Mrs. P. got the door open, we'd have one more creature to worry about, so her death at least leaves us with one less to worry about. Also, if Rangin, Kylah & Hayes were beamed away, that'd leave T'Var, Delaney and Pourtash to deal with this horde. Eh, I'm just hoping this isn't Kylah's fault! :D
Now a question for our GM: Could you please give us a count of the handheld weapons we've got? Are there any other phasers left from the batch Collins sent us?
Here's what I remember: originally, the only weapon was the phaser Collins grabbed from the dead security guy a few hallways back; after she aimed it at Porr, he stunned her, she dropped the weapon, and during the fight, Rangin grabbed it. T'Var (or someone else...?) grabbed the phaser Porr dropped. Once Collins revived, Ranging gave her back the phaser. Then she beamed over to the shuttle with it.
So that leaves Porr's phaser and the others that Collins beamed over. Hayes has one, Pourtash has one, and now T'Var has Kylah's (and possibly another one?). How many are left? Enough for Kylah and Delaney?
One last question: How far away is the second group of creatures from the entrance? Right behind, or is there any room between the groups (since the 11 were mentioned as being further away before, I'm hoping there's some space).
(Are these things okay to ask here? From what little I know of "live" RPGs, players seem able to ask the GM questions OOC, so I'm hoping this is kosher. I'd rather not break up the actual game thread with questions since it takes us out of the story. But if I should be asking the questions there, let me know.)
Isn't this usually the point that someone gets dragged outside by the zombies and messily eaten alive to everyone else's horror. :zombie:
Oh wait...
choie, yes, this is the right place to ask these questions. By my count, the party has three Starfleet phaser-2s beamed over from the shuttle, and two Sakathian phasers, as well as various other scavenged tools and implements of destruction. The phasers are your best bet, though. If Delaney continues working on the timed beamout sequence with the tricorder and is thus unable to shoot, and if Kylah re-arms herself, that leaves you with one phaser each.
There are 14 zombies, some now in the room and others right behind them. There may be, and quite likely are, others elsewhere in the station.
CIAS, you never know what might happen...!
Forgot to mention... WES is having some Internet access problems. She'll be fully back among us as soon as she can. Thanks for your patience.
Oh man what an inopportune time to lose the person currently in charge who's also our best fighter! Poor WES, I hope she'll be back soon!
Permission to come aboard, EH? :)
I'm finally back online! What a mess. We had nasty storms last night where I live in upstate NY. Tornado warnings, etc. We lost power for about three hours. When it came back on, I had no cable TV (terrible thing when you're a fan of both the Yankees and Mets -- and they're playing each other in the subway series). Worse yet, I had no internet. My first thought was similar to Choie's -- this is a really bad time to lose my internet! I can't post to the game thread when all hell is now breaking loose! My comrades need me! <g>
I was so desperate to find out what was going on, I used my mom's very old webtv to reach this thread -- took a lot of doing, let me tell you. Then, to make matters worse, I could read the latest posts, but was unable to post myself.
I sent EH several emails, asking to post on my behalf until I had my regular internet service back. Many thanks to EH for taking the time to do this for me.
So glad to be back. Even though it was only for a short time, I really missed this group. You're all the best. It's an honor to serve with each and every one of you. Now let's take care of these darn "zombies" and get the heck off this darn station!
Great to have you back, WES, and glad to help!
Is the comm still on? Does Collins hear the commotion and Delaney's declaration?
No one said an open channel was being maintained IIRC, so I will assume not.
Oh dear, stunned under a pile of dead zombies. It's not Rangin's day, is it?
Count your blessings. At least they're not chewing on him... yet.
Rangin's right arm would like to disagree :p
Biting =/= chewing.
I've no doubt Collins's phaser has plenty of juice left, O Game Master. :D Did you mean Pourtash?
So T'Var is holding four phasers?! And is Delaney going to respond to T'Var's request that he teach her how to run a transporter remotely, or can he somehow do it while standing on a transporter pad?
And how far are those Sakathians that Kylah saw down the hall?
Yes, we'll see, and don't know yet, respectively.
Thank you good sir! Hmm, I'm gonna assume Kylah's really bad at judging distances, if she couldn't tell how far away the creatures were! (Which is entirely possible; I'm not very good with them myself.)
Notes that I didn't have time to edit into my last post:
See #927, here for Fujishiro's stating she wasn't wounded, and #975 for her appearing unbitten but with only a bleeding scratch.
Interestingly, Rangin has been bitten twice, two separate times (first during his and T'Var's reconnaissance mission, and of course during the last battle) and yet he's not showing anywhere near the same level of damage. That first bite predates Fujishiro's scratch, too, so it's not a timing thing. Maybe it's his different race that makes him less vulnerable to the infection. That might be something to investigate, team mates.
...and people wonder why Rangin scanned himself... ;)
I'm a big Rangin fan. Far as I'm concerned, Rangin, Kylah and Hayes should be starring in their own version of "Lower Decks." One pip good, two or more bad! :)
(Yes I know there were no pips in TOS-era.)
Check out the upcoming movie Europa Report, about a privately-funded mission to one of Jupiter's moons that (of course) goes awry - looks like it could be good:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhdRYk1Y8VA
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2051879/?ref_=sr_1
Yay, we're back!
BTW I have no idea if what I just wrote for Kylah is the correct procedure for an incoming message considering the circumstances. :)
I don't think Rangin will be doing much in the main thread until someone manages to cure him. :zombie:
Not to worry, CIAS! I'm sure Dr. T'Var will do everything in her power to cure Rangin.
If it all goes horribly wrong, at least I have a backup character. He's not very good at chess though. ;)
I beg to differ with CIAS. Mr. Johnson is much better at chess than he gives himself credit for. And I am hopeful that the medical staff will restore Mr. Rangin to full health ASAP. :)
Perhaps the good Dr T'var can enlighten Mr Johnson on where he went wrong and what he could do to improve his game :p
Hey I'm a bit confuzzled by the timeframe due to the varied posting times. (Rangin posts in the early a.m., T'Var around 10ish ET, Collins midday, and our GM anywhere from 10PM - midnight.) So there's inevitably some cross-posting when EH responds to our various activities in the same post, even though they may be occuring at different times. For example, Kylah fell asleep in the same post where Collins and T'Var were waking up, ditto Rangin.
But can I assume that Kylah fell asleep last night, probably after T'Var/Collins, and is now waking up just as everyone else is? I'm pretty sure that's fine, I just want to make sure it's okay to say that Kylah had a good long rest even though technically it seems as if she was up all night. :)
In short, I guess I'm asking: as of now, how much time has passed since Kylah fell asleep / the thur'lel was sent off to Vargas? Can I assume it's been about 7 - 8 hours and I'm all caught up with the rest of the gang?
Do you mind, I post in the middle of the day :p
Ooh whoopsy, Cat in a Suit! I was speaking of my own time zone. Didn't realize where you were! The one time I was fortunate enough to go to England, we stayed in a house in Sutton about 15 minutes away from you! Of course I was about 5 or 6 at the time so my memories are dim.
Thanks for the info Elendil's Heir, and also for speeding time up a bit.
Though we're now touching the edge of my knowledge of my character's job (it is a nebulous job, after all). Just what in the heck does an asst. communications officer do all day when she's not on the bridge? Junior engineer officers are down in Engineering, junior security officers would be, uh, guarding or training or doing whatever it is they do around the ship, junior medical officers would be in sick bay... but comm officers? Somehow I imagine them all hanging out in some room like old-fashioned telephone operators, putting wires in slots to connect each communicator to another thousands of times a day. "Comm Panel 3874, please hold the line..."
Tried to do research but all I could find was "Is ready to replace the Chief Comm Officer on the Bridge." Or there are some specialists who help with decoding and language (stuff Kylah is good at) but surely there aren't all that many calls for that on a ship like the Yorktown. Unless the thur'lel info needs some kind of knowledge of Sakathian idioms that the UT can't handle, I'm not entirely sure how my poor girl's gonna spend her time! :)
Good question, choie. There was reference in one of the TOS novels - I forget which one - to a Communications center belowdecks on the Enterprise, and it sounded kind of like the call center or Ma Bell phonebank you jokingly describe, but that kind of thing has never been shown on any of the shows that I know of. In our game, I suppose a mix of training, maintenance, diagnostics, decryption and monitoring of Federation-wide subspace message traffic would make sense, esp. since the Comm duty officer on the Bridge would presumably be too busy for much of that. What do you think?
Okiedoke, all that makes good sense! Thanks. :) On one ST RPG site, which admittedly isn't exactly canon, there was some discussion of subspecialties dealing with linguistics and translations of written communications (I guess like subspace email, sorta), together with any archival written material given to the ship from other planets and civilizations to the Federation for research, like a goodwill gesture to further our understanding of other cultures. I suppose excavated material from old, died-out civilizations would also be part of this. Maybe that goes on there as well.
That makes sense to me. Think of how massive the sum total of human knowledge now is... now think of how vast the store of a multispecies, interstellar society would be! Whew.
A librarian's dream! (Or nightmare...)
As long as I have you on the line, as it were: for some reason I don't recall whether those flip-phone type communicators were ever used in TOS for inter-ship communications. (Remember my knowledge is primarily TNG-era based, so it's all about the combadges, baby!) How would Kylah or whoever normally report for duty or get in touch with someone--via the communicators, or would they use the comm panel system? With my dim recollection of TOS episodes, I only remember the phone-esque communicators being noticeable on away missions, used to communicate with the ship or vice-versa. What would be the correct process on board the ship among the crew?
The great majority of time, TOS-era shipboard communications were carried out on the small, bulkhead- or table-mounted comm panels, like these:
Kirk using one: http://alancastillo.com/sitebuilder/...SG-581x600.jpg
Just to the right of Spock's computer terminal here: http://www.filmjunk.com/images/weblo...abble50_10.jpg
And by Scotty's right hand: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/...3750286603.jpg
But if a crewmember was away from such a panel, and needed to stay in one spot while working (such as Sulu in a Jefferies Tube, for instance), communicators could of course be used: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__...eries_tube.jpg
For the comm panels, to reach someone, you just punched the TALK button and said, for instance, "Kylah to Lt. Thalen." The ship's computer automatically routed your call to wherever he was - applying AI to a mix, I suspect, of (a) where he was supposed to be at that time of the day on the ship's duty roster, (b) where his communicator, if he was carrying one, showed him to be, and (c) the place in the ship from where he last sent a message of his own. Although I don't remember it ever happening, I could see a situation arising that if Ens. Smith (a) was not at his post, (b) was not carrying a communicator and (c) had not used the comm system himself, there would be no answer to your call. You could then either leave a message on his cabin voicemail or, in an emergency, page him over the comm system shipwide.
What do you think?
Ooh thank you so much! Very very helpful, EH.
My pleasure.
And as a bonus, whodathunk there'd be a link between Capt. Kirk and the filibuster? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R94sRLS0QWI
Question (for either EH or anyrose): Did Collins spend the night in her quarters or w/Ben? I'm not asking for prurient reasons, heh. Just want to know if, now that it's morning, Kylah is waking up with her roommate or is alone in her room.
AFAIK, Collins spent the night in quarantine, then worked her shift, saw the doctor, and is now having dinner with Ben. She hasn't been back to her quarters yet. Unless I am completely wrong.
eta - ah, I see. I also read this first before the game thread. I don't know where Collins will be spending the night yet. It depends how her dinner conversation goes.
I would ask that you, Elendil's Heir, respond to the PMs quickly as I will try to do as well, so that the conversation can be posted soon
Regardless of how well Collins's dinner with Cooper goes, there are plenty of good reasons for her to want to spend the night alone in her own bed. But write what you please.
or she may want to stay in the arms of her lover
But of course!
If this were TNG, Collins would challenge Kylah to a game of Parisi Squares - to-the-death! ;) :D
Hee. Hey I wanted to bring some internecine battles to the crew. Y'all were too nice to each other. Collins would kill Kylah at Parisi--the Elasian is no sportswoman by any means.
Kylah should probably sleep with one eye open. And one hand on her remaining dagger.
Mwuhahaha.
A new painting of the Battle of Yorktown, BTW: http://www.historicalartprints.com/v...list.php?id=34
That's Pourtash in the tight white trousers, yes?
we are two months away from the two year anniversary of the start of this mission. How much "game time" has actually passed?
Great question! I can only answer from the actual mission (rather than the fakeout at the start of the thread). For that, I'm guessing fewer than two weeks, starting with our mission briefing. Well, let me zip through the thread for references to double-check...
- Day one: Hayes briefs us on the mission.
- Day two: Collins and crew gang have dinner, talk about mission
- Day five: Two days pass, then we arrive in the Sakathian airspace, we have the endless crisis due to the weapons issue before it's settled and we arrive again on the station, animals are transported, and finally dinner with the Sakths and MU research team.
- Day six: We awaken to discover we're locked in.
- Day seven: The Yorktown informs us of their new orders, so we'll be alone.
- Day eleven: Three days pass after the ship leaves us. We have lunch normally, and then... The Incident Begins. After lots of action, Collins informs the Yorktown of the problem, and we learn it'll be 2 days until the ship can return.
- Day thirteen: After escaping to the Meitner, we wait until the ship picks us up as scheduled.
- Day fifteen: We're released from quarantine. (This time was hard to pinpoint; at one point Collins was told we'll only be in quarantine for 8 more hours, but then 17 hours passed before we were released according to the linked thread. Not sure how much time had passed before then.)
- Day sixteen: Today.
Slightly more time has passed than I thought (I missed that there was so much time before the Yorktown left the Sakathian system).
EH, have I calculated correctly?
For this particular mission, yes, that looks about right. Thanks, choie.
Cool beans. You're welcome, sir.
Just in case anyone gets a notification message with a massive wall of words from Kylah, yet notices how much (blessedly) briefer her comments are in the actual post, the reason for this is 'cause I edited them out since I realized she should wait until she's asked before giving such extensive testimony. So, I'm saving that stuff for later. :)
(Am I the only one who purposely doesn't read my notification emails, by the way? I always delete them and only read the stuff in the actual thread. I dunno, it's more exciting that way!)
I set my settings to *not* send notification emails. I just check in a couple of times a day
It's not Trek, but it's news

Well, well. Great minds think alike: Kylah picking up where Rangin was heading. :)
Crackling dialogue from you all - just like TOS at its best!
That's mostly 'cause you set up a great. courtroom drama-esque situation here. I'm thinking less TOS than one of TNG's hearing/testimony-heavy episodes, like "Measure of a Man" or "The Drumhead." (But that's probably just 'cause I know TNG like the back of my hand, where I have only vague familiarity w/TOS.)
TNG was definitely more talk than action.
am I correct in that tactical is the seat next to helm at the station closest to the main view screen?
No, Tactical is to the right of the Engineering post, two stations to your left as you emerge from the turbolift onto the Bridge. To your right as you emerge from the turbolift are Communications and then Sciences.
The Helm and Navigation are directly in front of the Captain's chair, facing the viewscreen.
Thus ends Mission #2, "Primum Nil Nocere." I hope you liked it. As with the first mission, I never expected it to last this long! I really do expect the next one to be much shorter (famous last words....)
This is your game as much as mine, so please let me know what you thought - the good, the bad and the ugly. What did you especially like or dislike about this mission? What could I do better next time? If you'd rather not post here, please PM me. Your feedback is important to me. Thanks.
As with the first mission, several of the secondary characters' names have something in common. I also included some in-jokes about a favorite recent movie of mine. Anyone have a guess? And did anyone notice when things began to go awry on the Sakathian space station? Heheheh.
We have up to three prospective new crewmembers with whom I've been in touch. We'll start Mission #3 as soon as their Starfleet personnel files are squared away.
when there is action, real action, I'd like to see the characters, and especially the GM, post faster. When it's just exposition, the normal speed we've established is fine.
The mission leader, whomever that is, should post first after a GM post. I know choie checks this site more frequently than I do and she writes her character very well. But if a junior officer is coming up with solutions before the senior officer/mission commander has had a chance to post and maybe come up with the same solution, then it looks like the mission commander is falling down on the job.
I don't expect Singh will choose Collins to lead again any time soon, so it's not just for me that I speak.
If this is an unreasonable request, please make the case against it. I'll listen.
Hi EH! Wow, I wasn't expecting the mission to end the way it did. I'm hoping there'll be follow-up to come in the next one.
anyrose, the only problem with your second suggestion, which is otherwise perfectly sound, is that it possibly conflicts with your first suggestion. I think we'd have loved to post more quickly but we were waiting on players who check the thread maybe once a day, and quite often at least 12 hours after the GM posts (EH usually seems to post after 10PM ET, while you tended to post in the early afternoon ET).
I do agree with the second rule, which does make sense, and which I followed when you mentioned it the first time (though I didn't bother waiting when something in EH's post was only directly addressing Kylah and didn't affect the others). Like you I was anxious to keep things moving and found it frustrating to wait, but once the dictum was made, I'm pretty sure I followed it. Doesn't seem fair to single me out again, but okay. I'm a beginner and heaven knows I screwed up a lot of times!
I will say this, though: with the greatest respect to Collins, girlfriend often made herself look bad without any help from me or Kylah! :) Actually, I think just as Kylah's mistakes made sense for her character, Collins's mistakes--I'm thinking specifically of those after the "choie, stop posting so much, idiot" rule--made total sense too. Collins was blatantly distracted by her personal problems and physical issues, not to mention seeming overwhelmed by her first command, and I assumed you were RPing her that way.
EH, what I'd personally love, though it may not be possible, is maybe more follow-up once the immediate mission is over but before the next one begins? I notice that we have at least two big cliffhangers that haven't been resolved now: the whole Walsingham / murderous Dr. Bucci from the previous mission (and that's a couple of years old), and now it looks like we might never find out exactly what caused the whole Sakathian mess, we don't know if Geb knew about any of this, we don't know what if anything is on that thur'lel thingy that I must assume was included among Porr's items for a reason, we don't know if any of the MU people survived, Waite is still obviously a lying liar who lies but what is he lying about, our comatose crewmate might die or not, we don't know if there'll be reprecussions re: the Sakathians and Starfleet re: the mission's failure... Lots of unanswered questions, I guess. Maybe that's the nature of the beast, I dunno. Of course I totally respect that you may have a "long game" plan for Bucci/Walsingham/Fujishiro/Waite/Porr etc. but bearing in mind these missions take literally years to complete, I wonder if it might risk losing its impact, especially since several of the people who participated in that earlier mission are no longer here.
So as a suggestion... I wonder if there's a way to overlap these missions so that integrated with the later mission is a subplot regarding the earlier one. (Which I was expecting re: Bucci, given the Hippocratic Oath name of this mission.) As a fellow writer I don't want to step on your storytelling ideas, I just wanted to throw it out there as one way to continue older plots while still focusing on current ones.
Anyway I just hope that the next mission starts but gives us time to do some character work. Honestly I had every intention of having Kylah go to Singh with stuff she left off her written report about the senior officers' behavior (including both Collins and Pourtash, the latter of whom really turned into a total spineless wimp), none of which Kylah put down in her report. I also hoped to follow up with T'Var regarding her experiences on the mission, but with the mission's end I have no idea if there'll be time or desire to do that once the next one begins. Oh and I totally hope Kylah gets to get some face time with that transporter engineer Ferguson asshat who made that creepy look/comment to her!
Suggestions aside, I want to thank you wholeheartedly for an enjoyable and suspenseful mission, for being patient while teaching a complete novice about forum RPGing, and for allowing me to create such an annoying and irksome character. And many thanks to the other players for letting me learn along the way.
anyrose and choie have valid points. I think we need to be patient with each other. Since we all post at different times of the day and night, it's a challenge to keep up with the thread as it unfolds. Posts overlap a lot. This can cause confusion and/or posts which don't make much sense. The fact that some folks check the thread several times a day while others only check once (or every other day) compounds this issue. For me, it's hard sometimes to really keep track of what's going on, where we are and such.
And yes, I'd like to see more socialization with crew members in between missions. Not sure how this would play out, but I think it's important to give it a try. It's a challenge when we have crew members leaving in the middle of a mission and new crew arriving at the start of the next.
Perhaps a different thread just for social activities? T'Var has a "playing chess in the mess hall" thread. Could we have a separate thread just for the social aspects of our characters lives? Or would this just complicate things more?
Thanks to everyone for taking part in this mission. I enjoyed it and had lots of fun. :)
I like that idea - the one of a separate thread for personal interactions - we could link to within the game thread when appropriate.
Thanks for your feedback, everyone!
The next mission will start, in game time, immediately after Mission #2, with the Yorktown still just arrived at Starbase 27. We can pick up right where we left off.
The rules require posting at least every other day (see post 1 of this thread). I could require daily posts, but not everyone can do that. Patience and tact among players are definitely encouraged.
It is quite possible that Collins will be picked again to command a boarding or landing party. Don't count her out yet.
Following up on unanswered questions is fine, but your character must take the initiative - inquiring of superior officers, shipmates, the library computer, Federation newsnets, Starfleet Command, etc. I will withhold some answers for long-term storytelling reasons, but others are certainly available.
Personal, off-duty interaction between characters is definitely a plus, and of course the rules encourage it. At the start and end of each mission, there've been opportunities for it, and occasional downtimes during missions, too. I would rather that such interactions remain a part of the game thread, however, rather than being split off in a different thread. They're integral to each crewmember's experience. (The chess thread is different, I think, and perhaps the exception that proves the rule, because those are ongoing games between just two people at a time, and also aren't tied to the timeline or narrative flow of the missions). It could get pretty complicated to have links back and forth between, in essence, a duty and an off-duty thread.
It looks like we will have one new player joining us after all. Another has declined, and a third has not responded to several recent emails, after earlier expressing strong interest.
Any other thoughts?
Dammit EH, closure is required. You can't just leave us hanging like that with so many questions unanswered. Oh and adding in Miskatonic U and a doctor called Waite - where was the body swapping? :P
Ok, for real this time. first off I enjoyed playing along even though I had not much of a clue of what was going on and started half way through. Regardless it was fun to play along and see what Rangin could get up to.
In terms of people posting, its a problem that's never going to be solved. I thought the pace went pretty well, in most situations, people are always going to cross post and waiting for someone is not always going to happen. I don't tend to post at weekends, so I can't do the once a day, but I'll still contribute when I can.
The only main suggestion I would make, is that if someone manages to post an action that predicts how something turns out in the next GM post or two, then I would suggest including it rather than make them wait for the action before posting again. It might help to speed things up slightly, even though things might get slightly out of order as people read it.
Ha. No body-swapping... this time. Of course several of you noticed the reference to the notorious Miskatonic University, site of so much creepiness in H.P. Lovecraft's stories. And, indeed, each of the MU staff mentioned in Mission #2 had some Lovecraftian predecessor: Waite and Upton ("The Thing on the Doorstep"), Pierce ("The Colour Out of Space"), Dyer ("At the Mountains of Madness"), Olmstead (The Shadow Over Innsmouth"), Wilmarth and Akeley ("The Whisperer in Darkness") and Holt ("The Picture in the House"). Each is taken from a favorite HPL story of mine; each ended up about as unpleasantly as he or she did in the original works, I'd say.
As to in-jokes from a favorite recent movie: the planet where the Yorktown had shore leave before its Sakathian assignment was Morra III, named, as I mentioned earlier, after Edward "Eddie" Morra (played by Bradley Cooper) in Limitless. Burger, Glynn, Lindy and Dixon, all characters from the movie, were also mentioned as places on Morra III, and the serum about which Dr. Waite spoke, ntLd, stood for "not the Limitless drug."
Finally, as to when things started to go seriously wrong on the Sakathian space station? Take a look back. When the first scream was heard, here in the real world... 'twas Halloween, my friends!
Here's your new shipmate; I'll post this in the Character Profiles thread, too. Bryan is an old Trekker friend of mine - please join me in welcoming him aboard!
Starfleet Personnel File
CHARACTER NAME: Booker Graham
USERNAME: general_urko
CURRENT RANK: Ensign
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Security Specialist, Security Department, USS Yorktown, NCC-1717
SPECIES: Human
RACIAL/ETHNIC SUBGROUP: Scotch-Irish, with the admixture one would expect from a family with a history in the Boston area on Earth dating back to the early 1900s
AGE: 50
SEX: Male
HOMEWORLD: Earth
ATTRIBUTES:
• Charisma 8
• Dexterity 11
• Endurance 12
• Intellect 8
• Luck 4
• Psi 2
• Strength 10
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Although on balance he looks every bit his age, Graham's scores on fitness tests are better now than when he was in the Academy (and better than most cadets half his age, as well). He is relentless about both cardiovascular and strength training. Although not a large person (about 1.75 meters and 80 kilograms), he comes across as someone who naturally weighs less, but has added muscle to come up to his current weight. His eyes are green and he has a slightly ruddy complexion. Graham’s hair has gone completely gray, but is still full and nearly shoulder-length; at times he pulls it tightly back into a ponytail. A long thin scar runs from just under his hairline to his chin on the right side of his face.
PERSONALITY PROFILE: His Starfleet record notes that Graham has “a bias for action; pays attention to detail, but can be impatient; sometimes taciturn or withdrawn.” Even the most casual acquaintances tend to start asking themselves, “Which Booker will show up today – or in the next five minutes?” At times he comes across as devil-may-care, nonchalant, even insouciant, but at others switches to an intense, hyper-vigilant demeanor - sometimes for no obvious reason (at least not obvious to anyone but Graham).
FAMILY: Wife, Jane Haighton-Graham, deceased. Daughter, Elizabeth Haighton, doctoral student on Earth.
HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: He has a large collection of historical memorabilia associated with his family that tends toward (but isn’t limited to) the martial – old Earth-style boxing gloves, a police officer’s billyclub, a giant claymore supposedly used in 15th Century Scotland. He is game to try most physical sports or martial arts (and is always looking for combat traditions or techniques that can give him and his colleagues an edge), but prefers boxing and racquetball. He enjoys good food and drink and favors traditional Earth dishes over alien cuisine. He makes no secret of his opinion that whiskey is the best breakfast. He has a soft spot for big dogs (or dog-like animals).
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND: Starfleet Academy Class of 2241
SERVICE RECORD: Graham has a 25-year service record. Over the past eight years, he has repeatedly volunteered for combat assignments, most often but not exclusively focused on interdicting Orion pirates. He has a number of commendations, but over the last ten years reprimands and a number of disciplinary actions for which records have been sealed or redacted substantially outnumber them. His Starfleet record indicates that Graham once held the rank of lieutenant commander for ten days; he has held the rank of ensign for the past six years. Some instructional tapes he created, entitled “What You Need to Know to do Maximum Damage if Your Opponent is _______,” are still available in the Starfleet training database. Subjects include Klingon, Romulan, Orion, Gorn, as well as Tellarite, Andorian and Vulcan. Graham has received supplemental training in law enforcement and forensic investigation from the United Earth Police Commission.
CAREER GOAL: This section of his Starfleet file is blank.
Ooh fascinating and slightly mysterious history there. Welcome aboard, general_urko and Mr. Graham!

Welcome aboard general_urko and Mr. Graham!
There's a character profile thread? :dubious:
Thanks for the welcome wishes...it's been a pleasure reading the previous missions, glad to be "aboard."
Welcome on board, hope you enjoy the game.
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you with us. :)
What shops and recreational facilities does this Starbase have?
Boy, did I misread this line by mistaking that first semicolon for a comma. My immediate thought was: wow, the Rigellians must have quite a unique interpretation of "Fair is foul, and foul is fair, hover through fog and filthy air."Quote:

P.S. I'm really slow on the uptake--just realized what the title of the mission refers to. Uh oh! What an interesting callback... very curious to see where this is headed!
Reading about a tipsy Kylah made my day. Thanks, choie!
See the expanded post 33 in the game thread, as to Ens. Graham's first meeting with Cmdr. Vargas.
Thank you! And to CatInASuit for having Rangin invite Kylah to shore leave. I'm having fun with her tipsy too--I wasn't expecting her to get drunk but suddenly there she was, blotto. Girlfriend needs it, I think.
By the way I am very glad that there's so little known about Elas. The fact that they and so many of these other races usually have a single name always cracked me up (well, that and the fact that they all have one "look" and usually nearly identical clothing) so since I couldn't find anything out about Elasian naming conventions, I figured I could do some inventing. (Actually I used some Klingon inspiration, and some inspiration from the Nietzscheans from Andromeda--her father's name is a definite homage to Tyr from the latter show. Hey, it's all Roddenberry. Plus the Elasians just remind me of both races--superiority complexes and whatnot.)
It wasn't quite what Rangin was expecting, when he made the offer, but its a lot more fun that it could have been.
Personally, I'm enjoying the interaction and it makes for some fun roleplay.
You're not the first to notice that: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PlanetOfHats
Quite so!
I'll be honest the interspersed conversation between Kylah and Velir and that of Jeremi and Ben is quite amazing.
Well, they are happening simultaneously ;)
More or less, timing-wise. But yes, you're all doing well!
This is intense...I thought we were just going to shoot some Klingons. :)Quote:
I'll be honest the interspersed conversation between Kylah and Velir and that of Jeremi and Ben is quite amazing.
So when do you pay for something in a Star Trek bar? When you've finished or as it comes? If the former, Rangin has a bar bill he needs to pay off before leaving.
Yup. I'll see to it.
I have another question, EH: what do you call the, um, place on the starbase where crew members go to get beamed up to the ship?
They could go anywhere in the open, and use a public comm terminal or their own communicators, and call the ship: "Kylah to Yorktown. Two to beam up."
Ah gotcha, thanks. I thought maybe there was some official rendezvous point or something. I wonder when people are beaming off the ship to the planet, how they'd avoid either a) getting transported into a person walking right into their path, or simply b) scaring the bejesus out of anyone a few feet away who wasn't expecting someone to appear!
Hmm, wonder if Rangin got completely the wrong end of the question that Kylah asked. :D
Seriously! Brrr! And I thought Kylah was the quickest to take offense. Nice twist, CatInASuit.
That makes sense, I'll accept it as truth. :)
Boy that Cecillia Bennett is quite the skank. Kylah never got the "tee hee, welcome aboard newbie!" treatment when she came aboard! Guess that's only reserved for manly men like Booker.
You may remember that the original player characters were greeted by her on a shuttlecraft when they first came to the Yorktown; so was Rangin when he beamed aboard. I can't remember why Kylah wasn't also thus greeted - my apologies for the oversight. I guess we can assume it happened "off-camera."
As for "skank" - perish the thought!
I'm sure she's just jealous of other curvy brunettes and decided to snub poor Kylah. :)
Jeril - ROTFLMAO - :bravo:
CRAP I'm an idiot. Kylah is clearly drunker than I thought she was--or I am. Okay, now I have to find a way to spin this.
For those who'd forgotten what Starfleet TOS-era dress uniforms looked like: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Wai0KpzGIP...msenhanced.jpg
Thanks! Wow, snazzy. Is my monitor badly calibrated or are those trousers a dark navy rather than black? (Then again I also always thought Kirk dressed in gold rather than that nearly chartreuse green he's wearing here.)
Also, thanks for getting Rangin and Kylah out in the hallway so I can explain already. :) These two are like a bad soap opera of misunderstandings.
Black pants all around. I've read varying explanations for why Kirk's shirt color seemed to shift, almost from episode to episode, from yellow to gold to green. :: shrug :: Captain's prerogative, I guess.
I just learned that this 1836 painting of Gens. Washington and Rochambeau conferring during the 1781 siege of Yorktown is now on temporary display at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.. You can see Lafayette over Washington's left shoulder: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Versailles.JPG
The guy to whom Washington appears to be saying "go forth" is wearing a red shirt (okay it's a waistcoat, but still)
Washington's in dark blue, closer to the map; the guy gesturing more grandly is Rochambeau, his French colleague. And the guy in the red waistcoat was killed by a lightning bolt just before the next commercial break.
"no drama" HAH! ;) :D
Yeah that was hilarious! I'm really looking forward to our interacting with Booker. It should be interesting, to say the least, to see his dynamic with Collins, as well as the rest of us.
Gotta say I'm loving the interplay among our side storylines here--e.g. Rangin getting curious enough to investigate this Ferguson oddity (seriously, learning of this NPC's white-bread background is making me even more curious as to what the hell his problem was with Kylah!). It would be cool if each of the PCs had various connections with one another.
Oh! And I got a huge kick out of Rangin asking the computer basically "so does Ferguson have problems with women?" How detailed does he think these Starfleet records get? I'd have died if the computer had responded with "Ferguson has certain Oedipal issues dating back to his mother's remarriage during the breastfeeding stage of his childhood" (in Majel Barrett's voice, of course). :)
And this isn't even the main storyline...is it?
Glad to hear you 're enjoying Rangin's struggling with the ship's computer. He has about as much of a clue as I do currently. :p
Gosh no, this is all sidequest material WES and I are improvising, and fortunately by having Rangin ask Kylah to join him, you've made it possible to get those characters interacting on a more personal basis as well, which is awesome. Rangin's curiosity re: Ferguson makes total sense. (And as far as Rangin/you not having a clue--honestly I didn't even think of Kylah just asking the computer for ol' Fergie's background. Duh!)
Obviously all this stuff'll be put on hold once the mission proper starts, unless there's some minor dovetail EH sees fit to incorporate (very doubtful considering how tightly he probably plans these missions, but I know the TNG/DS9 "B" stories often do intersect with the "A" stories, so you never know).
But in the meantime it's fun to see the crew not be islanded off in our own separate plots the way we have been in the past. I remember early on, the PCs usually interacted only with NPCs rather than each other during non-mission-related scenes, but that seems to be changing, which makes this such fun. The whole reason I am such a TNG/DS9 fan is how well each character worked when paired with everyone else (especially on DS9).
Your characters have all always been free to interact with one another. Do so to your hearts' content.
Great mental (audio) image. Thanks!
For those who weren't around for Kylah's encounter with Ferguson, see post 658 here: http://www.mellophant.com/forums/sho...re-quot/page14.
Cool, I figured as much! I just noticed it wasn't done that much in the earlier threads; maybe we're just getting more comfy with it now as our characters get more familiar with each other? All I know is I love it and I hope we get to see some unique dynamics between, like, T'Var and Graham, and all the other permutations of our PCs. It's fun to read!
Ooh that link didn't work for me since I have my pages set up to maximum--I only have 8 pages in that whole mission, for example. If anyone doesn't catch those, the posts are #658 and #661.
I should say that Kylah's sensing hostility from this dude is not my own invention. Like Kylah and Rangin I quite genuinely have no idea what Ferguson's story is either, though unlike Rangin I know what Kylah sensed was accurate, at least as far as she perceived it. :) But that's as far as my knowledge goes.
Edited to add: Just read your latest, EH--well played! I'm glad that Rangin 'reminded himself' that these are just the nonclassified records, because I was beginning to think--what the hell, is Fergie just a generic asshat after all? Of course he may be, for all I know; I'm just grateful to be reminded (along with Rangin) that not everything is available to all levels of security.

You know, I just noticed that along with being a Doctor, T'Var is also a Lt. :smack:
Thanks, EH! Great video. Made my day. <g>
Yes, T'Var is both a Dr. and a Lt. But she's a nice Dr. and Lt. :)

At least she didn't say it out loud....
Oops...in post 132 I intended to say that "before anyone can reply, or Booker could sit down, Collins extended a hand. My interpretation of the situation was: T'Var said hi, Booker replies, then Collins interjects." Not a big deal, but FWIW.
Hey guys, ST:TOS tech check please?
I need info on how people locate others on the ship.
As most of you know, my knowledge of Trek is almost entirely TNG-era. I know that, say, Riker could be walking--well, striding--down the corridor and if he got it into his mind to pay a surprise visit to Troi, he could likely just ask the computer "Computer, where is Lt. Commander Troi right now?" by going up to one of the walls that has a computer interface (which IIRC is all of them--isn't the black lacquer-esque wall covering a computer panel?), or even just tapping his comm badge.
What about now, in the current TOS-era? How does someone locate someone else? Can one do that?
Riiight, thanks, I remember that now. I guess I'm asking, if I want to ask where someone is, without contacting them, will the computer tell me?
Also, while I'm at it, I'll sorta echo Collins's question -- what time did her and Kylah's shift end, and how much time is there until the dinner?

No, we never saw the Library Computer used that way in TOS that I can recall. If you didn't want to proceed as post 900 states, you might ask a friend to go look for someone and then report back to you, I suppose.
They're watches, not shifts (better nautical terminology), and they ended at 1600 hours (4pm), leaving three hours until the officers' dinner.
LOL. I'd say less than a third of those are accurate for our game. What do you think?
