Hmm, who to think of next.
OMG, you know every garbagetastic cartoon Hollywood has expelled from its trashy maw, but do not know Archie Bunker and All in the Family? (Sorry for forgetting to include the sitcom name!) And yes, it's easily one of the ten best U.S. sitcoms.
Archie is a much more nuanced character than Alf, even in the earliest years before his worldview gradually expanded by the nature of the times. He remained a bigot to the end, but as more of the outside world encroached on his territory via neighbors, in-laws and relatives, Archie's POV was challenged and the rough edges softened. Carroll O'Connor's performance is just perfection, making Archie funny while sometimes poignant, rough but not crass, ignorant but not stupid, and a bully but almost never intentionally mean.
The first season is raw, and Jean Stapleton's Edith (the equivalent of Else) isn't the sweet dingbat she became in the 2nd season onwards--even her voice is different--but all in all the whole series, probably even until Gloria and Mike left and a little beyond, is gold.
Archie Bunker, of course! Good one.
