"The heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives on this country's soil, lou are in the soil of a friendly country now. Therefore rest in peace. You are side by side with the little Mehmets. The mothers who send their sons to the war, wipe your tears away. Your sons are in our bosom, are in peace and will be sleeping in peace comfortably. "Around the turn of the 19th century, 'Turkish' music was so popular that piano manufacturers made special pianos with a 'Turkish stop,' also called the 'military' or 'Janissary' stop. "Despite the best that has been done by everyone – the gallant fighting of the military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of our servants of the state, and the devoted service of our one hundred million people – the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest. Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should we continue to fight, not only would it result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization. Such being the case, how are we to save the millions of our subjects, or to atone ourselves before the hallowed spirits of our imperial ancestors? This is the reason why we have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the joint declaration of the [Allied] powers...." - Emperor Hirohito, surrender broadcast (1945)

“Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Poirot and Capt. Hastings playing *Monopoly* (American commercial board game):
Poirot: "I put a hotel on the Reading Railroad"
Capt: "You cannot put a hotel on a railroad."

Capt: "But that's not in the rules."
Poirot: "Well in that case then the rules are wrong!"
“Many and great are your sins - I know them all so well. You are the enemies of everything good; you take bribes; you refuse justice to the poor. Therefore, those who are wise will not try to interfere with the Lord in the dread day of your punishment. Be good, flee evil—and live! Then the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will truly be your helper, as you have claimed he is. Hate evil and love the good; make your courts into true halls of justice.” – Amos 5:12-15

I was going to read in the Nicomachean Ethics tonight and it turns out my paperback is translated by this guy, Jules Tricot (Sorry, no English Wikipedia page, apparently).
Didn't know anything about him, apparently was just some guy who worked as a functionary for the main French railway system who really liked Aristotle: "According to the Aristotle specialist Augustin Mansion, Tricot « created a personal work, while not pretending to be original, but rather taking his inspiration from better works [...] His great claim to fame is to have completely given the lie to the very inaccurate translations of Barthélémy-Saint-Hilaire »" (Apologies for my crummy translation, it's not my favorite thing, and not very good at mixing languages).
Interesting. I wonder if he was in any way part inspiration for....I think it was in Renoir's Grand Illusion, some guy in a POW camp who was always nattering on about his work on Pindar (the Gk poet).
Occasionally when the Olympics come around I sometimes fool around in Pindar, but I don't really consider Winter Olympics a real thing, so this is my compromise, and maybe I'll learn something too.
