I'm stumped on question #3, mainly because I can't quite parse it. This person killed his father... who had previously killed him in an earlier battle? Is this an immortal?

But the real point is #2, because naturally I jumped out of EH's frying pan into the inevitable CIAS fire. Yes, damn it, I am Merlin! Who, depending on the version of the tale, was trapped by Nimue/Vivianne (the Lady of the Lake) or--in the movie Excalibur--by Morgana le Fay, who really was his disciple.

EH you were so close with that "light changing" question--in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain, the hero, who time-travelled to Camelot from the 1800s, is arrested due to Merlin's having convinced King Arthur (and the mob in general) that the hero's a heretic who should be burned at the stake because he's so strange. The hero famously predicts an eclipse and is considered an amazing wizard, thus sparing his life.

So I really thought you had me there--never heard of that story about Manson! Plus, you'd just asked me about "mythical" so I thought you were on the right track. (Would you call Merlin mythical? I'm not sure why I wouldn't, exactly... the difference between "legendary" and "mythical" is almost nil, and yet I would definitely call him the former, but not the latter. What do you think?)

And while he does have a reputation as a "good" wizard, he does some messed-up things in many accounts of him, including helping along Ygraine's rape by Uther Pendragon, and the abovementioned Twain novel.

#1 was indeed Tiberius, stepson of Augustus and predecessor of Caligula, who was in charge during 33AD when Christ was, depending on one's history or beliefs, crucified.

#2 was close with the name, but Tom Jones is an 18th century book if I'm not mistaken. I was looking for Uncle Tom, from Uncle Tom's Cabin (which was only outsold by the Bible in the 1800s). Perhaps the epithet "Uncle Tom" isn't used much in England? It' s a perjorative used against blacks who are seen to be 'happy' to be subservient or deferential to whites. But the actual character isn't like that at all--he's quite dignified (bearing in mind the time period we're talking about). The book is anti-slavery.

#3 I'd love to give to you, although I'm not 100% sure O'Toole would count as a "T" (nor do I know of him romancing a specific great actress). The answer to the depressing life story with multiple suicides is Ted Hughes, author of The Iron Man, known in the US as The Iron Giant, which was made into the much-loved Brad Bird animated film in the '90s. His wife was Sylvia Plath. His mistress committed suicide after murdering their little daughter, and after Hughes himself had died, his son (by Plath) killed himself too.

I don't mean to be rude, especially coming from a country where we're so notoriously bad at distinguishing any geography outside our own provincial little towns, but I am totally cracking up at the guess of a senator from Mississippi = Teddy Kennedy. That's like... guessing that Princess Diana was from Glasgow. Cute. <3 (The Kennedys are notoriously royalty from Massachusetts, with accents that are fairly unique but very much Boston upper-class stereotypes. Mississippean accents are Southern and usually depicted when a role is a stereotypical redneck, although James Earl Jones is from Mississippi so go figure.)

#1 was Joey Tribbiani, from Friends. It was in the episode "The One with the Embryos," where Monica and Rachel battle Joey and Chandler in a mock gameshow (hosted by Ross) asking who knows the other team better. The guys won, and thus took 'ownership' of Monica/Rachel's apartment. One of my favorite episodes.

#2 is Tyrian, from Game of Thrones. (The "shortcomics" was a pun considering he's a little person, played by Peter Dinklage. Also the "repulsive but not to each other" was a clue re: his siblings Cersei and Jamie, who are... close.) And this is a show I don't even freakin' watch, from a series of books I've never read! Talk about cultural osmosis.

#3 is Mr. Tumnus the Faun from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, who is the first creature Lucy Pevensie meets in Narnia. He invites her home planning to turn her over to the White Witch, but doesn't and is petrified
