Is that going to change when Collins becomes a Captain? ;)

They're definitely going to have to rewrite the Starfleet First Contact regs....

Thanks for the cards and support. Still dealing with many legal and financial issues regarding Mom and her passing. Lots of loose ends to tie up. Very frustrating. Our elder care attorney has been quite helpful -- even though he's also been very expensive! I just want to put all of this behind me and start fresh.
Not sure when I'll be ready for Trek stuff, but will keep you posted. Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season and a great 2016!
Hugs to WES
All my best wishes to you and your loved ones, WES. We miss you.
Best wishes to WES - here's hoping for a speedy return to normality.
I don't believe we missed that beaming back is the oh-so-sensible thing to do, especially as Cheverez is beaming over his own Engineers to continue work on the Naradraen. :smack:
Congrats choie - you got to solve all the problems in one go :bravo:
Time check please. Red Alert sounded at, what, 0300? So now it's 0600?
That sounds about right. The characters are going to need some rest.
Had a chance to enjoy some Booker's whiskey last night - so of course I did: http://www.bookersbourbon.com/
Speaking of patience, this is the longest ten minutes ever.
It's not the shuttle ride that takes the time, it's the unloading of baggage afterwards. The giant kitty ball of wool is causing a few conniptions.
Which Star Trek command personnel are you most like?
http://www.playbuzz.com/joshou10/whi...tm_campaign=ff
I got Kira Nerys
I did, too, but I don't think I'm as hot-tempered as she is.
Colonel Kira Nerys is a product of the Bajoran resistence. Serving as first officer and Bajoran liaison officer on Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Colonel Kira is strongly influenced by the oppression and brutality suffered by her people during the Cardassian Occupation. She was pivotal in helping establish the relationship Bajor has with Starfleet.
Kira is often regarded as quick-to-anger and thought of as hot-headed. She has spent so much of her life fighting that it has almost become her only instinct when confronted. She is deeply loyal to those with whom she serves, and she is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in.
Heh, I go to be Captain Benjamin Sisko - I guess this means you guys work for me now :hist:
You lucky bastard! What was the description for him?
The Sisko:
Captain Sisko, the commanding officer in Star Trek: Deep Space 9, is deeply scarred by the loss of his wife during the Borg incursion at Wolf 359. Years later, he finds himself in command of an alien space station at the furthest reaches of explored space. Nestled along the border of Cardassian space, Sisko leads a group of mismatched crew members to become one cohesive unit that performs courageously during the Dominion War.
Sisko is a critical thinker and highly reflective, some might even say spiritual. He makes calculated decisions most of the time, but he is not above acting impulsively when the situation (or his own personal code) demands it.
Cool - thanks.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard was the star of Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons and four feature films. He served as commanding officer of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D and NCC-1701-E.
Unlike Captain Kirk, Captain Picard is far more calculated in his responses. He is more likely to be patient and weigh his options before making a decision. Picard values rules, principles, and doctrine, and he is an explorer at heart.
Better still! I always preferred Picard to Sisko, all in all.
I'll be visiting my in-laws in Vermont this week and my Internet access may be spotty. I'll try to post at least once daily.
have a safe trip and a good week
Have a fun journey.
Collins' spidey sense starts tingling, and she reaches out with her mind, a trick she learned in Jedi training, to calm Graham and Rangin. She then jumps up onto the table, pulls out her wand and shouts "Specialis Revelio", which causes the two Aelyrr to reveal themselves as Zygons.
:: stunned ::
But... but... how... did you know?
Well, it's nearly Christmas, so I'm likely to be intermittent for the next week or two. Have a fun holiday all.
Likewise, and thanks! A cool Yule to all those so inclined.
It's a Klingon shuttle. They cheat.
AND COLLINS WAS RIGHT!!!!!
We earlier discussed and decided that Starfleet shuttles could go up to Warp 4. This Klingon shuttle can and is going faster.
*looks back into the past*
Griefius Maximus - those are some high speeds being considered there :o Not to mention this shuttle is going faster than the average cruising speed of the Constitution class.
I want one. :D
Nebulae are full of cosmic gases. A shockwave of any kind could compress the gases. How do stars ignite within nebulae without oxygen? All the gases need are to be pushed together enough, and the waves of energy from photon torpedoes could do the trick. Or did I spend all those hours watching "How The Universe Works" for nothing? :dubious:
Nebulae likely to create stars are so intensely compact/dense that nuclear fission is imminent. We haven't gotten any indication that this nebula is that advanced/dense--if it were, the temperature inside the nebula would be so crazy hot that we might as well just let the shuttle enter and burn itself to a crisp, because nothing's coming out of a 15,000,000 Celsius nebula (the temp. at which nuclear fission takes place).
At the Yorktown's current position at the very edge of a nebula, I'm not convinced a torpedo, photon or not, would be enough to compress enough of the nebula to start the process. Think of all the matter flying through space, like large asteroids. Wouldn't they be barraging the nebula's components all the time? But even in a nebula virtually pregnant with star-stuff, an asteroid isn't enough to trigger, uh, labor.
That's what Carl Sagan taught me, anyway! It's possible that Star Trek physics work differently, of course, depending on whatever the writers want.
No, you're right, choie. Think of this nebula as being very much like the one in a certain well-known 1982 science documentary:

A very happy, healthy New Year to you all!
Thanks, EH, and happy new year to everyone too. Weather finally got a bit cold here in NY, though it feels like we're never gonna see any snow.
which would be just fine with me, tyvm. I have three appointments this month, and dealing with my Jazzy in snowy slushy weather is not my idea of fun. I just wish the sun would stay out for a few hours and warm the air up a bit.
Sunny, clear but very cold here today. 2016 is off to a pretty good start.
Miserable, wet, grey and cold. In other words: typical English weather.
Happy New Year all.
Happy 2016, all!
And we have four Trek stamps to look forward to here in the U.S.: http://www.startrek.com/article/firs...oming-for-2016
50 year anniversary this year. Huzzah!!
Don't remind me. Star Trek premiered three weeks after I did.
Game-wise, I'm hoping to give general_urko time to decide whether he wants Graham on board the shuttle mission or not, so hopefully nothing will happen before he gets to post? Sorry CIAS, Velir's very clearly best used on the ship. Collins too, obviously.
pssssh, choie, you're a baby. I was 8 years old when it premiered.
and now I get to feel young again
I think Collins is jumping the gun a bit. Onn's plan is for them to get the shuttle ready to launch, tow it in the tractor beam, and then the Yorktown goes fast to pass and turn around so they're facing the Klingons head-on.Quote:

The Yorktown then swoops toward the Klingons, very close, and then Collins hits them with a very light phaser blast--not the torpedo, which risks destroying the Klingon ship (and thus the Codex).
Simultaneously, the Tesla is released from the tractor beam and coasts underneath the Klingons, unnoticed thanks to the massive Yorktown probably filling the Klingons' viewscreen and Collins's phaser tap.
Thanks to this distraction, the Tesla will be positioned to catch the Klingons by surprise from underneath, using precise small blasts to get rid of their shields.
Anyway that was what Onn planned. If things have changed, that's up to Singh!
You're all doing fine. Keep going!
Down on deck 20, Dobson continues her patrol, oblivious to the goings on elsewhere on her ship.
Pourtash halts the engines, but something goes wrong and the Yorktown goes plaid
Noooooo! Not plaid!
One of the Yorktown's four shuttlecraft is the Kaku, a name suggested (in this thread, posts 520-521) by anyrose. Just tonight, I saw him in an Intuit TurboTax ad:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WNlWyFgLCg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michio_Kaku
By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be missed. :(
RIP Alan Rickman
I was just coming here to post that same line. What a fucking waste and a huge loss. He could do anything, tragedy, comedy, action-adventure, romance... And most importantly he was a lovely person too, from all accounts. This is gutting.
A fine tribute, CIAS - thanks for the link.
The story goes that, for the Die Hard scene where Gruber falls to his death, being filmed from above with a big air bag below, the stunt coordinator said, "OK, let go when I count down to zero. Five... four..." and then purposefully pushed Rickman on "three" to get a better, more startled reaction from him. It worked.
Rickman was appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company when I was in Stratford in late '85, although (still kicking myself) I didn't see any of his plays. I did sit almost close enough to touch him in a cafe while he was having a drink with Juliet Stevenson, with whom he would appear (also doing a great job) in Truly, Madly, Deeply just five years later.
He was also very, very good in the Harry Potter movies and Sense and Sensibility.
Rest in peace, Mr. Rickman, and thanks for all you gave us.
A Spaceport in Scotland...wonders will never cease.
Holy crap, choie! All Kylah has to do is scream. Most of the crew couldn't give two craps about rumors. but they will help a shipmate in trouble.
Well, in addition to being slow-witted from sleepiness, she's genuinely in shock that Zweller is escalating things to this extent. Even back at the Academy, he didn't get physical with her, although it would've been easy for him to under the circumstances. And on top of that, who expects to be attacked by a fellow Starfleet officer on your own ship?
Plus, there's the unknown device that throws her off, too. Any instinct to scream is delayed by the question: what the hell is that thing?
Basically, assume everything happened much faster than it can be described. :)
Tardiness... Sorry folks, a-typical number of deadlines converging, have been slow to post at go time in the game!
How did everyone fare in the storm? We got 2 feet here on Lawn Guylindt with drifts up to 7'
Sunny and clear here today with some crunchy snow underfoot, but none has fallen in the past four days or so. Our son is in Washington, D.C., which got two feet of snow, but he's safe and warm. Wiki has this amazing nighttime satellite picture of the U.S. East Coast from yesterday, showing the blizzard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_P...1-23_0715z.jpg
Clarification please: I thought Onn was going to countdown, and now Nguyen is? Is his 'three' the one on which Collins will fire or does she wait for Onn's?
SidonianGal wrote in post 2192: "Mr. Nguyen, please start the five-second countdown on my mark" and "...she'll deploy her mag-boots and, at last, give the command to begin the countdown. At T-3, you and Collins beam the canisters and fire. At T-0, beam the squad in." So that's what he's doing. Collins should fire on "three."
So, for most of February we'll be on vacation. That's good all around.
For a portion of it, we will be in Antarctica. That's good from a "global warming may destroy this so let's do it now bucket list," but potentially less good from a posting perspective...
From Sunday-Friday next week (flights aside) we should have reasonable Internet access. After that I'll try to provide the group or at the least EH some info on what to expect for the next week or two. Of course if Graham is in the infirmary maybe that makes it easy :/
OK, thanks, general. Have a great trip!
Wow, that sounds amazing, general. Very envious. I hope you'll share some pics!
Nia will miss Graham, of course, but he must recover and you must see what's left of the permafrost. Travel safely and have a wonderful time!
Oooh! That sounds awesome, g_u. Let us know if you run into Dora the Explorer.
Wow, sounds great. Enjoy yourself.
Just watched Galaxy Quest with a friend - at least my third time seeing it. It still holds up very well, and of course Rickman is superb. I noticed this time that Kwan yawns when he steps off the shuttlecraft - he's the first human being in history to set foot on an alien world, and he yawns! LOL.
Thanks all! We have helmet cams, there will be many pictures!
Remember, all, that "Sickbay" is one word.
Another codex is on the front page of Wikipedia today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Sinaiticus
A funny California tourism ad featuring a ST star: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmkSUq_yDHI
I like the one in which he says "Line?"
Hey all within the next three or so days we should have decent satellite connection (stopping at Ushuia which is a hip town) so Graham may be able to put in a brief consciousness cameo. I'll DM EH when I find out the details. First whale sighting this AM!

Excellent! Have fun, general, and happy birthday, WES!
Sooo.... is Collins ever going to have her conversation with Vargas?
Ah, so Collins thinks "it was rude of her" is an excuse for grabbing a senior officer? (Or grabbing anyone, really, but most especially a senior officer.) Apparently it is, for ol' Vargas. Unbelievable. Even if Collins had been right and Nia was "rude," and even assuming the pseudo-military Starfleet really cared about stuff like manners instead of who takes precedence over whom, Vargas still should've chastised her.
But nope. Not even a "don't do it again." Nothing! Just "aw poor dear, please go to beddy bye." Argh.

choie makes a good point. I'll add a bit to that conversation.
Ha! :P But seriously, as aggravating as it is (on Nia's part--but she isn't here to see it), I think it's perfectly in character for him not to say anything at this point. He didn't upbraid her at the time and he'd actually witnessed it the whole thing. Plus, Security folks do stick together--the thin redshirt line.
Sorry about leaving off the writing credits. My bad.
True. As I saw it, he didn't say anything at the time because (a) his initial reaction was simple annoyance, (b) he was in a hurry, and (c) he didn't want to upbraid his immediate subordinate in the presence of non-Security personnel.
No worries.
I'm on the road with my family this weekend and will be able to post probably only once a day, if that. Thanks for your patience.
Oh bloody hell, I wanted Nia to go visit Graham before going to bed. I thought I'd have time after Johnson posted.
Everyone, please assume Nia went to the sickbay and gave Graham the flower he gave her. When he wakes up, he should see that. Also envision an awesome scene of Nia at his bedside saying something fantastic. Embellish however you want. :D
Or you could...yanno...create the scene and I'll post it within the last Ajay post. EH willing, of course.
By all means, please do. Or SidonianGal could just write it as a flashback - perhaps musing on her visit to Sickbay while she sits at the Helm.
Consider the character name, and consider what else was in that post.
[Emily Litella]Never mind.[/EL]
Reading Is Fundamental!
Cute, EH -- so The Martian is canon now!
If I may jump in after my alter ego's post... Have we heard of this Ambassador Phillips before? I don't want Nia asking "Ambassador who with the what now?" if we're supposed to know who this bigwig is.
(To clarify, I mean, have we met him/her before? Or is this just a cameo while s/he negotiates w/the Aelyrr?)
Cameo. Never mentioned before.
In-game, you can always consult the Library Computer for questions like that.
^ Thanks! I'd just hate to have Nia ask "Who is Ambassador Phillips?" and the answer turn out to be something like, "Amb. Phillips was on the Yorktown last week." Characterwise, there are things I don't know that Nia (or Kylah) should know--like, what cabins they're in, or the name of the president of the UFP--that would make them look utterly imbecilic if they had to ask about it. So it's a judgment call. :)
Re: Rangin/Ajay... It strikes me that at some point Kylah and Rangin are going to have to communicate in other ways besides sending each other food. :D
Hi all...I'll be back in the world tomorrow and look forward to catching up with the latest and greatest in the Yorktown. Naturally I'll share a few penguin pictures too!
Yay! Welcome back!
Huzzah!
Yay. Glad you had a good trip. I like penguies. Can't wait to see pics
Good to have you back. Looking forward to seeing the photos
It's easy to get confused sometimes.
What?

That's adorable.
Remarkable NASA images of the Moon passing in front of the Earth: http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/...-face-of-earth
Is Goddard the one staring at the Sun?
Don't know. Something here?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goddard
That's an amazing image, EH. Strange how flat the moon seems with that shadow! To ask a probably stupid question, why are there far fewer apparent craters on the dark side of the moon? Is it just that it's not lit up as brightly as we see the other side?
Now to the game... here we have another example of a question I can't think how to ask in-character without Nia seeming either a) blind or b) inexperienced. I'm not sure if Nia and the other two are actually in the Brig, and where they are in relation to the cells. Can she see each Klingon? Can they see each other? If this were real life Nia would already know this because she's got two working eyes. And also because she's presumably been down in the Brig before.
I wish this were an old text adventure game. Then I would simply type:
> INSPECT BRIG
Hm. But I should be able to figure out a solution. Gonna mull this over for a few.
They have a theory for the smooth side of the moon - that it actually formed with a twin that just smooshed in that side and spread out. The moon's crust on the far side is thicker than the near side, which explains the lack of volcanic scars.. More articles.
No one's quite sure, although there are several good theories, as anyrose notes. Some interesting info here, and the same 2015 images of the Earth and Moon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_si...on#Differences
Good questions. I'll clarify this in the game thread.
Assuming Klingons have as basic an understanding of the Federation that it does of them, won't as least some of them find it odd that someone in Ops Yellow would be questioning them instead of someone in Security Red? I mean, that's like McCoy grilling the suspect before Briscoe and Greene read him his rights, no?
That's command yellow, thank-you-very-much! :) Anyhoo, Briscoe and Logan--the only partner I'll accept for Briscoe--have already questioned them to no avail, so it's time to bring out Nia and her big guns. :D (Plus, red-wearing security officer St. Croix will be there.)
It just struck me: what's Collins doing now? Is she meeting with Cooper? Is she back on the Bridge?
I wonder if she'd be as amenable as St. Croix is to having Nia mock-yell at her.
Collins is still on the Bridge at the Security console, I believe.
Okiedoke, thanks. I misremembered her alternate plans if Graham hadn't woken up soon.
I'm not sure I can forgive you giving Kylah a guy named Soerjosoemarno to interact with. I have to cut and paste his name every time because there's no way I can remember how to spell that! :P
Lumch with Cooper was "yesterday". Today Collins is having a normal watch. And she'd play along, albeit more dramatically than St Croix, or maybe she'd give Onn an opportunity to exact punishment, all for the benefit of the audience of course.
eta - while watching Onn's cosmetic transformation, she'd admire the idea, wishing she'd thought of it, and curse her Irish/Scottish heritage.
:) I've lost count of days, I'm as bad as Kylah.
I wish Collins were around! Maybe we'll get lucky and she'll get to relieve Kawecki in the Brig.
Next time I hope you use Jones or Fox! :D And just imagine how all the players would be cursing if we'd kept Nia's full name. Everyone's apostrophe key would be worn out by now.
Sorry I've not been around, life's been busy. :)
I'm just wondering what on earth gave Villa the impression Graham and Rangin were friends. Was she not around during one of the multiple fights they had in Sickbay while Kylah was recovering? :D Looking forward to seeing Velir's reaction to that message!
Sometimes even the CMO can be misinformed.
Having the boss stop by to check on you hardly counts as a visitor. Boss only wants to know when you're coming back to the office.
Technically, Collins is Graham's boss, too.
I'm surprised Collins didn't just stay in there and say "Hi, am I intruding?" Then whatshisname NPC would've left and you guys'd be talking already. For someone so anxious to see him, she sure zipped out in a hurry!
She knows they're roommates. She's giving them bro-time.
Your next two posts should be the last for "today" in ship's time. I'd like to move the plot forward to the next morning and eventually the Watney rendezvous. Thanks.
Two posts?
Drat, Rangin is still supposed to annoy Graham in Sickbay and then have dinner with Kylah today.
Oh wait - he's getting smooched by Bennett (isn't she already involved with someone else?) and Kylah is still ill.
I'm probably good til tomorrow then.
Yeah, I had to make Kylah ill in order to explain why she didn't visit Graham or see Velir, or get her communicator fixed, none of which would've been possible in two posts. Hopefully we'll pick things up tomorrow!
And don't get me started on that hussy Bennett and Mr. "out of sight, out of mind" Graham! :)
you shoulda switched accounts for that last sentence, kiddo
Let me know (that is, through Thalen or Park in the game thread) if you'd like your character to play a role in Fujishiro's funeral service - a favorite reading, song, a personal tribute, etc.
Yeah, that's not Collins' style, but thanks for asking. She's not even sure if her request (which she has yet to make) to be let off watch early to attend will be approved
Hey maybe she'll already be off watch? We rarely know our schedules (unless I'm missing an announcement or somethin'). I think Collins is the only one of the active PCs--well, maybe Rangin, since he's visited her the most--who'd be likely to say anything or do something for the service. Of the other PCs, Kylah knew her only briefly, Graham never met her while she was conscious, and Nia... hmm, I suppose Nia could've known her, but it's unlikely. T'Var would probably participate too, and I imagine she will. Poor Fujishiro.
Fair points. Assume all your characters will be off-watch, or would be excused early, if they ask.
Here's an interesting piece on the women who wrote ST:TOS episodes (including "This Side of Paradise"). More than you might've expected for 1960s Hollywood, including the inimitable D.C. (Dorothy) Fontana: http://www.blastr.com/2016-3-16/meet...riginal-series
Cool
Also, the original USS Enterprise 11-foot shooting model from ST:TOS is getting a refit at the Smithsonian. The first video deals with the nacelles, in particular; it's followed by a link to a longer second video which is more of an overview on the entire project. Both well worth a look: http://redshirtsalwaysdie.com/2016/0...nacelle-refit/
Wow, that's a great find, thanks EH. Love the URL too. :D
We're proving it wrong, though, aren't we...?
Would, say, three more posts apiece be enough to bring us up to Fujishiro's funeral?
That's fine w/me, FWIW! Just gotta get Kylah over to rehearsal. (Where would she go, btw? She asked Thalen but he, alas, seems to have forgotten she's a newbie to the ship. :D) Thanks!
Technical question: How would you say these musicians would access their music? Would it be downloaded from the nearest computer with library access? Or could Kylah download it in her room and just transfer it to her fellow musicians via the 23rd-century equivalent of Bluetooth? Or would she just print it out, old school? Sheet music would probably be difficult to read on a datapad; how would you turn the pages? By swiping downwards?
...Unless we posit that there are specific types of musician datapads that are larger and, to get really sci-fi about it, the devices can be synched with the instrument to scroll down when necessary; no interaction necessary, which would sure be a boon to anyone who knows what a pain-in-the-neck page-turning can be.
Sorry, folks. I was at a Mensa con this weekend and was too distracted by friends, food, and beer to bother posting.
No prob, anyrose, and welcome back.
choie, rehearsal could be in a crew lounge somewhere. I think we've seen sheet music in use as late as the TNG era, so you could go with that, if you wish.
Collins' back is to the Mess entrance, so unless Cooper waves at Onn and Graham, or they come over to the table, Collins wouldn't know they've come in.
Would our characters don dress uniforms for this funeral?
If we get the yes we can always describe our extra braiding and so on. :)
Hadn't thought of that. They weren't worn at Spock's funeral in STII:TWOK.
Did those red jackety things have a dress version?
No. IRL they didn't wear dress uniforms because... Wardrobe didn't make any!
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9_8nY_LQL3w/maxresdefault.jpg
Apologies all, a few minor PC issues being annoying.
No prob. Good to have you back.
Just FYI, the version of the Pavane I linked to in the thread was the closest I could come to the trio of instruments used in the concert.
But if you want to hear the version I had in mind when picking the Pavane in the first place, here it is--for String Quartet and Guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOXZy_41FWs&t=6s
Couldn't find a lute, not surprisingly, but a guitar is close enough. In this version the guitar has the melody and the strings begin the piece with the pizzicato (plucked) accompaniment. My favorite part is at 3:01, when the cello--and I think the viola doubles it--starts a counterpoint against the melody (i.e., the cello plays a new melodic line that is different but works with, and is played along with, the original). Really a lovely arrangement.
Unfortunately apparently none of the string players on the Yorktown crew wanted to play with Kylah on such short notice. :P
Thanks, choie. I really do like that piece. Has a mysterious palace-intrigue aura to it, I've always thought.
You're very welcome--thank you for letting Kylah participate. :) Gabriel Fauré is one of the best when it comes to gorgeous melodies and mood-setting--if not the best, and I'm hard-pressed to come up with another unless it's Schubert or Debussy.
My first choice for this particular event would've been something I think is so achingly beautiful I'd want it played at my funeral, and I'm not even Christian: Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine.
The section once the sopranos kick in at around 1:10 to the darker resolution of the melody than we've been hear at 1:19 is gutting. And from 2:10 - 3:12 you'll hear what, to me, is simply the most beautiful, bittersweet choral music ever. I can't think of anything that compares to this, chorally speaking.
Also? He wrote this at 19 years old. NINETEEN.
(Oh... but I couldn't use it for Fujishiro's funeral because the instrumental arrangements don't do it justice. It needs the vocals.)
As long as I'm foisting choral music on you guys, I might as well mention that EH's reference to Revelation 21:1 ("...And I saw a new Heaven") has been set beautifully by Edgar Bainton. I used to sing for the St. Patrick's Cathedral choir (the one on 5th ave here in NYC) about four years after my mom died, and I hadn't really started letting myself mourn yet. When we were assigned this piece, I nearly fell apart during the service while singing when we came to the "and God shall wipe away all tears..." section (at 2:37 in the video). Such a touching line.
Great choices for the readings, albeit awfully heavy on the religious stuff for Star Trek. I guess the Big Non-Religion mandate didn't occur till the TNG-era? I suppose Fujishiro might've been super-religious and it's only right to respect her beliefs now that she's pushing up the daisies.
I'd venture a guess that "organized" religion is a thing of the past, but individuals still have the option to practice and observe as they wish. IIRC, the TOS Enterprise had a chapel.
And everyone had a Chapel. :D
Yes, it's clear that these are Fujishiro's beliefs. Religion didn't feature much in TOS (although the bride in "Balance of Terror" was seen praying) but did later, esp. among Bajorans and Klingons.
This mission is winding down. Let's have no more than, say, five more posts from each player. If you need fewer, let me know via PM when you've posted your last. Thanks.
We should end the thread on Wednesday, on its "birthday"
Our own Capt. Singh probably knew this story from her military history lessons: http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/04/us/sik...ban/index.html
I'm very please to read that. The Army is respecting the individual. Nice step forward.
Good line! But one quick note: much as I love Graham as the gallant pit bull, Zweller actually confronted Kylah alone, without Ferguson. Fergie was left behind in the corner--you can see in EH's most recent post that he waves to Kylah from afar. Maybe you can think of Zweller and Rangin as being the "pack"?Quote:

Mission #4, "Codex Aelyrr," is now concluded - my thanks to you all. I'd like to take a week off to recharge my batteries (and finish a speech I have to give next week). We'll resume with Mission #5 next Friday.
In the meantime, as with earlier missions, five names mentioned in the mission are drawn from the works of an important sf writer. Any guesses on the author or the names?
The Aelyrrian names sounded Asimovian to me ,or possibly Nivenian
Rats, if it's scifi, there goes my guess about Jim Butcher having inspired this. (He wrote Codex Alera and it seemed like too similar a title to be a coincidence. But I was wrong!)
EH I posted after you (I was busy writing as you were, I guess) so mine is currently the last in the thread. Maybe you or CIAS can move it to its proper place? Or just delete the post and copy it to a new one, so yours is the fitting final post of the thread.
Thanks very much to everyone for an interesting, and rather varied, mission.
Actually, he'd be better off moving his own post to the end, since g_u has now posted his final thought.
Done and done. Thanks, all.
Never heard of Codex Alera, FWIW.
+1 thanks yet again EH
I think Graham is more "paranoid" than prescient - based in part on his experience with his sister Fiona he's convinced that predatory-types seek out those they know / sense are weak or alone...He's assuming Kylah is, so he's biased to assume the worst anytime anything looks amiss. (And her final comments to Rangin validate his paranoia, at least as far as he's concerned...)
With that said, sorry for misreading!
Well that was certainly an interesting beat to end the Chapter on. Thanks once again to EH, and I'm already looking forward to the next part.
I'm not sure about the writer but I'll probably kick myself for not knowing it when it does get revealed.
No other guesses...?
'Twas Arthur C. Clarke.
Alveron - "Rescue Party," his first (and I think) best short story
Eris - "Second Dawn"
Clindar - "Expedition to Earth"
Morgan - The Fountains of Paradise
Garnett - "The Sentinel," the short story which partly inspired 2001: A Space Odyssey
In our mission, the first three were Aelyrr, and the last two were Capt. Singh's friends - fellow captains who came aboard while the Yorktown was in Anubis orbit.
Our new mission is now underway here: http://www.mellophant.com/forums/sho...and-Capos-quot
I confess to not having read very much Clarke
I'm guessing that, in this case, "Capos" does not refer to the gadgets used to raise the pitch of guitars.
We shall see....
Isn't anyone else going to post in the new game?
Good grief, that snuck up
Erm...time to figure out what Rangin is up to.
Sorry too. My aunt passed away on Saturday and the funeral/shiva day #1 was yesterday, so I didn't have much free time.
Also, due to the week-long time shift, I've had to coordinate ideas to fill in the details of how Nia/Graham have dealt with the awkward way they left things at the reception, and how Kylah has managed to avoid everyone for a whole week. But that's pretty much taken care of.
Oh, I'm sorry, choie. My condolences.
And mine, choie. Take care and come back whenever you're able. Very best wishes from us all.
Condolences as well.
Thanks guys. She'd been sick for a while, but it's still rough, of course. The family members of my parents' generation are almost all gone now, except for my uncle. Certainly makes me aware of my own age.
My dad turns 81 today, and had a minor health crisis over the weekend (he's fine now). I know what you mean.

25 for me. An odd mix of the well-known and the obscure. I also disagree with their answer about the origins of the Klingon language (although I correctly guessed the answer they were looking for).

Mel is telling me Mission 5 is a closed thread...is anyone else getting that? (Or perhaps Rangin has prevailed and Graham has been transferred off the Yorktown...)
I think whoever locked it meant to lock "Codex of Aelyrr" but missed
That's weird--I thought Codex Aelyrr was closed yesterday, whereas this was closed today. How have we offended thee, O lord?
Edited to add, HA! Just saw Rangin mentally assessing Nia as Graham's "arm candy." I sure wish he'd said that to her face!
Well I never. Should be unlocked now. :(
