But I just got this email from a place I do, which wants me to waste a bunch of time doing some survey, so I open the message, thinking "Hey, maybe I can get some stuff!"

Here's the come-on: "Upon completion of the survey, you will have the option to enter a drawing to win three months of free towel membership. We will award this to 20 people, so make sure to enter the drawing."

Yep, uh, no. Being an adult, I already own towels, and being not in South Park, my towels are just fine not having membership.

Actually I have a good question.

So, sometimes I put one of those fruit-"flavored" malt liquor "drinks" (carbonated variety!) in the inside pocket of a windbreaker, when I need to have two hands to do shit or whatever, and it pretty often spills all over my jacket and shit.

I don't try to, but it usually does.

Sothe stench of this is fucking hard to get out, but the stench is extremely powerful, and I can't afford to be running laundry every few days just because of one coat that got some shit spilled on it.

Whatever, I don'tcare about thar. But IMO and from some not-inconsiderable experience, it doesn't smell like alcohol. Certainly not beer which IMO is unmistakeable, just a weird, sweet smell.

As for alcohol, we Americans have seen all too well the toll that alcoholism takes. Temperance and prohibition both had their heyday here, but we remain somewhat ambivalent about alcohol even now. There are legal limits as to when and where you can legally buy and consume alcohol, and drinking during the workday is much less common now than it was in, say, the Sixties. As a government employee, I'm not even allowed to drink alcohol during the workday, but I can't say I chafe under that restriction. "Please consume responsibly" and "all things in moderation" are pretty much the norm in polite society (although there are always exceptions - college binge drinking springs to mind).

I remember going to Vegas and seeing people casually strolling down the street drinking a beer or a cocktail. It looked odd, but in fact I saw less public drunkenness there than I have in places with very stict liquor laws. It's pretty much all culture, I think.

Here's a legitimate question: I have been begrudgingly, biting and scraping, trying to get used to my new pipe.

Not in love with the sanded, smooth veneer -- it doesn't seem to take to smashing against concrete or other hard surfaces as well as my other one did, without getting all scuffed.

As a disciplinary matter, I wouldn't get my ass tanned, but I could be reprimanded, docked pay or ultimately fired if I kept at it. I am rarely ever tempted to drink during the work day and have never actually done so, so it's not a big deal for me.

I would like to know where and how to acquire a copy of the unpublished Kerouac French novel, *Sur le chemin.* I just now came across this very interesting little short interview with somebody who has kind of unearthed a shitload of information on Kerouac's relationship to the language.

Apparently he didn't speak English until he was 6. I didn't know that. I knew he spoke Joual (kind of a hillbilly Canadian French, I guess), as a kid, from Clark Coolidge's essays about JK, but I didn't know Lowell, MA was kind of a little enclave to a somewhat large degree. Also, Jen Kirkman, who is a fucking foxy funny girl is from Lowell, MA, IIRC.

So I was all psyched to make the ILL bitchez go get me a copy, but it seems this is still unpublished. That's weird. Obviously people want to read this. Idiots.

(The interview I linked to is from a French newspaper -- it's really interesting, though, so if you can't read it, I'd recommend putting it into one of those translator things, or whatever they are).

Uh....I consider that a benefit. My mother came over Sunday to go for a walk and I showed off my chromebook so she wouldn't be all like "omg I wish my laptop was that small" and stuff and I insisted we sit outside for her to test it out.

Actually I was kind of peeved she half-smashed a beautiful garden/wolf/whatever spider web. OK, so, I gave my mom the "spider chair" -- I didn't know at the time. Those are my first line of defense against LIVE box elders making it into my house. Not that the latter are harmful, in se, but they are noisy and make a blood-colored spatter when (not IF, mind you), you smash them.

But, yes, I have noticed an odd population of live indoor insects this year. Coincident with me closing, for some damned reason, my sliding porch door for the first time in many months (there's a screen, but it can be compromised), there have been a few outrageous spiders in my bathroom. Coming out of the woodwork, I guess. Not so outrageous, just a big and a small daddy longlegs. Those I kill. Naw, not sorry at all -- they are ground spiders and so don't help me in my quest to minimize flying pests.

All right, fine -- in the end I took your advice. It happened by accident -- the local tobacconist showed me his Missouri Meerschaums AND when I had made the sale, maybe because it was early in the morning and I was all clear-eyed, buttoned-down, tweed sportcoated, he brought out the basket.

We don't use military time in speech but all bus time tables, flights etc are in it and most phones/clocks etc then to be calibrated to it too.

Hey speaking of....nothing, really, but what do you think is a good size (these are US sizes, natch) for a men's raincoat (designed to be worn over a sport jacket or a suit). Sort of like a trench coat, but without all that belt an epaulets and double-breasted mishegas. Just a regular raincoat I can wear over a jacket.

None of my coats have sizes in a little tag in them -- or I couldn't find them.

I did some checking out a few men's stores the other day and all the sales people were like .... "let's try a 40L" (the "L" means "long" -- I have very long arms, like a gorilla).

They didn't have anything I liked, or the one nice article was like $400 USD, which is ridiculous, to me, especially given the state of the rest of my wardrobe.

So, like 6'3", 220 lbs, 36/37 length sleeves, and typical fat-guy muscles (one of which group of said are shoulders are pretty big, I guess).

So I finally figured, a 42L 3/4 length raincoat would be good enough.

Even if it's marginal in tightness on the shoulders, with a coat on underneath, I guess it's worth it to not have some balloon-effect around the midriff, as is often the case with L/XL sizes to try to get the right sleeve length.

this I pulled trigger on -- even though I think the picture looks odd, and I wanted tan/khaki color, I figure taking the liner out will make the collar look regular, and I wouldn't wear the liner anyway.

All right, I have a real weird question. I think I might have straight-up hallucinated receiving a copy of Ernest Davis's *Representations of Commonsense Knowledge* in the mail, doing something with it, and misplacing it. It's a very flawed, in some cases merely incomplete, in other cases wrong, AI textbook I ordered from Amazon because a copy was like $0.99 and I wanted to not have to photocopy the bibliography and a few other things and bother filing it.

I'm going to prefer to believe this never happened -- I'm not a complete loon or nutter, but most of my nocturnal dreams are vivid representations of ordinary things, mostly about books and stuff, in great detail and of mundane quality. Anyone can relate?

Thanks for saying that. I had an epiphany while having a catnap this early evening, that basically I need to lighten up. Basically just calm the fuck down and maybe all these perceived ills will become things I can put in my two categories (viz., "my problem" and "not my problem"). I suppose everything has a way of becoming "my problem" when it annoys one. I think deep breathing, more exercise, more sleep, less alcohol, less tobacco.

Yeah, it's just the standard condo common-area -- three- or four-hundred individual units over....I don't know, maybe 80 acres, and up by the office manager there's a pretty nice wifi, pool, tennis courts, small gym, sauna, hot-tub. Nothing special, but sometimes people who get to me just get obnoxious. What if you had an internet forum and stormfront came in being all buttholes? Same thing.

Actually I do appreciate both you talking about me. (Not a joke! Sometimes it's nice to just know some people are listening. Yeah, corny as hell, but whatever). Sometimes people get on your nerves, and you forget to take a few minutes for yourself to chill out. Not being a hippie I don't smoke weed or listen to Charles Mingus or collect pets, so I only have myself and not any hobbies. I take the stuff I do not has hobbies but as vocations, so unlike people who have a bunch of hobbies, I just have (a) drinking beer (b) watching a small handful of TV shows (c) chatting online about nothing. Trust me, playing piano or organ is not relaxing -- it's a challenge. Reading through some uncharted territory from a bibliography is not "fun."

I went ahead and bought some "boots" about three hours ago or so. these. So, whatever. Closest place I couldn't find that wasn't in a mall, and even though the clerk was a total cunt, i was like "fine, just get me something that fit -- I don't give a shit. i'm not going to wear sneakers with a sportcoat anymore. so, just make it work!"
