Thanks, anyrose!
Incidentally, the latest issue of Naval History magazine has an interesting cover article on U.S. aircraft carriers in the Pacific during WW2. There are several references to the carrier USS Yorktown.

Happy birthday, ds9writer (one day late)!
Back from vacation. My brain is still in a fuzz due to jet lag, but I'll catch up in-game soon.
Wow. How did you figure it out from so few clues...?
Oops, I assumed we had already reached orbit.
A nitpick: Please avoid the phrase "away team," folks. It dates to ST:TNG and not TOS, when a "landing party" would be sent to visit the surface of a world, and a "boarding party" would be sent to another ship or space station. Thanks.
I am amusing myself with the idea that all these "(untranslatable)"'s are curse words.
Well that would certainly change the tone of things. :D
Heeheehee. Not a bad idea!
I was thinking the very same thing, anyrose!
I'm going out of town (camping with my Cub Scout son) and will post again late Sunday, if all goes well. Hope you all have a good weekend.
Mosquitos probably helped Washington win at Yorktown: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...r=emailarticle
There's a What's your favorite Star Trek uniform style? poll over on the SDMB, if any of you're interested.
Thanks, Pleonast. I voted.

You're all doing well, but I think maybe you need a little nudge at this point in the game.
Consider what you have heard (from only one person, remember) about the various Banij governments. What inferences can or should you draw from that info, and what questions have as yet not been answered?... Why would no recent Zheng rays have been detected?... Consider what so much debris in orbit might signify... Why do the Banij sometimes stare, or tremble? What do any of the "[untranslatable]" words actually mean? No one has asked any of the Banij about these things... One of the six player characters has particular insight into something important you've already learned about the Banij System. He or she should do something with that knowledge... A thorough geological scan of Banij Prime itself has not, to my knowledge, yet been done... Finally, Vargas was described to you all as something of a martinet, but he has not really been one. Why might that be?
Some or all of these points might be important. You may wish to take further action, and/or discuss them among yourselves, with superior officers, or with the Banij themselves.
I hope you're all having fun (as I certainly am!). Constructive criticism, feedback or fulsome praise is always welcome, either in this thread or via PM. Thanks.
Minor note, for any fans of TOS, there is a series of episode by episode discussions in the Arts and Entertainment forum. Here is the newest one The Ultimate Computer S2, Ep53 Please join in if of interest.
Anyone who paid attention to where Pourtash served before the Yorktown might be able to guess that episode had an influence on me. ;)
Greetings, fellow players. Elendil's Heir has encouraged me to share a personal challenge I am facing. I was diagnosed with diabetes on Monday. I saw the doctor today and I'm in pretty bad shape. I'm now on a very strict diet and four medications. This has been a shock, but I'm trying to be as positive as I can. I may just learn to love healthy foods and pricking my finger twice a day. <g> This online Trek game has and will keep me going in the days and months ahead. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate! WES
Thanks, WES! I know everybody here joins me in wishing you all the best, and in hoping for your better health soon and for the rest of your (very long) life. Take good care of yourself!
Good luck WES, I have several friends and even family members battling what you are battling. It is not good but if you keep on top of it, it is manageable. They keep making advances lately to improve the day to day life of people with diabetes. You might want to PM member Angua who has been living with diabetes for years. She seems to be doing very well with it.
And we're very lucky to have you here for our game, WES! I have a few family members with diabetes as well. Keeping on top of things medication and diet wise will help tremendously. Good luck. :)
Thanks so much for the support and encouraging words. Very much appreciated! Trying to get my dr to prescribe a generic cholesterol med instead of the very expensive one that my insurance plan does not cover. SIGH Are we having fun yet? Sure wish I could beam Dr. McCoy directly to my house for a consultation!
Thanks again!

don't you mean "four"? Where's Pev? I thought he was coming with us.Quote:
The other three - Brownlock, Hayes and Collins - have not yet arrived when Dr. Villa, the CMO, walks in with a large medical carrying case.
Small Federation quality Toolkit for Engineering Away Missions
Standard Tool Pouch
1. Hand Welder, a modified Phaser for quick welding, drilling & cutting purposes. See Cutter Beam for larger example.
2. GravDriver or Micro-gravatic rotational tool. Locks in on fastener for applying specific torque in or out. Delaney prefers this older tool to the newish Sonic driver. Though he sees where eventually the Sonic Driver will completely replace the trusty GravDriver
3. Small Handheld Graviton emitter: Allows for some remote gravatic manipulations. Primitive compared to the example from DS9. Makes for a good blunt instrument for driving larger nails or spikes.
4. Laser micrometer is a specialized instrument used for non-contact measurement and control.
5. Small hammer.
6. Small conventional top of the line tools.
7. High powered, long lasting light with small headband.
8. Small telescoping tool arm & Small Mirror & various bits
9. Duct Tape: 22nd century equivalent of small roll of duct tape.
10. Small epoxy set for variable materials.
11. Small pencil, small china market & chalk
12. Small bits of conductive material and wires for quick fixes.
13. Small selection of various fasteners.
14. Mini-electro magnets.
Pocket/Belt/over the shoulder
His pocket reader with tech manual data cartridges.
Swiss Army Knife & Leatherman.
Engineering Tricorder of course acts as variety of meters.
Optionals, used mainly for power plants and to help on other ships.
Hyperspanner: One of its many uses included repairing communication systems, relinking and bypassing the circuit boards of electrical systems.
Flux coupler
Micro-resonator is a tool used by Starfleet engineers to degauss relatively small devices. For larger objects, a magneton scanner could accomplish the same task.
Magnetic Resonance adjusting tool {as seen in Jeffrey Tubes}
Wow. I said a dozen! Are items 1-12 the most important to you (actually, 1-13, since the tricorder would be slung over your shoulder), or do you want to narrow the list more selectively?
I'll re-edit the post above. Many of the items are the little things that find their way into a tool pouch. I speak from experience here. No tech/engineer would have only 12 items in his pouch. Also some of these items would actually be on a belt or in a pocket. For what it is worth, my smallish tool bag in the Navy probably had 18 tools and dozens of miscellaneous little parts and tape. It also probably weighed 15-20 lbs. I think this one would weight less by a good bit. The utility knives is something almost all techs and mechanics carry. I always had a Swiss Army knife back in those days. When I was an HVAC mech just after the Navy I had both a Swiss Army and a Leatherman knife.
I reorganized though for optional items used more for going to another ship and listing pocket/belt items.
OK, thanks. The edited list looks more feasible.
Apropos of nothing, but perhaps interesting to my fellow Trekkers:
Here’s one way to try to get a handle on just how immense our little corner of the cosmos really is, as described by Prof. Jay M. Pasachoff of Williams College-Hopkins Observatory in Williamstown, Mass. in his book Astronomy: From the Earth to the Universe (Saunders College Publishing 1983). I've paraphrased a bit:
Imagine the Solar System is scaled down and placed on a map of the United States. The Sun is a hot ball of gas taking up all of Rockefeller Center, a kilometer wide, in the heart of Manhattan in New York City. Mercury, then, is a sphere four meters wide in mid-Long Island. Venus is a ball ten meters around, about one and a half times farther away. The Earth is only slightly bigger, located near Trenton, N.J., while Mars is half that size, five meters wide, located past Philadelphia, Pa.
Jupiter, the next planet out from the Sun, is a hundred meters across (about the size of a baseball stadium), past Pittsburgh on the Ohio border. Saturn, with its rings, is a little larger than Jupiter, and is beyond Cincinnati, toward the Indiana state line. Uranus and Neptune are each about thirty meters across, about the size of a baseball infield, and are near Topeka, Kans. and Santa Fe, N.M., respectively. Pluto, about the size of Mercury, is near Los Angeles, forty times the distance of the Earth from the Sun.
And occasionally, a comet sweeps in from Alaska....
The first baby steps towards warp drive....

I imagine that as she walks away, she hears the Soj and the Deq she was sitting between start to talk to each other, and that Collins would pick up pieces of that conversation; but I'm not allowed to say that's what happened. :( ;)
You can ask if that's what's happening, and I just might agree with you....
Does it? (I guess it's too late now - we're back on the Yorktown)
eta - Could maybe Ensign Cooper be in the gym when Collins goes there after failing to get to sleep?
Heh. Yes, the chances are good that Ens. Cooper will be in the gym.
According to page 1 of this thread, his name is Ben.Quote:

FYI, I'll be out of town over Thanksgiving, and probably won't post between tomorrow night and Friday night. Hope our American players enjoy the holiday.
Wishing everyone a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!
Trek and Tolkien are both good fun, but should be mixed with caution.
I have returned and am catching up! It feels like I've spent the past month bedridden. Yeesh.
Welcome back! Hope you're feeling much better. We missed you.
So you can - thank you!
Welcome back, Zuul!
Thanks for sharing, anyrose. That was great!

Heh. Good stuff.
Somehow I doubt Mr. Collins will be signing up: http://red.shirt.society.fanspace.com/

I'll be out of town for the better part of a week, with uncertain Internet access, so the game will now go on hiatus through Dec. 30. Thanks for your playing and helpful feedback so far; I hope you're having as much fun with this as I am. Merry Christmas to those who will be celebrating it, and best wishes to those who will not!
Merry Christmas to all. Safe travels.
I'm having so much fun with this! So glad to be a part of it.
Looking forward to more fun and adventure in the new year.
Here's hoping travel goes well for everyone who is.
Likewise, thanks! Just got back from Vermont safe and sound tonight.

Thanks so much for the birthday greetings. Had a nice day -- despite more snow and ice. This weather pattern is getting very old very fast. SIGH
Re: anyrose's post 652:
Collins quietly signals Delaney "Bring the others and join us, I want to know what your equipment says is in this room" she indicates the supposedly empty room to Pourtash and Hayes[.]
Remember that the Captain named Ens. Pourtash to command the boarding party.
As I'm about to go on a family trip and won't have my notes with me, the game will go on hiatus until Feb. 23. Hope you're having fun, and thanks for your patience!
Have fun!
You're kind of leaving us at cliff-hanger, you know. :D
Oh, you noticed, did you...?
I recently noticed this ring in a catalog we get: http://www.naturesjewelry.com/itemdy...rsearch=j61511
Just read this Tolkien-inspired picture book, which I got from the library - the artist, Donato Giancola, has a different take on things than Lee, Howe, etc., but some of his imagery is quite arresting: http://www.amazon.com/Middle-Earth-V...8520807&sr=1-1
I guess we'll see if Mr. Pourtash agrees with you.
I thought this game looked like a blast. A group of people use their computers to simulate a starship bridge crew:
Anybody else wanna post anything in the game thread?
Zuul (Ens. Pourtash) has not responded to several PMs, and ds9writer (Dr. Brownlock) finally emailed me to say that he wished to withdraw from the game. I'm inclined to run their characters myself until the end of this mission, and then bring in two more players from among those who expressed an interest when we began in July. Or I could bring in two new players immediately, either to run those characters or two different ones.
Any thoughts?
I vote for bringing in two new characters ASAP
Zuul is on a LOA for now, iirc. They won't be back for a spell.
New players sound like a good idea. If you have interested people, bring them on board.
Also players, please explore the rest of Mellophant. There is more then just games here. Also a lot of other games. Not just RPGs.
I am open to either idea, though I think bringing in two new characters right now would be best. Gives two people who've expressed an interest a chance to play.
So sorry to lose two of our original crew members, though.
Mea culpa, guys. I got home from my trip and just utterly crashed from a combination of things. If it's okay, I do want to continue playing Pourtash.
Thanks for your feedback, everyone, and welcome back, Zuul. By all means, continue to play Pourtash. I'm sure you'll be more involved from now on, or will let me know ASAP when you can't or won't be. I remind everyone that Rule 12 provides, "Please check the setup and game threads at least every other day."
I'll find another player to either pick up Dr. Brownlock's character, or to develop another medico type.
Something to share from the early days of the Internet. Author unknown:
"FIFTY WAYS TO KILL AN ENSIGN"
The problem is something 'bout your clothes, she said to me
The red shirt and the stripeless sleeves yell, "I'm Security!"
And when you get down planet-side with Kirk, you'll get to see
There must be fifty ways to kill an ensign
He takes a landing party down to find what's going on
A couple of the bridge crew, and some extras come along
And then before you know it - the `expendables' are gone
There must be fifty ways to kill an ensign
Fifty ways to kill an ensign
Just step on a rock, Jock
Get thorns from some plants, Lance
A Horta can spray, Ray
Just listen to me
Clouds drink up your blood, Bud
Computers can kill, Bill
You could lose all your salt, Walt
Kirk gets away free...
She said it grieves me so to see you with such nerves
Not ev'ryone who goes with Kirk will suffer from this curse
But then of course, you must recall - they sometimes suffer worse
There must be fifty ways to kill an ensign
Just tell him, "I'm not stupid and I'm not expendable
I'm not going!" Tell him that he's a Denebian slime devil
And he's overbearing, swaggering, and dictatorial
He'll find a new way to kill an ensign
Fifty-one ways to kill an ensign
Love it! Love it love it love it - and quite appropriate today, on Shatner's 80th birthday.
Glad you're still with us, Zuul! Love the "red shirt" piece! Thanks for sharing!
An update: I've asked another Mello member who'd expressed an interest in the game last summer if he (or she?) would be interested in either playing Dr. Brownlock, or creating another doctor, nurse or medtech character. No reply yet.
If there are any Mello lurkers who've been following the game and are interested, or if you know someone who might be interested, please let me know.
Possibly, good fellow.
I will be without 'net this weekend. I'll be home Sunday late afternoon, but likely won't read or post until sometime on Monday. Do Collins proud! :)
Waiting for the cutters to get through...
waiting to be told where to cut
Good thing we're getting union wages. :D
Wait, what do you mean there's no money? :smack:
As I just told one of our players in a PM, I don't like to post twice in a row, so that you as players have a chance to do what you want without too much GM nudging. But I'll nudge if I must.
Still no definite word from any of the three prospects for Dr. Brownlock (or another medico). For now I'll keep running Brownlock as a nonplayer character.
I love this - ST pixel art. See how many you recognize (there's a key at the bottom): http://johnmartz.com/trexels
I'm not even going to try - altho the tribbles and the horta were pretty easy. ;)
Since I still have no good candidate to take over Dr. Brownlock permanently, WES has kindly offered to do so on a temporary basis. (As it happens, she played a doctor in a ST:VGR-era writing club of which we were both members awhile back). Her Mellophant character, Ens. Hayes, is still in surgery back aboard the Yorktown and doesn't have much to do otherwise, so I'm glad to have her take over Dr. Brownlock's character at this time. We'll see if this becomes a permanent assignment. Thanks, WES!
Greetings, Shipmates!
I'll do my best with Dr. Brownlock for now. Promise to brush up on TOS medical stuff. My favorite TOS character is Bones. And I have a medical background in real life, so....
Not exactly typecast as Uhura....
I'd never heard of the movie Truck Turner (no surprise, I suppose, me being a white boy and all). But I found these clips interesting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9Pmgp_0HT4
I had no idea that Nichelle Nichols ever played such a character. Pretty cool. And see the dialogue cleverly reused here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Max8U...eature=related
Wow! She could've gotten through Starfleet Academy in two years with that kind of attitude. Sheeeeit....
just to clarify - do you "act" for the redshirts or do I?
You act only for your own character - what she says and does (or tries to do, if that action is complicated, depends on her skills, or depends on the actions of another character). You do not "control" any character other than your own. Collins commands the Security detail, subject to the authority of Delaney, who commands the entire boarding party.
If I'm the ranking officer, why are they not under my command?Quote:
Originally posted by you, as GM, in the game thread
"Among them" is the key phrase. Collins is still under the command of Delaney, whom the Captain appointed to command the entire landing party.
And I should've written Collins, and not Hayes, in post 308 above. Now corrected.
Thank you for clarifying
Just as well Collins is unconscious - I'll be away until Sunday evening
Have a good time! Check in over the weekend if you can. If not, no biggie.
Reminder, I'll be gone next week and won't be back until Saturday the 23rd. Please just assume Delaney is frustrated and just wants to make forward progress.
Let's just take a hiatus until April 24. I could use a break. Thanks, everybody!
Oops, yes, will do. Sorry.

Love the cat pic, anyrose! Definitely Starfleet material. <G> Big fan of kitties, anyway. Have two of them myself. They'd never make it through the Academy, though. :)
Yes, any end that doesn't have a big heavy door racing towards you.
I don't think that was necessary. *I* may know what's been going on the last several posts, but Collins does not. All someone had to do was say "So-and-so responds to Collins and brings her up to speed" Sedation? Really? ;)Quote:

My intent was that a mild sedative would keep Collins calm and still. Wasn't thinking "knocked out". Sorry if my post was misinterpreted. Planned to post again with Brownlock finding out form Delaney what was going on so the doc could fill Collins in. Remember, Brownlock wouldn't know what's happening with the rest of the boarding party either. Also, it's not easy playing a character you didn't create. To be honest, I'm not a big Brownlock fan. He seems (from earlier posts, etc) to be a "Nervous Nellie" type -- which I'm trying to portray. Once again, my apologies for any confusion. :)
I was going for Doctor Who

Not too many. Dr. Brownlock didn't have to operate right on the spot, after all.

I am still longing to see Shatner and Adam West do something creative (read: funny) together.
That would be great. But so much ham together in one place? Must be Easter again....
Sorry for the long absence. My current tasking at work kept me away from computers with internet access this week until now, and evenings are too short to spend time on the computer. Catching up now.
Excellent - always better having you here, Pleonast!
Welcome back, Pleonast! Just wanted to let you all know how much having this online Trek group means to me. Dealing with diabetes complications right now. It's been very hard. I so look forward to reading your posts and sending my own. Gives me something fun to enjoy. It's a great escape from the harsh realities of my life at the moment, so thanks to everyone! :)

Warmly seconded. If imagining life aboard a starship brings you some fun and a bit of diversion from life's troubles, we're glad to help!
That's cool that it helps WES.
I hope the Docs figure out whatever it takes to smooth out the complications. Where's McCoy with a magic pill when you need him.
Thanks! My favorite TOS movie moment is when Dr. McCoy is in one of our "modern" hospitals and he's so disgusted with how barbaric it is! <g>
WES - I'd like to make a suggestion - Could you separate your characters by paragraph, please?
That's a good suggestion. I've done so for your two previous posts, if that's all right with you, WES.
Thanks so much for the suggestion, anyrose. Good idea. Will try to comply. To be honest, I thought I was doing that, but I guess my sentences must "bunch" together when I post them? Not sure. Still trying to figure out all this computer, internet, tech stuff. :) Please keep the ideas and suggestions coming everyone. I need all the help I can get! <g> And they are always welcome with my thanks.
Would you, GM & Mod Extraordinaire, please edit my post so that Collins doesn't come off as a doofus?
OK, will do. But if, in the future, you (or your character) doesn't know something, just ask another character or query the Library Computer. I'd prefer that to rewriting your posts. No biggy.
I'm going to be traveling over the Independence Day weekend and beyond, so let's take a week off. I'll next post in the game thread on Fri. July 8. Best wishes to you all.
Sounds good to me. Have a good holiday, everyone.
You are, of course, more than welcome to post in the game thread for now, but I won't respond there until Friday.

Wow, I hadn't realized it's been that long.
Happy Anniversary, everyone. ;)
Time really does fly when you're having fun! :) Here's to another year -- and more -- of fun!
Happy 1st year
Man, and I missed our one year anniversary because of moving. :( It's been a great year, though. Thank you so much for running this for us.
Glad to! I've had a blast, too. We're getting near the end of this mission - really! - and then I'll be asking for more feedback.
I gotta ask - how much "game time" has actually elapsed? A week? 10 days?
eta - we're worse than old soap opera plots
About three weeks, as I figure it. But there's some wiggle room.
If this were a soap opera, any kids born to Yorktown crewmembers since you came aboard would now be ready to begin their studies at Starfleet Academy!
Sorry for the double posting. The forum would not post the original -- supposedly an error of some kind. Was told to resubmit in "2 seconds" (which I did). Don't know how to delete the repeat. Sorry again.
OK -- egg on WES's face! <G> After posting last message here -- I notice "Edit Post" on the screen. So with trembling fingers and absolute fear of technology, I click then hit delete message. :) Thanks again to all of you for your patience and understanding as I navigate my way (stumbling and sputtering) through the 21st tech century!

how are we "almost out" of this one when you've eliminated the only lead we had to solving the mystery?
Who says that was the only lead?
Just checking in to note that if you'd like another player, or if a position opens up, I'd love to be considered. I haven't been reading the thread lately, or I'd have posted months ago when there was was actually an opening. Thanks!
Sure thing. Thanks!
Hayes talks to Brownlock? WES - talking to yourself again :dubious: ?
Speaking of which....
WES has decided she'd rather not keep playing Dr. Brownlock. She's developed a new doctor character whom you'll all meet in our next mission. She'll also play Ens. Hayes, as needed, esp. when Hayes's xenosociological skills would come in handy. Dr. Brownlock will, I expect, be transferred off the ship.
Appleciders, you may develop and play a new character. Please read the game thread up to now to familiarize yourself with what we've done so far. I'll ask our other players to suggest possible shipboard roles for this new character - what kind of young officer would be useful and/or interesting to have along from here on out? Please post your thoughts here within the next 72 hours, and then Appleciders and I will discuss it further.
P.S. If there are any Mello lurkers who'd like to weigh in, I'd be glad to hear from you, too.
Wonderful! I'm quite excited. Off to catch up in detail!
A very warm welcome to Appleciders! I was just looking over our cast of characters. Hard to find something that hasn't been covered. My thought would be to let Appleciders decide what type of character to play, then see how it might fit in with the rest of our crew. Perhaps a cartographer or astronomer? Something to do with star systems and planets?
I think I'm going to have to go on a hiatus. I just don't have reliable internet access at work any more (I work with computers on a dedicated network). I can check in briefly only about once or twice a week. And it's hard to think up something more than minimal to post in the available time.
If such low participation is enough for the moderator and other players, I can continue, otherwise it's better to withdraw. Fujishiro will probably work better as an NPC, but I've written up enough about her that another player could take over.
As I look at the crew manifest, I agree that the crew seems pretty full; there's a PC in every department, and I don't want to steal anyone's thunder. The one possible place I can see to fit in another Star Fleet officer is in Science; there's no one currently filling a biology or xenobiology position; Medical is kind of handling that, but I could bounce between the two departments. I'd be happy to play a non-commissioned specialist; someone who's of comparable importance in the Federation but not a member of Star Fleet. The thing I'm having trouble with is coming up with a non-Star Fleet person who'd be on recurring missions. A diplomat might be on an intentional First Contact mission, or on a diplomatic embassy to Klingons or Romulans, but wouldn't be on a simple exploration mission. A cartographer wouldn't be on a diplomatic mission.
I have a couple of questions about setting: first, I'm a devotee of TNG but I haven't watched much TOS, so I really only know Kirk and company through the TOS movies. How big is the Federation at this time? Is Starfleet still dominated by humans? What series regular alien races have been contacted? Is the Federation at war or peace or uneasy ceasefire with the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, or other races? Second, is the tone Gene Roddenberry-style idealistic, or a little darker and grittier like DS9?
Pleonast, please stay involved! I'd rather you play less often when you can, than that you withdrawn entirely.
Appleciders, please read the very first post of this thread (with info on the ship, the crew and the rules; I just edited and updated it), and then read the first post of the game thread. That will answer some of your questions. (Of course I'd still like you to read the entire game thread). A biologist or xenobiologist character could be cool; in fact, in the very next mission there will be need of one. Your character will be a Starfleet (please note the spelling, BTW) ensign, not a noncom or a civilian. Since our PCs are, by order of the Captain, the nucleus of most USS Yorktown landing and boarding parties, your character will be going on missions even if there's not necessarily an immediate need for his or her area of specialization.
If you haven't watched much ST:TOS up to now, I encourage you to check out some episodes (I don't own them myself, but can get the DVDs through my local library). My personal favorites, some of which have influenced my running of this game, include "Journey to Babel," "The Trouble with Tribbles," "The City on the Edge of Forever," "Amok Time," "Court Martial," "This Side of Paradise," "Mudd's Women," "The Conscience of the King," "Shore Leave," "Space Seed," "The Devil in the Dark," "Mirror, Mirror," "The Doomsday Machine," "Patterns of Force," "The Ultimate Computer," "Bread and Circuses," "Errand of Mercy," "The Deadly Years," "The Enterprise Incident," "The Tholian Web" and "All Our Yesterdays." If you want me to just recommend three or four, I suppose I could open up a vein and do that!
I have my own opinion as to the tone of the game so far, of course, but for now I'll let others address that.
I think we're halfway between Roddenberry-land and DS9-ville
eta Another good episode is "A Piece Of The Action". But don't watch "Lights Of Zatar"
OK. So I'll tentatively plan to create a character in the Science or Medical departments who specializes in Xenobiology. I know that Starfleet is primarily human at this juncture, but there are only three listed non-humans so far (all of them in Engineering, funnily enough) so I'd like to play a non-human. After some browsing, I think that I'd like to play a Tellarite, an Andorian, or a Coridanite. Tellarites and Andorians are both founding members of the Federation, so they should definitely be available, but Coridanites only successfully joined the Federation in 2268, one year before the events in the game thread. I like the idea that my character as a Coridanite would be one of, if not the first Coridanite in Starfleet. I realize that a single year is not enough for a cadet to complete training at the Academy, so I'd have to assume a reason for acceptance as a non-Federation member. According to Memory Alpha, that can happen if a Starfleet officer recommends an individual, but it references DS9, so I don't know for sure if the policy dates back as far as 2269. Basically, I'd love to play a Coridanite, but if the chain of logic allowing that is too strained, I won't be too disappointed.
I'm midway through the game thread, and I'll try to finish up soon, but my "weekend" starts Monday, so I may not be done for a little while. The entire Star Trek canon is available on Netflix right now, so I'm browsing through TOS episodes.
Hang in there, Pleonast! You're a member of our crew and it wouldn't be the same without you. :)
Appleciders, I'm a TOS newbie myself. I know a lot about TNG and DS9. It really helped me when I joined this wonderful group to watch all of the TOS episodes. I also talked to friends and family who were big TOS fans and knew much more than I did. Looking forward to your participation with us!
Likewise!
Appleciders, looks like you've made a good start! I've sent you a PM.
I thought we weren't supposed to restate plot points or conversations - If the Commander asks, the Ensign will oblige. Other than that, what should I be typing here? Vargas has been kept up to speed every step of the way.Quote:

Some thoughts: Collins hasn't spoken to any of the three other Security officers who were in and out of the Brig on the night in question. She hasn't searched or scanned the Brig. She hasn't reviewed internal surveillance records. Her conversation over drinks with Hayes on how to deal with the Eruunlac didn't lead anywhere. I'm sure you can think of other things to do.
