Yes, but it goes beyond that. This is a role that is reinforced by biology - while men can lactate, it is not as widespread as it is in women (at least, I think that is the case).
If a traditional role involves doing something, say cooking, then that is one thing. If the gender role involves producing something from your body, well, that is a little more culturally ingrained.
Certainly, while I would be happy to breastfeed my child if that were desirable and possible, I would not be widely advertising the fact. I wouldn't be closeted, but I wouldn't tell everyone.
