Give me a fucking break already, universe.
My mom is in a hospital 3 hours away recovering from brain surgery. Tonight I got a call from their neighbor - a huge pine tree fell on their house during the storm. Damage is bad. The upstairs bedroom is totaled. Got tarps down on the floor and cleared out debris, but can't do anything more until power company comes out to fix the line and the tree is removed.
The hole in the roof is about 8 feet across by 6 feet. The tree is still in the bedroom. My mom was supposed to come home this weekend, but will still have 4-6 weeks of recovery. We'll have to find somewhere else for mom and dad to live until it's repaired.
Good news is nobody was home, and all the pets are ok.
Also, it's supposed to start raining again on Sunday.
Fuck.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
Man that's a long run of bad luck. You redefine 'nothings ever easy' yah know.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
My god you're certainly getting a rough time at the moment, hope your luck takes a change for the better very, very soon.
We're all with you.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
The saying "It never rains but it pours." springs to mind, and is it "Sod's Law" that says if something can go wrong, it will??
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
That is really bad, glad no people or pets were harmed though. Any possiblility of rearranging the house so she can go back? Or do they have insurance which would cover a hotel?
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
That is awful, Jet Girl. I'm sorry you have to deal with all this.
(On preview, I see Springtime's mentioned looking into insurance covering a hotel.)
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
That's God punishing you for using one of those briefcases on wheels.
Seriously, though, that all sucks, and I hope things start to get better soon.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
"This is not what I meant when I said I wanted a treehouse!" she yelled to the sky while shaking a fist.
Seriously, that sucks and I hope the insurance company pays out enough that everyone gets new cars and flat screen TVs.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
Thanks, everyone.
They will have to get a hotel or apartment until the house is livable again. There's water damage in their bedroom so it's not livable. Still waiting for the power company to deal with the downed line, then the tree removal guys can come in and tarp everything up.
On the plus side, the doctor said mom may be able to come home tomorrow.
She always wanted a skylight, just not like this :p

Remember to tell them that the original van gogh was a total loss.

I got some pictures yesterday.
Here's the outside.
Outside again.
Inside the 2nd story bedroom.
Inside again.
In addition to the giant hole, there are several branches that just pierced right through the ceiling and walls:

Water damage in the room below.
This happened Thursday night. It's Saturday morning and the tree is still on the house. The power people FINALLY came late yesterday and got the line cut. We will have to get an electrician out before we can get the power reconnected. The tree people should be here today, along with some people from a company called Disaster Recovery that are supposed to help out with the inside.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
That's some ugly damage. I'm sorry for the way that things are piling up on you.
On the other hand, it's great to hear your mom is recovering well from her surgery.
Re: Give me a fucking break already, universe.
They've got a similar tree in front of where I live. It's overgrown with ivy. I think it has a fungus. It's always been leaning a bit. Technically it's theirs, not mine. They know it's there, right in front of their house too, and realistically, there doesn't seem to be much reason for concern so far. But I'm a certified overworrier, dammit. I've always wondered what if...
Yowsah. Thanks for the images... I know, when I'm going to bed tonight, I will be repeating "Old European houses are much sturdier built. Old European houses are much sturdier built. Old European houses are much sturdier built..."

Ooh, and watch out for squirrels, they're jewelry thieves. Curiously, they seem to be particularly attracted to the more valuable pieces. Does your insurance agent know this? (well, worth a try, isn't it)
